It's amazing that we live in a time where people like you can share their wealth of knowledge with such a large audience. Your content is top tier and amazingly crafted. God bless
What's more amazing is how few people seek out this kind of knowledge and wisdom. I am 31 been doing the trades since 2013, ten years now. It amazing how few true craftsmen are left.
I'm a complete novice and remodeling my bathroom. Just started hanging the drywall on the ceiling by myself. Urghh hard as heck and had to cut my sheets in half just to handle it. But I messed up with gaps and with factor ends meeting cut ends. It is so hard! I cried half the day yesterday. But your videos give me hope that I can do this! And finish this project! I adore you! Thank you for all you do.
When you’re spiritually guided, this is how it works… Installed new vertical radiator in my bedroom 2m away from original. Never done next bit before… removed part of dry wall up to about 800mm from skirting and installed new 15mm copper pipe in the stud wall. Yesterday, I finished fitting new 12.5mm plasterboard panels after cutting to size and using screws I took out to fix them in place. Last night, I used Polyfolla to cover screw heads and some small gaps ready for applying ‘mud’ probably tomorrow. Sat down yesterday evening, put on UA-cam. 2nd video on the screen was this one! This is my guides saying: ‘watch this before you apply the mud’. Never seen such before, timing is ridiculously perfect. Cheers bud!
@@360snowsurfer I love this! My husband was a biology teacher and through the years many doctors & nurses have approached him when out and about to thank him for giving them a solid knowledge of the fundamentals supporting their aspirations into the medical field. Teachers are truly unsung heroes
I love the kiltmaster, Everyone makes oopsies, and small mistakes regardless of how long you’ve done something and the fact that you leave those clips in the video shows just how relatable and genuine you are. I Learn a lot from your videos thank you and god bless.
I have a home where walls were beat up by previous owners and my twin teenage boys. I have been able to fix it myself with these videos! Thank you so much for teaching us!!
My daughter has done a walkthrough on the house she is buying... same concerns. For nearly all my life I have avoided drywall work as being too exotic; this channel made me see it is within my abilities.
I feel a whole lot more more confident after watching how this is done. First, I learned how to prep the mud-clean water, cover your dry bucket, and which tools I need. This is not hard IF you do it right. Now it’s time for my own blooper reel, because just when you think it’s not that hard....
This guy works in bare feet! That's so badass! Great video, thank you. I was confused about when to pre-fill and when not to, and this video explained perfectly. Gaps larger than an eighth inch, cut edges (not factory edges) abutting need pre-fill, damaged corners, etc. Don't ever leave loose paper. Got it. Use number 45 drywall mud compound, aka 'hot mud'. Cheers!

First time ever hanging drywall, learning a lot from these lessons! Thank You and Thank You for your service to our Country! HOOAH! T-Rev US Army Retired
Loves your videos. I work on high end kitchen and bathroom renovations in Florida typically alone and have used a lot of your experience on drywall repair with my own experience and it has really improved my A game. Looking at this video reminds me of why I hate others hanging my board, this one isn’t to bad but my biggest thing I tell hangers is never gap my inside corners or make recessed to but joints if possible.
J Will: I typically hang from top down so that the cut is behind baseboards eliminating any possibility of that happening. I would agree that if you are patching in an area large or small then yes it could occur. Also when mudding recessed to recessed you can almost always do final finish in 2 coats vs 3 but that also depends on quality of finish performed. What works for me may not work for you and vice versa.
@@DavidSmith-tw7bw A top-down hang is key on larger areas, for sure. And of course taper to taper is much easier to finish, but a 2 coat finish is tough if it's going to be visible.
You just answered several questions I had in my mind. Thanks for your lucid understanding of the subject but even better you explained well. Thanks. Howdy from the great Republic of Texas
Where the hell were you 50 yrs ago? For anyone watching, this is great information. This video takes all the mystery out of drywall and I really appreciate your videos.
Great video! I’ve done a lot of joints as a homeowner, first I’ve ever heard about pre-filling. I would fill, and tape straight away. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks. I carried forward some framing mess and even used a different thickness in a spot due to time constraints. This clarified how to minimize the debt going forward.
Learned so much from this video. Helped me avoid many of the pitfalls of patching drywall and getting professional results. As a retired USAF vet myself...Aim High!
I just want to thank you for sharing your expertise!!! I had a problem where I now have to replace my wall with a limited income, so I have to do it myself. This video explained it perfectly and has helped me tremendously! Thank you!
