    I love how Dream calls peoples' lies in this episode "dreams." The people may not be speaking exactly how they feel, but they are saying their intentions. They are trying to be nice, they are trying to be helpful, they are trying to not hurt each others' feelings. Those are all good thing, that John just calls 'lies.' But instead they are dreaming of a better world or situation and speaking to that.

    I just now caught this: Dream is talking to John like an adult talking to a child. A child that is doing something immensely dangerous and the adult is trying to get them to stop, using language that they can understand. I've gotten the impression that Dream also moved the battle to the Dreaming so that the Waking World wouldn't be damaged any more than it had been by the Ruby's power, in addition to the reason Dream stated.

    • @Ryuu44
      @Ryuu44 2 роки тому +63

      It make sense. Jhon spent however many years locked up in a room, and before that he couldn't have a normal socializing process while having the power to make dreams come true. It's like he stopped his growth at a level apropriate for a preteen child. His entire plan is naive like a child's idea of a perfect world: "My mommy lied to me, so lies are always bad, and if I made it so that there's no more lies, then the world will be saved, and perfect". The fact that he celebrated by taking a tub of ice cream is a huge give away as well. :)

      You're actually correct. In the comics John has a really childish way of speaking also, not just the childish actions. He's kind of endearing at first, even though he's locked up in Arkham Asylum (where DC villains caught by Batman go), and he is just shown as a dangerous person when he kills the lady who gave him a ride to the ruby. In the series it became much more subtle, but you got it.

    In the end Dream doesn't punish John because he knows it wasn't really his fault. The Ruby broke him, it was too much power for a mortal to bear, and as Dream said, "it came to you through no fault of your own." Dream chose compassion over retribution, which shows an evolution in his character.

Dream understood that the ruby wasn't meant for human hands and it wasn't John's fault that he became enthralled with it. Glad that they fleshed the diner scene out verses the comic. Giving the people inside more development made what John did far more horrifying than if it had just been part of a montage of events across the world. The next episode is a great salve after this one.

    • @ShadowyFox_86
      @ShadowyFox_86 2 роки тому +18

      Gaiman said that was one area he wanted to reimagine. He still wanted to start at (and get to) the same place, but he was taking a different path story-wise on the way. To me, it feels so much more horrifying. Like a creeping dread and fear where the "wrongness" of what John's doing slowly unfolds. As awful as the violence is, I'm not sure it's the scariest part.

      How's this compare to the comics graphic novel series?

    • @Megan-eh7sk
      @Megan-eh7sk 2 роки тому +15

      @@genghisgalahad8465 It's very similar, though the show focuses more on the buildup while the book spends much longer with John controlling the people in the diner. For example - in the book, the married couple just come in and eat, without any argument about the food or the texting. Later, the book has a much longer and brutal fight between the husband and the young guy, with the husband killing the young guy by tearing his throat out with his teeth. I think the creeping dread and building tension worked really well for the show, but would have been less effective in print in the book. The protracted look at how John was able to use the gem to manipulate people worked for the book, but wouldn't have been good tv.

    • @shannonbutler-williams7261
      @shannonbutler-williams7261 2 роки тому +1

      @@genghisgalahad8465 I think some of it played a lot different. John is WAY crazier in the books and not benevolent if misguided in his efforts. The violence is extending throughout the world, and the diner scene goes on for a long time. They hold him as a God, the fingers are cut off to offer to him as a sacrifice. He gathers them around to watch the increasing horror on the news, they devolve into an orgy of violence and sex that he spectates on. To me, the cruelest part of the comic is that they're given their minds back for a little while, knowing what's happening. John is also different save a sports coat the whole time. This plays more effectively. The fight with Dream is almost identical, minus John scratching his butt while Dream has him in his hand.

    • @QuayNemSorr

      @@lissy2000us I think what primarily set it apart from me is the different take of John Dee. In the comic he is a shriveled up madman and obviously a villain that play a sick game with people peeling away the layers of their humanity.
      In the show he's much more a normal man. With motives you can actually understand giving how his life has been. And somehow that makes him more scary to me. He's not set apart from humanity, he's very much a part of it with a simple wish: Let's be honest with each other. And dreams purpose and power shines brighter for it.
      And they made the episode so you could cut the tension with a knife. With very simple yet effective means for every loop. As Steven said, John just feels "off".

