Both looked great and too close to tell the difference on a NEC PA272W calibrated 2560x1440 monitor. Your example showed a big difference which has me wondering what your camera and Ninja V settings were?
T Hogan would love to see this comparison! I think Atomos auto-applies video range scale regardless of the actual range of the source. I’m not sure but there should be an HDMI Range setting that allows you to specify the range of input signal (Full or Video).
@@PTUsher I have the Ninja V set to HDMI Standard 2.0 and camera output set to C-Log Gamma, Canon Cinema Gamut. There is an HDMI HDR Auto setting that was off for my tests. I don't see any other HDMI settings that I can change.
T Hogan I’ve just read somewhere that you can’t change the input range with atomos, but that can’t be right. I would call them today and ask them about that (would be a deal breaker for me). Their support people may be able to give you advice on best practices too. I was all set to pull that trigger but think I’ll rent first to see if I like it.
I got to play with this camera at B&H and I loved it. For me it would be the perfect camera for what I do if I wasn't already invested in Sony A73 and lenses. I wouldn't switch now and take a loss, but I would have chosen the EOS R for sure if I was starting from the beginning. Both cameras have their strengths and weaknesses, but for me that native ND, flip screen and IQ are what I want in a camera. Sony has much better photo AF, Ey AF and a much better sensor for pulling shadows. Thanks for the video and I agree with your points!
Armando, I am a Canon shooter, I started with the T5i then my current main camera the 80D. I have been looking at the EOS R as my next camera, my jump to Full Frame...I Love the future-proofing to mirrorless, the adapter w/ built-in ND filters and I can use all my existing Canon L series glass. But the "pièce-de-résistance" was what I heard at min 8:20 that AH HAAAAAAAA moment....DONE I am sold....take my plastic....
Mine is arriving in the mail tomorrow! Super stoked especially with videos like this.. I shot with a C100 forever but it wasn't mine.. this will be my first camera purchase ever. This video helped me feel even better about it! Thanks!
Your timing is impeccable...I already own the EOS-R and the Ninja V literally arrives today, Lol. I was really wondering if the 10-bit from the Ninja V would improve the C-LOG look because I've noticed noise in the blacks at 8-bit. Your video is proof that it does and is extremely helpful. I watched it on a true 10bit C4k panel and could see the difference even over UA-cam compression. Keep up the great content, Thanks!
I have the exact same feeling as you by owning and using Sony A7 series camera. Specs and functions on Sony are just way ahead of other brands. But at the end of day, the most important thing is using the least amount of time and thoughts to get the best image quality and color out of a camera. Sony for sure is lacking big time in this area if you are shooting anything dealing with skin tones. I would say Sony is best at shooting landscape, architecture, etc which benefit most from the good DR. Skin tones on Sony is hit and miss for me. Not saying Sony A7 lineup is bad, but using for right tool for the right purpose and shoot is the key! I use Sony for real estate gig, and Canon for shooting people.
99% chance that it will never happen, but if canon released a firmware update that gave us 120p that would make this camera just about perfect in its category. And I’m already a happy owner of 2 of them but that would just put it over the top for me lol. Coming from a similar position as you where I shoot it alongside a c200 and c100mkii
Sam Lucas my opinion on why 1080p 120fps isn’t in this camera is because this is like an exact mirrorless version of the 5Div which shares the same lack of 1080p 120. And if it’s to be believed that the Canon RP is the mirrorless version of the 6Dii then it stands to reason that a mirrorless version of the 1DXii isn’t far away from existing... which means that it will contain 1080p 120fps. I’m hoping if it does in fact drop that the price will be $3,999 since it’s far less expensive to manufacture mirrorless cameras than DSLRs for camera companies (hence why the EOS R is a great deal cheaper than the 5DIV though they are essentially the same camera)
Fly Guy yeah, I definitely understand, from a product placement standpoint, why they excluded it. I’m just not happy about it 😂 I’m interested to see what their first “pro” offering is going to be. Canon is so notorious for protecting their cinema line that I’m nervous what they might do in their next hybrid body lol.
I noticed at 2:34 the C200 clip has noticeable aliasing (see right above the REGAL). What might be the cause of that? I know firsthand that the C200 has no issues with that problem, but there it is.
