🌪BIG surprise! I already planned to watch but haven't. Guess I have to watch asap now. Always excited to start another show and with Last Kingdom and now this I'm more than excited! 😁
Nice! This show is incredible!
💤 I don't own the correct emoji so I chose this one.
Get ready for a beautifully weird and horrifying ride guys whatever you think is about to happen is not what’s going to happen
🌪
The sleep epidemic described in the opening is a real event; an outbreak of encephalitis lethargica that roughly coincided with the flu epidemic after WW1. It's estimated to have infected a million people, and is the subject of the film "Awakenings".
It is nuts that that was real, never heard about it
I loved that detail. Always cool when fiction weaves in fact with alternative causes.
@@shadowseer07 Between 20 million dead from WWI and ~50 million from the Spanish Flu, 1 million people dying from another sickness becomes background noise.
Yeah, Neil did a LOT of research before he started writing the books the show is based on.
Awakenings has Robin Williams and Robert DeNiro. It's well worth a watch.
To answer Nikki’s question about the bird:
Jessamy is a pied crow, an African member of the Corvid family that ravens, magpies, and other crow species belong to. It’s easy to see why some people might mistake it for a magpie, which is superficially similar, but the pied crow has much more in common with a raven than other crow species.
And here I was feeling rather smug for thinking it was a magpie. I’m not that great with identifying birds but I was sure I got this one right. Lol
and the fact that these birds were real is mind-blowing to me. Tom had like 4 trained ravens and Jessamy's raven is called Velcro!
@@ayaehab I didn’t know that. Very cool. 😁
@@mandelbot5318 They are incredibly smart creatures and can be trained.
@@ayaehab As a birdwatcher and a philosopher, that I did know. Amazing birds. 😁
This is one of the strongest adaptations I have ever seen, they capture so much of the story while still making necessary changes for format. So many scenes are just series of panels from the comic with near 1 to 1 dialogue. It’s an achievement on that aspect alone, not mention the amazing casting, acting, directing, score and cinematography.
I agree! Having read the comics, I was very pleased with this adaptation.
The main thing I'm not a fan of so far is the extension of time that Dream was held captive, I think it strains the timeline a lot and makes certain things less believable, but it's a minor quibble. It's been much better in live action than it had any right to be, considering, fortunately Neil Gaiman was a major part of the process and was able to make it lived up to what it should be.
And by the way, great choice of profile image.
Nice.
Tom Sturridge (The Sandman) does an amazing job in facial acting, all that we feel and express while watching the scenes of his capture is emulated in his face. Which is so powerful
Hes a sad boi, always pouting (or waiting for a kiss). But I loved his performance. Actually, everyone was stellar in this show.
Olof book Sandman never struck me as a sad brooding goth and in fact to me exuded warmth and compassion and humanity throughout the graphic novels! Even with his eerie font lettering word balloons!
His dialogue were like 3 sentences in this episode (not counting the narration) yet his face and eyes convoyed so much emotion.
Nikki: "So pretty - what kind of bird is this?"
Well damn....
The punishment in the comic is a little bit more detailed then the TV. when Sandman got free he put the kid into an endless looped dream where he wakes up from a nightmare only to realize he still in a nightmare to wake up again, just to realize he is still in a nightmare. That is the waking nightmare that dream put him it.
Gaiman (as well as his frequent collaborator Pratchett) has a great talent for portraying characters who embody concepts, while anchoring them in real history, science and trivia.
Ooh, finally some more reactors that I follow watching Sandman. Trust me, you will love it. The whole season was amazing.
Yeah, this show is criminally underrated in the commentary/reaction community.
@@petrinafilip96 Totally agree
@@petrinafilip96 I didn't see that much if any marketing around it
was avout to comment the exact same thing
Crazy. I said the same exact thing after watching GETjaby
Simply THE best comic in my lifetime and after 30 years, Neil Gaiman's Magnum Opus has finally been unleashed upon the world! My 19 year old self never thought it possible and I am SO glad to be wrong. This show is just stunning, enjoy guys!
I read them around 19 yrs of age in the early 90s...changed me...this series is so faithful to the source material. Excellent stuff.
I read them all when I was the same age. I really never thought they could do it justice on the screen, but they pulled it off. I'm just glad they never turned it into a movie, you need a series to give it the depth it needs.
@@Davemented indeed
Hey, my people!
I was probably around that age, maybe a scootch older.
My favorite comic of all time, and a story that's nestled deep in my mind. I'm over the moon that it's been adapted, and it's just astonishingly well done.
Sleeping Sickness is actual a real thing and the epidemic really happened at the time. It´s called Encephalitis lethargica.
Neil Gaiman made sure this is extremely true to his series, its really quite extraordinary to be alive in a time when this can happen and not look terribly cheap.
