- The fretless guitar solo from The Bear, by my progressive rock band Liquid Bear. Pretty sweet melody and a cool tapping lick, which is the most difficult thing to do without frets (aside chords).

This is awesome. I legitimately feel like this is the only reasonable direction for guitarists to really go in if they wanna break new ground -- being able to slur into melodies must feel like such a joy! Like writing for the violin, but still distinctly its own thing!
Thank you for your comment!
Thing is, modern guitar playing, while being very interesting, is very rigid imo. That might be why fretless appears refreshing. It's because it is full of articulations and nuances and that contrasts with what you can find nowadays.
It's funny because fretless guitar is not new, It's been around for decades, but there's only a few people that plays it. I want it to become more mainstream!
That's why Terraformer by Thank you scientist is one of my favourite tracks of theirs. Tom Monda really knows how to use the fretless Vigier to his advantage and it really adds a different vibe to the guitar track.
beat to the punch by Obscura in 2015
I feel like the sound of sliding in and out of tune would become a bit redundant after a while though
cringe and wrongpilled
Love how natural it sounds. The human voice or the human hearing aren't fretted, and so fretless guitars, even though they take time to get used to, sound very natural.
Fully agreed!
Fretless has such a steep learning curve, but you make it sound fantastic in context. As a learner myself, this composition gives me some exciting ideas to try out. Cheers!
Thanks a lot! If any of what I do can inspire some people, I'll be glad!
Okay, now I got to buy a fretless guitar
Everyone needs a fretless!
A fretless guitar would require precision and a good ear to play though, and forming chords would be almost impossible.
There are ways to play chords on fretless guitar. Stacking 3 notes is not that hard, but needs practice and ear training. Adding more notes to a chord makes it way more difficult. Find the right shapes (rip barre chords), or go for alternative tunings that can make certain things easier.
@@randybrown8872Fretless guitar with fret location indicators would be marginally better
This makes a fretless balalaika build all the more appealing.
Please check the guthrie govan solo's in the song erotic cakes , is tremendous
If you're talking about the live version, on fretless, yeah I've seen it. And I love it!
Odd but legitimately cool
Enjoyed it.
Intonation is a little off in some spots but the idea you’re going for is incredibly awesome and creative, definitely worth the struggle of bringing into the world
Thanks! Fretless is a never ending learning process.
i think it makes it unique, in a kind of dirty and funky way
As a producer, I’ve gotta disagree.
Often times you end up opening auto tune on solos just to find it’s a 3rd or 5th dissonance from a foreign scale and decide to leave it in because it sounds better.
Many examples of this in classic rock.
I think solos perfect.
@@someprick7705 there are moments where you can’t really tell what’s going on. I have perfect pitch and synesthesia, i’m an autistic savant, i play 35 instruments, my qualifications trump yours. That said, it’s a fretless instrument, it’s to be expected. Same thing with violin; intonation must be super precise.
This feels like something that could easily fit into the risk of rain 2 ost
Great playing, the heavy "vibrato" is really cool sounding!
Thank you very much!
ça tu peux le dire ! Toujours au top 👍
Merci!!
I never knew such instruments existed
They've been around for a good amount of time, but are pretty hard to find, and too few people plays it.
Im getting me a fretless neck for my Tele this week. I play a fretless Uke bass. And i used to play Cello beforr mine snapped from wear and tear. Fretless guitar might be the way for me. I always preferred slidey vibrato over bends anyway. Such wide space for expression.
Where do you buy fretless neck for Tele?
sick
🙏
Didn't realize this would tick off purists! Haha! Will definitely be de-fretting a guitar now. Your playing is fantastic!
Thanks! 🙏 yeah, while fretless guitar has been around for decades, so few people actually plays it in modern rock contexts, which made it pretty unknown. So for some people, it feels new but also weird and sometimes even frightening I guess. Still a fun instrument tho!
I wish we could get Vigier guitars in the US that steel fretless neck is the killer feature its like a sarod!
Is it that difficult to find in the US?
@ilya_franciosi yes nearly impossible.
@@coyote-wang damn that sucks
sounds like a mastodon solo !
I love the tone, but does anyone know of another brand that makes fretless guitars? The only other ones I can find are too cheap to trust, or custom shop.