Thinking of switching from a7iii back to canon for the colours and the codec. I found that Sony colours do fall apart in the grade. So glad you mentioned this. Tipped the scales for me and will be switching after Christmas! 🙏🏻🤩🎥🎬
Glad to see some positive spin on the much maligned EOS R. Just like the M50, its a camera that does great for what it is and how you use it. As an owner of both I'm constantly surprised by just how easy to use it is and the incredible image quality it outputs. Its funny you mention that you don't end up recommending it to many people as I often do the same thing! I think a lot of people overplay how much they need to "upgrade" and I try to steer people into doing what works best for them. And I'm really hoping we get 1080p120 from Canon one of these days. Absolutely my biggest complaint with the EOS R.
Great video Armando. I’ve used an EOS R and really enjoyed using it so much, that I plan to buy one at some point later this year. While I love my Sony, after using it for 8-9 months, it’s not really for me.
Thanks for making this video. I own an EOS R and a C200, and as much as I love the C200 with its built-in ND filters and other features, it is heavy when built up compared to the EOS R. I am especially impressed by the difference between 10-bit and 8-bit color on the EOS R. That built-in ND filter version of the RF/EF adapter really looks like a useful device compared to the simple $99 adapter I already have.
TBH I almost can't use any other camera because of it. It's just too easy, rather than adjusting ISO or white balance, you just scroll a wheel and get perfect exposure every time.
Thanks for this Armando - great vid for C200 owners! I've had the Ninja V for a few months & can't wait to pair it with an EOS R. Need to ditch the A7iii first...Yes, that variable adapter is game changing! Would love to see a vid on grading C-Log, especially matching the C200 with the R. Keep up the awesome work. :)
When you said the video is sharper in 10 bit, is that both 1080p and 4k? Is it downsampling from a higher resolution when connected or something? Sounds intriguing regardless, with the rumors of an EOS Rm2 already being tested I may just snag one of these and start my lens building until the better more competitive iteration comes in 2020. Also damn that banding at 8:58 I guess this camera really does have an issue when doing photos and swinging the exposure around huh
Here in 2024 and this video has given new life to my EOS R which I have as a backup camera to my R5 and R6. There are a few things about the R6 I don't like and I think that option to record 10bit externally is great and judging by the footage you posted as reference, the quality looks great! My R6 might take the back sit for a bit.
Your point about the R’s single slot not being a big deal is especially valid when using the Ninja V. There’s your redundancy. Hope we get a C100 mkiii with uncropped 4k 60fps and 120 fps 1080. That would be perfect for me.
Love my EOS R - also purchased the drop in variable ND filter and the Atomos Ninja V a few weeks ago - completely agree - the 4K 10-bit 4.2.2 is fantastic ! 👍
@@jakekeele - With the Atomos Ninja V on and attached; the EOS R screen is blanked out in video mode - in photo mode the touch screen auto focus works just fine in mine
Solid points. I would argue that your identifying it as a "mini C200" is contingent on you already having a C200. I think folks really wanted the EOS R to be a viable full frame mirrorless primary camera, and without 4k60 or even 1080p60, it just isn't. Slow motion is overused AF on UA-cam, but it's also a pretty powerful tool when used strategically, and I'd much rather have it than not. I'd also argue that the limited internal color space is another knock--having 10-bit 4:2:2 on my GH5 means I can get away with just a nice 5" monitor rather than an external recorder to get 10 bit footage. Again, pinching a penny here or there without sacrificing too much quality really counts for smaller scale producers.
Ali Basri depends on what camera I'd be using, most likely it would be a C300 so it would be a similar situation. Gotta understand I'm invested in the EF Mount system. A big reason I like Canon is because there's tons of glass available. Sigma, Rokinon, Zeiss, etc all make EF Mount lenses. You then have a ton of cameras that also support EF lenses natively. Blackmagic, RED, Arri, Panasonic EVA1, etc so that's huge! If I had Sony I'd be forced to use EF Mount and be very limited.
Hmmm....almost 3 years later, would you opt for the R6 instead now? The R can shoot at 1080 60 FPS now, but the R6 can do 4K 60FPS. My biggest grumbles with the R...no 4K 60FPS, only digital stabilization and the 4K crop. Great content...subbed and liked!