    Just as Morpheus said “Their dreams kept them alive, but if you rob them of their dreams, if you take away their hope, then this is the truth of mankind” as he points out the harm John had caused. I do love the idea of a more honest world, but John Dee takes that to an unnecessary extreme. With untruths such as dreams, we can motivate ourselves to walk paths that take us to places in our lives that we never thought possible.
    Goddamn Neil Gaiman keeps proving once again his is of the greatest writers of our time.

    The book was darker, and was so much more disturbing. Good news is the next episode is very much a cleansing and is even more different. But in a good way. John was insane, part from his father but a lot from his mother keeping him moving and hiding and telling me that the Sandman was coming to kill them. He was pretty much placed on a road into madness by that and then the gem came into his hands and he could not handle that mind bending power of it. John was probably a decent person underneath the madness, but I think Dream understood that the gem had warped him. He's probably stuck in a dream of how he could have been, how everything could have been different if the gem was never in his life.

    So remember how a couple episodes ago you both said you wanted this show to keep being dark and gritty?? Well here's the darkest and grittiest episode of the entire season >:)
    I like how Bette mentions her son's in college yet by the time Marsh mentions he goes up to the son's room we've all forgotten and get really tense and uncomfortable and then Marsh says he's 21 and we're all like "oh nvm, that's fine then"
    What I really REALLY appreciate about this episode is that it's almost as dark as the comic version in terms of messed up stuff happening but the overall theme changes and makes the story much visceral. In the comics John forces the diners to do these things for his entertainment but here he's basically just giving them permission to be themselves. So the story isn't "what happens when a man who can control people get 24 hours with them in a diner" but rather "what happens when humanity is allowed to act on its most basic impulses without any self censoring or restriction?" Forcing people to kill and mutilate each other is evil but forcing people to be honest and seeing that that results in them killing and mutilating each other/themselves leads to some very grim self reflection about ourselves as individuals and a species. Masterpiece of an episode
    "It's almost like we're not even watching the same show" that's the beauty of the comic and show, it's an anthology series but there is an overarching narrative going on. Or at least the first 6 episodes (Preludes and Nocturnes arc) are like that, 7-10 (The Doll House arc) are much more linear and connected. And then there's 11 which is just in a league of it's own

    John Dee is Dr. Destiny in DC comics, who, while dream was captured, used the dream stone to torture the Justice League. If you guys have ever considered reading graphic novels, the whole series is phenomenal. Can’t wait for y’all to see episode 6!! 🥰

    The comic version was even more violent, but also seriously random and chaotic. And John was just sort of 'chaotic crazy.'

    In response to the whole "who the hell was that" at the end, the siblings' names all start with D and these are all of their names (to prevent spoilers because of the OLDER brother thing) in no particular order. Delirium (once known as Delight), Dream, Desire, Destruction (in the next episode, when they refer to "The Prodigal" this is who they're talking about. no spoiler, they never mention this in the tv show so far, but it comes up in the comics), Destiny, Death, and Despair.

    Dream could have easily killed John for what he did, but he recognised that John wasn't really at fault for what the ruby did to him (just like Rachel with the sand) Plus the fact that John was locked away for years, so his simplistic view of other people and being so focused on lying, was very childlike and emotionally stunted.
    I feel like Dream definitely took the lesson that Johanna taught him to heart, that they're not all like Roderick Burgess, and that there are good people in the world.
    Aswell as the fact that she inspired him not to just leave Rachel there to die in pain, but to help her pass on with the help of a good dream.
    What I love about this episode, and as the series goes along, is that Dream is noticeably learning to be more compassionate and more understanding towards humans and humanity in general.

