Episode 6, family. Episode 6.
Parent to parent.
I strongly from my heart recomend ya to watch Constantine tv show , u will see how epic he is ( Mat Ryan at least )
🐦
Trippy, dark? What till episode 4 & 5, those will scare the living bejesus out of you.
"That Johanna - she's kind of interesting, but she also kind of sucks at the same time" - perfect description of every Constantine ever!
I thought the exact same thing.
That is their defining character trait lol
At least she's more "posh" than John. But as long as you get the crippling survivor's guilt and the general "F-U" attitude towards all the higher powers of the universe, you've got a proper Constantine. Jenna Coleman nailed it. I've loved her in some past things, but this performance made me forget about them.
I can't stand Johanna and that smug smirk on her face. Seriously! I hate her.
@@elbruces her accent tho - she should have not even tried a working class accent and just went full posh.
3:07 the reason why it's such a high security "hospital" is because, in the comic, it's actually Arkham Asylum... You'll find out later why he's there.
Yep! In a way I kinda like that the show didn't call it as such. Makes a fun little easter egg for new fans
@@river_acheron I think the show avoids connection to other DC shows.
@@zitronentee but still have some little dc Easter eggs like captain cold on the screen in Jed’s dream and Jed’s flash action figure
When it comes to Matthew, he mentions it when he first shows up, but he really did used to be a human and then he died and was changed in The Dreaming into a raven. In the comics, he died in his sleep so that's why his soul stayed in The Dreaming and he was allowed to continue on in a new form. Personally I really like Matthew and Patton Oswalt did a great job voicing him. I'm happy you guys are watching this series. The next 3 episodes are truly great TV so I'm looking forward to your reactions
Not to say that everybody who dies in their sleep becomes a raven (that would be a *lot* of people) but the spot was open and Lucien made the offer.
Neil Gaiman has said that the reason they cast Patton Oswalt as the raven is that they knew he could fit into the costume.
@@elbruces that's hilarious and just makes me love Neil Gaiman even more, which I didn't think was possible
In the comics, Matthew was actually Matthew Cable from the Swamp Thing comic book (under Alan Moore's run)
I feel like I’m the only one who instantly loved Matthew and Patton’s voice acting.🤷🏽♀️
@@UncleMilo I thought his name was John Cable but maybe im wrong its been a while since i read Swamp Thing
Matthew wasn't always a raven. He was originally a man who died while in a coma, which counts as dying in your sleep, so he was given the choice to go to his eternal rest or become Dream's new raven and he figured what the hell and accepted. He's not a raven that for some weird reason talks and has a human name, he's the soul of a human who became a dream in the shape of a talking raven.
And his "I wasn't a very good person when I was a person" line is a callback to his origins an alcoholic, dirty investigator in Swamp Thing
In the comic book, Matthew was once Matthew Cable from the Swamp Thing comic (under Alan Moore's run)
"There's a lot of dark shit in this show so far."
Me laughing in 24/7.
Lol .. They are used to MCU .
@@seanmitchy They are also used to Game of Thrones
They are so innocent 😹
Gosh that episode messed me up. I had to take a break from binging the series because of it.
@@zveldarkus125 And the comic is even more disturbing.
Plz give Matthew a chance he's in the comic and an important character in the storyline. He's voiced by patten Oswald and is supposed to be the comic relief with how dark the content is. He was also a human who died and became dreams raven, his ravens are his companions and help him. He always has a raven
I love Matthew ❤️
Matthew is great .. its a weird hill for them to take against .
John isn’t necessarily killing all of those people on purpose. The necklace is automatically protecting him.
Same thing happened when Corinthian tried to kill Ethel to take the necklace from her.
Corinthian wasn't trying to take the necklace, he wanted her eyes because that would give him John's location. He didn't know about the necklace
@@LemonSte I’ve rewatched Sandman since leaving that comment & yeah he was trying to take her eyes
Matthew is the comic relief. He is supposed to be a little goofy, hence being played by Patton Oswalt. Plus, he can talk because he used to be human only hours before.
