    As an actor myself..I cant imagine what it must have been like for the girls in the Bway production to feel they peaked at such an early age. How can that experience be topped? Most performers never make it to Bway and those who do only do once..unless youre a star.

    This documentary rang true for me on so many levels. I was in full-time competition dance until I was 11. I grew up in the studio, going there 7 days a week immediately after school and all weekend. Traveled to competitions like the kids on Dance Moms. I had no friends at school and didn't care, all my friends were my teammates and competitors. Mom and Dad pulled me out cold turkey at 11 when it got too expensive, and suddenly I was a loner at school with no friends, had skipped all the birthday parties and sleepovers, and I lost what had made me special. It took years even in adulthood to redefine what that meant and is still something I struggle with. I was so amazing, had trophies and awards and could sing and dance and was being scouted by agents, and suddenly nobody cared. I wasn't delusional or big headed, It was quite a shock for a little kid.

    I'm so disappointed that this documentary isn't available on Hulu anymore. It was incredibly interesting, although I think it would've been awesome if the other orphans from the 1982 movie spoke about the experience, besides pepper and Kate who spoke in the film. I feel so bad that Kristen and Joanna had those incredibly difficult experiences with what was supposed to be such an exciting time for them. I couldn't imagine being their age and having to deal with someone else replacing me in my dream role on Broadway.

      hey theater kid here who has done annie multiple multiple times and have been up for the tour but didn’t end up getting it, sometimes the directors just see something in someone. Joanna was an amazing singer but damaged her voice a lot with her voice and she was almost too old. Britney wasn’t as good as a singer AT ALL but she had an innocence in her and she had something special that sometimes people who weren’t apart of the production just don’t understand. Maybe Joanna was hard to work with or just something wasn’t clicking in rehearsal. it was a lot of money on the line and the directors and producers did what they thought was best. This doesn’t mean that I think this was okay. I think they should’ve let joanna go to broadway and then cut her after a few weeks so she could’ve at least made her broadway debut. And are we not talking about kristen and andrea? Andrea replaced kristen but nobody blinks an eye because andrea is amazing. Britney wasn’t bad at all. Not at all. Though I still believe Joanna makes a better annie I can understand the decision. She knew too much because she was older. Britney was very very innocent which is what I guess they wanted in that certain production. Thank you for coming to my ted talk 😌

      McArdle had negative things to say in an interview. She sounded very angry and bitter insisting that the women in the documentary were never Broadway actresses and that they should just get over it. In later years her daughter would go on to play Young Cosette in some professional production of Les Miserables.

      @zebrastreet9993 2 роки тому +2

      bookwoman53 It sounds like McArdle was frustrated with the negative spin the documentary took on the experience of the girls in the show, since hers was very positive and the doc definitely seemed to play up the angst of these girls as they struggled with aging out of the show and, for most of them, their careers. As for her daughter, “some professional production” of Les Miserables was actually the original Broadway production.

      @@bookwoman53 I hate to tell you this but to survive in show business, especially as a kid, you have to take one of two options: you either become really tough or you becoming very optimistic. Arlene strikes me as being a tough cookie who was able to develop her talent because she was able to take the direction and not take it to heart and her being frank about others is probably a part of it. Aileen Quinn who played her in the 1982 movie strikes me as being the opposite. She always talks about how "Annie was my first love" and how she had a great time on the stage and in the movie and how she still loves to perform and is so thankful for he childhood and her mom.

    I was facinated by Andrea McArdle. I wanted to play the role of little orphan Annie on Broadway when I was a child. I'm sure hundreds of children wanted that role. It's based off of the poem Little Orphant Annie
    Little Orphant Annie's come to our house to stay,
    An' wash the cups an' saucers up, an' brush the crumbs away,
    An' shoo the chickens off the porch, an' dust the hearth, an' sweep,
    An' make the fire, an' bake the bread, an' earn her board-an'-keep;
    An' all us other children, when the supper-things is done,
    We set around the kitchen fire an' has the mostest fun
    A-list'nin' to the witch-tales 'at Annie tells about,
    An' the Gobble-uns 'at gits you
    Ef you
    Don't
    Watch
    Out!
    Wunst they wuz a little boy wouldn't say his prayers,--
    An' when he went to bed at night, away up-stairs,
    His Mammy heerd him holler, an' his Daddy heerd him bawl,
    An' when they turn't the kivvers down, he wuzn't there at all!
    An' they seeked him in the rafter-room, an' cubby-hole, an' press,
    An' seeked him up the chimbly-flue, an' ever'-wheres, I guess;
    But all they ever found wuz thist his pants an' roundabout:--
    An' the Gobble-uns 'll git you
    Ef you
    Don't
    Watch
    Out!
    An' one time a little girl 'ud allus laugh an' grin,
    An' make fun of ever' one, an' all her blood-an'-kin;
    An' wunst, when they was "company," an' ole folks wuz there,
    She mocked 'em an' shocked 'em, an' said she didn't care!
    An' thist as she kicked her heels, an' turn't to run an' hide,
    They wuz two great big Black Things a-standin' by her side,
    An' they snatched her through the ceilin' 'fore she knowed what she's about!
    An' the Gobble-uns 'll git you
    Ef you
    Don't
    Watch
    Out!
    An' little Orphant Annie says, when the blaze is blue,
    An' the lamp-wick sputters, an' the wind goes woo-oo!
    An' you hear the crickets quit, an' the moon is gray,
    An' the lightnin'-bugs in dew is all squenched away,--
    You better mind yer parunts, an' yer teachurs fond an' dear,
    An' churish them 'at loves you, an' dry the orphant's tear,
    An' he'p the pore an' needy ones 'at clusters all about,
    Er the Gobble-uns 'll git you
    Ef you
    Don't
    Watch
    Out!