Exceptional advice. Using the real life examples is much more helpful than using a flat front of a drywall board. Definitely my new go to site for drywall advice. I’m still far from perfect but getting better. Thanks for the help.
Just finished a patch job that's had some big gaps. Murphy's law - of course that's when the "how to deal with gaps"video shows up in my cue. Thankfully, I got close. But I still watched the whole video - I really enjoy watching pros work!
Great video and informative. I’ve drywalled over 40 years and always appreciated a good taper or plasterer behind us. There was one spot where a screw was close to the broken edge . I would add another about 2 inches back just to be safe . But great videos . I enjoy watching quality workmanship!
I found your show a while back and you seem like a guy a might have worked with in the past. That’s why I like your show. No BS! Just some great time tested ideas that you’ve willing to share. I appreciate it. I’m a carpenter but have never been the best finisher with mud. At least not very efficient. Looks good when I’m done but takes sooooo long. I’m definitely going to look back at past episodes to check out more tips. Thanks again!
Nice job and good information. Here is a minor little tip for those who do not know. Wet the egg beater before you begin beating the dry mix. Again thanks very helpful.
U helped me alot with ur videos. I'm a beginner who took on a job that's drywall and I'm not a drywaller. So by watching ur utube has ultimately shown me the basics on what I need to thank you.
This was JUST the video I needed! I'm repairing the walls of a 1970's house, and every joint is HORRIBLE lol. I just dug out all the mud and layers of tape from a cracked butt joint, and found one layer of tape, one layer of MESH tape, and another layer of tape over a huge gap! It looks like the prefilled it, as I had to scrape it all out, but the gap is about a half an inch, AND one side is more recessed than the other. Nasty work all around lol. I'm hoping I can get it prefilled right this time so it doesn't end up just cracking on me again in the future!
Re-using the wash water makes 90 minute mud into 30 minute mud. Comes in handy when topcoating the same day since all of your joints will be equal hardness. If you set the tape in hot mud and topcoat with topping as soon as it hardens it can save a day.
thank you thank you THANK YOU!! I have spent hours on here trying to find a good explanation about HOW prefill is done... countless vidoes skip over this very important step.
I can see my past mistakes in these videos and now know how to fix that when I help my son do his basement. Funny though...he was always too busy to help me when I did mine as he was always "going out." Anywho...thanks for your videos. You are a very good teacher.
I never finished drywall before I was just muscle in the past hanging it or unloading trucks and bringing it into a house. Im retired and have all the time in the world and I fixed a bunch of holes in my home and matched textures. I scared myself on how well I did. I wouldnt even want to do this for a living. Most anyone can do this type of work. I watched videos on utube and learned. I made a few mistakes at first on how much water to mix in the mud at what point in the process you are at. Its not hard and learn from your mistakes. God Bless and take care.
Thanks for all these instructional videos! I've changed up my methods and now incorporate prefilling with hot mud. Oh. BTW, I was wearing similar "shoes" when I dropped my orbital sander on my little toe. Still healing... Again, thank you!
Great stuff! I never knew anything about pre filling. I have a bathroom I eventually want to renovate and I can’t wait to put what I’ve learned from you to work. Thank you!
I’ve been doing Drywall work for 35+ years and that pre-filling definitely a step you can skip unless it’s a 1/2 inch or wider and then you probably need to recut a piece of Sheetrock and do it over .
Still waiting for you to do a video using the hawk and trowel, alot of areas only use pan and knife so it would be helpful to alot of guys that don't know the benefits of using a trowel, thanks again, and keep up the good work....👍
Thanks for the information. I just bought a new house and the builders used a bunch of scrap pieces to do the basement. It's an unfinished basement but they could of used better sheets. Anyways I have to fix and finish it now so thanks for the tips!
thanks for showing some of the common obstacles that I will face as I start to mud my drywall in. I was wondering how to go about working with some of the broken edge pieces. You answered all my questions. thanks again.
I bought a double wide manufactured home last year and I’ve been watching your videos trying to educate myself. I’m finally ready to get started on a room and you are my GO TO resource! Starting in a small bedroom to “test” my skills before tackling bigger areas. This one is exactly what I needed this weekend!
Thanks for such an easy-to-follow (maybe not as easy as you make it appear, though) tutorial. I'm prefilling mismatched factory edge vs cut edge DIY hung sheetrock as we speak, so this was extremely helpful!
