It's pronounced Old Pultney, the first e is silent. Take it from a Scot who was born in the Malt Whisky Capital of the World, Dufftown. My late father was born in Rothes and Old Pulteney was his favourite Malt Whisky. He worked at Cardhu and Littlemill distilleries in the 1950's and 1960's.
I'm not a stickler for pronunciation but geez Pul-tay-nee hurts my ears. Love the 17 (multiple bottles), and finally got the 21 two months ago. Haven't opened it. Charley, that's a beautiful bottle to give to people who can't pronounce it. LOL Congrats on 10K subscribers that's cray-ay-zee.
Y'all can insist on pronouncing things however y'all want. But I'll insist on my ability to turn to Ralfy's channel to learn proper pronunciation of Scotch brands.
I'm glad you guys liked it so much! This whiskey is near and dear to my heart and is the first scotch I ever fell in love with. My grandpa always had multiple bottles at the house and he turned me onto it years ago. Prob the only time I've ever agreed with Jim Murray's Whiskey of the Year too. It really is amazing and very complex once you get into it. The 17yo is also damn good. There's actually a cool story my grandpa used to tell about a family member of ours who used to work at the distillery in the late 1800s. He was a sailor on a boat that delivered barley and the distillery always sent them off with a barrel of some their best stuff when they left. He became such a fan that one day he got off the boat and never got back on. As Daniel said, it's the most northern distillery on the mainland and pretty remote, especially back then. So, he stayed in the area, ended up getting a job at Old Pulteney and worked there for close to 30 years until he died. Now that's a man who loved his whisky!
Yes!! Old Pulteney 12. This one holds a great place in my heart as it was a gift from my girlfriend's (now wife) granddad. It was a very nice acceptance gift into the family. Always have a bottle on my shelf now for when he comes over. Top bloke! Haven't even watched the video yet. Maybe I wont just in case you don't like it.
Watched! Love Old Pulteney! Must get a bottle of the 21. Can have a dram with my Grandfather in-law when he visits. And Rex, I bet you have socks older than 23.
Just like Daniel says, "I wish I had stumbled onto this one sooner." I am enjoying my first bottle of the OP12 and it is a briney green apple Jolly Rancher. This is a very fine scotch for the price point. In Texas 2023, I paid $47 for a gift box containing the bottle and 2 glasses. This is a whisky that I WILL be recommending to friends. Slainte
I was in Scotland for only two days and tried to taste as much whisky as possible without leaving Edinburgh. Old Pulteney was the best one I tried and it’s still my favorite. On my 21st birthday my friends got together to buy me a glass of the 21 year and it was wonderful. I thought the flavor was similar but it was so smooth.
Awesome! This Old Pulteney 12 yo is my favorite totally affordable Single Malt. At the (not so far away) New Hampshire liquor store this 12 yo is $36.99 Considering the low price, this bottle is amazing.
What I enjoy so much about your reviews is that it's like drinking whiskey with your best friends. Unlike other whiskey review channels where it's all about the nose, the taste, the finish which is fine because they're very informative but to me not that much fun to watch. You two on the other hand make the experience so much more enjoyable, all the banter and shit talking make it feel like I'm sitting there with you guys enjoying a wonderful glass whiskey. Keep up the good work!
Watching this whilst listening to Physical Graffiti (if you don't know who by then you're dead to me), drinking an Italian beer. Before I make myself a steak (medium rare) dinner. I don't like people dissing the Mooch (3:37). Dude, wear a dressing gown, drink a whisky and say, "The Mooch abides." - The Big Rexbowski. And now my toast is being used at weddings... How growith my Ego! 10k!!!!! CONGRATS guys... and Chad
Old Pulteney is on my to acquire list. Last night I opened Ledaig 10yr. From Tobermory, the single distillery on the isle of Mull. Now this smokie. And very interesting! At $42 NY ( we spend for our sin ).....I believe I've found a nice everyday peat pour. I'll take it Friday Night to my son's birthday party, to be reviewed by the mooches.....( Joe! Your dad's so cool...he brought scotch!! )
OP 21 is one of my top favorites. I have 2 bottles, will probably pick up 1-2 more since it is now Discontinued. The 17 is Discontinued as well. We should see a supply through the beginning of 2018 though, from what I read. They are not going away from age statements, so most likely will see other age statement to replace them. Nice review.
