Shannon from www.house-improvements.com/ shows you the way he finishes drywall "butt" joints. Those are the joints in the drywall that are not beveled, they are two straight edges beside each other. Video © 2014 SKS Media.

Thank you for not including a COMPLETE HISTORY of drywall taping like some other videos and thank you for not over explaining each and every tool. You jump right into it, and that's what viewers really want to see. Big thumbs up!! Thanks!!
Agree with RAN MAN and (with his permission) adding to the list:
"Thank you for not playing loud and/or annoying music."
It would be fine to go into the complete history afterward. Hell it might be kinda chill if you were to channel Bob Ross and ramble about it while you finished more joints.
That being said, everyone hates loud, distracting music during a tutorial and example video.
Agree on the NOT playing loud music!
You demonstrated a perfect way to get a butt joint done without any extra work. Been in the carpentry business for over 5 decades and your video is welcome to the Smart and not so Smart of doing things right. Thank you, Joe
I love this channel so much because this guy doesn’t try to be cool. He’s just a nice teacher.
you mean like that Jeff guy?
Just kidding :D...maybe
@@Matt90541 I think I do know one’s name but I won’t say it. He’s very smug. I don’t think I mean Jeff. I can’t think of who Jeff is lol.
As a professional painting contractor, I can appreciate this video because I have encountered this type of finish work where the joints are not beveled and it is necessary to try and hide the taped area without leaving a hump on the wall. Very good job of explaining this technique, Shannon.
Your videos turned a heavy duty mechanic (myself) into a reno addict. I bought my 1st home this yr and ive done everything from opening up load bearing walls, replacing small windows with large windows, drywall, wiring, framing. When in doubt i tune in and sure as crap every time i need to know sonething u got a vid to help me along the way. Thanks a bunch and keep it up
Well done Shannon. Your videos are clear and, verbally, you explain the processes in an understandable and concise fashion. Thank you., I wish you every success.
Shannon, thank you for all the help from framing, to roofing, and now mudding and taping. For me, you are like the Mr. Rogers of DIY. I learn, enjoy, and feel good about myself when I complete a project. Now, off to hang the drywall.
Thanks Shannon. I did some of this in the fall and had great difficulty getting the wall smoothed. You make it look so easy but it's actually quite a skill. Thanks for the tips. That bevelled putty knife is an excellent idea. I will get one of those for my next project - basement.
I love this guy! I only wish I had one just like him at home, lol. These tutorials have helped me to proficiently choose materials AND do a great DIY job.
Thank you for this. I am replacing some drywall in my bathroom, and I have never done drywall before. I am stressing out about making it smooth. This was very helpful.
This is outstanding. Your tone, your systematic, step- by-step presentation, and your clarity make it look actually doable. Thank you for presenting the results of your years of experience in such a pleasant way. I particularly appreciate your not having a "Dancing with the Starts" lead in, or cacophonous musics wasting time or distracting from your video.
This video, along with your others is excellent! You explain things in a clear and understandable manner. You demonstrate how to do professional job. You obviously take pride in your work, and you should. Thanks for taking the time to make this video. It gave me the information and confidence to attempt taping and mudding the sheetrock in my garage.
That was excellent, you made it very easy to understand, you're a natural teacher.....THANK YOU.
Wow, thank you!
Shanon is one of the best teachers in UA-cam. Calm, matter of fact, easy to understand and follow.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Hopefully UA-cam pays you nicely for the help you're providing.
Your videos on drywall (mud, taping, corners, tools, etc.) are excellent. Totally gave me the confidence and know-how to remove my kitchen soffits and patch (match existing) the ceiling and walls. Could not be happier with results. Thanks for taking the time and informing all of us DIY'ers.
Been going thru all the drywall spackle vids on the tube that I could/can find and this is absolutely one of the best. And again, the humps revealed by the sun situation can be mitigated using a flash light from the side as Shannon has learned us in one of his other vids. Thanks Shannon, the video was really appreciated.
I do a lot of rehabs. and am always watching these videos. You have done a great job explaining without over complicating. easy to follow and fairly thorough. thank you

Excellent. I've never done much taping, and noticed from your video that I was way off base on how to tape butt joints. First, I was using "hot" mud, and had it way too thick. And I was trying to do the job in 1-2 steps. As you can imagine, I always ended up having to do a lot of sanding because the mud gets difficult to work with as the seconds go by, and more than once ended up exposing the tape again, which creates a whole new set of problems. One of the great things about videos like yours is that people like myself can watch and learn. Greatly appreciated.
Butt joints need to be taped as flat as possible. Using a TapeBuddy tool keeps the tape tight and makes this joint easy to work with.