I'm a complete novice and first time hanging sheetrock. I messed up in a few places (or many). But I mistakenly have a few sheets that meet factor edge with cut edge. How did yours turn out? Any advice?
Really good content and this guy is fun to watch. I don't tape/spackle on a daily basis, so my skills tend to atrophy and videos like this are a great refresher from time to time.
I love that camouflage kill you're wearing.... I got to find me one of those.... I live in Arizona and doing a lot of stuff around the house that's the perfect thing to wear.
Vee butt joints with a sharp utility knife. Keep a small sharpening stone or medium grit diamond stone on hand to keep the utility knife sharp. Utility blades dull pretty quick. He is so right that getting a solid base is important for the tape. Prefill gives you that solid base.
I’ve been working on replacing drywall in a kitchen where backsplash tiles had to be removed. Your video has been the most helpful, easy to understand I’ve ever seen. Thank you for your excellent help. Fred
Great job! I just finished my garage ceiling. What a pain but overcoming pain is a great life lesson and very rewarding. Thank you for sharing your knowledge
I rarely comment too much, but I must say- excellent video. You have the knack for keeping the interest with your down to earth, practical instruction. All in a nutshell- good info, confidence in the demo ( and that speaks of years of practice) and 1 shot of humor to keep things light. And the Camo Kilt- great on a hot day, yet macho enough.
What I appreciate is your love for people and your work. You are a great teacher and easy to understand! You have helped me tremendously in the short time I’ve been a subscriber! Thank you my friend and thank you for your service to our country!
Love the egg beater trick. Had to learn the hard way trying similar with adding water to powder vice powder to water. Wife thought funny. And love the cammie kilt.
Great content, I have large (1/4 +) cracks at the ceiling wall junction on the walls that are short walls on each side of an open kitchen. I think they were never prefilled. Funny thing they are only obvious in the winter months.
Do you have a swamp cooler? Surfaces often expand & contract due to cold and heat but also due to high humidity and then low humidity like we have here in Colorado from swamp coolers
Your video did help a lot. Thanks a lot. I’m a DIYer and I surprised myself that I was actually doing what you recommended. Well, everything except using the handle to flatten out the slight ridges.
Drywalled a few times, but no pro, that’s for sure. Great information. Always have trouble with uneven edges. Especially living in an old home; nothing is close to square.
Kilted Guy- great work!! Glad to learn from you, but I used to mud/tape barefooted but have you ever stepped on a drywall nail? DAMN!! I quit and put my shoes back on!! Keep up the good work!👍🏻
I’ve watched a bunch of your videos and they’re helpful! Thank You! I live in a 1950s house with textured drywall walls everywhere. As I work thru improvements, there are lots of imperfections I find - lifting drywall paper, poor patching, hole to patch. I want to redo my baseboards and trim, so while I’m doing that, what is the sensible thing to do about the drywall? A) deal with one problem at a time with patching B) tear out and redo C) just sell the house and move to a rental D) something else Appreciate your advice! Jaime (she)
I fill all runs regardless of gap. Anyone who has seen a bust line understands. Especially with new 2x4s. The contraction can cause a bust line and hotmud filling works to create no issue
Thank you for all the help. You hit every question I had about what I need to do in order to fix the problems with my armature drywall hanging job! I am going to share this with my husband, and I know he will get a kick out of the kilt, lol. And I loved the picture you shared in the beginning of the video. That was sweet.
Love your vids! Used them extensively for a DIY project I did remodeling my entire kitchen from studs out and now doing the bathroom the same way. Your videos made the job MUCH EASIER -- thanks!
Finally someone that has shown! How to do Butt joint next to a recessed edge! I always wondered how you technically, one was supposed to do that! I'm pretty decent at hanging drywall! But my finishing needs way, more practice! It's not that I couldn't learn to finish drywall! I just don't really get much practice at it!
Just pre filled 300sq ceiling yesterday, trying something new today, to tape the 4 ft edge butt seam with homemade 5 3/4 in wide 3/4 ply with about 1 3/4 degree bevel cut centered giving a pocket for tape filling. Thank you for information
Thought I knew a lot but learning and seeing something new and useful with each video - yes, I am a professional but open to other techniques and problem solving tips. Keep up the useful content!!!
I am doing cosmetic repairs on plaster and I bought a cheap mixer at GoodWill and a mixing bowl. Prior to doing this I was not mixing to the consistency I wanted but somehow this worked perfectly. I paid $5 or less for the mixer. I also started using a big plastic spoon to move the mud around. Sounds silly but they are all designed to work together and inexpensive for a non pro. I do have a hawk and trowel also.