Matthew is also useful for exposition without Dream talking to himself or some voice-over.
He is also US. He asks and poses the questions that we the viewers or readers have. He was also the same way in the comics. I love Matthew lol
I understand matthew as the concept, but the interpretation + dialogue its just plain annoying. Insufferable, just like Jaskier in The Witcher series
@@Roger6233 I can’t agree. I enjoy him.
@@Roger6233 To each their own. I love him, and even moreso in the comics. That said, I can see WHY he is a turn-off for some fans.
Lucienne told Dream that "Dream of the Endless Always has a raven." Matthew talks the way he does because he is a recarnated man and that is how he spoke in real life. I just think of Matthew like you think of Jaskier the Bard in The Witcher. Both main characters are soooooo serious you need a little levity to keep it interesting.
both way too cute 🤣💜
Matthew is a fan favorite from the comics! And him and Dream are for sure one of my most absolute favorite relationships from the Sandman universe. Can't wait for you to get to know him better.
I think Matthew will grow on you. Keep in mind you’ll see fantastic creatures in this show as citizens of the dreaming. In episode 1 at the very beginning you see him in passing but there is a cigar chomping pumpkin headed character named Mervyn voiced by Mark Hamill. He’s kind of ridiculous, too but he’s played very seriously. He’s a foreman/custodian/builder in The Dreaming
I'd also say he's the grumpy, trash talking janitor of the dreaming. I hope he gets his cigarette in s2 cause that's iconic
God I love Merv!
He’s only voiced by Mark once then someone else on subsequent appearances
@@GreenBoxStudio1incorrect. Mark hamill voices Mervyn for both episodes and is also slated to return to voice him in season 2
The scene where Dream shows her that memory it was so heartbreaking 😪
Might as well get used to Matthew the Raven. He's one of the most popular characters in the Sandman comics.
the amulet protects its bearer, it has no remorse or mercy. Gifts from demons are ... pesky. Matthew was someone who died in their sleep and thus he was allowed to enter the dreaming and become Dream's Raven. Matthew is, as far as the story goes, US. He is learning about the Dreaming and his place in it. Part comic relief and part conscience for Dream he is one of my favorite characters. He'll play a larger part as the series continues in very unexpected ways.
Ah yes, our lady Johanna Constantine. Gotta love her and that coat. Not sure how up on your comics you are, but originally it was John Constantine, as in Hellblazer John Constantine. Matt Ryan on Legends of Tomorrow was probably the most recent incarnation of the character, but Keanu Reeves also played him in a movie from the 2000's. Fascinating character and it's always cool to see The Newcastle Incident on film. Poor, poor Astra.
Nope. I don't love her. Can't stand her, actually.
Mat Ryan was epic on his own tv show , wich idiots canceled but it was so good , ofc it lost viewers when thay changed time of show on tv ... shame , and in LoT he was horribile ( well thx to scenarist )
There was also his presence in some animated features. "Justice League: Dark" had him on there, also Matt Ryan I believe... and his own "City of Demons".
@@kereminde They brought him back for like 6 lines in Harley Quinn too. It's clear the creators know who the best Constantine actor is lol
@@madanevs Main problem then is likely whatever eldritch contract is involved.
I suppose Matthew the raven might be a bit much depending on what you’re used to but I guarantee he’s awesome. This show gets extremely dark, the comic is 100x darker, and they are some pretty goofy characters sprinkled throughout. It’s so worth it I promise!
one thing about sandman (the comic) that's different from a lot of tv shows is that the tone is all over the place, not just from issue to issue but sometimes in same issue. dark horror, poignant moments, broad comedy, twee fantasy, historical drama, basically anything that could be in a dream all mushed together. it might be a little whiplash-inducing to someone not familiar.
@@jessharvell1022 oh for sure! The show captures some of that, but they definitely reigned it in a lot for a wider audience.
@@jessharvell1022 It's a story about stories, after all (most of Gaiman's works are, at some level), so it makes sense that it'll hit most tones at one point or another, depending on what story it's telling at the time.
