Well I never! The centre of Edinburgh. I shall be saying hello to the bollard next trip. 😊
Always enjoyable, Tony and thanks for taking time to show us around again. I love the wee stories.
I thought for a moment you were going to into the Archivist's Gardens behind Register House. Well worth a peep.
I'd love to get into the old cells on the Mile where the ex police museum was. It was a working station but full of interest. I wish it would open up again, but police cuts? There was a friendly & knowledgeable desk sergeant l called Eddie McMillan who was a fund of stories when I was researching Jessie King, the baby farmer. (Look her up. Horrible, but a fascinating story from Stockbridge.)
Some interesting characters lived in Stockbridge. Madame Doubtfire, Dora Noyce (🤭) to name but a couple.... .and my Granny, too!
Look forward to next time - 💯% always!

This is the quirky quality informative content which made me subscribe. St. Giles’ bells are beautiful, what a lovely sound. I absolutely love that spot behind St. Cuthbert’s, from Princes Street down the steps to the graveyard. Lovely view of that gorgeous castle and a beautiful lamppost. I save every photo I find if it. I cannot wait to go back.

The building opposite is not the City Archives which is in the City Chambers. It is General Register House which holds national records. Records of births, marriages and deaths are kept in New Register House which stands on the west side of General Register House, up the little street at the side of the Apple Store.

Oh my goodness. We were leaning on the "center of Edinburgh" post, waiting for our tour to begin. I did wonder why it was different then the others and has a ring on the top of it. I knew about John Knox's marker being in the car park and you had already talked about the graveyard towers - in the video about Dean's village I think. Great job. I tell anyone who even thinks about going to Scotland to check out your videos. Another great job!

Oh and I highly recommend THE LAMPLIGHTER by Anthony O'Neill. Because of the Watch Towers...
(There is an upcoming book launch next Thursday at Waterstones with him for his latest novel THE DEVIL UPSTAIRS)
I think Greyfriars Graveyard was created because the St Giles Graveyard became to small for burials and it was kind of protection to move away from the centre because of diseases. But I think they never moved buried bodies from there - on the other hand they moved bodies from old Calton Burial Ground to the New Calton Burial Ground. So it might be possible..

Another fun fact is that former General Post Office marked the start of the A1 , Britain's longest road at 410 miles or 610 km , which isn't long compared to the Pan - American Highway at 29,800 miles !. If you cross the road at that junction on Waterloo place by the centre traffic lights it is the only place you can still see the remains of the original tram tracks dating from 1871 to 1956 ! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edinburgh_Corporation_Tramways#/media/File:Cable_car_tracks,_Waterloo_Place__-geograph.org.uk-__1516785.jpg " The car park where Renton & Begbie had their kerfuffle ", ha ha , so funny !!!. Nice video! Did you see the "Cemetary Cottage"? I think it used to be the church school. It's built into the cemetary wall with headstones making up part of its ground floor. I wish I had the 335 thousand pounds asking price to spend on this creepy crib! I would haunt the grounds by night...on my way to Five Guys Burgers! In years to come those who dared St. Cuthberts after dark would tell of strange "burp-like" groans that were always accompanied by the smell of fried potatoes! Go Clan Broonford!

Love your videos, and weird facts! Going to look for watchtower and parking spot #23. They did the same in San Diego California. San Diego, Old Town graveyard ( old for California is 1769 when first mission was made) was inconviently right where they wanted to make a street so they just paved it over and put little metal disc in the cement to let people know there is a body under there...out of respect for the dead of course! So as you walk down that area you will see (if you are looking hard) the little disc on the ground and out on the street being run over by cars! Who knows what founders are buried under the street now.

The post showing the center of the city is where all the street numbers in old Edinburgh started from. So if you were lost in Edinburgh, whatever street you were in if you walked towards the lowest numbered end of the street and then to the lowest numbered end of the next street etc you’d eventually get to the city centre... however this does not hold true for the parts of town which were once separate from Edinburgh but were swallowed up (Leith for example where the street numbers all start at the bottom of leith walk where the Leith main post office used to be).

Well, damn it... now you show me! I just left Scotland on the 22nd! Oh well... next trip (and there WILL be another!). You're right, it was packed with people attending the Fringe... and we were two of them. LOL Got to see Piff the Magic Dragon and Colin Cloud and many other street performers. It was my dream trip and wanted to see as much of Scotland possible in 8 days... without a car. So we covered Inverness, John O'Groats, Uig, Loch Ness, and a lot of other small towns along the way. It all seems like a big blur as I'm sitting here back at home looking over all the pics/videos. I must come back soon! I do have a question for you though... isn't there some kind of marker on the street/sidewalk somewhere in Edinburgh that you're suppose to spit on for good luck? I looked and looked but never found it. :( Sad about them putting a parking lot over a cemetary. But I do love this video - great job! And you're still a funny guy. lol

Tony...always looking forward to your video of Edinburgh. There is another world famous person, Adam Smith who lived and buried in Edinburgh. Last July, I was visiting Edinburgh and was staying off the Royal Mile near the Canongate Kirkyard. Found the house and the grave of Adam Smith, Father of Economics. Maybe you could do a video on such famous people lived and died in Edinburgh.