    "Ive been diagnosed with Bipolar disorder" "I became anorexic" sheesh!!!

    • @mperry1329
      @mperry1329 9 років тому +3

      Cari Kotcher (Since we are on the subject--bear with me please--you are right about the "Sheesh!") This young woman became Bipolar because in this business, so much is demanded of you every single time and you are never as good as the last performance and I truly empathise and understand this from my former working experiences. Working nearly destroyed my mental health (to the point where I could be dead today if NOT for the meds and my Faith in Christ--even if you find that Faith is dumb or useless, Faith is very real for me--- and these two truly work for me). I needed a permanent retirement as a result. I have worked in so many vocations long term and short term. I worked really very hard and gave my whole devotion every day no matter where I worked. I had to perform and be "on" when I felt like utter dung. As a result to the equally mentally ill bastards who worked around me and waylaid THEIR own anxieties and psycho-dramas every day of my working life, this stripped me of being a person without my ever having realised it. Bipolar is VERY real and disabling. NO one who has it, wants it, nor wants to admit to having it because it tears up your physical health and your overall normalcy and quality of life. Bipolar is a direct fingerprint of constant harassment, abuse of power--even physically, constant demands which does LEAD into eating disorders and burnt relationships that you never realise until you are seen by a specialist. Bipolar is one of the worst kind of being "aware and yet non aware" disorder that anyone can ever have because it has a very high level towards suicidality and disfiguring one's self (cutting--the cutting is NEVER a cry for help, it is part of the Bipolar disorder and it isn't something that anyone can "snap themselves out" of or "get over"). It comes from a life of verbal, physical and mental abuse and manipulation of every sort and having to TAKE it when you truly have no choice to escape. It is an awful disorder to have. If you are not on medications or if you do not have a source of Faith, this disorder WILL kill you and it is SO unexpected and sudden that it is just as devastating to your friends and family as if you died from an incurable cancer or a cancer which is (like Lupus) hidden until something that would be common for others is intolerable for the person who has BiPolar. BiPolars are not easy to live around without medication and additional life long therapy. I apologise for sharing so much, but I hope that others who come across this will read it because it is a very serious disorder and it it is not anything to second guess or to be mistreated by others because those without this disorder are very fortunate and blessed, but, Bipolars must take this seriously and not discard their meds because it only gets worse into a darkness like none other and that is where the act of suicide comes in, not because the patient is selfish or does not care, it is because they are truly sick. They are not murderers or people who "get off" on hurting anyone. They are the most injured people up there with the other fatal mental disorders. Thank you for being patient to read this.

You have beat out thousands to get there, told you're the best of the best, sign autographs, do interviews, have people scream and clap live for you every night and then producers say "Goodbye. You're not special enough to have this anymore." For those who aren't ready to say goodbye it must be tough to find yourself after that.

      Because Kristen Vigard is the first one who performed Annie. However, she was replaced because the producers thought that Kristen plays too sweet for the street-smarted orphan girl

    I think it's abusive to not let a child enjoy being young. Some kids are driven and really want to perform. Others are pushed by their patents. In any event, more should be done to ensure that kids in show business have the support to grow into well adjusted adults. My siblings and I were given dance lessons and all taught to play a musical instrument. I enjoyed the lessons and playing music and tap dancing. I have never enjoyed performing before an audience. I could never make my mother understand, that all the training in the world does not make a person wa t to perform before an audience.

    I understand that this was difficult for the girls however I do understand them being replaced. I love performing but I feel that some of these girls unfortunately have crazy money obsessed moms who don't care about their daughters wishes they just want the fame and money. It's also unfortunate about Joanna but I do hope she understands that they can't have a 14 year old girl playing Annie (especially when she's told by doctors she can't either) and loads of Annie's and orphans move on to doing more Broadway shows and/or other performing jobs (just look at Lilla Crawford for example) so I feel that this documentary only focuses on the negatives...

    I feel it's a bit patetic this women haven't move on with their lives and seem yet so clintching to this experience. Yes, it was brodway. Yes, you had talent. Yes, you can still sing. But life is exactly that - specially in showbiss.
    Me as a kid? Perfect voice! Sing beautifully, acted like a suberb revelation...
    A few years into age and voice was gone.
    I tell this just to make people realize everything as a time-stamp in it. Even when it doesn't seem to. There's always a need to reinvent yourself. I bet that even great long life famous actors like Meryl Streep feel the same.

      Did you watch the documentary? Most of the women have moved on with their lives but did talk about how hard it was to do so do the experience.

      It's not negative. It's an honest look at how the experience of being in Annie impacted on their lives. Having been an orphan in the original West End production in 1981, I completely relate to their memories and emotions.
      This documentary is brilliant...it's the highs, the lows, warts and all.