@@jessharvell1022 I think that was one of the things that endeared it so much to my little ADHD heart. Can't get bored of the same stuff!
Jenna Coleman and Patton Oswalt were PERFECTLY cast as Constantine and Mathew the Raven. She was such a badass sending that demon to hell (after it had clearly played Mortal Kombat 11 because it crawled out of that guy like Noob Saibot does in one of his fatalities).
And I know they couldn’t get John Constantine in the show because of tons of reasons like rights issues and possibly confusing viewers, but part of me really wishes they could’ve gotten Matt Walsh to play him again. He embodied Constantine so perfectly, and I wish he was given a chance to written by Neil Gaiman on screen for once.
Patton Oswald‘s voice is Matthew is so recognizable it takes you out in the first episode.
But I think in the next episode you’ll get more used to it.
that was my exact reaction... at first i was like...hold on i knoooooow this voice, what an odd choice. but his so relatable and cute i love him now ☺️it felt like it was me if i was dreams companion
So Matthew shows up here a lot earlier than in the comics but it’s smart because he can be used as a tool for dream to talk to for the audience (since half the dialogue in the comic is dreams brooding moody inner monologue) lol
I think you guys missed the part where Matthew was a person and when he died he became the Raven. That's why he has that personality and can talk. Maybe Jessamy was the same but we didn't see her until basically she died, she was smart enough to strike a match and set the house on fire though, so...........I'm not sure why she didn't go back to the Dreaming and call the calvary though, that part is bugging me.
I am so happy that you guys chose this series to make reactions too. The comics were quite dark. The Endless themselves, in their own ways, are a very dark "family". There is always banter about Morpheus being selfish, but the man is running the entirety of the dreamscape. Yes he is selfish, he has to be, you see what happened when he was captured. He needs his power, not only for the sake of the realm, but for the sake of humanity. If anyone needs to be focused on obtaining and maintaining their power, it's that guy.
Matthew is the best, I hope he grows on you
So glad you two are watching this show. Not sure how you manage to be so patient and spread all your shows out...way more disciplined than me :)
I binge the whole stuff like in two days 🤣
@@SteveNaranjo haha-me too. Watched it like in one session
"Fuck it let's go to hell" is not a phrase I never thought I'd find myself repeating in public but it is that good
One of my favorite parts of this series is Morpheus' beginning to see how much he was missing being so caught up in his own stuff. The visuals and characters are also so beautiful! Love this show!
Lawdy….if you thought this episode was dark you’re in for some eye openers. Pun not intended. Brace yourselves. 😳😬😬😳
Ethel say that the jewel kept her alive for 116 years but she didn’t always have jewel all her life so she is way older than 116 years old.
I liked this Constantine. This was actually one of my favorite episodes. It seems like people that she cares about end up hurt and she feels responsible, so she puts up this wall, and when people start to care she takes off, and acts selfish and like she doesn't give a damn, but its obvious she cared about her ex-girlfriend even though she acted like a jackass when she just ghosted her. I also think Ethel was honestly always trying to keep John safe, even with all the lies, and the only reason she had him locked up was because he hurt people, but I also feel bad for John, because I believe the pendant was what drove him mad. but I feel bad for him only a little, because there's just some things you can't take back no matter what has happened to you, there's always some responsibility you hold as an adult in the end. P.S: I liked Matthew, and by the way, he is voiced by Patton Oswalt.
Another great reaction! Another great episode! Jenna Coleman as Johanna Constantine did a fantastic job! You can tell she was having a lot of fun in the role.
Matthew The Raven kind of fulfilled the same role in the comics as he does in the show. Someone for dream to talk to. In comics it would have been six panels of just thought bubbles without him. Here, imagine the end of the episode without him. Just dream leaving Joanna, sprinkling some sand down and disappearing into it. Episode over. Or him monologuing to no one about ' now I must go after my helm which is being held in hell' . I think you'll get over it quickly because he'll be used well to prompt dream to answer questions for the audience that there's no real good way to do otherwise
The next three episodes are amazing
The Matthew dislike was rather disappointing.
Mathew is AMAZING why are You guys disliking him?!
