You should visit the old dryburgh brewery at 146 Duddingston road west where you can wander freely and soak up the history of the place. There is the old blue bridge which was the social room for the staff which has amazing views over Duddingston loch. The 100 foot old chimney dominates the sky line and there are artefacts just sticking out of crumbling walls. It will be getting developed soon so get in there before it is gone.
OMG...this makes me want to buy 55 Abbeyhill and find a Scottish group or foundation to donate it to. I'd LOVE to bring this building back to life. So wonderful. Thank you for the video. Loved the graveyard as well, of course, and while I was donating the 55 building, I'd use my pretend money to buy all the police boxes and donate them to great organizations to bring them back to life or use them as museums!! :) Thank you.
My daughter and son in law now have an apartment in Holyrood, Edinburgh. When I visit, a graveyard tour will be number one on my list. What a fascinating place.
According to Google, Robert Morham...... 55 Abbeyhill dates back to 1896. A richly detailed building in an unusual castellated Romanesque style which makes a significant contribution to the surrounding area. At the end of the 19th century this area of Abbeyhill was dominated by heavy industry with a chemical works and two breweries situated close to this former police station, with the railway line running close to the rear of the building. While the railway remains, the heavy industry has long gone. Robert Morham (1839-1912) was an Edinburgh based architect who became the City Superintendent of Works in 1873
We are big fans of the decorated police boxes - especially now knowing they’re listed! The one at the bottom of our street is often a churros stall... which we are not complaining about! 😆
Great Video. I never knew that either of the two boxes were listed but I did know that the one just around the corner on the Cowgate at the foot of the old High School Yard steps was classified as "At Risk" which I think gets Historic Scotland involved to protect the basic fabric of the structure.
It was a year ago (9th of Feb) that i was in Edinburgh for a week. I was out for a walk to Calton Hill and stumbled upon both the Old and New Calton Hill Burial Grounds. The weather that day looked to be much the same as it was for you. I love a peaceful old cemetery. I think I found a new one every day of my trip in and around Old Town, Princes Street and Calton Hill areas.
I have recently found your channel, and it is great! Thanks so much! Subseqeuntlly, I have also found that lots of old maps of Edinburgh and Scotland are available to view in great detail on the National Library of Scotland website. I think earth is a stationary topographical plane and I have been fed lots of deceiving, imaginery tales about where I am and who I am. History of Scotland gets cooler and cooler....
I love the randomness Tony and that you are still able to create and share content with us while staying safe 😃 That police station/restaurant sounded so fascinating, definitely makes you wish you could see inside! Thanks for sharing!
In the mid 1980s, I went to a 21st birthday dinner in 55 Abbeyhill Road. It was an Armenian restaurant and the food was ... interesting, with bottles of very sweet Armenian wine with the meal. Also, I think there was no electricity. Dim candlelight at the big table for 40 might have been atmospheric but you had to take a candle with you to go to the toilet as well! The host was getting on a bit but he led us all in Armenian dancing at the end, still in the dim candlelight.
Hello! I’m catching up on your videos!!! Yes graveyards to me are peaceful and can be very interesting and beautiful!! Yours there I would LOVE to walk around read peoples names and see there DOB and date of death..... thank you For another great video!! You are a great story teller and m glad I subscribed to your channel!!! Have a good day Bye for now! Kathy
Oh my goodness, soooo fantastic a video!!!! Random & perfect 😍 It actually led me to Edinburgh World Heritage for more reading and maybe I can volunteer a bit with the cemeteries my next visit over (🤞🤷♀️later 2021??) You are amazing Tony, a shining star 🌟 😊
I stayed in a lovely place right down the hill from the cemetery. We climbed up the hill path and walked thru a good portion of it. Many beautiful monuments.
That was a wonderful video and partly because it was just nice to see you out and about again, but also because I love history and love graveyards. Will definitely look up that graveyard next time I'm in town.
The one I'd like to know the history for is the front of the building that was saved next to the Playhouse (now part of the omni center). I remember it standing on it's own for a long time before the omni was built.
Listed essentially means protected. This link to historic Scotland d should explain it better than me. www.historicenvironment.scot/advice-and-support/listing-scheduling-and-designations/listed-buildings/
It could be a little stand for selling something ... let local population rent them out for a weekend, a month, etc selling homemade snack foods or tshirts etc. wow some cool off the beaten track historical tid bits.
Hello! Love watching all your videos, random question, do you have any videos on, or know anything about the Gayfield Estate in the New Town? I would love to know the history there
Me, too! I'll be visiting The Haggis Hut as well. It's an old police booth now green & on wheels. It's kept in a close on Princes Street & wheeled out to the street when open. [I know all this thanks to one of Tony's videos on the closes of Princes Street!] Another great video! Tony's really making my list of Must Sees in Edinburgh quite lengthy! 😁✌

