    I think an option for the dress, if you think you would like the look of it, is knit two equal length I-cords, attach one to each sleeve at the back, and then you can tie them together in a bow at the back. It would keep your sleeves from falling and I think would look beautiful and romantic! 😊
    Also, do not sell yourself short! You are definitely not a beginner knitter anymore! You are modifying patterns to suit your needs, you are attacking (and accomplishing) advanced techniques. You have come such a long way in this year of knitting, and you’re a huge inspiration!

      I definitely think that it is worth a shot! Thank you!! And thank you so much!! There is no real way to gauge your level as a knitter, so I never quite know where I stand. Thank you 🥰

    I hope you have enjoyed knitting this dress as much as we all have listening to the stories, right up to the elastic/safety pin episode. You look so elegant in it. What a fabulous achievement and a fitting ending to your 2023 knitting journey X

      Thank you so much! This was actually one of my favorite things to knit ever. In fact, that might be why the finished object is a little lackluster for me. I had so much fun knitting it that I am sad it’s over!!

    This is such a stunning dress. Absolutely phenomenal work. As for the "maternity" silhouette, if you look up Regency era dresses, your dress has that same silhouette in the body. It's definitely a more historical silhouette that isn't seen as often today, but it's stunning.
    Also, a picot edge and picot bind off are actually two different things in knitting. The picot edge is what you did on this dress. For a picot bind off, you create stitches while binding off to create your picot points. The bind off doesn't have the double knit fabric. It does take forever though. 😂

    • @akaNoraKnits
      @akaNoraKnits  9 місяців тому

      Great idea about the band on the back! Thank you-and I do feel like the dress has a sort of regency “Bridgerton” vibe to it. I don’t mind it one bit! Thank you for letting me know about the picot differences! I had no idea!!

    You look like a Christmas tree topper (in a good way) in that stunning red dress. Congratulations and thank you for taking us on the journey. I love your honesty about the different aspects of the project. Every knit has parts that could have been different if we'd known ahead of time, but that is where all the learning happens. Cheers to a perfect end to your big year of knitting. There is a difference between a picot edging and a picot bind off. The edging, as in your dress, is the far more challenging task and yours looks perfect.

    Hey! If you add a lifeline BEFORE you start the hem, when you turn it inside to do the three needle bind off, you wont need an additional needle or pick up stitches. The life line will be a line through the row you are to pick up

    My favorite tools for feeding elastic are the Clover Flex n glide bodkins. I can’t find them on Amazon, but there are a few places elsewhere online that carry them, they are a pair of thin long flexible needles with teeth in the eye to grip the elastic as you feed it through - I’ve even used them for tiny baby clothing.

    Yay I'm so happy my tips got to you on time and that you finished the dress!! I took mine off storage and I did add some thin sheering elastic at the under bust to give me some more definition but as you feel like it should have done the bust even longer. I had an idea of adding a pico edge at top to add more coverage but I don't know how that would work!

      @akaNoraKnits  9 місяців тому

      Seriously, you have been so helpful! Thank you! I was thinking the same thing with a picot edge on the bodice! Maybe after that, a little elastic could help out my waist situation? It definitely needs to be played with a little bit. But overall, I am happy with it!

    The dress looks great. Such an achievement! Could you knit on a frill around the neckline to cover up a little if you feel you need to…maybe just using one of the yarns only for a finer look?

    I completely agree with the armpit elastic situation being uncomfortable. I also hate fussy clothes. To make this dress less fussy and potentially allow for removal of the armpit elastic, you could add a horizontal band across the back below your neck. Attaching the two sleeves across the back will keep them from wanting to fall off your shoulders and it will provide support similar to the elastic. However, it will change the silhouette of the back of the dress. It wouldn't be that same super open back, but you might be able to get more comfortable wear out of a dress you worked so hard on.

    Your dress is beautiful! If you're up to it, I'd encourage you to get the bodice right before Valentine's Day. It's too great a dress to not feel absolutely comfortable wearing with minimal fussing! Also, congratulations on your Knitstagrammy win!!