Jenna Coleman as Johanna Constantine is so awesome!
Nikki's make up is making her shine even more! ❣🇧🇷 I'm excited for you, guys, to get to episodes 4 and 6!
Agreed.
In the comics when the Corinthian consumes peoples eyes he can sometimes see the future which is why he’s always there at the right time.
The voice of Matthew is Patton Oswalt who you may have seen play Remy in Ratatouille :)
Same actor who repeated “Inconceivable” in ThePrincess Bride”?
I loved The Sandman, so glad you’re watching
Matthew talks like that cause he was a human being with that accent ! He says so himself.
15:15 I know what you mean. Well, not exactly since luckily it's not an actual memories but for the last two months I irregularly keep having this nightmare that I bite my tongue in half and it's so realistic that every time I wake up I begin to frantically search for the missing half of my tongue in my bed before I realize that it was only a nightmare and my tongue is still whole. I'm even using a pacifier sometimes out of the sheer fear that one day I will actually bite into my tongue.
It's either my brain trying to process the stress I've had for the last two months dealing with work and a light depression or it's Dream of the Endless and he doesn't like me. ;)
John was actually a DC villain, Doctor Dream, and the "hospital" was Arkham Asylum in the comics. He even meets Scarecrow as he's leaving. In the comics, he's also all withered and... well, naked, until he gets a coat to wear.
posted 1 second ago 😗 i was stalking lmao, i was waiting for episode 3 reaction ❤️
"This was such a dark episode!" Oh you sweet dreaming child.
The raven isn't meant to be played as a funny gag. He's a dream of a raven. He can travel between the real world and the Dreaming. The voice is Patton Oswalt.
Seeing your reactions to this show makes me happy
I can’t wait for you guys to get to episode 5 🫣 love your reactions!!
I love you guys so much and this show is so amazing! It feels like you are torturing us on purpose by having so much time in between episodes. 😂 So excited for the next reaction. I’m sending positive vibes, thoughts, respect and much love your way.
Thank you for being phenomenal people and entertaining reactors.
Your dedicated and enthusiastic fan,
Denise
Great reaction as you two always deliver !! Can't wait to see what you think of Ep 4 !!
Fun! Luv your reactions you two. I’m so glad you are doing both this and Sandman.
Really enjoying your reactions to this show :) If you ever get the chance to check out the Sandman graphic novels, it's well worth your time. They are works of art, both visually and in terms of storytelling. When they were published few, if any creators had produced anything like them, they changed the endire graphic novel landscape. It's incredible to finally see these stories on screen.
They've done an incredible job with this show, condensing and reworking them for live action, and (imo) have managed to keep the spirit and the tone very well. It helped that the writer of the comics, Neil Gaiman was heavily involved in the series. He has in the past actively scuttled production of adaptations that didn't meet his standards. It's incredible to finally see these stories on screen.
[/rambling] Sorry, all this to say your reactions are great, hope you continue to enjoy the show.
Eyerolls are always fun from Nikki when Steven starts the show with his delivery. They changed John Constantine from the comics to Johanna due to legal reasons, but that nightmare that starts the show with her is part of his backstory from the movie and the TV show. You might want to give Constantine a watch as it's pretty entertaining with it's magic. Jenna Coleman plays Johanna Constantine and if you don't her from Doctor Who then you probably seen her from Captain America: The First Avenger as one of the dates that Bucky brought for him and Steve to the World's Fair. I think you'll enjoy the next episode and who guest stars in it.
The Club was in Newcastle in north-east England, back in the 1990's-2000's-ish.
As usual: LOVE your reactions! I can't wait to see your reactions to episode 6 (the sound of her wings, in particular.)
In the comics, John is the Justice League villain Dr Destiny, who could manipulate people through the Dreamstone (Dream's Ruby) (Dreamstone was used in Wonder Woman 1984, by Max Lord). So he's in Arkham Asylum and yes, he's very dangerous. But for complicated copy right issues, they use John's civilian name, the Dreamstone is called The Ruby and the security prison is not named. Also John Constantine is Johana and Martian ManHunter is missing entirely
I can't wait for you to react to the next episodes because those next three are my favorites
Mathew gives Dream a reason to say out loud things the audience needs to hear, but that wouldn’t make sense for Dream to walk around saying to himself. Also Mathew isn’t a raven, he is a human who died in a dream and stayed on in that form.
