- This was just supposed to be a joke for @joonyoung815 to set on fire, but I ended up offering to work on it and try to bring it back from the dead. Well, that was fun. Thanks.
James' Pyromancy: • 10 STRING GUITAR
For those curious, it's a 26" scale length - too short even for an 8-string

This is like watching a Civil War surgeon work on a hopeless patient but they actually survive in the end.
An apt metaphor haha. I'm not doing modern day surgery here, this is bite the bullet and amputation
For democracy son any man will be…… father I’m trapped and I can’t…….. enters Metallica riff. And head bangs
Man, those 8-10 strings are so articulate and responsive 😂
yeah, but the opposite

A whammy is need would make it sound better
When you showed that the strings could not come off without removing the saddles my mouth was on the floor.
It was pretty shocking to me too 😂
Never seen that before!
This guitar seems like it was built by someone who didn´t read the whole manual and skipped random but very essential things
😂😂😂 👏 well stated lol almost like they were angry at the guitar 🎸 as a whole. Needed a good laugh like that
Hey man words are hard and so is reading.
thats an alliexpress guitar for you
I own two Agile 10 string guitars and they're great. Lightweight, no headstock, they balance with a strap really well. I don't really use distortion with them though. I think you get the most out of a 10 string if you're looking to experiment with clean tones and chord voicings. At least that's what I've done and it's been fun.
Very much agreed
I dig what you're doing with it. This experience doesn't make me want to run out and buy a 10-string, but your Agile looks pretty awesome!
Might as well just be a harp player kek
i actually like the idea of having a setup where you cannot hear the upper strings. For when you want to play only the 7 or 8-string version and want to eliminate noise from the unused strings. Like you can turn off single strings on a Line6 Shuriken, which is weird, but can be cool
As a proud owner of a chinese no name guitar myself, I can really relate to your video.
It ended up being my training guitar. I tested tons of different wireings, refretted it, painted it, tried out different bridges, string gauges, even drilled a hand grip into the body at one point. it's just a thing to mess with and get experience. And it's got some decent upgrades over the years. And if someday anything goes wrong, I won't be sad 😅
Sounds like you could have just built a guitar from scratch and gotten a better result at a cheaper price.
I was on the fence about watching this but when he set it on fire I said out loud to myself.... Oh I'm watching this. Your level of calm frustration. Your simple choice to bring it back instead of leaving it burnt in the trash earned my subscription. I'm clicking now.
I have some experience on burnt guitars (the burnt Solar is mine), so this 10-string monstrosity got out almost unscathed.
Damn, this video was great. You can really see the effort put into this! :) Great Job
Thanks!
My Ibanez GIO 7-string was looking very nervous while I was watching this.
The use of a coat hanger piece as the nut was brilliant, total mcgyver moment.
Nick! This video was awesome... you are impressive my dude! Very funny but you're also clearly a talented musician and amazing technician. It was so great seeing you the other night! I'll keep checking out your vids... you ROCK! (Is This is Mr. Wilson btw...)
If it hadn't been for a certain middle school teacher inspiring my love of filmmaking, I wouldn't be here (literally and figuratively) roasting terrible guitars! great to see you too!
those plug-in modelers could make an ukulele sound exactly like every other djent guitarist on youtube
good video idea 😂
it's not true, but it might sound cool
Really solid video. Honestly didn't sound too bad after you were done with it. You've gained a sub this day. Do more face cam. You have great camera presence, and a Great beard!
Thanks! This was a rare one that isn't mostly me talking to the camera
This thing has got to be a tuning nightmare. 26 inch scale? With a A0? No. Just no.
Even my 7 string is a 26.5 inch scale, and it's in standard tuning!
It should've been G#0, but the string was too floppy. I tried a little intonation and gave up lol
I managed to get it passable for one demo song, but it was still not good
@@NickLeonard , nah, I understand. Can't do a ton with a 26 inch scale and going that low. Good job though.
I have a 25 inch 8 string. I despise it. It sounds so stupid and floppy. I cannot imagine dealing with a 26 inch 10 string.
I thought you’d made a compensated nut (in the demo). I’ve done that paper trick on the wife’s bass, and it’s not a sad sack like that 10 string. The 11th slot may come in handy down the track; you got it playing great.
8 strings are mostly multi scale now. To get the proper tension on the strings, the high e must be shorter than the low string. So they make them multi scale with fanned frets to change the string lengths.