Hey guys, congrats on 10k subscribers. I hope you are weathering the storm well. Now that I have the pleasantries out of the way, I need to speak to Rex. I'm bringing it. I'm bringing it all the way down to Texas, and baring any unforeseen problems, to the sommelier class. I look forward to meeting you in person.
Add another one to the list. I really wanted to try this one after Ralfy gave this one of his recommended beginner whiskys, but I always keep finding other things to try and or collect, and I haven't found my way to this one yet. After this glowing review, I might just pull the whisky trigger and buy a bottle. Also, enjoying the nautical theme'd puns
I'm glad you put our minds at ease with the emergency plans for the whiskey. Priorities. Although I suspect being up on the 7th or whatever floor affords some protection.
After sipping on a bottle of Laphroaig and Highland Park as well as Ardmore on and off for the past few months, I think I cant do "friendly" anymore. Especially since I prefer the Laphroaig over the Highland peats. I bought OP12 today as well as Evan Williams BiB. And while its a great whisky and I love the brine notes in OP 12, Id prefer them to be stronger, more robust. Id rather sip the EW.
4:25 Rex gets censored at the same time Daniel opens the bottle, and I had to watch a couple times to determine weather it was a censor or the actual bottle noise.
Drinking OP12 right now, and sporting quite the chub myself! This is hands-down the best sub-$40 single malt you will ever taste! If you haven’t tried it, you are missing out…
I just bought this one, smelled smooth but not too special to be honest. Then I took a sip and wow, this is a very very good whisky. Very sweet flavor! Vanille, butterscotch and lots of amaretto it seems like.
Opened my newest bottle to play along. This is one I keep around for the unique profile and pricepoint. I get salty bubblegum and a late hint of smoke. The 17yo is good also but 3 times the price so...and the commenter may have been talking about your original toast: May your crazy stay this side of legal and may you return before we have time to miss you. I like that one better anyway.
Every time i get my hands on the Old Pulteney 12 i pour myself a glass and I come back to this video just to see you guys reveiw the 12 which you do so well this video
I was making udon noodles with miso soup last night, I was putting the miso paste in bowl and I tasted a bit and thought that reminds me of a whisky. I think it might have been Talisker 10, it had that seaweedy salty briney thing and the funky Unami taste was not unlike a malt taste. I thought it was a very odd place to have that old factory sense call back to a whisky I had a few months ago.
Rex You're bound to have had it, it's a Japanese staple. It's actually makes perfect sense that it should have whisky tasting notes. It's primarily made with fermented soya beans, barley or rice. (Malty, Unami, alcohol funk) with dashi, which is a stock made primarily of bonito which is dried smoked tuna shavings. (Smokey salty briney) and it's served with bits seaweed such as nori or kelp. I think it's particularly the seaweed which reminded me of talisker 10. One of the tasting notes is described like the sensation of standing on a rocky seaweed covered beach which I totally got. It's was itsu original miso soup I had if you can get your hands on it.
Congratulations you hit 10K subs! now i think its time to do a Macallan M review and a bottle down ceremony on it just for Rex with a fan blowing his hear so he can be famous. make sure to wear like 12 scarfs Rex!
The hurricane comment was funny because I am currently getting the front of a (expected) 4 day storm front here in Oklahoma. My office went from sunny to dark in under 5 minutes. The video is almost two years old, just a funny coincidence.
Effervescent? For anyone else who is wondering (as I pause the video to expand my vocabulary via google..) "Something effervescent has bubbles or froth, like a sparkling wine, a bubble bath, or Old Pulteney 12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky on Rex' Master Level Mooch pallet" according to Urban Dictionary
A favorite go to of mine. Have not tried the 21. But the 12 is a cheaper Scotch in my area. One which I could and have drank daily. Cheers from Canada.
I love these videos, i have watched half of all the videos in the past four days. I love learning about so many variations of whisky, and i would love to see a review of something totally different. Kyro distillery from Finland just this year released their first whisky, Juuro. It seems Finland is very new to producing Whisky, so i would like to see how it is. The only other Finnish Whisky i could find is Teerenpeli whisky at about 2-3 times the price of the Juuro, but they are not 100% rye.