Jenna Coleman (who plays Johanna Constantine) is one of my favorite actresses ever. You've got to watch the British scifi series Doctor Who. Jenna Coleman plays Clara Oswald, a companion of the Doctor, from season 7 to season 9.
They made a nod to comic Rachel's condition: In the comics, she was an addict. So when we see Dream take the pouch from her, she holds on to it like an addict.
Steven your reaction to Mathew the raven really made me giggle 🤭 lol 😂
the chemistry here is on point between Dream and Constantine!
Steven willl love the next episode as a GoT fan.
If you can't remember whether Cain kills Abel or Abel kills Cain, you need to go find your old Sunday School teacher and slap them. I know y'all are from the South.
My main concern is that someone is publishing softback books full of demon-summoning rituals THAT ACTUALLY WORK. How many other copies are out there?
"How awful would it be to have a nightmare that's a memory?" Ask anyone with PTSD.
Ethel talking to the Corinthian was the first *real* evidence that the Sandman was coming, so she took it very seriously. Yeah, she'd moved with her kid and changed names in the past, but this time it was definitely happening. That's why she took the extreme measure of giving John the Amulet of Protection this time. Plus, you live long enough you're like "fuck it" about your own life, and only want to protect your child.
Constantine kinda sucks but is also very interesting, that take is correct.
I love the fact that y'all don't know anything about the cast. Next episode is going to be hella fun.
Great reaction as usual you two are simply the best.👍🤗🤗
My fave new show of the year so far ..
Mathew is a cool character .. he just talks .. He was a man before.
Mathew gets explained Next Episode.
lol Not as goofy as Thor Talking to his hammers , like lovers .
Or a Groot , Rocket , Killer Croc , Tree Beard etc
Or a hippo in moon knight
Or the whole of Harry Potter , Starwars.
Lol Its a comic book ..
If a talking Bird is goofy ,
The whole MCU and DC comics products are the same . Lol
The more I think Batman is goofy , why dress up as a bat .. Lol
Jon snow coming back to life was goofy . Lol Aria having different faces etc
I'm eagerly waiting for season 2 of Sandman
Hello Nikki & Steve React,
Johanna Constantine is a female version of the character John Constantine who is an occult detective. The character is a staple of DC comics & is the main character of the Hellblazer comic book series. The character has also appeared in the "Sandman' comic book. Jenna Coleman is actually the third actor to play the role following in the footsteps of Keanu Reeves who played the character in the 2005 movie & then Matt Ryan, who would play the character on a solo TV series that lasted a single season on NBC in 2014 & then continued in the CW Arrowverse show "Legends of Tomorow." Coleman is the first woman to play the part. Coleman also may be familiar to you as companion Clara Oswald on "Doctor Who.." I must say that she is one of the many highlights of the show & there have been discussions about a spin-off. I hope it happens.
Can't wait for u to see ep 4, next 3 eps are masterpieces
Re: Constantine sucks - that's basically the character in a nutshell. They're cool, they're funny, they're quick witted, they will outsmart devils and demons and angels like it's going out of fashion but they are also absolute poison to everyone who knows them. They survive horror after horror while one friend after another pays the price.
So yeah, they're an asshole. But if you need someone to run rings around Satan, there's literally nobody better.
As for Matthew, Patton Oswalt's voice is a bit jarring but the main purpose of having him around is to give Dream someone to bounce off, otherwise there'd be a whole lot of Dream narrating and explaining things to the viewer, the books have a lot of monologuing from him. Matthew just gives an outsider perspective and a more natural way to reveal things to the audience.
Traditionaly, the club Constatine was in is in Newcastle - around 20 miles from where I live. Don't worry, they knocked the place down ;)
“The talking bird thing is throwing me off” hehehe wait til you meet Mark Hamill as Merv 👀
"Do you even know who your talking to?"