Durabond is not for the novice. It is a special purpose mud for filling large areas. It is more of a cement...IT DOES NOT SAND. I use it for large or deep holes...sometimes with fiberglass tape then finish coat with easysand.

I wasted an hour yesterday trying to find a small whisk for grout... never thought of using an egg beater. Thank you!
Just found this channel, you're a great teacher! Former Navy vet here.(aviation). Thank you for your service and great videos
Thanks for your service also. What years were you in? I worked on an old plane that was often a Navy plane which was the A7 coursair.
Great video and informative. I’ve drywalled over 40 years and always appreciated a good taper or plasterer behind us. There was one spot where a screw was close to the broken edge . I would add another about 2 inches back just to be safe . But great videos . I enjoy watching quality workmanship!
Straight forward and also humorous
I found your show a while back and you seem like a guy a might have worked with in the past. That’s why I like your show. No BS! Just some great time tested ideas that you’ve willing to share. I appreciate it. I’m a carpenter but have never been the best finisher with mud. At least not very efficient. Looks good when I’m done but takes sooooo long. I’m definitely going to look back at past episodes to check out more tips.
Thanks again!
Thanks, I appreciate that 😎, & Thanks for subscribing!
Well my wife just lost a beater out of the kitchen. Thought never crossed my mind. Very useful. Thanks.
Genuine, kind, hard worker. Need more like this guy in the world.
Sounds like the problem I have right now. What did you prefilled with?
Re-using the wash water makes 90 minute mud into 30 minute mud. Comes in handy when topcoating the same day since all of your joints will be equal hardness. If you set the tape in hot mud and topcoat with topping as soon as it hardens it can save a day.
I really appreciate your videos it helps to have someone to show a Amateur like me what to do and how to do it thanks
thank you thank you THANK YOU!! I have spent hours on here trying to find a good explanation about HOW prefill is done... countless vidoes skip over this very important step.
I’m doing drywall in my kitchen. I’ve been watching your videos and learning as I go. It won’t be perfect I know that but I feel more confident now
My girl literally went to the stores looking for Lipton Clear Ice Tea 😆🤣🤣🤣🤣
lol 😂
Thanks!
It’s a pleasure watching a real pro share their expertise, thanks for sharing
I can see my past mistakes in these videos and now know how to fix that when I help my son do his basement. Funny though...he was always too busy to help me when I did mine as he was always "going out." Anywho...thanks for your videos. You are a very good teacher.
Thank you! I try to be as detailed as possible
I guess you’ll be too busy too lol
Ouch. My feet have learned to get out of the way of falling objects, well most of the time. I RARELY drop things on my foot anymore
Wish I watched this video before doing my kitchen. My kitchen still looks great, but I am worried about the longevity. Great video. Thank you
Thanks!
Welcome! Thanks for the super thanks!
You're a brave man to run around on a job site barefooted. I am enjoying the videos.
Lol thank you for your input
Excellent instruction, great editing and I love the lighthearted humor. Subscribed.
Thanks, I enjoyed your tips and your humor !!! Peace and God Bless America
The fact that you do drywall with no shoes on is very impressive
Well it helps if you have nerve pain from Peripheral Neurophathy that makes wearing shoes torture.
thanks for showing some of the common obstacles that I will face as I start to mud my drywall in. I was wondering how to go about working with some of the broken edge pieces. You answered all my questions. thanks again.
You always give great information. And I really appreciate your great sense of humor! I'll be on the lookout for the clear formula iced tea.
I bought a double wide manufactured home last year and I’ve been watching your videos trying to educate myself. I’m finally ready to get started on a room and you are my GO TO resource! Starting in a small bedroom to “test” my skills before tackling bigger areas. This one is exactly what I needed this weekend!
Glad to help
Thanks for such an easy-to-follow (maybe not as easy as you make it appear, though) tutorial. I'm prefilling mismatched factory edge vs cut edge DIY hung sheetrock as we speak, so this was extremely helpful!
I'm a complete novice and first time hanging sheetrock. I messed up in a few places (or many). But I mistakenly have a few sheets that meet factor edge with cut edge. How did yours turn out? Any advice?
Great advice ! I did this for 15 years and had to learn the hard way.
Glad it was helpful!
Really good content and this guy is fun to watch. I don't tape/spackle on a daily basis, so my skills tend to atrophy and videos like this are a great refresher from time to time.