A little bit more on the history of this distillery, my mother's maiden name is Henderson and this distillery was founded by my ancestors :) #freescotchmaybe?. The Henderson's group/clan just went on a trip over to Scotland this month and presented them with a Henderson plaque assuming for their fine service for making fantastic Whisky! Anyway, Daniel, just thought you being more of a history buff might enjoy this info where as Rex.... Well lets be honest, he's a mooch and could care less ;). Keep up the fine work gentlemen!
I had to make a toast at a wedding once, but I wasn't asked till right after the ceremony. Naturally I had to BS my way through it. 2 things helped me greatly, one was that I was the 4th and final toast, father of the bride, father of the groom, sister of the bride, and then my dumbass. The other is that the grooms father picked up a bottle of macallan 12 to toast with. I don't remember all I said, but there were people both laughing and crying by the end of it. It either went really well or extremely poorly. I tell myself it was a fantastic speech though...
Drink this while eating salty food.....it becomes sweet like dessert. Although I prefer a little more peat in my whisky, this is an all around great Scotch for the money.
My respect has grown tenfold for you bastards!!!! Old Puteney is the milk of paradise!!! The twelve is the best value on the market IF you can find it. Bravo 👏🏼
Just this week I found out that there's a smoked version of monkey shoulder. I can't find it around me (yet). Hopefully you guys can get it or someone willing to send one in. Im curious if it's a good intro to smoky whisky just as regular monkey shoulder is a good beginner whisky
As a new explorer in the whisky world i got in to whisky just buy admiaring the style of drinking whisky, how its tasted, how it looks and everything! First i ever drank was a cheep grant blend that i thought was kind of nice but i was only 18 so it became a bit overwelming wich led me to drinking it with a few drops of water at first. Then when i became 20 last year(age when you can buy spirits in Sweden) i got myself a mack Mackmyra as my first whisky, swedish as i am and kind of realy loved it, i had tasted both monkeys shoulder, aberlour a'bunadh and the lagavulin 16 and liked them, but now when i bought this bottle(old pulteney 12 released 2018) i just have a hard time wraping my head around what it taste and what is what and leaves me just thinking "wtf is these tastes" because i dont know how oak taste, or what malt taste like.... Could you mabey make a video of the "new" old pulteney or mabey just give me advise on a whisky i shuld try, i realy like walnut notes and faty notes btw! Thanks in advance! :)
Recently opened my first Old Pulteney 12, and I can say it probably won't be a go-to for me, nor a favorite. But it's a pretty decent dram, nonetheless. I feel like it's a few ABV points light. If it were 43%, I'd like it a tad more, perhaps. Great value, though. Bought my bottle for 23 EUR. I think it's a great entry whiskey on a flight where you have Islay/Island whiskies following behind.
If you guys get a chance to try the Johnnie Walker Explorer's club: the spice road it might be worth it. Haven't had it in forever, and I don't know how hard it is to find. Keep up the great content, dudes!
Was having a taste of this tonight and after a taste I had a drink of my Guinness Draught. Weirdest thing. Got a taste of those sweet/tart cherry candies. Delicious but I figured it was a fluke. Tried it again for science and it was the same result. Try it.
Ok...found this video (and channel to which I subbed) because I looked up the Scotch on UA-cam. This was the first bottle that cost me more than JW Black. I am afraid of where this may lead. I can't get over how extra this is in comparison.
It is my 35th Birthday tomorrow, the 31st. I received some money from my parents and came to the conclusion I had enough for whisk(e)y or a new tattoo... I choose the tattoo, but now I need whisk(e)y. Any mooch tips Rex?
You guys Got to 10k, Amazing. Congratulations, i hope i did not miss it long ago BUT congrats! By the way, i did some research about sending you stuff from Germany and it is *insertpuloutcorksoundhere* expensiv! You should try to get your hands on a Bottle of Puni Nero, its a Whisky from Italy, a very young Distelery, and there Nero is ~3-4 Years old and for me THE Whisky to go to if you want to show someone that Age is not the thing that the Whisky needs to have in the first place. It has Plums and some Dark red Fruits, parts of Honny and is just the Balance between Rich and Kind and Komplex and chalenging! it's amazing! After Glenfiddich 18 it is my biggest loved bottle of whisky in my little collection
I found a problem with Daniel's idea that the lack of hair is the only reason he didn't become big, David Draiman, the singer for Disturbed has no hair as well.