Trust me Constantine doesn't give a toss
Matthew the talking raven makes perfect sense...if you were dreaming
the "hospital" that Jhon was in, in the comics is Arkham Asylum, but on the show they couldn't use that name for copyright reasons if I'm not mistaken, so it gets a little confusing. (although Sandman is from the DC universe and the comics have a lot of references and appearances) love u guys
in the comics John Dee is in Arkham Asylum.
"there's a lot of dark shit in this show"
Oh, you haven't seen anything yet.
"I'm endless"
The guy with one arm explaining how big it is
The ziploc 🤣🤣🤣
She's not 116. The amulet of protection was keeping her alive that long. She was already in her late 20's / early 30's when she came into ownership of it. Making her closer to 140-150.
Episode 4 PLEASE!!! 🖤
Argh!! How can you guys wait from week to week?? I can’t even wait for your reactions and I’ve seen the whole series twice already!! BTW, John wasn’t in prison, he’s in a mental hospital. And in the comics, he was actually in Arkham Asylum and his roommate was The Scarecrow. But this show can’t use the other DC properties because of copyrights. And I bet you’re gonna LOVE Matthew!! He’s the comedic relief to Dream’s very serious demeanor. Plus, he’s a fan favorite!!
In the comics John is a super-villain known as Doctor Destiny and the prison/hospital he is locked in is Arkham Asylum in Gotham.
It seems the creators of the TV show kinda want to keep it separate from the rest of the DC universe. Johanna Constantine is also an alternate version of a comics character called John Constantine.
The Hospital John Dee is in is Arkam Asylum in Gotham
I’d recommend you guys watching Constantine (2014) it unfortunately only lasted 1 season but he was then added to the Arrowverse.
"Yo Dawg, we heard you like dreams, so we put dreams in your dreams so you can dream while you're dreaming."
Ih episode 4 is gonna be I treat im so excited for your reaction

Thr talking bird waa cool to me and he did have one in the first episode
Episode 4,5, and 6 are the best! Can not wait for your reaction, also The Last Kingdom. Greetings from Germany❤
11 is most definitely up there with 5 and 6. Absolute classics, all three of them, not that the rest of the series isn't also great, but these three episodes are some of the best of any series in a _long_ time.
@@mbpoblet yes 11 of course!
i felt like you did about matthew at first because this episode is very dark and sad but you will change your mind. Matthew is actually really good for Dream and provide the story some humor. but not to much that it changes the dark vibe of the story i feel like. but the story is totally weird but good at the same time i have not seen a show like this before it feels like different shows or season of af show mixed together. and there are so many characters who feels like the leading role and dream is always there in the back looking. but once you think you found the main Villain or character it changes.
Another good episode....
Can't wait for you to react to episodes 5 & 6
Nothing as elaborate as Magneto's cell... and the wrong franchise. It was originally Arkham Asylum.
BOOM! Lets go!
The mom's death reminds me of melisandra's death in game of thrones
Steven: Lotta dark shit in this show. Next 3 episodes : hold our beers.😂
Nikki your makeup is gorgeous!
Ethel is older than 116...she has had the Amulet of Protection for 116 years, so she is 116+however old she was when she traded for it. I'm saying closer to 140...
Not sure how far you are after posting this. But really get yourselves ready for episode 5, and Nikki get your tissues ready for episode 6! Love your reactions to the show!
Fuck this episode is just an emotional gut punch, ik people mostly praised ep5 and ep6 but this one has a special place for me it’s just 🤯
Sandman is in Batman universe , that prison John is actualy Arkham Asylum , its all part of Justice League : Dark and Hellblazers , shame that Mat Ryan couldnt play as Constantine he was epic in that role - thrue to comic books ( i love Keanu Reaves but Mat was most as original one ) but Joane seems interesting too , i whould love to see her more defo . What Constantine dreams was actual real thing - He never recovered from losing Astra to demons and he keeps continuing dreaming about it , i strongly recomend to you to watch Constantine tv show it was really really good
