Old Pulteney 12 was my first single malt whisky bottle that I bought. I remember I liked it and it was interesting for a newbie, but I couldn't compare it to any other malts yet. I have been thinking of buying a bottle to see how it works for me now. I like the shape of the bottle, like a still neck :)
We just nosing this dram as we watch your vid. It’s the last few drams in the bottle that’s been on the shelf for a good few months, and we’ve found that O.P 12 yr old seems better when left in the bottle with some oxygen for 4 or so months. We’re getting stewed Apple and leather on the nose with just a hint of salt, almond, marzipan, and cough candy. There’s more going on than there is fresh out the bottle. There’s a some kind of herb as well, but I can’t put my finger on it yet. Tasting…slow weak arrival…and finish, a little black cherry and pepper, a very slight tad of brine, but not a whole lot going on really. Better on the nose. Great vid gals, love your your more relaxed and humorous approach to tasting, keeps it real and unpretentious.
Jen’s perception of Old Pultney being the old man at the bar is exactly how I was introduced to it. I was visiting Scotland from Canada and was at a bar in Glasgow with my dad. We were going to order some whiskey when an ‘old man’ at the bar asked if we were American. “Candian” we say and he laughs “Same thing!” making some comment about our funny accents. So I reply “That’s rich coming from an Englishman!” Well he got a bit hot “I’m no Englishman, I’m SCOTTISH!” So I said “Ah! So you know how it feels!” He paused for a thought….”I’ll buy ya a dram!” And he bought us a round of Old Pultney saying it was Scotland’s best kept secret. This was about 10 years ago now. Love the show! I just stumbled on it the other day and I’m glad I did. It’s lit a fire in me to return to Scotland!
It’s one of my favourite, if not downright favourite, budget friendly, so called “supermarket whiskies” available in the UK. Mouth watering nose and flavour profile hitting all the right spots for me. Often available for £25 or less to boot!
A wis gonnie try it just fur a riot . Thanks for your videos it's been great to see what's out there and the help and information you give . Gon yer self 👍🥃
My first trip to Scotland and I wanted to visit a distillery, I had only had a single malt in a chocolate liquor and decided that as I enjoyed that I should visit the distillery which made it. Off I went to old pulteney and while there sampled the range drinking my first ever single malts neat and tried a distillery only bottling which was a 15 Year old single cask sherry matured at cask strength. That's when I fell in love with whisky
I loved this dram in my early whisky days circa 1990's - lovely clean Highland sea whisky.- haven't tasted the recent weaker one tho. Rachel, you and I have swam up a mangrove river in Cuba! No crocs but we did meet a large barracuda!!! Scary!!!
I've always had a soft spot for Old Pulteney 12, Rileys by the by was taken over by Rowntree Macintosh and is now part of Golden "not much in a bag" Wonder! so there you Pop!!
Sipping Old Pultney and watching this. I really like it. I would give it a 7/10 only because I have been spoiled by tasting some great malts. Very drinkable. One-third of the bottle was gone confirming the Grails tasting notes.
I don't mind this for a fresh dram or a starter. They did drop it from 43% and a lot of their other bottles which is a shame as they were certainly better. I do have a Cask Strength 2010 10yr at 59% which is amazingly rich and creamy. Cheers!
Its a bit viscous as well. Girs have you tried the Aber Falls I know it's from wale but it's quite surprising smooth ,fruity, some caramel notes as well but very pleasant
No we haven't but really want to! We used to work with their master distiller Kirstie at Deanston and she's great so its on our list for sure!! Glad to hear you have enjoyed it as we haven't heard much on it at all!
have a friend who owns a lighthouse in wick and always has a bottle of this with him, took a bottle of this round a 5 day hike through the cairngorms, even got rood of some of our food we had to last us the 5 days to make room for it!
Nice review ! Nice whisky not expensive at all...Here in Paris costs around 30 euros. Very salty, a hint of peanuts and salted butter caramel The old version that I'd never tasted was at 43%.. The taste for me is not so far to the Jameson black barrel (very nice whiskey !!!!! )
You girls are hilarious. Love the content and the banter. I see you’ve had the Cardrona offerings, but have you had anything from Tasmania? Absolutely try and get your mitts on Overeem Port Cask Cask Strength. It’s so scrumptious and gooey and just brilliant. All single casks too! Much love and keep bringing the banter ladies, love it - from Australia
I'm sure it's good, but Old Pulteney is one of those distilleries that still insists on adding coloring to deceive their would-be customers, so I avoid them. I know, I'm a snob - but I subscribe anyway:).
I'm coming up a with a Google like translator for whiskey tasting/nosing notes. For instance, coastal means dead fish, farmy means hot manure, vegetal means grass clippings, floral means old lady in a bingo parlor, tobacco means an old man at the horse races, leather means an old shoe, nutty means moldy peanuts, smokey means fire in a tire factory, oily means the grease left in the pan, peppery means rancid hot sauce, toffee means the cheap candies from grandmas purse, nutmeg means ginger snaps from the back of the closet, cherry means cough syrup, and vanilla means the artificial flavoring used to mask everything that normally tastes horrible.
Lol, we'll allow you! Tbh I think it had put us off too but I don't think we'd have noticed that if tasting it blind! Having said that, how amazing could it be otherwise . . . !?
on the recommendation and the proclaimed love for the 18yo ledaig by the lady on the right i got one for myself . i am desperately looking for excuses to keep it closed for a [wee] bit . but it is a loosing battle , and the corp will be popped before years end.
Love you ladies!
I don’t understand anything you say, but y’all are so awesome.
Great review!
Thanks, keep listening and drink some more whisky (responsibly) and it will all make sense!
Old Pulteney was very refreshing, totally different than any scotch I had before.
Glad you agree! Lovely wee dram!