The true answer to this particular problem is high quality N-Log to C-Log. You get 4K without crop, 1080p slow motion, and RAW output to Ninja V. The only problem is the lens deficit with no alternatives for things like the Sigma 18-35 1.8 and you cannot use F because of crazy clicking motors.
Please may you do a video on c-log, small touch ups you used to match the c200 whilst editing. Maybe also using the ninja too? Like in-depth look at this setup? Just received my eos r with 25-105mm lens today! One thing when I unboxed it is, I really felt the quality. Man do you realise why they are so sort after
Great stuff! Very interesting....I'm a c200 guy, but use the A7III for my smaller cam....I'd love to have a canon mirrorless, but waiting to see if they come out with one that has a few more enticing features than the R. You think that will happen this year?
Armando, have you tried shooting 720p at 120fps and upscaling it to 1080p via "detail preserving upscale" in After Effects? I wonder if it could be passable. Would love to see side by side footage compared to real 1080p at 120fps from a Canon C200 for example.
The 10-bit 422 and 400mb image is what made me choose the GH5 over the Sony. The image that comes straight out of camera is amazing in 10bit. Plus I used a channel mixer hacked to help me grade v-log. If I were to choose a full frame camera, it would be the S1 or EOS R. EOS R maybe because of the flip out screen. Not worried bout autofocus much because I manual focus.
Dude!!! What an epic video review. You actually just helped me make a decision for my upgrade path. I've been holding off on upgrading my 5D Mark III for, perhaps, the R6. I already own the Ninja V. This video was EXACTLY what I needed to make the decision to jump to the EOS R. It'll save me money and allow me to grow to the next level. Thank you!!
Digital Vizun 4K is overrated IMO. In tests, audiences can’t tell the difference, even on a cinema screen. Besides that the 4K on the R is not the best, some bad rolling shutter, whereas its 1080 is probably the best you can get...
Armando. Question for you. You know that EOS R gives CLog in 10Bit. With Ninja you have options to recording CLog 2 and CLog 3. Would this function? CLog3 has a better shadows range and more preferable to use, but I’m not sure if the camera output provides only CLog could I use the higher range of codec. Much appreciated.
This video has given me an 'aha' moment about why canon crop the 4k on the full frame cameras...because 4k full frame would make it 'better' than the cinema ones which have a 1.5 crop.
Armando, I was wondering. How do you find the internal 1080p footage compared to the 5D IV? Is it the same, or does it look better on the EOS R? Thanks.
Great video Armando! What is the straight HDMI cable that connects your C200 to your Ninja V? There are apparently several such cables that don't quite work for 4K, and the Atomos coiled cable doesn't have a great reputation. Thanks!
The issue I have with the GH5S is that it doesn't have useable AF. I can put the my EOS R on a gimbal and know I'm going to get amazing shots every time. On the GH5s I'll have to mount a follow focus and now you're adding more work and possibly require an additional person to film. You could argue that you prefer manual focus and I'd argue back that Canon integrates with DJI Ronin S, Zhiyun, Moza, etc and works naively to pull focus using their wheel without the need of a follow focus unit. These are the little things I talk about in my video that make using a Canon camera so much better in a real production shoot.
@@mondobytes The GH5/GH5S also work great with the DJI Ronin-S focus wheel (I haven't tried with other gimbals), but sure, point taken. The AF is the deal-breaker for you, which is totally reasonable. Thanks for the reply!
I had an R6. It was a hot mess. Genius, but full of gotchas. Just secured an R. It’s lovely. I have set it up so it is intuitive and instinctive to work with. I could never get with the logic of the R6, far too many randomised combinations to remember. I cut back the auto focus options to just face/eye tracking and spot focus. I flip between them with the touch bar, nice. Favourite Video settings are set to C1av so hitting record while shooting stills goes straight there. Easy. AF button set to re-centre focus. Cool. Star button turns off the screen. Handy. Focus point selector button set to zoom in 5x - so it’s zoom in shoot and playback, logical. Adapter ring to exposure compensation but might stick with the mode dial. Sweet. Drag to focus, brilliant! Don’t need a joystick. Its a really nice camera to handle. The photos are exquisite. Its my B cam for video. Almost all of the criticisms I have seen of the controls I have zero problem with.

Thanks!
Thanks Armando, I am looking forward to buying this baby C200 😄
Man...that ND adapter is freaking genius! Waiting for the next version of the EOSR
Seriously, it feels like I'm cheating lol.
what is his cinema lens ?