It's amazing how many times Gaiman said no to people bringing it to the screen. And now you can tell he's ecstatic. In my mind, if an author is that happy, you know good shit is happening.
Tom sturridge "dream" did an amazing job.. You can understand him even with few words❤️❤️
So, so excited for y'all to cover this one!! Enjoy!
This show is so good! And so sad...
@@maul8384 What does 'woke' mean? I'm from Europe(Finland) and I still don't really understand it. Edit: What comes to good wrighting and bad wrighting I understand - when Hollywood tried these weird storylines due to Chinese market.
The Sandman is a DC comic book series. The TV show is loosely connected to the current DC universe. Honestly, this is one of the greatest stories ever told in my opinion. And I personally believe the TV show is one of those rare adaptations that truly captures the essence of the source material, while simultaneously creating a story digestible for all audiences. Great decision to react to this 🙏💜
As a reader of the graphic novels, you would recommend it??
@@genghisgalahad8465 💯 yes!
@@genghisgalahad8465 absolutely :)
@@genghisgalahad8465 Its got a few faults, the TV version is a lot nicer, characters that are viciously self-interested have got a more good natured motivation, a few characters have had to be changed because of studio ownerships problems but all in all its afairly good and very spectacular translation of the stories.
**SPOILER QUESTION***
Have you watched all of them yet? I liked some of them some of them are really great and then I got like later in the and I lost sort of interest in the plot probably because the Sandman isn’t as part of it
Great series! I think you will love it.
FYI: the sleeping sickness they referenced was a real thing. No one knows what caused Encephalitis Lethargica, but it lasted for nearly 20 years and ravaged Europe. Few remember it, because of the Spanish Flu that came before and the Great Depression that hit shortly after the Sleeping Sickness began. The news of it got lost to history by those other two calamities.
The movie "Awakenings" with Robin Williams and Robert DeNero was about that as well.
Medical historians think it may have been caused by a certain strain of polio, but can't be sure.
I've read some on it, and the mysticism that was prevalent in the early parts of the 20th century definitely had interesting theories on the cause.
To me, this is one of the best adapted from comics shows I've ever seen. The casting, effects, sound, everything just so spot on to what the comics did.
As someone who has read(and own) the complete comic series, seeing it brought to life like this gave me chills. It's unbelievable that they were able to portray The Sandman so well.
Subscribed!
small note! the sleepy sickness here, encephalitis lethargica, was real, and occurred around that time. the comics mention it starting with a hundred people or so, but the true number affected is unknown, yet likely was around a million, half of whom had died.
The show is very faithful to the graphic novel, the creator was very involved in the show! Dream and the endless are some of the most fascinating characters in DC and the sandman comics are considered some of the greatest graphic novels ever written!
It was nice to see Benjamin Evan Ainsworth aka Miles Wingrave of "The Haunting of Bly Manor" in this as Alex Burgess.
Right? Such a talented kid!
He is such a great little actor good screen presence
I am soooo ready for this ride.. I can't wait to see the reaction to ep 5 and 6 especially. They did so good to honor the comics..
I'm so glad you guys are doing the Sandman. This series has become one of my favorites this year. I loved every episode and that's rare because a lot of series have filler episodes and they are normally okay, but for me, every episode of the Sandman was fantastic in its own way. From the gorgeous visuals to the storytelling, and acting, everything is phenomenal. I think you guys are going to love it😊
this is a nice surprise! I haven't read the comics either but really liked most of the show, especially the inclusion of so many black women with really complex storylines and the interesting meditations on humanity and the purpose of dreams. Wanna watch it again to catch some things I missed
The Sandman is such a great comic book series.
I first heard about the comic through the Fox/Netflix series "Lucifer" (which is loosely based on the sandman) so hearing about this show being made I was eagerly excited to watch it. And now my favorite reactors are watching it!
Lucifer has his own comics I wouldn't say it was based on the sandman more that the lucifer from the show is loosely based on the DC comics lucifer whom was originally shown in the sandman comics though he has appeared in other things since including his own comics.
Woo hoo! Totally excited and happy to see you guys react to the show. Neil Gaiman's stories are always a blast (American gods, good omens, and now, the sandman)
Welcome to the Sandman, you are in for quite a ride. It will be a beautiful disturbing trip full of drama and comedy and nothing is what it seems and everything is exactly what it is. I've never read anything quite like it, and I don't know that there is much that I've enjoyed more. This is very faithful to the original and incredibly well done. The guy with the weird eyes is call the Corinthian, there are more to meet in the episodes to come.
The species of bird they used for this episode (even though they call it a raven) is an African pied crow. Stay tuned for more birds in this series though! 😊
Yessss. I think this was a good choice for you guys, not everyone is reacting to this show right away! 🌪
This show is really a thrilling ride and the main character is so so interesting to watch
This could never have been done justice in a movie. Giving it a full -length treatment like this is what it deserves. I'm looking forward to watching this again with you.
