The biggest thing keeping me glued to my Fuji kit is my left eye dominance.
I've always used the X-Pro, X-E and X100 lines because of the off center viewfinder.
When I tried the X-T2 I felt like my hands were smushed because of how close the viewfinder was to the right side of the camera, and that's inherent to any SLR style body.
The guy who actually shot my engagement is a friend of mine, and he let me play around with the EOS-R raw files and I can attest, the image quality is fantastic.
I'm a strong believer that any modern kit is fantastic image quality-wise and ergonomics should determine the camera you shoot with but at the same time I'm a realist. I know that physics is physics, and an APS-C sensor is never going to match the image quality of full-frame. For what I do though, I feel like Fuji is still the right balance of image quality vs size vs price.
I agree with you on the grip on Fuji Cameras, and I wouldn't even consider using any of my camera without a thumb grip on it. That was a game changer.
I love my Fuji gear, but not in a tribal way. It just happens to be the right combination of assets for my needs, even if I'm aware of all of its shortcomings.
I've already accepted the inevitability that someday I'm going to auction off a few of my organs to by a digital Leica M though.

I really enjoyed your review on the EOS R. I have owned mine since about a month after it came out and I was very hesitant to buy after the reviews that were out on it. I started with Canon all the way back in the 80's. I had a 5D Mark 4 and kept it until I was sure I would like the EOS R. After about 6 weeks, I tried using my 5D4 and I just didn't like it anymore compared to the EOS R. So sold it and absolutely love my EOS R.

@@michaels8597Don't agree . If they have it as loner for a longer period and use it enough, do the ins and outs, and like here , even dare to use it for their work, that is good for me and of course that they are not affiliated to the brand (and participated in BBQ and Company parties , benefits that they probably loose when they speak the truth ) . The problem with reviews from people who own the gear is that if they don't like it, they should probably admit they made the wrong choice and people are not so into doing that.

No one has to agree because the fact is,we all have 14-30 days to take the gear through it's paces and take it right back to the store. We can also rent, and do the same thing, yet the thing is,you have to be familiar enough to make an intelligent accessment.
For example, I spoke to this moron days ago,who told me that Sony didnt meet expectations with the A9/9ii upgrade.Like I told him, unless Sony themselves made documented promises, anyone's expectations are purely personal.I told him that just because a new version of a camera comes out, that doesnt mean they needed to make a new sensor.I told him that if he personally doesnt need what the A9/A9ii contributes,it has nothing to do with him anyway.
Of course,as I already figured he never even owned the original A9 to even have a reference point, and he was unable to back up his statements about 'expectations' with any evidence.See,only a small percentage of shooters even make a living shooting on a professional level,as in NBA/NFL,Apple,Cosmo,or even celebrity events.
The rest of us just buy what we enjoy and can make a bit of money with.I dont care what anyone's connections are,as long as they are not outright lying about gear, which is easy to check.Like you said, for example with the Z6/7,you have these people who bought it,and then babble about workarounds, because as you said, they refuse to admit they didnt get what they thought the camera was about. They defend the 1 card slot, the poor AF,and they even defend the 2 recalls, never wanting to admit they paid for a $3000 miss.

@@michaels8597 Agreed 100% with your latest statement, my point was that one does not have to own a camera to do a review, bit sense about what and where it is all about is welcome though. And indeed some use them 3 days and jibber jabber a lot of BS that is not much more than reading the user manual added with some info from the tech sheets. But being around on YT for a while, you know the BS guys from the real deal. Still follow some of the BS guys just for laugh and rattling the cage with some serious comments on their wrong believes ;-)

Great comprehensive review and consistent with my experience with the camera. A few thoughts:
The "screen" that covers the sensor is actually the shutter. I love that function, but critics do point out that it may make the shutter susceptible to damage.
On the "touch bar" I've set it for: Swipe - AF mode, Left tap - eye detect on/off, Right tap - histogram on/off. No complaints. I'm not sure why it gives people the grumps.
I'm right-handed, but a left-eyed shooter. Even so, my nose on the screen has not been a problem for me. I suppose in part I apparently have a suitably-sized nose. :-) I also wear glasses, so that likely keeps my face a bit further back.

I just purchased the EOS R + RF 24-105 L for $2200 NEW. Just couldn't pass up the deal. Every time I picked up the camera in Best Buy I never wanted to put it down. It has been the only camera that made me consider replacing my Olympus E-M1 MKII setup (12-40 and 40-150 PRO). I picked up the Sony A7 III with the 24-105 F4 G and used it for nearly a month. Never felt inspired when using it and didn't feel it offered me anything better over my Oly for my use case (ISO performance was definitely better). I have a good feeling about the R though. Can't wait.