I hope they keep one of those police boxes as it should be and restore it.

I’m fascinated by graveyards, new Calton burial ground is definitely on the list to visit when I finally get to Edinburgh .

Great video - these are totally random
Thanks mate.
Have you and Tony ever talked about a compilation video??
We have made a couple of things together in the past. Aldo we have spoke about doing more in the future. Keep an eye on the space. 👍
@@ClanBroonford that’s great, I was wondering if you both knew each other..the world never mind our Scotland is too small❤️
Here’s a video we did together a while ago.

Thanks for the bit of history. Loved it. Enjoyed my visits to Edinburg
I have a fascination with graveyards, and this one looks so stunningly interesting. Thanks for introducing me to this “new” place to go.
Loved your knit hat!!!!! Seattle’s brand new hockey team!!!! I live 30 mins away from Seattle.

Great video Tony. We stayed at Darroch Court just across from the Flodden Wall along Pleasance.
Great video as always Tony! You sounded a bit out of breath walking up the hill in the graveyard! 😂😂
I stayed in a lovely place right down the hill from the cemetery. We climbed up the hill path and walked thru a good portion of it. Many beautiful monuments.
Great video😀

Carlton Hill wonderful place to have a walk. Peeked into that same tower in Dec 2019. Can't wait to get back

Loved this video, so fun to re-see Edinburgh!
Thanks Tony - love from Denmark 🌸💕
Really interesting Tony👍
More interesting facts. Thanks, Tony.
Ive been to all these places apart from the last, I love Edinburgh... Being an Airdrie man myself

Love this video and all the tidbits of info!
great video
Great video as always
Enjoyed this 😀
Category B...Buildings of special architectural or historic interest which are major examples of a particular period, style or building type.
Really enjoyed these random facts.
Nice buddy.
Good one Tony...ggtthb.
It's quite busy behind you on the street. Was much quieter back in 2020.
Love those police boxes. Next time a Scot wins a medal in the Olympic Games they should paint them.Might be waiting a while. Maybe not😊
Brilliant idea.....yeah might be a while though. Lol
Interesting video. I have a question though. What does it mean for a building to be listed and what do the categories mean? Please do more of these.
Listed essentially means protected. This link to historic Scotland d should explain it better than me.

@@ClanBroonford Thank you for explaining what "Listed" means. I had a completely different definition. 😊

I have not made any. But I shall see what I can do.
@@ClanBroonford Thank you!
I'm adding these random places to my list. We are Doctor Who fans from way back. I want a picture of the gang in front of a police box.
Me, too! I'll be visiting The Haggis Hut as well. It's an old police booth now green & on wheels. It's kept in a close on Princes Street & wheeled out to the street when open. You guys are going to have the same problem we did with too much to see in too little time. LOL
Is that a Seattle Kraken beanie? They are starting up next year.
Yes it is. It was sent to me by one of our patreon’s.
Nice!! Love it. A buddy of mine and I are becoming fans. Gotta support the local teams. But they don’t start till next season.
you must really live like next door :D
I would like to know the story about Burke and hare please 🙏
Just Google the story Maureen i am sure you will find out about that two folks .
What do you mean “listed”? Meaning it has an address?
Listed mean categorised as protected. Can’t be knocked down.
Unfortunately a lot of the graveyards we went through started looking like homeless camps and teens smoking weed.
The police station is titled in russian which means it was probably russian mafia spot.