Nikki & Steven I love how strongly you go into shows blind by your fans requests! It makes the experience so much more valuable. Watching Sandman with you guys!
I liked this show from the first episode, I like a lot of fantasy, scifi stuff and this one grabbed me ASAP, binged it
You are going to LOVE this series! It’s exceptional, visually stunning in almost every frame. There are 2 episodes that really stand out and are possibly the greatest 2 hours of television you’ll ever see!
Sweet dreams x
Hell yeah!!! What a pleasant surprise. Thank you so much Nikki & Steven. You have given me all the entertainment I could need.
Such a great, captivating first episode! Glad you're watching this!
I'm so happy that you are reacting to this show. I absolutely loved it. I had read the graphic novels although it had been 20 years since I had read them. This has made me want to read them again.
This was the first show I binged all in one day. 10/10.
Bro, this isn’t just up your alley. This writing has been inspiring people since the 80’s. It helped design the alley we all came to inhabit.
Great show, looking forward to enjoying it along with you two!
Yes!!! Finally...... one of my favorite reaction channels started reacting to this show. I also asked Late to the party but they said they are not going to react to this show, which was sad. But Thank you, guys! You just made my day. I hope your guys enjoy it. I have binged and watched all the episodes within a day. It's been almost 2 years since a show got me that hooked. It's not perfect but it's not bad either. Plus, the dark fantasy tone of the show is the main reason that got me hooked.
Yes, thank you for reacting to this!! Genuinely confused why more reactors aren’t paying attention to this series, lol.
I’m so excited you’re doing a review of Sandman. I didn’t know much about it either but turned out I love it so much. Can’t wait to hear your thoughts.
Welcome to the brilliant world of Neil Gaiman! If you enjoy this, there is so much more waiting for you. Enjoyed this so much! 💚
Oh yeah! You are going to love this. It gets dark and creepy and then hopeful and uplifting. It's great. Neil Gaiman is one of my favorite writers of all time. This is his magnum opus!
Comic book fans have been waiting decades for this 😂❤ I'm so happy we finally got an adaptation for the best graphic novel series of all time
I'm so glad you're doing this one. It's so incredible. I've been a fan of this beautiful story since the early 90s and I never thought they'd make it into a tv show, much less one that is this fantastic. They couldn't have found a better Dream in Tom Sturridge.
Nice this is one of my favorite comics and they did a great job of bringing it to life. Welcome to The Sandman fandom.
Similar experience on my side. I went in with zero idea and this was recommended to me by a friend. Totally obsessed. I HOPE you enjoy episode 4 and 6 as much as I did. Blown away 🙌🏻
Man, The Sandman was my favorite comic book series when I was in high school. Such fabulous writing.
This has been my favourite story, not just comic book, but favourite story in all of media since I first read it 10 years ago. Glad it finally got adapted!
ur in for a real ride with this show,it has one of the best writing i ever seen in a tv show ever,ur gonna love it.
So excited that you guys are reacting to this!!! I am a huge fan of the comics, and I absolutely loved the Netflix adaptation. All of the episodes are amazing, but I'm particularly looking forward to your reaction to the sixth episode. Glad to be along for the ride!
As a Sandman fan who read it from the beginning 30+ years ago, I have to tell you that this season was fantastic. You're in for a wild ride and prepare for possible tears in episode 6.
So glad you’re doing this. Loved the comic & all the actors are fantastic in this
You’ll love it
You guys are pretty great - never saw the channel before but got it recommended and this was lovely. Love the personalities y'all bring.
There is one word that perfectly describes this as a truly great pilot episode, HYPNOTIC. Tom Sturridge has such a soothing and relaxing voice that it almost makes you want to sleep, and I mean that in a very good way.
And speaking of powerful voices, Charles Dance proving once again he is one of the best actors around. That man has so much base in his voice he can speak at normal volume and you can hear him from like 30 yards away.
The sandman is a series of comics created by Neil gaiman. Neil was also a major part of the creation of this show, he was involved in pretty much every aspect of making it. Jesamay dreams raven was human before dying and becoming his raven. Paul Alex's boyfriend released dream on purpose. The Corinthian has teeth or mouths as eyes, he's also been killing ppl in the waking world while dreams been prisoner for 100yr. Can't wait to see your reactions going forward!
This series is unbelievable. Thats how good it is. There is one particular episode that had me in TEARS. I lost my mum on Saturday and just so happened to be watching this series at the same time. Its amazing.
LOVE that you're watching this amazing show! It's absolutely fantastic and mind-bending. So excited to see you on the journey!
It's interesting to see two completely new perspectives! Hope this makes you find your way to the comics or the audiobooks.
This series gets crazy! Glad you’re reacting to it.