Your timing is impeccable...I already own the EOS-R and the Ninja V literally arrives today, Lol. I was really wondering if the 10-bit from the Ninja V would improve the C-LOG look because I've noticed noise in the blacks at 8-bit. Your video is proof that it does and is extremely helpful. I watched it on a true 10bit C4k panel and could see the difference even over UA-cam compression. Keep up the great content, Thanks!
M. Lee you're going to love the Ninja V, it really transforms this camera.
The EOS R is severely underrated
I’m just not happy about it 😂
I’m interested to see what their first “pro” offering is going to be. Canon is so notorious for protecting their cinema line that I’m nervous what they might do in their next hybrid body lol.
Good advice Armando I use the same set-up EOS-R and the Canon C200 perfect match, everything you said I can pretty much go along with.
Sam Holland you can pick up an EOS R for $1300 new right now
Armando Ferreira Say whaaaaaaaaat?!?! 😍🎥 I’m going shopping!
Great video Armando! I totally agree that the EOS R experience and video is sooo much better than the quality of experience and video with others.
What is the wide lens that you're using on this camera?
Impressive! Got the R and Ninja V yesterday! Can’t wait🤩🤩

@@mondobytes - Thank you! I saw this a few weeks ago, and I was really impressed. About half of my shooting is of actors on sets.
That filter between the lens and the body kinda makes me wish I bought an eos-r instead of the A7III...
squeezybits using old lenses because canon dont have native glass....
@@lopescorte104selection of glass ultimately pushed my decision. As well as how much of a low light monster the A7III is.
TBH I almost can't use any other camera because of it. It's just too easy, rather than adjusting ISO or white balance, you just scroll a wheel and get perfect exposure every time.
@@mondobytes I should've closed my eyes at that comment...My GAS is building up ..
I think there is similar EF to e mount with nd filer adapter
Thanks for this Armando - great vid for C200 owners! I've had the Ninja V for a few months & can't wait to pair it with an EOS R. Need to ditch the A7iii first...Yes, that variable adapter is game changing! Would love to see a vid on grading C-Log, especially matching the C200 with the R. Keep up the awesome work. :)
would love to see a comparison between the canon eos R and the Sony 7RIII make a video of it, thanks
I have been on the fence for awhile now... thanks for pushing me into buying one!
Where can I download the official lut for EOS R? Or any suggestions? Please.
From Canon
I love that filming look {greenish} that the Lut has, it gives a awesome look and deep touch to your videos, look so clean,
Can you not record 120p at 1080 through the Atomos Ninja V? If so, doesn't that answer your need for slow motion?
When you said the video is sharper in 10 bit, is that both 1080p and 4k? Is it downsampling from a higher resolution when connected or something? Sounds intriguing regardless, with the rumors of an EOS Rm2 already being tested I may just snag one of these and start my lens building until the better more competitive iteration comes in 2020.
Also damn that banding at 8:58 I guess this camera really does have an issue when doing photos and swinging the exposure around huh
Can you record video internally and externally to the Ninja V at the same time?
Fast forward one year...EOS R or Nikon Z6? I'm into filming weddings, documentaries, travel film etc... Is there any other camera you would recommend?
Here in 2024 and this video has given new life to my EOS R which I have as a backup camera to my R5 and R6. There are a few things about the R6 I don't like and I think that option to record 10bit externally is great and judging by the footage you posted as reference, the quality looks great! My R6 might take the back sit for a bit.
Great video man. I didn’t know about that manual focus feature. That’s super cool!
Your point about the R’s single slot not being a big deal is especially valid when using the Ninja V. There’s your redundancy.
Hope we get a C100 mkiii with uncropped 4k 60fps and 120 fps 1080. That would be perfect for me.
This is a very well done review of the EOS R. Plenty of detail and ACTUAL user experience noted throughout.
How about a C100 vs EOS R comparison, since the C100 and EOS R are in about the same price range.
Great video Armando!!
Thanks man!
Just watched this and totally agree! I really do love the EOS R....can't wait for IBIS though! :)
Will Canon release new decently priced Eos R series with IBIS? Any idea?
Hey Armando , Potato Jet is at home with his feet up saying to himself “I told you” . Lol . Another cool, informative video bro thanks.
