    This is the episode that shows what Dream really is, saying he is the Lord of Sleep really sells him short. If you unpack what dreams actually are they are an incredibly complex mess of imagination, creativity and emotions (both positive, like hope and negative, like fear). Dream is lord of all of that.

    Gwendoline Christie is amazing as Lucifer Morningstar. She gives Lucifer this sense of regality and supreme authority that sadly we didn’t get much of in the Lucifer show. And the fact that the walls of hell are made of damned souls is so creepy but awesome at the same time. Plus the “duel” between them was like nothing I’ve ever seen before.
    I do wish we had gotten Tom Ellis and Lesley Anne-Brandt back as Lucifer and Mazikeen respectively because they were so perfectly cast before, and Neil Gaiman especially loved Tom as Lucifer, but I’m still happy we have who we have. It’s like exchanging a Lamborghini for a Ferrari.
    Also this episode proves that adaptations can sometimes be better than the original. In the comics Morpheus doesn’t duel Lucifer but Coronzon, and it doesn’t take place in that awesome throne room but in a sort of jazz club with Morpheus and Coronzon on stage on mics and the kings of hell (yeah Lucifer rules with 2 other kings) in VIP seats. And John Dee in the comics straight up murders the nice woman who drives him after she drops him off. But I much prefer that not only does he spare her but also gives her his amulet of protection because he thinks she is worth saving.

    Nikki, you are very perceptive about Hell seeming like the movie Constantine...because John Constantine is also in the original Sandman DC graphic novel (Johanna Constantine in this TV series iteration). And, that movie took a lot of design cues from Sandman and the Constantine comics. There were a lot of DC characters that made appearances in the Sandman, but with this being a Netflix property, they had to kinda remove those direct ties to the comic.

      The whole series is a masterful and very faithful adaptation, but in John Dee's case deviating from the books was definitely for the better; David Thewlis and the changes made to the character turned a one-dimensional and rather forgettable DC tie-in villain into one of the most memorable characters in the series.

    Morpheus rhymes to the rhyming demon to get him to open the gate. Suicide Forest has grown since he last visited. It might amuse you to know that Lucifer's look in the comic was based on David Bowie, and the duel actually did take place in The Hellfire Club. The duel in the show skips a couple of moves, but it started with a dire wolf when it was written decades ago. Whenever you see the light in Dream's eyes, it *is* the universe. Originally, John shot her dead once he had his ruby; this was a nice surprise for those already familiar with the story.

    Hope is such a master stroke of a response to Lucifer specifically. Not to mention the more direct attack later with dreaming of heaven (really, again, hope) for those imprisoned there.

      It's also the fact that you have to be able to embody the concept/creature you present in the Traditional Game. Idk if anyone else made this connection but notice how Luci’s palace is high up a tower hundreds of feet from the ground separated by the rest of the demons. If you know the origin of Luci and how he/she was exiled to hell and also recall Dream’s line, “what power would hell have if those here imprisoned were not able to dream of Heaven”. So I guess you could say that she dreams/hopes that one day she will be forgiven and accepted back to heaven by separating herself from the demons and being closer to heaven. And that’s the power that Dream have over her and everything else.

  • @felipeaquitral
    @felipeaquitral 2 роки тому +8

    One of the many cool things about this episode in the comics, and one that's almost impossible to translate to film because of the different "language" of both mediums, is that the bubbles of dialogue in the battle of wits are getting bigger and bigger with each "I am...", both duellists are basically trying to come up with a bigger, more powerful, thing to outsmart their opponent. Choronzon's style (in the comics, he's the one fighting Dream, here they chose Lucifer to make it more interesting, desperate and menacing I suppose, which is understandable) is pretty much coming up with the biggest, most deadly and powerful thing ever to win, but Dream takes the battle to another direction, and while Choronzon's bubble of dialogue is big and filled with text, Dream's bubble of dialogue has only 3 little words: "I am hope". And then he wins. To realize something so little but so powerful could win, it's genius. It's a pretty cool way of winning, and it's shown powerfully both in content (what hope means) as in style (how this little word is shown to defeat other concepts that seem grandiose and with more "weight" in text). It's one of my favourite moments of this issue.
    Here the battle was epic and I loved it, but maybe Matthew trying to pep talk Dream was too much for me, it felt disjointed from the seriousness of the battle.
    But regardless, this episode was fantastic and a great adaptation. Hell as a location was amazing. And Gwendoline Christie was magnificent as Lucifer. I love her design: immaculate, tall, one tone robes... and her acting: she almost doesn't move at all, like movements are superfluous, it's all in her presence... it also looks like she's trapped, almost as she's bound from head to toe, with no liberty to move (which I feel is a great reference to Lucifer being punished by God and being stripped of his/her glory); her menacing but oddly calm voice (like an angry - but not yelling - mother talking to a child); her sarcasm and display of power in every sentence... It was glorious. I love that Gwendoline was chosen for the role, because she has this like androgynous look sometimes and she's very beautiful too, so she has more than one "face". In the comics, Lucifer is based on David Bowie, so to me only 2 people would have been perfect for the role: either Bowie himself or a younger Tilda Swinton, Gwendoline Christie proved me she was perfect too.

  • @ThatBlackPiano
    @ThatBlackPiano 2 роки тому +1

    🙋🏽‍♀️🤓 Gwendoline Christie/Lucifer was not referencing GoT by mentioning “dire wolves” nor “picking your champion”. Dire wolves were a real animal that roamed the Americas for at least 250,000 years, until it became extinct towards the end of the last ice age around 13,000 years ago. During the Middle Ages a feature of Anglo-Norman law was trial by battle, a procedure in which guilt or innocence was decided by a test of arms. Clergy, children, women, and persons disabled by age or infirmity had the right to nominate champions to fight by proxy. I know you guys love GoT, but I promise you most of the conceptualized society George R. R. Martin presented was based on things that actually DID once already exist in the real world and MANY fantasy writers will reference them and will have nothing to do with GoT. 😏

    Fascinatingly, in the comics, Rosemary dies... and they deliberately changed that in the show to tell those who'd read the comic books that they couldn't rely on what they had read in the comics to know what was going to happen in the show. Removal of DC Comic elements, and the changes to characters (like Lucien becoming Lucienne and John Constantine becoming Joanna Constantine) gave a clue to that... but this was one of the first elements that _really_ let people know they weren't following the same road that they had in the comics. Not exactly, at least.

    Yeah Matthew's voice really grated on me. I have now become accustomed. I love this episode SO much. What a battle. totally beyond a petty struggle of physical bodies. And Gwendoline played Lucifer with this hint of brittle pain behind Lucifer's every fake smile. I totally believe it's the same character as Netfix's Lucifer.

      About Matthew's voice -- for quite a while, I just kept hearing and imagining HAPPY from that tv show.

    Here's something that they never explain in this series: Lucifer Morningstar as played by Gwendolyn Christie is the exact same character as the Lucifer Morningstar as played by Tom Ellis in the TV series "Lucifer." And by that, I don't mean "they're both playing the Devil with the name Lucifer Morningstar." I mean it is literally the same character, from the same comic book.

      The Ellis version really isn't all that connected outside of the basis for the concept. There is no real reconciliation with the rakish, sex addicted party boy of the tv show, and the apathetic brooder in the comic who's absolutely done with the Universe's bullshit.

      @@hermeticallysealed1 Isn't that connected, except for being the exact same character, from the exact same source material, created by the exact same writer.