I like to mess up with cheap guitars, I admire your work! It takes a lot of willpower to make something like that at least playable. The nut can be glued from two bone or tusq nuts with sanded ends and the frets can be lightly sanded with something slightly resembling the neck radius. Great job!
Love that intro Riff!!!👍🤘 Killer
Dude this was cool as hell. I love this type of hack shit. Anyone can make a PRS sing but to get this thing to play.....priceless
You did an awesome job!
Great video, very therapeutic and entertaining.
now put a kahler on it >:)
Oblivion role-play? Instantly subbed!!
and this is why im opting for a 7 string
Imo 7 strings is the sweetspot for guitars rn, you can sound stupid heavy and still have the versatility of standard tuning without compromising on the quality of the guitar and not having to use your whole arm to reach the lower strings
ong bro you said it@@sorlak_12
Yes, 7 is plenty for me. I have a Schecter C-7 Diamond Series and an Ibanez RG7421.
I own one of the earlier Agile Pendulum 10 strings and I really don’t understand what it’s function is either haha. The low string in its “proper” tuning just sounds like wet distorted farts so I tune it and the next one up as B and have it tuned in drop double B. Hitting them together is quite intense. I rarely play it, often using my 8 string or bass vi instead and I feel like I got it as a novelty. But, at least it’s a functional , well made instrument. I applaud your effort to make this thing playable, but even as a 10 string owner, I don’t understand the point. But for some reason, I don’t want to sell it either.
9 string can be cool, but at that point I'd much rather play a super down tuned baritone!
watching your video wile finaly putting together a Squier that just got new jumbo stainless freets, enjoyed the crazy enterprise, but took hours and hours and hours... "this stupid proyect" sayed it that many times... good you finish yours, cheers!
I would like to buy it. Any links?
INCREDIBLE VIDEO
Straight fire 🔥
so the pickups were like a p bass where both pickups together make the full span of the strings but yet there is a 3 way switch so in the up position you would lose some strings as well in the down position
P bass pickups don't have so much overlap either, so not only is the switch a terrible idea, but also all the middle strings would be louder than the highest and lowest strings
what sort of signal do you send into a guitar through that input jack?
Also does this one have an output jack, so you could plug it into an amp or something?
I misspoke there, it's just a normal output jack!
The grounding issue could be that thing where the grounding wire is touching something that’s painted rather than metal
The ground was fine when all the strings were on
This makes me miss my Ibanez 9 string. Thanks!
Was with you up to the point where you called the output jack socket an input jack
I'm sorry
That trash container looks clean asf 😅😅
It's got a frankensrat charm to it. Sounds heavy to me, so you did a great job. That's some Six Million Dollar man, shit. 🤘🤘
This was correct but now i put a crap tone of work into it and i have alot of fun haha. But its terrible at first to say the least i use emg 909 as pickups now but of course it needed more than that ha.
Where can you even buy a set of strings for this?
I don't know. I used bass strings and an 8 string set
This could be used as a platform to make an affordable touch guitar(Chapman Stick,Warr guitar) it just seems like way too many problems
It would really need a full refret and leveling, maybe the triangular frets they use on a Chapman stick. For the price of the labor, you'd be better off spending the money on something actually playable!
How can I not think car wizard when I see that intro, matrix glitch
Coat hanger nut! My favorite 💓
Also, you have a lot of patience dude.
I can't see a pragmatic usage for a 10 string guitar because of it being very difficult to play. I thought a 10 string guitar would be tuned to how 10 of 12 strings would be tuned on a 12 string if you are going by standard guitar tuning but who knows. This takes me back to a bass guitar that looked similar to this and this one dude played the Super Mario theme on it.
There is a BC Rich 10 string that's like a 12 string, double courses on E ,A, D, G I think. A little more manageable than this!

Imagine buying this guitar and giving it to a local guitar luthier to fix, the horror, XD
You got this from Wish?!?! I mean, I'm a Luthier/Tech myself an got screwed over by a seller on eBay (I've got a few vids on my channel about it). Long story short, ended up gutting it, replacing everything with real parts lol oh yeah, I actually had to do a complete Fret Level Job cause all they did in the factory was install the damn frets. Guitar plays, sounds great now 🤘 great vid buddy, just subbed. Stop on by, we have similar channels.
1:57 that riff is nasty as fuck
I regret buying my 8. I couldnt begin to fathom a 10.
I love my 8, but one of the benefits of playing with this monster for a few days is now my 8 feels like a 6 string in comparison lol
I could never regret my 8. it’s been my favorite guitar to play ever.
8 strings are the best guitars ever.