I picked up an EOS R with the battery grip & basic EF lens adapter awhile back & use my EF lenses rather than immediately investing in RF glass. I've also adapted my Leica lenses, FD lenses & even T & M42 mount lenses for the EOS R. I still have the XT-2 I bought from you and shoot with it on a regular basis, but being a long term Canon shooter I tend to gravitate back to the Canon. The EOS R was an upgrade for my 5D Mk III (I still have it) which is why I hesitate to upgrade my lenses to the RF line. Everything I've shot with the EOS R has really impressed me! My only complaint about the EOS R is that stupid touch bar on back. I'd much rather have a joystick than the bar. In fact, I've disabled all functions on the touch bar. Glad to hear you like the EOS R since you've never really used Canon before. I switched from Nikon to Canon way back in the 1980's and I've been happy with them ever since even though I really enjoyed shooting with Nikon as well. Cameras are ultimately just tools we use to accomplish our photographic vision. We shouldn't get too hung up on what's newest or has the best specs. Just get out and shoot 100-200 images a week and you'll master whatever you've got. Great video!

I'm also very interested in the next one, Canon might get some of my money if they do it right. I currently shoot with a 7D MkII, if the EOS-R Mk II has 10fps with good AF then I'll happily change, if they don't then they are risking more Canon shooters switching to Sony. I like Canon and have be using them since I bought my 10D in 2003, I'd prefer to stick with them if they can deliver.

I have been using the Canon R for about 6 months now. I have shot over 10 weddings with it, events, portrait sessions and pretty much everything else. Along with that, I have done a ton of videos too. I ended up getting the ND adapter and it allows quick switching between photos and videos. I have had absolutely no problems with it. I even got the budget RP as my secondary camera, which in all honesty is almost on the same level, minus some things here and there. It feels just as great in the hand as the R. Anyway, just my two cents.

@@MeAndMyOpinions_OverYours It depends on your budget too. Obviously go with the R if you have the cash, but don't discount the RP as a secondary body. Awesome, welcome to the EOS R life. In my opinion it's easily the best photography camera on the market. There is just something special about how that RF mount catches light from the lens. Images have bit of a lifelike 3D feel to them. It's hard to explain but once you notice it you can't un-notice it. I'll give you a few tips on shooting with the EOS R. In my experience Canon and Lexar don't always play nice. If a card is going to fail in a Canon camera it's most likely going to be a Lexar. Not sure why that is but I stick to sandisk and never had an issue. Also for your vlogging check out Canon's EFS 10-18mm. It's designed for APC-C sensors but with the adapter that comes with the EOS R you can use it on your camera. Because it's designed for a crop sensor it works perfectly with the EOS R's 4k crop video. Plus it has in lens image stabilization and a plastic build so it can be used handheld and you'll never get a tired arm holding it up. I'll be making a review of it on my channel soon. Hope that helps. Cheers.

This is a totally great review. First review I have seen Matt do. Matt is a real wedding photographer pro. and he gives a realistic assessment of the good and bad of the EOS R with RF24-105mmf4 and the RF50f1.2 lenses in his usages. He loves the camera and lenses despite no dual flash cards and IBIS. He left the Fuji which he loved but simply loves the EOS R more and has no intention of going back. He was surprised by how useful the flipout screen was and how long the battery life was in comparison to his prior Fujis. Not you typical review and I am going to have to tune some of the the video Matt has done.

Dude, thank you for the honest review. Very informative, in regards to the things you can’t just read on a spec sheet. Canon really seems to be going in an awesome direction, especially considering this is their first serious mirrorless offering, and it’s already this good. It’s an exciting time to be a photographer! I’d love to try one out for myself sometime.

Nice review Matt. I have been a long time Canon film and DSLR user but like you I also turned to Fuji for mirrorless and shot with the Xpro-2 and lots of really good Fuji glass. However, I always missed the Canon colour rendition and I purchased my EosR a few weeks after seeing it at Photokina last year. I have loved using it and it is now my goto camera for just about everything and I have new reluctantly sold all my Fuji gear. My only non Canon digital camera now is my Olympus Pen-F which I use for street photography. Keep up the good work and if you're ever in Scotland look me up.

I feel exactly the same way about my EOS R, it's just such a joy to use! Gives me the same excited feeling I remember from using the original 5D back in the day. I was very apprehensive about switching to mirrorless and still use DSLRs too, but I'm so happy I decided to go for the EOS R as my main camera.

yes it worth it... always using canon and I love EOS R ... you need to know what you want. Some are happy with a phone camera some with film camera some without. However I would never change all of my cameras to a completely different brand ... that was a bit careless in my opinion ... I would recommend to rent one for the weekend to try it out first.

I really love the touch bar now. I set it to change between two af modes. Right now I have face+eye tracking swiping over to single point af and right tap mapped to change the singe point af size. This works great with Backlit portraits where eye af wont find the face or eye. Swipe instantly over to single point and get the shot without fumbling around. Also mapped the lock button to only lock the touch pad.

I'm in exactly the same boat: all Fuji gear right now, but wanting to go full frame. I was a Nikon film shooter, I've used the Z6, and was thinking of going that way, but your review, and that of (highly opinionated) Ken Rockwell--who emailed me to recommend Canon glass over Nikon--has convinced me. Now, it being June 2020, I may hold off the R for the R6, doubt I can afford the R5, but...definitely putting the (much loved) Fuji gear out for sale. I guess the big downside is that for travel, the smaller Fuji body and glass...hmmm. Great review, thank you.