I have been debating my next bottle. Shamefully, I must admit, I have avoided Old Pulteney 12 because it often sits among similar shelves and prices as some "lower regarded" whiskey. However, I'm now intrigued. I was going to make my next bottle Oban 14, however, Oban 14 is a $92 bottle where I live. I have read forums in which people compare the character of OP 12 to Oban 14. Would you consider these two whiskeys to share similar character in the least?
Congrats on hitting 10K subscribers guys! Daniel, what was the name of the fine musical institution that was opening for Aerosmith in that fine tale you regaled us with?
Daniel, I got see a couple of Aerosmith concerts while I was on active duty, free tickets through MWR, what venue did you open for Aerosmith? I might have seen you perform and didn't know it! Great videos keep up the good work!!
For some reason, the first thing that popped up in the taste was a good tequila-like taste, basically agave.... Am i crazy irrelevant? Pretty good overall, salty fresh air is the first thing I get, then agave tequila-like taste and some vanilla, spice burn and salt in the medium-length finish...hmm

We insist on our ability to pronounce things however the hell we want :-) (says the state that pronounces Palacios "puh-lashes")
But you said you watched Ralfy! At least try to follow the lead of a Scotsman.
I am getting notes of saltiness. Chill
As someone from Wick (north of Scotland) where this whiskey is from, it very much hurts to hear how they pronounce it!!
This is an awesome story!
The 12 yr old by me is 29 bucks and cant be beat for that price.Needless to say I stocked up big time, Good review guy's
Dear Lord....It's $75 up here in Ontario.
And 75 in BC too, God we are ripped off up here. Going to try it though.
I just paid $70 in SC state and that was considered cheap.. 😳
Alex, it's all good... Watch!
And that is one reason why Aerosmith is my fav band... lol Great story. As always, great show...

Steven Hild, that's awesome. Thanks man 👍. We're really glad to have you with us!
10k!!!!! CONGRATS guys... and Chad
Toastmaster, thank you!
Hell yes, this is one of my favorite whiskies....eight months later after this video was made and subscriptions are pushing 100K! Well done Sirs!
I just bought a bottle of this one today, and i have to say that this one is on my top 10 list and will be one of my all time favourites
God bless Texas! We are keeping you guys in mind!!
I'm glad you put our minds at ease with the emergency plans for the whiskey. Priorities. Although I suspect being up on the 7th or whatever floor affords some protection.
I was just thinking what happens when you mix them and then sure enough that's what you do! Love it! LOL
So, its 2 days later and Ive barely touched the bottle of EW. Old Pulteney has really grown on me. What a journey.
I know he is not mentioned in this episode but super impressed that you guys know who Tom Waits is.
Raymond Ramos, hell yes!
I've had a bottle of Old Pulteney around for a year or so and just tried it the other day. It smells like the ocean or the beach. Quite interesting.
4:25 Rex gets censored at the same time Daniel opens the bottle, and I had to watch a couple times to determine weather it was a censor or the actual bottle noise.
that timing is amazing! lol
old pult nee .
Fucking thank you. Is almost like they’re bourbon drinkers reviewing scotch
Daniel, I always liked your voice. Nice to know that you sing...would love to check out some of your songs!
Cool review guys. The romantic geography and history of this whisky is not lost here.
Its a great whisky for sure.
Drinking OP12 right now, and sporting quite the chub myself!
This is hands-down the best sub-$40 single malt you will ever taste!
If you haven’t tried it, you are missing out…
You know I was perfectly fine being a beer drinker, but you bastards turned me into a whisk(e)y drinker. It's a downward spiral to meth now. Cheers!
You've got about 3 good years left
Also, you're welcome.
