Tony My granny said that the armed forces leaving their loved ones behind at the train station had a nick name for the fast clock they called it the "KISSING CLOCK". As it Gave them time for a Last Kiss (sadly for many it would be their last ever kiss) before they departed to the front... I have often thought that the hotel and the Lord Provost should make this a Permanent name. You should take up this banner... Frank and Anne Marie.... Ggtthb.
I think I knew 4 of the 6 so it's always great to hear more and more and more. I like your bits and bobs anyway, so thank you.
Not allowing any building that blocks YOUR castle is an awesome 👏 idea. The view of your castle is awe inspiring. It won our hearts 💕. Love seeing your beautiful castle.
It’s terrific (for all of us anyway), having you out and about Edinburgh! ☺️
In the 1960's there were air raid shelters in Princes St gardens close to the Scott Monument left over from WWII, i know because i saw them as a child but sadly i've never been able to find anything online to back that up... maybe it was just the air raid shelter signs that were left that made me think that?
Also of potential interest might be the various drinking fountains that Edinburgh once had for public use in the City Centre, i know for a fact that there used to be one at the East end of Princes St and one at the West end of Princes St, there was also at least one on the Mound about halfway up when the road turned left... i know because i used to use them if the local neds hadn't blocked the spouts with chewing gum! lol
I'm also sure that Greyfriars Bobby was at one time a drinking fountain, maybe not in the 1960's or 70's but there was a drinking fountain close by if it wasn't the statue itself.
Enter the H&S culture in the 1980's and all water fountains were decomissioned, i've always suspected that that was to save money but times were changing so who knows?
The Mound in 1959, it had the world's largest electric blanket installed under the road (now decomissioned) to thaw ice and snow so traffic could go up and down.
I love these types of videos Tony. The history is so interesting. It makes me add more stuff to my list to check out when we come back next year. We were going to travel up to the highlands on our next vacation, but because of your videos we want to spend the whole time in Edinburgh to see as much as we can. It was great talking to you through Zoom. You were a gracious host.
Saturday + Coffee + UA-cam... and Tour Guide Tony. Have a good weekend!!
You are pure dead brilliant, great to pass these on to my grandchildren.
Your videos always make me smile! :) Thank you for sharing the city you love!!!
Thanks following from South Africa. Born in Broxburn....love Edinburgh ❣️ My grandparents were Brown & I am now a Ford. 😂
Loved this Tony! My husband and I were lucky enough to be in Edinburgh last summer. We stayed at the hotel on Princes street. It was across from the Scott monument and very close to Marks and Spencer. So happy to see the places on the street where we walked. We could see the monument and the castle from our window. Hopefully we will be back someday.
Interesting and lesser known fact....
The statue of a bear in Prince's Gardens, Wojtek, a name that means, 'he who enjoys war'.
Wonder how many readers will check that out lol.
Love the story of wojtek. You can still see the area he ended up staying at Edinburgh zoo.
Knew all these (apart form the NB [sorry still think of it as the North British[1]] clock being corrected at Hogmanay). Mind you I am Edinburgh born and breed(out at Balerno now), I like these videos about Edinburgh, you don't have to always learn something to enjoy yourself.
[1] Seem to remember when it was first renamed , to stop people totaly rebeling against the new idea, ' they' were going to call it "The New Balmoral" so it was still NB .
Most didn't seem that upset, so it was just named "The Balmoral" .
Thanks very much mate. 👍
Love the video. This is the sort of history I love to learn. Thanks for taking a walk on a windy day!
I'm in Edinburgh right now and your videos have helped me with my stay! Cheers!
Great videos! Have you ever been to Holyrood Architectural Salvage? It is a salvage yard set in the Tun rooms of the old Dryborough’s brewery which is possibly the only one left in Edinburgh. You can wander the yard see the brew house, the stables etc and see loads of Edinburgh’s history in the salvage yard.
It ain't ugly.....its Scottish history in the making tony!!!!!!!
Ur vlogs are gggggreat to watch an share with my son an friends across the world
I love your videos. My dream is to live in Edinburgh, even for a short time.
I did know about the clock. But I didn’t know they turned back for Hogmanay. If you think about it, it is kind of logical. That’s about it. Most of the other facts were new to me, except the mound.
Thanks Tony, for an excellent video. Stay safe.
That was so interesting! Thank you from South Africa! Love watching. Happy to see good weather there, too.
Great video and enjoyed those facts! I did know about the name (King George's sons) but everything else was new.
Ach, Tony, it's not your castle.......its MINE! Lol 🤣 Another fab video! 😊x
In Edinburgh on a city break and loving your videos as our basis for sightseeing. Royal Mile next up 🤗
Thank you so much. Hope you have a great trip.
On the opposite side from Starbucks, just past the Tollbooth Tavern there is an arch leading to Dunbar's Close Garden. Go check in there. Tony showed us this in one of his video's about Closes On The Royal Mile and thanks to him found it.
Just a p.s. my grannie who died age 109 was stationed in Edinburgh as gran law was a railway blacksmith. As a youngster I couldn’t spell Edinburgh, this is the rhyme she taught me………Edward Died In November Buried Under Robert Graham’s House. Using the first letters to spell Edinburgh and the rhyme is true history……just a wee fact.