Love how a whisky review can go off kilter into mangrove territory... subscribed
Thanks for the subscribe! I think we are off kilter more often than on it tbh!!
A delightful dram in all its simplicity, but still a great whisky. Love it! Great review!
It reminds me of fish flakes and old books. Definitely a character, and worth a try.
Oh! Some interesting notes there!

Great notes there! We definitely find some are better after a wee while open! Thanks for watching!

Haha Good on ya for getting him back!! And you got a dram out of it! Well done! And glad you enjoyed it!
I’ve been enjoying your videos. You should put your logo on the wall behind you.
Oh Thanks Joseph! That is a really good idea. I can't believe we didn't think of that! We'll see what we can muster up!

Cool channel, nice to add some whiskey content that’s not just crabbit old men hunkered over a barrel into the rotation.
Hahahah 🤣🤣 thanks for tuning in, glad to be adding some diversity to the mix!

😨😎
Thats my favourite "Supermarket" dram. The 15 is my current favourite whisky at the moment.
I've always had a soft spot for Old Pulteney 12, Rileys by the by was taken over by Rowntree Macintosh and is now part of Golden "not much in a bag" Wonder! so there you Pop!!
Oh! Great facts on Rileys! I always wondered where they went!!
Was just enjoying a dram of this, and wanted to know your thoughts on it. I like it, but agree that a bit more than 40% would be nice.
Sipping Old Pultney and watching this. I really like it. I would give it a 7/10 only because I have been spoiled by tasting some great malts. Very drinkable. One-third of the bottle was gone confirming the Grails tasting notes.
Perfect! Glad to have you sipping along!
Loved the reaction when you tasted it. It is a fantastic Whisky for me. Cheers!
Exactly! And we had pretty much forgotten about it! Its good to revisit oldies from time to time!
Really like Old Pulteney 12 as an easy daily tipple. Salted caramel/toffee and a coke float is what i get from it
as a newcomer to Whisky I absolutely adore it. like the character and all about it, only knock on it is the 40%
Years ago the US was getting the 43% version. The ABV was dropped to 40% with the rebrand.
Really and truly the best $40 single malt Scotch with unique flavors that holds its own against many other more expensive whiskeys…
Definitely!!!
I agree with Jen. I think it's a 'drinking all your days' dram.
It just is isn't it!
I don't mind this for a fresh dram or a starter. They did drop it from 43% and a lot of their other bottles which is a shame as they were certainly better. I do have a Cask Strength 2010 10yr at 59% which is amazingly rich and creamy. Cheers!
That's exactly it! A dram to start the evening! Oh that sounds lovely!
Its a bit viscous as well. Girs have you tried the Aber Falls I know it's from wale but it's quite surprising smooth ,fruity, some caramel notes as well but very pleasant

Just go a hence to taste this and really enjoyed it so two bottle now on order.
Nice one!

😂 Priorities!
Never tried the 12 yet, but have a bottle of the 15, with similar notes.....it is a good purchase.
Oh we'll have to give the 15 a go too!
Nice review !
Nice whisky not expensive at all...Here in Paris costs around 30 euros.
Very salty, a hint of peanuts and salted butter caramel

Much love and keep bringing the banter ladies, love it - from Australia
That sounds fantastic! We don't get much from Tasmania here. We might have to go for a visit!
Tax write off for the business with the amount of distilleries there. Do it while you’re young!
I just let it sit out for an hour. It changed definitely! Some smoke, black sooty
Aww we'll need to try it again, we got no smoke first time round!
¥5,000 here in Japan... reasonable I guess.
I do miss the supermarket deals that are constantly going on at supermarkets in Scotland
Need to give it a try! Have always just passed it by.
Definitely worth a shot!
Definitely the best sub $40 single malt out there.
I’d put it up against many other more expensive whiskeys any day.
Before the rebranding we got this at 43% in the US and it was $35usd. Really wish I had stocked away half a dozen bottles back then. Cheers ladies
Aw wow!
The 15yo is a stunner. Best out of the 12 & 18. Shame the 12 was dropped from 43% to 40%.
Yeah defo, will need to try the 15 now!
I am drinking Jeffersons small batch Bourbon. Its really good.
Ooh nice! Enjoy!
I'm no getting salty at all
I'm getting sweet with a slight burn at the end of the swallow.
I am the old dude at the bar. 👍
😂

Haha! You had us at "old lady in a bingo parlour"!!!
I wanted to try this but the 40% puts me off… saying that.. I’m a bit of a whisky snob so probably should be watching the channel.
Lol, we'll allow you! Tbh I think it had put us off too but I don't think we'd have noticed that if tasting it blind! Having said that, how amazing could it be otherwise . . . !?
It’s truly a fabulous whiskey.
Lots of flavors that many higher proof whiskeys cannot match on their best day!
on the recommendation and the proclaimed love for the 18yo ledaig by the lady on the right

The lass on the right is Jen, if its cold where you are open it, if not save till Christmas or new year it one hell of a dram.

Is is open yet? Keep us updated! 😂🥃
@@TheGrailTastings recovering from covid at the moment , so i am saved from the ''grand'' opening by medication 😃
Salty, Savory , and quite thick….😮😂
Totally agree! Thanks!
*Is that an Irish accent?*
Both Scottish!
You are really missed
We'll be back soon promise 🥹!!
Too salty for my taste given the less complex flavor profile. Something to save for someone else who enjoys it properly.
Fair! Each to their own!