Same situation here brother, its a never ending spiral
Seconded. I'll see you there soon
Yup. Just started down this path. Days are numbered
I just bought this one, smelled smooth but not too special to be honest. Then I took a sip and wow, this is a very very good whisky. Very sweet flavor! Vanille, butterscotch and lots of amaretto it seems like.

Ive tried the 21 before and it is truly amazing
Every time i get my hands on the Old Pulteney 12 i pour myself a glass and I come back to this video just to see you guys reveiw the 12 which you do so well this video

It's was itsu original miso soup I had if you can get your hands on it.
Rex FYI it was a complete coincidence that you also mentioned talisker in the video, I'd already written my comment before I had got to that stage.
Congratulations you hit 10K subs! now i think its time to do a Macallan M review and a bottle down ceremony on it just for Rex with a fan blowing his hear so he can be famous. make sure to wear like 12 scarfs Rex!
Justanotherparatrooper, you are gracious and wise with your suggestions.
FYI there is also an Old Pulteney 17. Might be the compromise you were looking for Daniel.
Just picked up a bottle today, that's why I'm here. And yes it was on sale. That's how I pick my whiskey. Hahaha. (March 16th, 2019)
The hurricane comment was funny because I am currently getting the front of a (expected) 4 day storm front here in Oklahoma. My office went from sunny to dark in under 5 minutes. The video is almost two years old, just a funny coincidence.
Hahaha great story! So glad to know that you opened for Aerosmith Daniel!
10,000! Noice! Rex, Congrats on the hair sparkle cherry pop at 3:28 too!
So glad I started working for the Italian distributor of Old Pulteney.
This was maybe my 3rd whiskey and I fell in love with it. Side note: I also remember that hurricane.
Congrats on 10K
Effervescent? For anyone else who is wondering (as I pause the video to expand my vocabulary via google..) A favorite go to of mine. Have not tried the 21. But the 12 is a cheaper Scotch in my area. One which I could and have drank daily. Cheers from Canada.
My favorite Highland. I love me some brine
Daniel, thanks for sharing your Aero Smith story. Love it. Love to hear some of your music
We need to get some Finnish whisky in the vault!
Tried this in a whisky flight last weekend and got so much honey in the mouth. It was nice for something completely different to what I'm used to
I noticed today that Rex had some hair sparkle, but that may have just been dandruff glistening in the sun.
Hoping you two, your family's and friends have stayed safe while harvey spread its havoc and during the aftermath
CONGRATS!! 10000 subscribers!!
WhiskyJason, thank you!

Drink this while eating salty food.....it becomes sweet like dessert. Although I prefer a little more peat in my whisky, this is an all around great Scotch for the money.
Excellent review fellas!
Just found your channel. Love the 12. It really made me decide the whiskey would be a hobby of mine.
Well I'm glad I got the Old Pulteney 12 year that is 43% ABV at retail price in my area. Seems that they're not restocking it anytime soon.
We heard, and for the life of me, we can't find it here.
+Whiskey Vault I remember reading somewhere that it will be exclusively sold to bars
Yeah I read that too. Still wondering if one could find a rep to sell individually, exclusive to bars seems almost impossible to enforce or regulate
Hi guys very interested to hear you two's review on the Aberlour 12 year old doucle cast :)
So if the Hurricane did break the windows, which whiskey would you grab first to save?
Can you put the Writers Tears back with the scotch...it was my visual anchor and I feel adrift at sea without it...
You're going to have to fight it out with Jon
Recently opened my first Old Pulteney 12, and I can say it probably won't be a go-to for me, nor a favorite. But it's a pretty decent dram, nonetheless. I feel like it's a few ABV points light. If it were 43%, I'd like it a tad more, perhaps. Great value, though. Bought my bottle for 23 EUR.
I think it's a great entry whiskey on a flight where you have Islay/Island whiskies following behind.
I'm a huge whisk fan and collector, I'm always looking to learn more about whisky, how do you become a whisky sommelier??
Come join us at the school!
please Im very interested I live in Arizona!!!!!
Just brougt it from the shop. I was surprised, when at the back of the bottle I found a sticker that says "bottled in Japan".
Nope mine is bottled in Scotland in wick. I think you've been ripped off mate
@@alanjbennett3733 it's Suntory, and it tastes good though.