    Your knitting talent is amazing! You have grown your skills so quickly! Good on you!
    A bit of advice on your Christmas dress; if you had added some short rows in the front of the bodice it would make the empire line hit in a more flattering place. There is more vertical distance over the front bust than the back. Adding some short rows at about the halfway point would allow the empire seam to drop down a bit. Just a hint from an apparel patternmaker 🤗

    Yay for you for making a dress that fits you after you modified the pattern. That is not easy. Lows my mind just thinking about it. The original dress looks to me like it was designed for far chested women and the sleeves were not meant for coverage. But you pulled off a miracle and I hope you end up wearing it more than you think.

    Congrats on completing your Christmas dress and thank you for sharing the journey with us!! 🎉🎉🎉
    However, I was wondering whether to address some of the challenges you related about the bodice and sleeves, would you consider possibly adding picot edging around the entire neckline to increase the coverage and add some reinforcement?
    Also, at the bottom of the bodice, what do you think about adding some elastic to better accentuate the smallest part of your torso?
    Anyway, just some thoughts as I was watching.
    Happy New Year when it comes!

      I so appreciate your ideas!! I actually think that could be a great solution for my issues with the bodice! A picot edge would give me a little more coverage and therefore I could pull it down to where I wish the waistline would hit.
      As for the elastic in the under bust-I thought about this too. But I actually think it would further define the potential maternity look of the dress by really cinching it in there. I think the fit could be saved by just adding that extra length in the bodice and then a little pin to an undergarment at the waist line or something!! Great ideas! Thank you!!

    Your dress is beautiful! I hope you can crack the comfort factor. How about a wide-ish double knit band, effectively giving that greater contact with the bodice that you’re looking for? Sort of a shoulder strap that is sewn to the sleeve tops along one of its long sides and to the bodice back and front on its short sides. Hard to explain 🙈

    This is so impressive. In terms of the fit issue with the bodice not sitting right enough, I wonder if weaving some elastic thread in at the top or the transition to the skirt would help a little with sinching it in and adding some structure.

    The dress looks amazing, and any knitter making this should be proud, but for a new knitter you have done a fantastic job, on all of the things you have made this year. I understand how you feel about the bodice, but I think you could knit some kind of a lace panel for the bodice to the top allowing you to bring in that more flattering shape you wanted, and add enough structure to the edges of the panel to attach to the sleeves that. Still the dress looks amazing. Happy New Year!

    Nora what an amazing achievement! I think your dress looks great on you! I totally understand what you mean regarding the fitting issues plus you need to be comfortable in it. I think it would definitely be worth removing the sleeves & resewing them towards the centre of the bodice so it doesn’t slip off your shoulders. Could you also maybe run some wider elastic inside around the empire line to take some of weight of the skirt & cinch it in a little? Looking forward to your videos & new knits for 2024. Happy New Year from across the pond 🇬🇧

    Run an i-cord from back shoulders and tie a cute bow in back to hold those sleeves up. Or, criss-cross the i-cord across the back. It would be way cute!

      Also @@akaNoraKnits you might consider putting 1 or 2 small icord sewn/ looped through 1 or 2 rows of honeycomb cables under the bust. Steven West did that through cables on his Twist and Turns shawl. You could totally do that to pull it in gently under the bust without knitting that stockinette piece larger.

    It's so beautiful!! What an amazing finish to the year. This might be a weird question, but how many hours did you knit per day on average? I feel like you knit this dress so fast!! I'm a super slow knitter and I'm always amazed at how quickly other people seem to knit!

    • @akaNoraKnits
      @akaNoraKnits  9 місяців тому

      Thank you so much! Such a great question! I’m definitely not the fastest knitter and do just try to squeeze in as much knitting time as possible. If I had to guess, I would say that I had some days when I didn’t knit on the dress at all, and others I may have spent up to ten hours knitting on it. On average, it’s probably about 4 hours of knitting a day! I hope that’s helpful!!

    i really like picking up stitches when the patterns say "pick up 2 for every 3" or like on a sock you just pick up every edge stitch on the heel flap. but when it's "pick up 40 stitches" i die