Yeah fretless electric guitars are tough to find, and most of the time they're pretty expensive, since kinda niche instruments. The only other options than Vigier that I came accross were all custom made for about 2000 to 3000 dollars. Sadly I don't know "affordable" options. What are the "too cheap to trust" guitars you've found? I'm curious.
I've seen people making conversion from fretted guitars. But I don't know the process, and don't know if it's worth it tho.
What website did you get that guitar?
It's a Vigier Surfreter Supra. You can check on Vigier's website to find everything you need to know. They only make those, they don't sell them. You'd have to find a dealer.
Been loving hearing some fretless guitar. I'd like to hear more vibrato. It's difficult to do tastefully. Watch cellists for inspiration. Thanks ❤
Thanks for your comment! I know I should dig more into other classic fretless instruments for inspiration. But I feel like my overall approach of the fretless guitar is quite weird in its own way and I don't know if I could really apply cellist's techniques in my playing. Will check it out tho!
@@ilya_franciosi@semnyi cellist and guitarist here, the vibrato on a fretless guitar/slide guitar and on a cello are very different. Cello vibrato is less intense- not suitable for electric guitar in my opinion, not enough change in pitch for it to sound good. Cello vibrato is also designed for the orientation of the cello neck, not the orientation of the guitar neck, which has a 90 degree difference. The best place to look for ways to improve your vibrato on a fretless guitar is watching the vibrato of slide guitar players. I personally think you are a very tasteful player and I love your use of vibrato
I will check out more cellist! Thanks for your feedback and advice!
Is that fretboard magnetic? Like…could you optionally stick frets to it? 🤔
I'm afraid not!
I bet you're sick of all the recommendations and "Advice" but I just wanna point over to Tom Monda of Thank You Scientist for making a fretless guitar absolutely --SHRED-- in context
Of course I know Tom Monda!
I mean, yeah they're built different, they're **built differently**
Great playing though!!
Thank you! And sorry if I make some mistake. English isn't my main language.
Sounds just like something Uli Jon Roth would play
Lindo apenas
🙏🙏
tabs?
Yes, tabs
@@ilya_franciosinice
I want one so baad but nowhere sells one
Yeah that's a shame that it's that difficult to find (and pretty expensive tbh). I hope that someday a brand can produce an affordable fretless guitar so that more people can play this great instrument!
spongebob goes metal
Why not tho?
How much of an influence is ron bumblefoot thal? 😂
I have many influences, and of course Ron is one of them!
I'm converting a Yamaha PAC212 into a half fretless neck.
I'd like to know the process!
@@ilya_franciosi Remove frets, fill fret grooves with white epoxy, sand and polish smooth
When you're done, feel free to send me some footage, I want to hear how it sounds!
Check out Tom Fountainhead.
Yeah I came accross his videos a few months ago. Nice stuffs on the fretless guitar!
@@ilya_franciosi Indeed. Excellent guitarist. Wrote most of Obscura's Akroasis album.
I will listen to this!
it is a long way on front of you
Wdym?
Fretless bass = heavenly sound
Fretless guitar = ew wtf
Sorry for your discomfort, but thanks for the comment tho!
This is why guitars have frets.
Thx for your input
Sounds like an Otamatone)
😂
Get rid of the loud backing and let's hear it.
What ?
fretless, quel horreur !!!
😱
@@ilya_franciosi
c'est pour dire que les note sont moins évidante a gérer que sur une guitare doté de frettes
Aaah au temps pour moi ! Et oui c'est pas évident et ça demande beaucoup de patience !
ick
Always nice to have some feedback
Not a fan of it, but still impressive either way.
Thanks for your feedback!
@@ilya_franciosiplease dont think this is any way discrediting your playing. You're incredibly talented. And you can certainly play. Far better than me thats for sure.
Don't worry, I didn't take it in a bad way at all!
Tbh I don’t like the sound.
Np man, thanks for stopping by and taking the time to listen to it!
Am I the only one who think that this is just... Awful? Just garbage?
Don't worry, there's always other haters here and there for you to hang out with ;) but thanks for stopping by tho!
Um... most of that sounded like shit.
That's so nice of you!