There really was a worldwide phenomenon of people stuck catatonic in 1916. If you've seen the movie Awakenings with Robin Williams, that's what it was based on.
Been a Sandman fan sense the 90's and I loved watching The Sandman cast his spell over you two.
Yay! So excited that you two were able to add The Sandman to your schedule 🖤. One of the best adaptations EVER. Looking forward to (re)watching along.
the adaptation from the comics is **insane**. it's so good and thoughtful and I can't wait to see what you guys think as you go through it.
I am SO happy you are watching /reacting to this! It’s so good!
So excited u guys are watching this 😊 it’s such a departure from other comic book shows and I love the dark aspect of it
It is truly one of the best graphic novels of all time in my opinion and the way they made the show is great too.
I think all of us were ready to protect Nikki at all costs when Roderick told Alex to shoot the bird.
Awesome, can't wait to see your reaction to the next episodes. They just keep getting better and darker, I loved this series. I'd never heard anything about it before I watched it, but man now I love this universe, can't wait for season 2 already lol
Episode 6 could be a standalone movie and I'd go to the theater for multiple watches. Best piece of entertainment in Years.
One of only five comics/graphic novels to make the NYT Best Sellers list (although I've still never read it), but want to after I finish the series. There's also a really good audio book that came out not long ago, but there are some amazing episodes coming up (I've got two to go) and can't wait to see your reactions!
This is one of the most captivating shows I’ve seen. The writing is phenomenal.
This show looks so damn good.
You can already tell it from episode 1!
Sandman was one of my favorite books back in the 90s and this adaptation is very faithful. Hope you guys enjoy it. Love watching you!
Omg, I’m so glad you guys are watching this! You are going to love it! It’s so emotional and the storyline is great!
It just gets better and better. It lured me in and then I binged it! So frigin good!!!
Yes - my favourite commenters reacting to my new favourite show! I've followed your Better Caul Saul reactions and can't wait for your reaction to this!
I have been a big fan of Sandman for 30 years and long suspected it was too fantastical to ever see a film adaptation. But this first season was amazing. Nikki and Steven, if you liked the first episode, you are in for a story - including the mythos of The Endless - that will literally blow you away! Enjoy!
yaaay so happy you’re reacting to it!! i’m in love with this show
So so excited to see y'all's reaction! It just gets better from here!!
I grew up reading the comics this is based on, and I LOVE seeing you folks encounter the world for the first time.
strangely enough missed you two while away for 4 months. this is a great show, glad your checking it out
it was more than a century, he was summoned and captured in 1916. and than when he gets out its suppose to be 2021, so he was in their for 105 years
Omg I am SO excited that you guys are going to watch this show. It is fantastic, and I think you’ll have a good time.
Yes! I just finished this on my own and I can’t wait to rewatch the rest of the series with you guys!
For a long time I was looking for a series that would meet my requirements both in terms of content and appearance... THIS SERIES IS MEGA
Really glad you guys are checking this series out. I first discovered it through _The Sandman: The Dream Hunters_ because I'm a huge fan of the illustrator, Yoshitaka Amano. After reading that my friends told me to check out the graphic novels. Decades later there are still concepts and images from the comics that worm their way back into my brain. It's really something else.
I'd love to see The Dream Hunters adapted
YEEEES!! Been waiting for you guys to react to this show! It's one of my favorite shows of all time and I say that with pride! "The Sandman" is simply a piece of incredible art, so damn amazing! You'll be on a roller coaster for the rest of the season, that's for sure. lol
What a way to make a Monday amazing. I loved the books and loved the show. Can’t wait to see y’all react to it 👍🏽🫶🏽👏🏽
You guys are in for quite an experience! Can’t wait! ❤️
Nikki's reaction to the poster ad was the same for me when I saw the cover of Sandman #16. Even though that was the conclusion of the Doll's House story line, it intrigued me to buy the next issue too. From there I was hooked and bought all the back issues as soon as I could. My only tattoo is the talisman against bad dreams.
Happy to see that you’re watching this! This show really surprised me. Amazing visuals, acting, and music!
Random bit of trivia: The comic series established (retroactively) that the old Golden Age comic book hero The Sandman (a masked vigilante who wore a gas mask and fought criminals with smoke bombs and sleeping gas and fists) was inspired to go out by terrible & prophetic dreams that were caused by Dream’s imprisonment.
Another creative team picked up on this and did a long-running noir series set in the 1930s & 40s, with some amazing (if often amazingly weird) art: Sandman Mystery Theater.
Yesssss, so excited you decided to react to this amazing show!!!
So happy to see my favourite reactors watching this, especially with a completely new perspective 😁💯🔥
I'm so happy you took this on!
I've been waiting for you guys to start this series. It's become my fav new series
This is one of the best series Netflix has ever released! I will be tuning in for every reaction