I have three 8-strings, but I understand they aren't for everyone :)
lmao that opening
I ended up with stank face out of nowhere on the opening track.
and in the end, this was the true meaning of Christmas
Maybe I can finally play Van Halen Erruption
The oblivion music 😍
Use this if you only came to the video to hear the lowest string
Not tuned low enough
I have a agile 10 string whith a low c#
Didn't even know Wish sold guitars 😮
Why is there all the paper on the nut
Because some slots were a little too low and it's the fastest fix. It fits the quality of the guitar.
A better solution would be to add something underneath, but that's more work
all the saddles in a straight line 😂
A 3D printed cover over those pickups and no one will ever know
I would have just put new bass pickups in and had them running in series or parallel and instead of a pickup selector switch I would have gone with a three-way: 1) cap to ground for treble cut, 2) bypass, 3) cap in series for bass cut.
Brah i know the 8 can be a gateway drug, so ive swarn to go no lower infact i'm considering getting a 7 so i can have some closer to normal days.
I do love the 7, it's a good sweet spot, especially if you can get one with a lot ger scale length
Someone definitely took an old school desk and made a 10 string
I want one of these just because lol I wouldn't even destroy it.
That is pure ridiculousness!!! At that point you really ought to be playing a Stick or a touch guitar of some sort.
For real. If I were a bass player in a band with a 10 string, I would get pissed. Stepping all over his frequencies.
10 strings, it’s a whole band by itself!
I didn't bother to use an actual bass for the demo song. It's just another track of the 10 string going through a bass amp 😂
Damn, still not ok do burn that thing.
Some hungry kids could have played wicked djent riffs on that axe
I love my eight, a 10 for me would be what an 8 is for someone with regular hands
i wish i could contribute to how funny it apparently is how wrong that guitar is, but as a non-guitar-expert all i see is a cool guitar with lots of strings and you can play it well and the sound is great
fireproof lol
Lighter fluid. All it did was burn itself up. The guitar itself was never on fire. The only thing that affected that pile of crap was heat.
That guitar looks like it was crafted in a Chinese opium den.
Extended range and Blackmachine hype certainly isn’t healthy for the guitar environment
And what about 180 strings guitar.
1:10 nice drum set. Too bad this 🎸 🎸wasn’t a double neck.
That's not just a 6 string fingerboard. it may have started as one of the blanks that's used for one. That was made with the intent of making this abomination. look at the radius height at where the seam is.
If it was a radiused 6 string fingerboard, that would be truly hilarious!
The ten string is a worthy challenge. I want one. I've got four, five , six, seven, and twelve string electrics, but I don't have one of These. Not this one, though, it IS an abomination.
I'd go for 8, maybe 9. 10 is a challenge, and not a very comfortable one to play
The 200 bucks that you paid for it is a lot, but the entertainment value of this monstrosity is priceless! 🤣😂
In actually like the truss rod cover. 😅
even if it was a good one.. 10 string uterly useless. totaly impractical. not to mention thats what bass players are for.
I mostly agree, and I like playing bass, but if people like them and make cool music with em, go for it!
The reason why they seem kinda useless to me is that they're only used for the chugga chuggas. I mean if someone can utilize all the strings then it must be a very good thing for them. Must be a virtuoso tho, because it is more similar to a chapman stick than to a guitar.
@@NickLeonardAren't 10 string guitars really popular in flamenco and classical guitar? Can't fathom why a 10 string string non fanned, 26 scale electric guitar even exists.
@@Liminal.Headspace it exists because there's no competition for a 10 string guitar under $300 😂
This appears to be an AliExpress knockoff of a BlackMachine.
No BRAND ON THE HEADSTOCK? lol
This is some of the most haggard guitar work I’ve ever seen. Job well done
before i keep watching this i can tell this guitar has giving you issues by all the paper in nutt slots lol 🤣🤣ok finishing video
That was actually the solution to raise up the strings lol
I should've made a whole new nut, but I'd spent enough time on it 😂
Bro has a guitharp
when will they learn…. adding extra strings to normal short scale does little
They weren't going for tone, they had something else in mind 💰
best bang for buck. jackson js20something 7. w the rosewood board. good mod platform- 26.5 scale and very open to adjustment. about 150-200 bux. buy good pickups, hipshot bridge and decent cheap locking tuners….. still come out ahead…..unfortunately they are also being faked
I dont get all the hype about excessive strings on a guitar. The best music on a guitar comes from a six string. That would be a hassle to have 8-10 strings. On top of that, those guitars are so bulky.
