When my dad (a legendary bassist) was teaching me fretless, I wanted to practice slides. But he kept telling me that fewer glissando makes them "special". I would practice them over and over after school before he came home. Then would practice intonation accuracy and exercise for an anti-buzz tightness that my little hands lacked. I always wanted more slides and the band director at school would say "no" and being in a cover band with my older brother is was also no. When I left home the JB fretless stayed with dad. I built one from a Silvertone in '77. It was years later that I realized he was right, effects, chords, solos, slides are ALL best in moderation. You reminded me of this with your solo on this video. Make the glis like the diamond among thousands of other rocks. The rest of the time play straight. I know YT is for athletic exhibitions of speed and goatness, but you probably have a smart enough audience to recognize/appreciate quality. My dad died in 2000, before 911. He wouldn't even recognize our world. But if he were here, he would certainly tell you: Make it sing with your soul, leave the gymnastics for the other guys.

I totally agree… I mean if you want to do a little vibrato or some thing. It’s already going to have a distinctive tone without doing those glissandos all the time. I think they get a little tiring to listen to. Less is more.

He only made them for himself and all of them were fretless. Every single one sounded beautiful, almost etherial, just incredible guitars. He was an awesome musician too.

I've been looking at fretless guitars for a while now, and though I can't afford any new gear I want one SO bad. And seeing this baritone makes me want one even more -- it's like making a guitar sing, a style of playing I want to experiment with and learn (being mainly a vocalist, this seems very fun).

35 years ago everybody said I'm a freak because I built myself a baritone fretless from an old Kramer alu shortscale bass-neck (ex duke-bass) and diy body. Result is quite satisfying because of the alu-neck. The more tight the neck the more you get sustain and a bright sound, and thats important for the plain strings which are a bit muted by the fingertip. Nice to see that the good ideas
    will not die...

recently had a guitar of mine professionally defretted, and i'm not sure i'll ever be able to go back. sure, chords are harder and the sustain is a bit garbage (at least on a regular guitar, baritones might fare better in that regard), but the gain in expression and access to any microtone imaginable make it absolutely worth it in my book. currently considering getting a custom made one, just to seal the deal. in any case welcome to the fretless guitar gang !

A great benefit of any fretless instrument is it becomes easier to correct for the tuning issues in 12-tone equal temperament. There are also tuning issues with the standard fretted guitar (which can be solved with warped frets, called "true temperament" guitars) that this can help overcome too. Of course, it takes a lot of skill.

Also a member of the vile family which had seven tide frets and the rest of the neck was fretless. They were very delicate due to the lack of technology back then.
I once took a six-string fretless bass and added lighter strings to it and use some very different tunings, some of my own and some from centuries ago. But the coolest thing was being able to run it through my rig and just getting some really cool sounds.

This video answers pretty much all the questions I had about the idea of a fretless electric guitar. Thanks, bud! 👍

It's unique and sounds pretty good. For my taste, I would prefer more of a baritone hybrid. Say maybe C# standard tuning
It's definitely beautiful but that upper bout is too much. I like to get my thumb around the neck

I would give my legs for a fretless guitar like this. Really cool video! Congratulations on that instrument.

That has to be the most gorgeous guitar I've ever seen, I absolutely _adore_ that body design, that is so unbelievably cool. Sounds eclectic and wonderful, too.

Wow, what an incredible instrument. I've never even heard a baritone before, this is just awesome, such a delicious shape and finish, omg. And your playing of course, the icing on the cake.

From the very first moment I saw the thumbnail, my first reaction was "is he playing a Cello"? It takes skill to hit the right point on the strings, but I notice they include more inlays on the fretboard to help with referencing where the frets would typically be. And. That guitar looks BEAUTIFUL.

I picked up the violin again this year after almost 20 years, and I found it incredibly hard after almost 20 years of playing guitar! Frets really are cheat codes for stringed instruments 😂 Good job on getting a lovely sound on this stunning guitar!

A friend of mine had a regular baritone custom made by a Polish luthier, Mr.Lemański. Splendid instrument. Still in use, inherited by another friend player. A beauty she is.

Good, clean baritone guitar playing is one of the most calming sounds in the world for me. Doing that, but fretless, is... pretty wild. And for as much as I'm a clean aficionado, I REALLY liked how it sounded with fuzz, and with the e-bow. Those were awesome.
Also: big props for sustainable sourcing. That's important.

The pick up functionality and the piezo is really cool. The body style is great because their will be no neck dive with the strap button so far up the neck. Form and function blended together to make a great instrument.

Your chords have the perfect amount of dissociative dissonance.
It's not quite dreamy but has those similar qualities of sounding sedated and feeling distant in a way.
I love it and can never find enough songs like it. Although, the better call Saul theme comes pretty close

That is a beautiful guitar for sure. A friend made me a guitar once ... a carved flamed maple top Les Paul type with a double cutaway and a Les Paul style headstock. It had a 25" scale through neck made with wenge, with a strip of maple through the middle, and an ebony fingerboard and headstock veneer. The two sides of the body were mahogany. It was his first carved top and he did a good job and the guitar sounded great ... a brighter sound for two humbuckers, but it was pretty darned heavy!

Check out the solo in Steve Wilsons Drive Home. From what i remember Guthrie Goven used a fretless vigier guitar with an ebow and in my opionion it is one of the greatest solos of all time.

I was wondering how it was that you could play that thing so well, man. Fretless is harder than hell because your positioning has to be really on point, they're unforgiving about a quarter inch in either direction. The fact that its your personal instrument that you had custom-built explains it, you didn't just get your hands on one to demo it. That is a beautiful guitar man, its going to open compositional possibilities you didn't have before. That's pretty exciting.

My childhood musical memories are filled with sounds of my mother playing piano, organ and cello. These guitar tones are really hitting my soul; simply unreal. I have been checking out baritones for some time now, and you and that guitar have blown my whole quest wide open; kudos, and damn you sir!

That's awesome. I've wanted a Browns Guitar Factory Fretted/Less Guitar for over a decade since I got to play one at NAMM in the late 2000's. It's fretted for the first 9 frets, but then the upper half of the fingerboard is frettless. They also have a fretted/less bass.

About two years ago I had a fretless classical guitar made which I have really fallen in love with. Even better is the baritone fretless classical that Cenk Erdogan uses, you might really dig that.
