In the comic, "Men of Good Fortune" (of what this Hob Gabling adaptation is based on), Morpheus did not miss the 1989 meeting because he was captured for only 70+ years not 100+ years. The comic came out in 1989 (that being the present day then). They changed it to fit our present day 2021, 33 years late, for the storyline. It was rumored that at some point during the missing years, Death came to Hob and explained to him what happened ( but you can take that with a grain of salt though as it was never said or proven.). Season 1 is based on the first 2 volumes of Sandman. Volume 1 "Preludes & Nocturnes" and Volume 2 "The Doll's House". You can find them for sale at any large book store, worth buying and reading.

Great reaction as usual. Always thoughtful and insightful. This was a redeeming episode for me and yes it was like two episodes in one, but I think that has to do with the fact that it's being drawn directly from the comics. There's some deep concepts going on there as well. Not just with death, but with Hobs as well and my question at this point was "Why would desire and dream be at odds? Is it just the personalities of the individuals or is it deeper than that regarding their jobs?" Guess we'll just have to wait and find out.

Death has always been my favorite sibling of the Endless. The casting was brilliant and she really did bring everything you feel from the comic version of her to life. I'm hoping Sandman does well enough that we may get Death's spin-off stories. The High Cost of Living was an integral piece of literature for this young goth girl in the 90's. Edit* I'm in the Hob camp. If I was given the choice of immortality, I would probably take it because there is so much, so much to life and progress and humanity that we never really get to experience in our short mortal lives.

Also part of the Hob camp. All my life I've always been the only one who says "I wouldn't mind being immortal, sure" every time the topic comes up between friends and family, so getting to see Hob's perception on this and capturing what I think all of us who agree with him share is really magnificent.

Oh, yay! Already on Ep 6..... 🌹
(Fun fact: the first segment is a totally faithful, panel-to-panel adaptation of how it went down in the graphic novel/comics... that bench conversation's an iconic moment for many Sandman fans like myself and NG made sure it's gonna feel like it's lifted straight out of the page ^_^)
I just LOVE how the the 2 halves of this episode mirror each other! Notice how it starts off with a frowning Dream feeling lost and alone > then finishes up with a bit more hope in seeing Hob and with the rarest of smiles :p ... we first watch him learn (or re-learn) the meaning of DEATH, then later sees/appreciates the value of LIFE through his meetings with a human who can never die.
Another reason why this is one of my absolute favorite arcs in the series is the way Death handled that wager with Dream.... she made it sound like she did Hob a favor by granting him immortality... but what she really did was give her brother a FRIEND

Ya'll are pretty good lol. Good commentary, quips, and paying attention through your jokes so that you don't miss much even if you have to say something or throw a witty line out there. Missing moments due to inattention I can tell you is up there in what can annoy viewers. Watching you 2 it doesn't seem like a problem, be able to talk and watch at the same time. It sounds easier than it is for some reactors, but you'd be surprised. Subbed and looking forward to the next one and to check out your library and see what else you guys have on tap 🤙🏽

Fun fact: If you didn't catch it, Hob is grading papers at the end. He ended up becoming a... history teacher! Haha! Isn't that just the best job for someone who's lived so long? xD If you remember what he said, he said he always keeps making the same mistakes despite living so long. Like he doesn't learn. So after trying to money, fame, instead now he helps other know history so that maybe they can do things better. So that in 100 years, maybe things might be better : )

Two of the most popular stories, between two darker ones. Everyone misses Chaucer in the first pub scene, but they always get Shakespeare. Even Lushing Lou was based on a real person. They couldn't use John, so they lifted Johanna from this story, and the modern one is named after her.

Death actually didn't always like her job, in fact she hated it for a very long time until she got the idea to spend one day every century as a mortal and then reap herself. After she started doing this she saw the beauty in what she does, what she has to do.

People that were decapitated on the guillotine (which was a fast and surgical decapitation rather then previous attempts that usually require multiple blows) were apparently aware of their state until they finally died of oxygen deprivation. So I would suggest a decapitated Hob head would still be quite aware and alive, but otherwise quite helpless.

And for every answer you get, you'll probably have even more questions. Whether or not you ever get the answers to those questions will depend on how many seasons of the show they do. I'm guessing it will take at least 4 seasons to cover all the major story lines of the comics. Some of your (future) questions will be answered in Season 2, but others won't be answered until the very end. If the show doesn't last that long, you'll have to read the comics for your answers--which I recommend you do at some point regardless of how long the show lasts.