If you guys get a chance to try the Johnnie Walker Explorer's club: the spice road it might be worth it. Haven't had it in forever, and I don't know how hard it is to find. Keep up the great content, dudes!
Daniel's Aerosmith story at 8:17
Can you smell the Sea? Every time first impression , great review of the 12 and 21 apart from the band wind tunnel fans part 😂
Have yall tried Mortlach whiskey?
Just got the 12 and setting on the 21 cant wait to do a side by side tasting !!!just like this video
What band was Daniel in?
Was having a taste of this tonight and after a taste I had a drink of my Guinness Draught. Weirdest thing. Got a taste of those sweet/tart cherry candies. Delicious but I figured it was a fluke. Tried it again for science and it was the same result. Try it.
After the top 10 video finally got 10k suscriptions, set time and date for the live one guys!!!
Jorge Ripoli, next time we shoot we'll go over the live stream plan. Hope you can make it!
Rex i ll!! Am a hard core fan since episode 50 jajajajaj , so count me in !!
Just came to this video to confirm my choice of the next scotch purchase. Old Pulteney 12 it is.
Ok...found this video (and channel to which I subbed) because I looked up the Scotch on UA-cam. This was the first bottle that cost me more than JW Black. I am afraid of where this may lead. I can't get over how extra this is in comparison.
While watching this I was sipping on some Glenmorangie Lasanta. I just toasted,to your health, to my Pitbull, Maggie. I think I've drank too much.
IS Daniel part Irish? We (Irish) don't know how to cut a long story short and it would appear Daniel has that affliction!!
It is my 35th Birthday tomorrow, the 31st. I received some money from my parents and came to the conclusion I had enough for whisk(e)y or a new tattoo... I choose the tattoo, but now I need whisk(e)y. Any mooch tips Rex?
Pikerize, bring a friend that's excited about u getting a tattoo. But they are in charge of bringing the whiskey so you have enough "liquid courage" 😜
HaeschenHarakiri, thank you! We hit 10k yesterday. And don't worry about sending anything if it's too expensive. We're just glad to have you here! 👍
I found a problem with Daniel's idea that the lack of hair is the only reason he didn't become big, David Draiman, the singer for Disturbed has no hair as well.
There is no flaw in my logic. It's the only possible explanation for me not being famous.
A lovely friendly scotch whisky. Its perfect
Bought my bottle today for tonights IL temperature of -13 F and -41 windchill. Can’t wait to try after watching this thanks!! #WinterStormJaden
the 12 is only $50 in my area but always sold out
I just looked up Old Pulteney 21, ...... $536.92!!! Whew!
Daniel, is the inventory updated on the website? Trying to see what I want to send in as a contribution.
I just updated it yesterday!
Excellent! I have a special edition Dalmore that might come your way assuming I can get another shipped to me!
hells yes!
Congrats on hitting 10K subscribers guys! Daniel, what was the name of the fine musical institution that was opening for Aerosmith in that fine tale you regaled us with?
That was a band of mine called "Rhodes"
So this one time when I opened for Aerosmith.... nonchalance continues.
What's with the bobble head images? Also, first?
bagehi it is eye catching.
Me and my brother also call it Old(a) Pull-ta-nanie! ...not sure how you guys do it with a straight face though.
i live were the old pultney whiskeydistilery is made in a place called wick caithness
Daniel, I got see a couple of Aerosmith concerts while I was on active duty, free tickets through MWR, what venue did you open for Aerosmith? I might have seen you perform and didn't know it! Great videos keep up the good work!!
It was in CA at the Paso Robles fair in 2003 or 2004. Can't remember exactly :-)
Bummer, I was at either Ft. Campbell, KY., or getting ready to go to Schofield Barracks, HI..
Hi, guys. Is that a pic of Jim Croce at the door?
For some reason, the first thing that popped up in the taste was a good tequila-like taste, basically agave.... Am i crazy irrelevant? Pretty good overall, salty fresh air is the first thing I get, then agave tequila-like taste and some vanilla, spice burn and salt in the medium-length finish...hmm
Where are you guys? I’m in austin and would love to have a whiskey with you
Any peated whiskeys or bourbons?
How can you not mention orange zest & black pepper