Thank you. Guy
This guy's amazing....thanx for great tips....(he has a good sense of humor too...)
Glad you think so!
I love that camouflage kill you're wearing.... I got to find me one of those.... I live in Arizona and doing a lot of stuff around the house that's the perfect thing to wear.
Yeah, that or nothing
Vee butt joints with a sharp utility knife. Keep a small sharpening stone or medium grit diamond stone on hand to keep the utility knife sharp. Utility blades dull pretty quick. He is so right that getting a solid base is important for the tape. Prefill gives you that solid base.
Thank you..this is tomorrows job for me
I’ve been working on replacing drywall in a kitchen where backsplash tiles had to be removed. Your video has been the most helpful, easy to understand I’ve ever seen. Thank you for your excellent help. Fred
Thanks, glad I could help you out 😎. And thanks for subscribing!

Thanks! Didn't know I should put some mud on before tape.didnt remember anyway. Lol I helped my husband spot nails few times.
Great job! I just finished my garage ceiling. What a pain but overcoming pain is a great life lesson and very rewarding. Thank you for sharing your knowledge
I noticed you can mix mud correctly .
prefilling is really good advice.
there are less bubbles in the world thanks to you .
I c0mend you sir
I learned more about drywalling
I'm doing a big project myself thanks for the tips
I rarely comment too much, but I must say- excellent video. You have the knack for keeping the interest with your down to earth, practical instruction.
All in a nutshell- good info, confidence in the demo ( and that speaks of years of practice) and 1 shot of humor to keep things light.
And the Camo Kilt- great on a hot day, yet macho enough.
Thanks, I appreciate your comments. The camo kilt is a utility kilt
What I appreciate is your love for people and your work. You are a great teacher and easy to understand! You have helped me tremendously in the short time I’ve been a subscriber! Thank you my friend and thank you for your service to our country!
Thanks, glad I could help you out 😎. And thanks for subscribing!
Thank you! Very thorough and helpful. Now I can finish my job properly.
Your video did help a lot. Thanks a lot.
I’m a DIYer and I surprised myself that I was actually doing what you recommended. Well, everything except using the handle to flatten out the slight ridges.
I do enjoy your videos very much I am quite the novice at drywall
Thank you very much. I did my first drywall and had all these issues and needed some suggestions.
Drywalled a few times, but no pro, that’s for sure. Great information. Always have trouble with uneven edges. Especially living in an old home; nothing is close to square.
This video was a great help. thank you for posting.
Thank you for your support
Kilted Guy- great work!! Glad to learn from you, but I used to mud/tape barefooted but have you ever stepped on a drywall nail? DAMN!! I quit and put my shoes back on!! Keep up the good work!👍🏻
Yes, I’m careful to pick them up
I’ve watched a bunch of your videos and they’re helpful!
A) deal with one problem at a time with patching
B) tear out and redo
C) just sell the house and move to a rental
D) something else
Appreciate your advice!
Jaime (she)
I would just repair it all at the Same time. But you might start a little at a time.
I now have a collecton of beaters one for my paint supplies and one for drywall supplies
Thanks for the helpful tips. I am looking forward to using them on my project.
Thanks for the great video, I'm getting ready to mud and tape my whole basement and your video answered a lot of questions.
Glad to help
I fill all runs regardless of gap. Anyone who has seen a bust line understands. Especially with new 2x4s. The contraction can cause a bust line and hotmud filling works to create no issue
Thank you for all the help. You hit every question I had about what I need to do in order to fix the problems with my armature drywall hanging job! I am going to share this with my husband, and I know he will get a kick out of the kilt, lol. And I loved the picture you shared in the beginning of the video. That was sweet.
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it. Guy
Love your vids! Used them extensively for a DIY project I did remodeling my entire kitchen from studs out and now doing the bathroom the same way. Your videos made the job MUCH EASIER -- thanks!
I really enjoyed this video I'll be putting this knowledge to good use when I buy my first house!
The two videos I've watched of yours have been really helpful. Thanks for taking the time.
Thank you for your input
Www.Thatkiltedguy.Com
Yep - I need to do all of those pre-filling steps. Thanks for the great techniques.
I have an uneven joint to tape and you addressed that perfectly near the end of the video. I'm learning a lot from you. Thanks!
Thought I knew a lot but learning and seeing something new and useful with each video - yes, I am a professional but open to other techniques and problem solving tips. Keep up the useful content!!!
I learn all the time, and sometimes it's what I pass on to you guys.