You make this look so easy! I like that you showed it step by step and mentioned to that it needs to dry between coats. I am again ready to do my wall/joint repairs. Thanks
I've done tape and float work in my house and now know what went wrong. Thank you Shannon for clearly explaining the steps. ...
That was very informative. You explained this better than other videos I've seen. Thank you!
You are welcome
yes you explained this really well. Good job mate! Only thing is, do you prefer pre mixed plaster? I think its weak! and takes all day to dry! But is kind of convenient at the same time.
Tell me what you think of my drywall repair channel. Your channel is awesome!
Consistently great. Most underrated How-to channel on youtube. That was the quickest and most simple butt joint I've seen demonstrated yet. The curved trowel is awesome. Thanks Shannon!
Until this video I had no idea there was a curved trowel!
It really is beautiful to see skilled tradesmen ply their craft. That first swipe with the curved trowel at about 5:00 is delightful to watch.
Great video. I'm about to start my first DIY drywall attempt. I have a lot of confidence now that I've watched your video. Thanks so much for showing the basics in a simple to understand way. It's nice to watch true expertise rather than some commercial company crap that only promotes their products.
Again thank you!
Hi Shannon,
You're my "go to man" when it comes to videos showing how to finish a basement. I've watched several videos about each stage of finishing and you are always the first and last video I watch before actually doing the job. Thank you so much for putting these videos together for rookies like me. Keep up the good work!
Thanks Shannon, I've been around a little while and done a few houses and log houses. You have done an excellent job on your videos and instructions. I appreciate the time and effort you have put into these. Thank you very much. I look forward to seeing more. Lamar
Thanks for your very detailed explanation.
Thanks again Shannon, for all of your detailed videos. I installed a french door and windows with the other tutorials you made. Time to get to work on the interior ! Got the sheetrock up and screwed, just needed a good refresher on taping.
As a retired teacher, I have to agree with previous comments. Shannon, you do a great job of explaining what you are doing and why. I've had to do some drywall projects. I wish I had seen this video years ago. I now feel able to finish the project I'm currently working on with a lot less stress, mess and confusion. Thank you. I will definitely check out other HouseImprovements videos.
Thank you so much!
You're style of teaching is great. You're clear, concise, and you take your time. Another excellent video! Nice job.

You make it look so easy, I am going to try it and see if I can do it
@@jimholley9906 you should ,it looks like he just learned too.
@@jimholley9906 how’d you do?
@@roberth2042 Huh?
Best DIY channel I've found. You've been a ton of help on numerous projects. Thanks!
glad to help
All of your videos are explicitly clear. Your voice is clear, directionsdirections very understandable. You take your time but it’s not to slow. You’re very good at what you do. Thanks for making this channel!
As someone who has never done this before and had no idea where to even begin, I found this video very informative. I feel confident that I can do the job myself.
Well done I wish I had this information 15 years ago when I built the two bedrooms in my house that was a lot of trial and error before I got it right. thanks for the info
Love this cat's videos.. always well shot, techniques are explained thoroughly w/o a buncha needless info. Honestly, this guy's videos are some of what make the Internet a (potentially) useful space for sharing ideas. Thanks a ton..
I am a DYIer and doing small drywalling jobs around home for 25 years. From your video, I learned that wider mud on butt joint makes a smoother finish.
Absolutely makes them less noticeable for sure
Excellent job. Not too much and not too little info. Smooth, articulate delivery. No chit chat. Just what we need. Thanks.
Best how-to videos on youtube I've found!!
Hey I have the same picture👌👍
Thank you for the great video instructions Shannon. Ive never tape/mudded and going to give it a go now!
Ready to mud and tape again, finishing off my garage. Did part of it last year with your video. Now refreshing to began again. Thank for the easy to do steps of mudding. You are so smooth talking. :)
I've watched a ton of videos on this subject...wish I saw this first. Straight forward, to the point, great audio & clear instructions. Thanks so much for sharing! You've got a new fan in me!
Great video...right amount of detail and usable for all skill levels. Thanks!
Couldn’t be a more perfect demonstration. Great content!
Great video, no dramtics, no intro stuff, right down to how to do it. Best format and information I have seen in a while, thanks
Thanks for taking the time to make this. I agree with everyone else. Very clear and concise. I am actually looking forward to getting this part of the project completed.
Hi Shannon,
Thank you for the great video! You are obviously a craftsman. You make this look so easy and I know that it isn't! You are kind of like the Bob Ross of Drywall. Nice work!
The Bob Ross of Drywall. How Frigging appropriate! Got a good belly laugh out of that one!!!