    The whole "He's 21" was added on for the show to make it a little less bad, but not really. If you think about it a little longer he was with her while the "kid" was at home, and stopped coming around when he left for college. Strongly implying that he was doing things before college. You sort of have to read between the lines a bit more.
    In the comics it's even worse. She thinks her son is off to the world, and he tells her he actually saw her son being pimped out in prison for cigarettes. And then he says he paid a pack for a turn. Again, keeps calling him "little Bernard" and strong implying that he abused her son at home until he ran away and got messed up in drugs because of his trauma. Or at best if you don't catch on to the implications he found her son as an addict in prison being assaulted for payments and instead of rescuing the kid he practically helped raise, had a turn too...
    Either way it's a horrifying shock, and horrible.

    I think the protection amulet reads intent. Real intent to cause harm. After all, Rosemary almost ran John over. Hit him with a car. His life was in danger. Yet no one was meaning to harm him.
    Could also respond to only life threatening situations as well. Maybe a punch or a fight might not activate it? No idea there.

    • @erinhartley799
      @erinhartley799 2 роки тому

      Came here to say just this. The amulet didn't react when Rosemary hit John with her car, so the amulet clearly can tell the difference between intent, accident, and severity.

    John only did two things: prevented people from lying or keeping secrets, and prevented the people in the diner from leaving. Everything else was just the consequences of that. The moral of the story is that the lies we tell ourselves are just the dreams we wish were true. If we can't lie to ourselves, then we can't hope for a better life or a better world, and all the despair and misery come crashing down with that realization.

      It almost feels like this is worse than the Hell we experienced last episode. He's been so broken by lies that he's got a very twisted view that telling no lies make for a better world. But he puts so many things (that have nuance in their philosophical implications) under that umbrella.

      John even really seems to believe that is what he wants, and what he is achieving. I think what’s actually happening is the ruby is drawing from deep parts of John’s disturbed psyche of which he isn’t aware and can’t control. The ruby is taking that, magnifying it, and channeling it back out with some of Dream’s power infused into it. John isn’t Dream, so he is also affected by it (even if he’s unaware of that), feeding it back to him, and worsening his mental state as he uses the power. As Morpheus says, it is harming him.

  • @stephenhumphreys9149
    @stephenhumphreys9149 2 роки тому +1

    If what happens to John is the same as what happened to him in the comic, Dream simply returned him to the asylum, gave him a good night's sleep then left him. He didn't consider him to be at fault really, as the ruby had damaged his mind. Possibly one of the earliest signs of the changes Dream's imprisonment has had on him, as I suspect in the old days he would have punished him for what he did.

    I thought the question of the consequences of giving Rosemary the Amulet of Protection is actually an interesting one. No matter what good the amulet might do in one way, extending life, keeping people 'safe', it was an amulet given to Ethel by a demon. And I can't imagine any item given by a demon not ending up having bad side-effects. To recall what Morpheus said in the previous episode, 'A demon has a hundred motives for doing anything he does, all of them malevolent.' Also, interestingly, the Amulet itself, a series of circles spinning around a single eye is not dissimilar to how artists have depicted the Ophanim, creatures mentioned in the Bible which might or might not be angels, depending on your interpretation.

    Poor John was just sick and broken. He was obsessed with truth because all of his life was filled with lies, his mother constantly lied to him, they constantly had to tell lies about who they were and where they were from so that John’s father wouldn’t find them. It was almost as if the ruby possessed him, he became addicted to what the ruby could do by giving him a world filled with “truth”. But because the ruby wasn’t intended for how John used it, it corrupted him even further and the Sandman could see that it wasn’t really John’s fault, he deserved peace, which is really what John was looking for in the end.

    Also, John might think, we might think, that dropping our inhibitions makes us out truer selves but maintaining control of ourselves because we consider the feelings of others, the harm we could do to ourselves and to society, that thoughtfulness, mindfulness, is just as much a part of us as the part that is pure ID. ID is just a part or version of us, not a truer version and it can be narcissistic. It’s not the whole story.

    I can’t remember the name of Dream(Morpheus’) younger brother is, I’m sure it’s said by the end of the season, but a thought just occurred to me that he was introduced in this episode specifically because John D (B?) might make a return in S2. I don’t know if I’d like that or not. On one hand, it’s the return of villain who will undoubtedly have different, interesting and unique powers. On the other hand, it may be better to have a whole new roster and/or plot of villains.