Ok boomer
@@Louzahsol I'm glad I grew up in the 80s. So much better than the crappy 2000s.
@@TheRichie213 I grew up in the 90s. Nice try though.
@@Louzahsol The 80s were better. Early 90s were cool. By the late 90s things started to go downhill. By the early 2000s I was at a red light and everyone crossing the street had their head down texting. I knew then it was a totally different world. Then social media and smartphones. A bunch of zombies.
I also grew up in the 80s and you already had 7 string guitars. Trey azagthoth and Steve Vai used them.
C#1 slaps non-ironically.
It does. Now I want to tune my baritone to that. I've got it set up for D#/E, but next time I restring it, I'm thinking of going lower. Mick Gordon's DOOM soundtracks were done on a 9 string at that pitch
Who let you burn their guitar on their property
James burned it in his backyard, I was trying to bring it back to life
it's not as bad as you make it out to be. it's not a real 5 piece neck, but a least they used two truss rods. A pair of nut blanks side by side would have probably worked (bone, graphite, tusq, etc), or you could have cut one from brass bar stock. Looks like you decided to do what you could without spending any real money or serious time on the thing. You never did a proper level crown and polish, yet you complain it still has dead frets. Clearcoat the truss rod cover. Make a proper nut and use nut slotting files this time. Do a proper level crown and polish. Roll the fretboard edges. install dual quadrails in parallel. It will eliminate slug to string alignment issues. If pickups in parallel are not loud enough for you, get a real amp. If it's still not loud enough, add an on-board preamp. Set your neck alignment first, then align the pickups to the strings. Enlarge the neck screw holes and pocket as needed to allow enough wiggle room for proper neck alignment. With 6 neck bolts, it will definitely stay where you put it once you set the alignment correctly. The bridge work and shielding work you did is good. The buzz is most likely a bad bridge ground (not all strings grounded). Did you shield the cavity cover? Did you make sure the shielding on the cover contacts the shielding in the cavity? Did you solder a ground wire to the shielding in the cavity? Do the new pickups use shielded cables? If not, you'll want to shield those pickup cavities and wire routings too. Install a proper jack plate and jack (if you didn't already). Determine your target tuning for the guitar, then get on stringjoy.com and use their calculator to determine the correct string gauges - then cut your nut slots to match. At that point you'll have done about all you can short of custom parts like pickups. But as mentioned elsewhere in the comments, the scale length of the guitar limits its potential. It's more a "looks cool" type instrument as opposed to a "works well" type instrument. But it can still be made to look cool and work OK.
On the contrary, I think you just reinforced my point ;)
You are correct that I didn't want to invest a whole lot of time or money into it, I also didn't show every minute of what I did to it, but I'm happy to admit I didn't give it the treatment a real instrument would deserve. I did a good amount of fret leveling, but many weren't seated well and coming out, and I didn't want to go over and glue and clamp so many frets, so I ended up flattening many more than should be, but I did go over all with a crowning file and steel wool to polish, then oiled. It still may have never intonated properly without moving the bridge pieces around and refinishing if I wanted to make it look good. Proper pickups would be very expensive and I'd want to fill and re-route the cavity, then refinish. A better nut would've helped some, but there was so much work to be done, it would've taken too much time and I do have a job lol. I put probably 8 hours into this and that was to do a hack job.
@@NickLeonard Understandable, you threw a few hours at it, but it needed semi-major or major work (especially if you worried about esthetics). While in my mind the coolness factor of it would warrant proper repairs, I suppose in the long run the impracticality of it makes it not really worth it. Still, it would look cool hanging on the wall, and would be even cooler if it actually worked - such as it is, non-multiscale and all. So, what ever happened to the guitar?
@@normbarrows it's back with James for some another song, then we'll see...
This seems more like self-flagellation than anything else.
There’s only one good 10 string and that’s the BC Rich Bich 10
Send it back to James😂 lets see if he'll change his mind and make something out of it
I have it atm 😈
I loved how it sounded when your were playing 6-7 strings on it. When you shifted to the 8th it sounded decent. But, when you moved to strings 9 and 10, I see why you hated it. It sounds like shit at that point. Reasons why I don’t think it’s necessary to play a 9-10 string guitar when the only necessary amount of strings is 6-7 MAYBE 8
put a bass pickup on the neck, for science
The problem of this guitar is obviously the stupid pickup placement
The QC on this 'thing' is truly laughable - are you sure it's not a gibson ?