Perfect video for a Saturday morning. Thank you for this!
Love from Inger and Sweden
This was such a fascinating video. I love learning about our city. Great video! :)
So interesting as always, Tony, a great way to while away some time on the weekends!
All 6 of your facts are news to me.
I really enjoyed this. I love learning new things about Edinburgh!
fantastic as usual.
I hope we from Sweden will soon e able to go to Edinburgh, I miss it.
I so look forward to Saturday mornings to watch Tony's new video!!
I knew about the clock but the rests of the lesser known facts were new to me! Thanks for a great vlog Tony. Hope you and the family are safe and well!
Thanks for another interesting video Tony x
enjoyable.
Another great video. Learn something new everyday.
Another great video ...I knew about the first two and the last one but not the other ones....well done once again for your expert knowledge on my favourite city..😊
Interesting informational video, Professor Broonford. I learn more and more from videos such as these. Slàinte.
Oohh exciting trip around Princess Street!! Thanks!!! :-D
Great video😁
The mound had a heating system to melt the ice when it was cobbled to get the horses and carts up an down
It’s still there, but is never used now. Mentioned it in a few videos. 👍
@@ClanBroonford The door to access the pump room is still there behind the Galley and I have have been promised a look inside the next time I am working there
I have some photos of it
Thank you
Princes St. not Princess St. I just love these bits you find Tony!
Nice to see Edinburgh getting busy post lockdown
10:15 - fun facts about those spikes, they are very sharp! one of my friends fell into one of them on a night out and it pierced his chest
I love learning more about the city I love, so thank you. I'll expand on what you've said with a couple other points.
There is currently a St. Giles Street. It is across the High St. from St. Giles Cathedral and wraps to the left in front of the Bank of Scotland before connecting with the Mound. However, given that this street was likely constructed in the 1800s (e.g., Cockburn St. was 1860s), the suggestion of that name for Princes St. would pre-date the existence of the current St. Giles St.
Regarding the timing on the Balmoral clock, it is worth noting that the Balmoral Hotel was constructed by the North British Railway and until the start of the 1990s was the North British Hotel (originally the North British Station Hotel). It was originally directly connected (i.e. business-wise) to Waverley Station (just as the Caledonian Hotel was part of the Caledonian Railway at the demolished Prince St. Station).
Regarding the balconies on Princes Street. That was a small part of the ambitious 1949 Abercrombie Plan, which would have seen all the buildings on Princes St. demolished and replaced by 'modern' edifices connected with balconies (surely inspired by what was then the top of Leith Street as well as what continues to exist as Victoria Terrace). There were also proposals to run a motorway through Princes St. Gardens and other parts of the city centre. Abercrombie also sought the complete clearances and repurposing of Leith, Dalry, and Gorgie in what smacks of what some communist leaders chose to do in the Eastern Bloc countries.
Though Princes Street's architectural stock has been decimated due to fires and demolitions, we are so lucky to have such a fabulous street - and view - as the city centre.
Thank you again for doing these videos.

I always wondered why there was that un-sightly modern building with the large balcony on "Princes St."? Now I know!
Has anyone else notice whilst tony films ....he has sun...rain....and what ever else auld reekie decides to chuck at him whilst he films
That's normal Scottish weather for you. :)
We went there in late February last year, and we were wearing sneakers, in that 10 days we experienced spring, rain, sunny and also snow on our last day there in Edinburgh. Wow, that's really a Scottish weather for us. But we're glad that we got to experienced that in that short 10 days stay
Princes Street, one of the coldest streets in the World in mid winter when the wind blows directly from Siberia over the North Sea. You know your alive. But strangely I miss it :)
I'm so sad. I had flights to Edinburgh in April, but I had to cancel due to covid. I bought new flights for september, but a week ago I got an email telling that our flights were cancelled again. I bought tickets for next April. Hopefully me and my kids can finally come to your beautiful city in next year.
I called it Princess Street for years without noticing and I live here 😔
Princess street sounds cute though 🤣🤣🤣
I have heard the fact about the clock on the Balmoral Hotel before. Could it have been from you a couple of years ago?
Keep up the great videos.
Never knew that
More "likes" will help get more people to this wonderful channel! Let's all help out! Cheers.
Did Edinburgh City Council replace as they promised the Cross on the Royal Mile?
Who is the goomer on the horse?
I believe St Giles is not a cathedral...as a cathedral has to have a Bishop....it is St Giles High Kirk. Edinburgh native here...we are Protestant and Bishops belong to catholic or Church of England....
Oh that’s interesting. My whole life I have called it a cathedral.
Oh their website is stgilescathedral but the they call it a high Kirk in the first sentence. Oh I love facts like that.
Today we’re gonna be talking about sex lesson on things
Lol
I know nutten. You are my teacher lol
Send me a pm on Facebook messenger and I will send you the pictures for the pump house entrance
Can you send it through Instagram?
Great video Tony, expanding my knowledge of Edinburgh all the time thanks to you.