I had a similar experience moving crop crop sensor (Nikon D5200) to full frame (Sony A7ii). The images are so much cleaner and more detailed. I am moving over to a EOS R MKii as soon as it comes out. The new Canon RF glass, great EF compatibility, flip out screen, and color accuracy set it apart from Sony in a way that I can't ignore. Only a few of the new Sony bodies have decent color reproduction and Sony lenses are too expensive for the price since they are not that much better than EF glass and cost the same as RF glass.

I sold my 6D 24-105 and tamron 15-30 for a used r with rf 24-105 l for a really low price. It's taking a moment to customize and become familiar with, but it's also growing on me a lot.One thing with the RF 24-105 and the back cap for the lens, theres less tactile information for either lining up the cap on the lens or lining up the lens with the body, I take a lot of night photos so it matters if I can change a lens by feel.

Don't be apologetic for changing brands. What works for you is what works for you. I've shot Canon full-frame and the difference wasn't worth the cost, size, and weight over my Fuji cameras, but that was me. I am not making enough money with my camera to justify $20K to replace my current gear with all new Canon gear. I was just looking at the 24-70 f/2.8 R lens and it is $3000.00. The 16-55 f/2.8 equivalent in Fuji is $1000.

They nailed the ergonomics and the glass is top shelf- no doubt. In comparisons I've seen though for portraits I still would give Fuji the nod for overall rendering if not absolute sharpness going to Canon..if you're using their best glass.
I'm leaning more toward Nikon though. Their 50mm 1.2 will be 2020 and they've already rounded out an amazing 1.8 selection of lenses not to mention the class leading 24-70mm 2.8 S.
You really can't go wrong with any of these systems. Nice to see the EOS R is working out for you.

9:30 and 12:22 The hilarious 1.8x crop in 4K, and the missing IBIS were a deal breaker to me, after I used the camera for a couple of months. One of my favorite lenses is the excellent Canon TS-E 17mm/f4L and this camera doesn't support it fully. Weirdly, Sony A7 and even Nikon Z6/Z7 cameras are much more fine for this Canon tilt-shift lens. I wonder, when Canon is willing to make a FF camera with IBIS and without a crazy 4K crop?

  • @AdityaMukherjee11
    @AdityaMukherjee11 5 років тому

I agree with everything you said except the shutter coming down on opening the lens part. Actually the shutter mechanism is much less robust than the hermetically sealed sensor. I mean cleaning a sensor is no big deal. But even if a large speck of dust falls on the shutter blades, they might bend and stop working. And that would be a costly replacement.

  • @angelllacuna8889

Does the Canon R keep separate configurations for video and photography so we don`t need to reset the settings when switching between the 2 shooting modes?
This involves basically the settings for ISO, aperture and shutter speed

I think a lot of what we do is nitpicking. We live in a great time with such advanced cameras. I picked up a 90D because I like the ergonomics of a canon dslr. Size is not an issue but there are great benefits to a ML. My next camera will be a ML and by then it’ll be a no brainer to get one.

I also begun with Fuji cameras. But after downloading and playing around with raw images from an EOS R camera with RF lenses I was sold. The images from EOS R with RF (also EF) lenses are better than then Fuji. And the eco system for lenses are far better. You have more, less expensive and better lenses to choose from when shooting Canon. I sold most of my Fuji stuff, but kept my XT30 with my favorite lenses.

It´s a different beast even compared to Canon 5D MKIV with all the features and it takes som work to get used to. Fantastic customizations possibilities close to GH5. Interesting to hear your views on the Fuji. Sorry for complaining but is it possible not have that flashing frames at the transitions, just hard mentally to have it flashing. Great work, keep it up : )

I’ve only tried a Canon mirrorless for a week, but honestly, it was the most fun I had with photography in a while. I tried out the M50, and after using a really old 20D for many years, it was an astounding experience. Very nice touch screen, adapted my EF and EFS lenses with no quirkiness, and the files are miles above what I’ve used previously.
Would love to get one of the full frame mirrorless, but they’re out of my budget unfortunately.
Still, I see this as a very nice review overall. I think a lot of people look into specs a lil too much, when personally, you should grab the camera that feels the most ergonomic for you. Personally for me, it just happens to be Canon mirrorless.

I think you hit the nail on the head about usability and fun. I know on paper the A7's might be "better" but I picked them up and tried them and they didn't feel "fun" or "quality". That day to day experience, to me, means more than the POSSIBILITY that one day I will need that 1/2 extra stop of dynamic range, or the extra width the rare times I shoot 4K video. I wish it had the best of all worlds, and I expect that is coming in the next version, however, much like the RF lenses, the price I suspect will be out of my range.

Another great thing about Canon (for me at least) is that if you're used to shooting 6x4.5 film and/or don't like 3:2 in portrait orientation, you can shoot in 4:3 aspect ratio in camera without needing to crop afterward. I love this feature - combined with a 50mm f/1.2 it looks so much like 645 120!