I don't even need to do this, I was looking for hole in wall patch instructions, but hit play on this just to see what he's doing... I could watch this guy work all day! If I ever need to do stuff like this myself, I'd def turn to this channel, he has a great way of explaining, and showing! Very good tutorial person! Thanks and love watching ya work, your obviously a detail oriented craftsman that does things thoroughly and takes pride in your work... I wish the maintenance people (prior to the ones we currently have) at my place was this detail oriented, I wouldn't have a hole in the wall in the first place, bc it reallyyyyy wasn't fixed right, and is such a mess, I'm not even sure if I can fix it! Ugh, all I did was tap it by mistake, moving a box! Anyway, great video!
+Marsha Ward look for my How to patch a hole in drywall video on my channel.
Keko fixings how to

Thanks! I am pretty old and doing this for the first time in a small bathroom. This has given me confidence! Now I need to watch some more to determine what is hot mud. The store just gave me what they thought I would need.
I’ve been a GC 46 years. Loved hands on foundations, framing, siding, deck work, and finish carpentry. My worst nightmare is trying to finish drywall ie tape and texture. I wish I had viewed your videos before I attempted to tape my little retirement cabin. Man, what a freaking fiasco. I’m not sure it can be salvaged. I appreciate your teaching style and your sincerity in trying to tutor us diy guys. Hats off to you and the ” University of UA-cam”. 👍
Thanks for sharing!
EXCELLENT. WISH I HAD WATCHED BEFORE I DID MY GARAGE WITH A LOT OF SANDING REQUIRED.
THANK YOU
I wondered how is this guy so at one with the work he does. So humble and calm. Then I noticed he doesn't have a wedding band. No woman Sucking his life essence from him :). You are a better man than myself!
Sitting in my shed laughing my head off at 2 year old comment 👏
its because he's Canadian. They are just calm polite people.
This is my go-to video for a refresher every time I need to tape a wall. Good stuff...thanks!!
I did taping for a long time before I learned what you're teaching here. It took me a while to learn not to work it too much and then how to properly pressure the blade to feather out the mud. The taping boxes take away the need for this level of skill now.
I really have to say THANK YOU for all the videos you do, I have rewired my basement, I have dry walled the basement I even learned how to mud and tape all the joints of the dry wall all from watching your video's. I used to do this helping my stepdad from his rent houses but since he has passed away I had to google and seen all or most of your videos and relearned most of everything I forgot. So Thank you so much for everything you tapped . I can say I can finally call myself a handy guy for around the house "honey to do lists" If you ever find yourself around the Rockford, IL area look me up and I will take you around town in the helicopter we own. Thank you!!Russ Barnes
+armypilot71 Thanks Russ
Great video - thanks
A helicopter in Rockford?! 😲 i would love that regardless lol im in Joliet
Hi Russ! I’m from Rockford too!
well done, one of the best I have seen
Thank you for these video's. I followed your process for mixing mud for the various coats, taping and sanding. I'm amazed with the results I've achieved.
great to hear
For beginners, I suggest lightly damping the tape. I learned taping from an old head carpenter and he had me run the tape through water and use my fingers to 'sqeegee' off the water as it came out of the tub of water. This technique stops the problem of dry pockets in the tape. Also, you don't have to thin the mud on that coat which would be easier for a beginner. Great video, like usual.
For beginners, I would also suggest a bare bulb shining on your work from the side so you can see any imperfections during the finish. If you can't see any imperfections with a harsh side light, you won't see any when the room is lighted during normal use.
jollyandwaylo any other suggestions mates?
You can also run some mud over your tape once it is embedded and clean it off. Keeps bubbles from forming.
Thanks! This has to be the nicest guy in the world.
Hi, I'm new to remodeling & trying my hand at sheetrock work & this video was very helpful. Thank you & I'll be watching more of your videos on inside & outside corners.
Cheers for making this vid, very helpful, I'm about to try taping & mudding a load of drywall in my extension, this vid is perfect. Much appreciated
Thanks for the lesson, It help me fix my wall.
I always use a drop light while mudding and/or sanding to illuminate any ridges or valleys that aren't conspicuous with the naked eye.
Yes you should for sure
What's a drop light stranger?
I like how you show that spending a little bit of extra time making the mud clean and smooth saves way more time and mess later on when sanding!
Thanks for the video - good job
Excellent video Shannon!! Definitely the best mud and tape video out there.
thanks
This is a great way of doing the seams, I can honestly say that I have tried many different ways, and this one I did try and it is by far the best way I have seen so far. Keep sharing your work cause it is great. I have been a carpenter for 20 yrs and I am just now starting to do drywall, mudding and taping to improve my business so that I do not have to sub contract the work out, saves me time and money in the long run. Again great work... :)
Always a pleasure to see a real craftsman at work....thanks for sharing!
Jake
Its a nice finish, do you prefer using blades or a trowel? personally i learnt with blades feels like i have more control though trowel seems to get it flatter.