Love my EOS R - also purchased the drop in variable ND filter and the Atomos Ninja V a few weeks ago - completely agree - the 4K 10-bit 4.2.2 is fantastic ! 👍
Ajushi Photography did your EOS R lose touch screen autofocus for video after you added the Atamos Ninja V?
@@jakekeele - With the Atomos Ninja V on and attached; the EOS R screen is blanked out in video mode - in photo mode the touch screen auto focus works just fine in mine
MOVINPICS VIDEOGRAPHY - sure does - works just fine - examples on my channel since all of my videos are recorded on the Atomos
How many frames delay do you set on the Ninja V with EOS R with regards to the audio input?
do you have a link to the HDMI cord?
Is there a vibration inhibitor in the walls and bores of electronic granules Is suitable for portrait photography ?
What is the lens u use on these clips with eos r?
A very fair presentation. The question I’m left with is: if you didn’t own a c200 would you still choose the R over say the A7iii?
Which settings on the c200 & eos r do you pick for the perfect match? RAW or MP4 on the c200, if mp4 which settings? Eos R Clog which color matrix?
Please may you do a video on c-log, small touch ups you used to match the c200 whilst editing. Maybe also using the ninja too? Like in-depth look at this setup? Just received my eos r with 25-105mm lens today! One thing when I unboxed it is, I really felt the quality. Man do you realise why they are so sort after
Great stuff! Very interesting....I'm a c200 guy, but use the A7III for my smaller cam....I'd love to have a canon mirrorless, but waiting to see if they come out with one that has a few more enticing features than the R. You think that will happen this year?
No, probably next year
Nelson Dellis I think it will happen at the end of this year.
Armando, my EOS R doesnt work with my Rokinon cine lenses....What should I do?
Woah! It's crazy how close they are! Great video Armando!!
Thank you!!
Incredibly stuck on choosing the EOS R or the GH5 for video...
Great video Armando 99% agree with you ..Would you recommend C100 Mark ii over eos r for weddings?
Is there any quality difference between internal and external on ninja v when recording in 1080p clog 8bit?
Also interested to find out this answer.... planning to get the R to record 1080 60p, but will the Ninja V give a noticable quality boost?
No significant difference to 1080. The ninja is aimed more at getting the benefit of 10 bit out of 4K footage
@@PTUsher Thanks for the info. I may hold off for a bit as I currently don't have the hardware to edit 4k yet. Thanks again.
Digital Vizun 4K is overrated IMO. In tests, audiences can’t tell the difference, even on a cinema screen. Besides that the 4K on the R is not the best, some bad rolling shutter, whereas its 1080 is probably the best you can get...
@@PTUsher Thanks for the concise information. Wish Canon would also give 10bit in 1080p for external recording.
What is the lens you’re attaching to the camera, it looks very nice
Do you think it works as well with the Blackmagic Video Assist 4K instead of the Atomos Ninja?
So its crop in 4k is like equal to APSC sensor ?
This video has given me an 'aha' moment about why canon crop the 4k on the full frame cameras...because 4k full frame would make it 'better' than the cinema ones which have a 1.5 crop.
Armando what about the Canon M50 vs Canon EOS R P
Both great cameras, just not cameras that I'd buy for me.
Thanks!
I would love to hear your opinion on a GH5S + speedbooster combo since with the EOS R, you're both adapting EF lenses and foregoing IBIS anyway.
Love it! Was going to just upgrade from the 6D Mark II, but you convinced me to get the Ninja V as well. Used your B&H link so hopefully you get a nice kickback! Super excited for it to get here!
What lens did you use
With the Atomos, does it allow for 4K 60fps??
This is a great video, that C200 looked remarkable when you first started showing it. I like how you did the contrast and saturation to mimick it. The C200 was more 3D it seemed like to me though. I'm looking at buying the R
Holy shit you filmed at the pike! Two of my friends work down there, and you even got a shot of one of the boats they work on! I don’t know why that excites me, but it did
Alec Wry that's awesome!
EOS R have a new update recently can you make a video about that
Hi and thank you for a nice review. Watching it in 2021 - does it make any difference when shooting 1080p into the recorder? Or is the difference just 4K? Thank you...
Using the native battery of ninja V and eos R, how long can each battery last? Asking for shooting interview purposes, let’s say 1080P 25P or 30P 420
