Joanna is such an amazing Annie! How could they recast her! She has such a powerful voice. Joanna was a much better Annie! I feel SO sad! 😣
They wanted to have the youngest annie for publicity.
Ps my mom and grandma and I both felt that what the producers did to her was HORRIBLE!. It wasn't even her understudy which took over the role which to me shows they were just hoping for a chance to put someone else in the role for a while.
She had a better voice than Brittany and was more age appropriate for the role. I think there might have been some hanky panky between Brittany’s mom and one of the producers. I remember hearing that.
@@stephaniemc9948 I have heard that and I heard that Nell Carter was demanding a younger/smaller Annie so she could appear more threatening. (I heard Nell was difficult to work with but being a Broadway legend, they probably figured that it would guarantee sales if she was in it even if they had to fire Johanna)
The voice is not everything. You need a kid who can act as well or the show falls flat. Joanna can’t act.
all I can say is she could definatly belt out tomorrow and her singing was amazing
Having been on Broadway myself...I can tell you with honesty that feelings are not a priority to producers.....sadly, its all about MONEY to them. I doubt they felt much remorse about firing her.
Exactly and it wasn't the director it was the producers. I heard that one of the producers was rehearsing Brittany behind the director's back.

that "lady" is Andrea McArdle. She was the first ever Annie on Broadway.
the problem with this show is that the treat the kids as if they are professional adult actors. Just because they are on broadway doesn't make them ready to be treated as pros, if any of these girls were starting out as adults, they'd have turned out fine, but at that age they aren't prepared for it.

I would never put my kid through an audition with Martin Charnin. He second-guessed himself on the first Annie and wound up with arguably the best child who ever played it. He seems doomed to always think there’s a better girl around the corner and is terrified if a little girl doesn’t relive his 70s glory. It’s just not going to happen. Joanna was as good as any kid could possibly be.
This is so disturbing. She was fantastic. She should never have been fired. Their production wasn't doing so well so she got scapegoated. She wasn't the problem. She was fantastic, this was so unfair and handled so terribly.
I agree. I had a couple of friends who saw her in it while she was on tour and they said she was good but some people had issues with some of the new staging aspects and I think set designs and certain other aspects of the direction. One of my friends saw the tour with Joanna and Brittny after it moved to Broadway and said that Joanna was hands down better in the role and Brittny was just too young and couldn't see that as well as what was needed. Her opinion was Brittny would have more suited for molly.
I heard that that particular Annie show didn’t last long after Joanna was fired. Serves them right. Brittny was ok but Joanna was better
Britny was good but she was eight and they sort of panicked. She was good the way a local dinner theater Annie is good. Joanna had done 106 performances and was just getting better and better. She had star quality like Andrea McArdle and would have grown the same way. Britny was cute but she didn’t make your jaw drop like Andrea, Joanna, Lilla Crawford on stage or Aileen Quinn on film.

The critic reviews on Joanna were less than thrilling. Her singing is phenomenal. However, her acting skills didn't match her singing abilities. Some felt the chemistry between Annie and Warbucks was lackluster at best. This was a 4 million dollar production. Average reviews were not okay when money is involved. They started testing out other orphans. Everything seem to fit together when Brittny took the role. They offered to let the two girls share the role. However, they couldn't reach agreement. The offer was turned down. They then fired joanna by fax. This particular production had a lot a negativity associated with it. At one point, two orphans messed their lines. They then decided to exclude them from from curtain call. Christiana's mother felt that Neil Carter was too harsh with the children. There was a tour after this production Ended.
If Joanna was that bad, how did she get cast in the first place? Those are all excuses from the producers or media rumors.
@@Ihdc1 Joanna was talented. However, some were unsure if the the right girl was even at the auditions. Reviews were average. Sometimes things just don't come together how people want them to. People don't want to spend 4 million dollars for average reviews. They offered to let Brittny and Joanna share the role. They were unable to reach an agreement.
@@Ihdc1 Lol. There are reviews saying Joanna and the actor playing Warbucks had zero chemistry. It wasn't just the producers. Lol.
Did you watch the documentary? They were hesitant to hire Joanna in the first place. There were comments that even just kids from the street would be better than the finalists.
They also make a huge mistake of turning the audition process into a spectacle. I honestly can't fathom that they casted an Annie without having her read opposite Warbucks. That relationship is key to Annie's success.
Was Christina the one who played Molly? If so I can see her mom being protective of her and saying something like that. In the documentary she said that she was very adamant that if her daughter ever didn't want to do it they would leave. Also, what the heck on making someone miss curtain call because they messed their lines? That's harsh even for an adult. Let them do the curtain call then just review it. Even Andrea McCarde the Original Annie once said in an interview she forgot a line one night.

This will probably not be uploaded on here as a whole because the creator is very protective of the project and the film brings up some very diverse opinions. As in positive and negative vibe's from different people. To be honest the creator just can not take people not liking the film. Me myself think it is ok and interesting.
Not sure who you are or why you would say such a thing. I welcome all opinions regarding my film.

@@JulieStevensactress I like your film Julie: I bought it on Amazon Prime. When I was younger. my grandma loved to hear me sing and thought I should be on Broadway but always encouraged me to focus on school instead of performing. After watching your film, I am glad that she and my mom refused to let me become a child performer.
A lot of people talk about how someone needs to give her a break...She has had an album out on a major label. She's had major artists cover songs she's written. I don't feel THAT bad for her.
And I'm sure it was devastating to be fired, but that didn't stop people around her from making her re-live it by putting her on display on talk show after talk show. If the same thing had been done to an adult performer, no one would have cared.

A decade late but she later got dropped by her label due to budget cuts and was disqualified from American Idol as well. She's been quite the unlucky woman.

Yeah, she did say that. She meant "It's not going to be me as Annie no more"
She obviously stumbled with her words because she was really upset and started to cry.
She was amazing. I don't get it. The reviews were all good from what I understand. She obviously had what it takes. From the outside looking in and not having all of the insider knowledge, it certainly looks like it was an injustice. But again, not having all of the insider knowledge...but that's the harsh reality of the business.
I'm not sure, but I'm guessing it was the difficult touring schedule and the demands of the role.

No she wasn't. She was belting, but in a healthy way. The song demands a belt. If you thinking belting is akin to screeching, you'll never like anyone singing this song.