I prefer trowels on joints
@@HouseImprovements 4 years on... How you been?
Is it good if you chamfer the butt joint before applying mud. I mean cutting the drywall sheet edge at an angle of 45 degrees?
+Kevin Vella I have never seen that and not sure it really would help
isnt that when the drywall is not flush?
I have seen many of your videos. Not only are you a professional builder, but you are an excellent teacher! You have the common touch to teaching these many crafts!
+Michael Harris thank you
I really enjoy your videos. I'm fairly newly we'd (3 years now) and we are redoing the whole house one step at a time. I've never done this stuff before. Thank you for your help. God bless!
good luck!
nice job!!!!!! thank you so much!
Could you tell us how much dry time was necessary in between each step?
depends on the temp make sure it aint cold it will crack warm will dry fast
24 hours according to my NCCER classes.
add salt, dont use premix compound unless the top coat. can recoat in 30 mins. Check out some of my videos will teach you how
We are finishing our basement right now and this - and all your videos we've watched - have been very helpful, Shannon!
Wow, just came across this video to learn how to install insulation, dry wall and add mud and tape to the joints of my shed, and this is a lot of steps. Thank you for this tutorial.
Nice job.
Thanks.
1:49 that's what she said 😂
Always enjoy your vids...straightforward with no pretentiousness or unnecessary jabber. Thanks for the vid.
thanks for doing these videos, I find it refreshing to see how you describe in detail all the how to projects.
glad you watch
good job
Finally a demonstration video where the man looks like he knows what he’s doing! Lol
Watched your videos on how to install siding. Your videos really helped out. Looks like you are the only one who knows what they are doing on UA-cam! Thanks again.
Shanon saves the day again!!! Thanks for all the work you put into your UA-cam channel . You help so many people.
your welcome
When I go on my cross-canada journey, I'd love to buy you a drink some time
4:09 a boat?
LOL !!!
it's a Canadian thing. ;)
Thank you so much for this video! I have been struggling with joints and was afraid to try again after my first series of failures. After watching this video, I finally made 3 seams that actually turned out smooth. Thank you!!
You're so welcome!
I've seen more than a few drywall videos and yours stands out. Very good and straightforward and good explanations.
Glad it was helpful!
I'm a tape and bedder and that is the weirdest and slowest way I have ever seen someone do this.
Alexander Johnson also a reminder that Shannon isn't a taper he's a carpenter and he does all sorts of work. Not just taping day in and day out.
I do the same work and he's damn good at it.
So if that is the case direct the viewer to a view that is better. Perhaps yours?
He's teaching.
Feel free to post your own video so we may see the master at work.
Lol
Shannon is a true Craftsman amid a sea of mediocrity
Haaa ! thanks
Let me second the fact that your teaching is great and perfect for beginners like myself. I have seen a number of these videos and yours is the best. I feel that I can do it and I don't need year of experience with a trowel and knife before I get it right. Thank you!
thank you. Of all the videos I have watched on drywall finishing, I reference yours the most... well done!
Thanks Jeff
Thank you so much. We are doing the walls in our shipping container home and I needed some good drywall technics. You provided me with some great instructions. Right on time.
Well done, Shannon. I've seen drywall finished numerous times, but you explain all the details that are not really noticeable otherwise. Like the angle of the trowel, more pressure st the end of the trowel, etc. Good job. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Hi Shannon,
The information in this video is great. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with the rest of us. I just learned about is a great mistake I have been making is not letting it dry between coats. I try to rush and get it all done in one day. No wonder I have to sand so much.
I can't wait to try this again. Which will be soon because I am remolding my kitchen. I can't believe non of the other tutorials I have watched mentioned letting the mud dry between coats.
Thanks again,
Mike
Hi, I'm doing my utility room and this video is great,it has shown me exactly what I needed to know to move forward and start filling my joints, you have explained is well I have the confidence to move ahead, thankyou.
Thanks for taking the time to show us how to tape & apply joint compound to the drywall.
My goodness alive! Talking about thorough, I don't know that it could have done any better.
Your step by step teaching method made it easy enough for me to know whether I want to try this or not! Really a great training post. Thanks for taking the time.
I just want to say you are a phenomenal person, you demonstrated the ways and techniques very well.
I had to stop in the middle of the video and leave this comment... this guy is AWESOME!! So natural at what he does and how he explains things. Thank you so much for this video and for your channel.
Thanks Tyson!
This guy is good and knows what he is talking about. Very good technique, and explains things very well too. I learned a different technique and like Shannon's way better. Thanks for posting this vid.
Hey Shannon always like your videos and your presentation. Most of all you are so very casual in your delivery. Thanks and keep them coming as they are very informative in their content.
