Tomas had this to say about Bleed, "There’s underlying patterns that go very long. The challenge of learning that song would be equal to learning all the rest of the songs on the album combined, pretty much. I started rehearsing that in November [of 2006], recorded it in May, and still didn’t really have it down. Even in the recording phase, I could only do it part by part: I didn’t record the whole song through over and over, but instead recorded the first part ten times, the second part ten times, etcetera, so I had a lot of good takes for each part. It’s not until now that I can play the whole song through."
It is truly utterly ridiculous that he can play that at all. Much respect to Tomas
And I think Thomas had problem with tendons at the time of recording this album... 🙃
@@brankogajic9004 Not tendons, nerves. He had a herniated disk, that severely affected the way his right leg functions from a drummers standpoint. And, funfact, this concert, the one in the video, was when he was still under the worst symptoms of it! ANOTHER FUNFACT, this song had always been played towards the end of every Meshuggah live concert ever since it came out! Fuckin perspective, that is!
Playing it is one thing, but creating this beast that pushed him beyond most drummers, is beyond this world! HUGE props to this man.
It’s so insane how he mastered it to the point that he can not only play it live, but to absolutely perfection. Not a single mistake, drop in tempo, nothing. Just perfection, and that includes the rest of Meshuggah. One tiny mistake and the whole songs turns to mush, and yet they play it like soulful machines. They are unbelievable.
Ex drummer
Fun fact: he quit drumming after hearing this song
Hahah. I would also! Damn.
😂
I've listened to Meshuggah so many times, and every time I hear Bleed, I am still like... what the f*&^. It's a technical masterpiece.
hes just nuts in a good way

@Lucifer Morningstar amen. I've had ex's who tried to make me quit and "grow up". I quit them.
He had to actually RE learn drums just to play that pattern.
He started with the foot pattern then added the other polyrhythms
He’s nuts
Soo much respect to them... Titans!!!!!
"CONTROLLED CHAOS"
That's exactly how you describe the monster that is Meshuggah.
❤
it’s how you describe meshuggah and tallah.
"Im a metronome and I play the drums"
Yeah, thats Thomas Haake summed up.
Not even close
Metronomes use Thomas to keep time.
Yes. He always plays it the same. Exactly as it is on the album. Every performance with the same quality, timing and ferocity. That's what makes it so incredible.
“It’s like he has 4 different brains for each limb.” Lol awesome description
I'm a drummer and love playing to rock and metal. Been in bands ect but God damn this guy's footwork is insane, tight and consistent. I nearly put my head through the desk moshing. Awesome double kick work !!!

"...how talented do you have to be to do that?"
Wrong question, my friend. It's conceivable that some long time drummers with the full repertoire of skills could practice this long enough to get it down - the REAL question is "how talented do you have to be to WRITE that?"
It seems like most people get caught up in the performances and miss the REAL talent - that WRITING, son! That's what really pays the bills, that's what really gets the attention; being able to perform some shit like this live is just ICING baby!
[that said, I gotta get back on stage with SOMETHING - I miss it...]
Thomas haake said that he practised so much and even change his drumming technique for this specific song
Agreed 100%.. PS; I find "bleed" to be actually easier to write and play than "clockworks".. IMO, bleed is hard bc of pedals.. Any drummer who played death/black long enough will have pedal control and strong enough left leg to manage this song; its not THAT hard (relatively speaking, of course).. Clockworks has much harder polyrhythm and groove than bleed I find it impossible to play it without a mistake...
Humans would literally not pay or not paying was a choice.
The polyrhythms and changes on most parts of bleed are simpler than a lot of their other songs, but the execution is brutal. The grinding of the kick and the guitars in the intro, along with the steady 4/4 of the snare and hi hat is absolutely destructive and heavy.
Blows my mind even after the zillionth time watching it. It has to be one of the greatest singular drum performances of all time.
did you notice that besides his limbs, he's making different rhythms with his HEAD??? nuts
Once a drummer, always a drummer!
All That Remains - Six
The solo on that song is TASTY
Pretty much anything with Shannon Lucas is a drummers wet dream. That dude is so talented. Killed it with ATR and killed it harder with The Black Dahlia Murder

@@jen.g. Just a little
He is playing polyrythmic in this song, Apperantly took him about 6 months to learn this song since he had to relearn hi entire way of drumming according to himself. Awsome song!
You are correct, he wrote the entire album this song is on in MIDI first and then went back and learnt the entire album!
It took him the same amount of time to learn this song by itself as it did for the other 8 songs off ‘obZen’ combined. 😂
It's actually a polymeter. The bass drum section is 3/4, and the hands play 4/4.
just gonna say, that Critical Role hat he's rocking it is LIT 🔥🔥🔥
Didn't think I'd see CR here. I wouldn't have even noticed the hat if not for your comment. Anyway, much love Crit fam!
React to critical roles new intro and D&D beyound
If you think that was crazy, you definitely need to react to their song Clockworks. That song makes you question how many brains does he have, and if he's even human
The pattern he's playing with his feet is a "herta" pattern. It's basically a hybrid pattern of a fast pattern followed a slower pattern or vice versa. It took Tomas as much time to play Bleed smoothly as it did to write and play all the other songs on Obzen. He literally had to change the way he played his kick drums. Instead of just hammering the kick drums he had to figure out how to lean back and lightly hit the pedals to get that "roll" pattern in the herta. It took him months of practice before the band was convinced the song could go on the album and be played live...BTW, look up the band "Tallah" and check out the song "We the sad" and / or "Placenta". If you don't listen to both (and every other song they do really), your'e doing yourself a disservice. Also, make sure you read the lyrics, Justin Bonitz is a lyrical genius and possibly a serial killer possessed by some kind of alien demon witch psycho cannibal. I don't fucking know but...yea...just check it out.
This song nearly didn't make it because Tomas wasn't sure he could play it. It just speaks to his genius that he nails it live so flawlessly.
Props for the Critical Role Cap :D
Came here to say this! Bidet fellow Critter!
Ditto, good to see more Critters :-)
Bidet indeed
Bidet fellow critters
I was hoping to find a Crit Role shout-out in here somewhere, after seeing the hat.
This drummer friend of yours is not really the right kind of drummer you wanna have reacting to this song. I don't think he notices and appreciate the complex patterns and footwork in this song enough. But that's just my opinion.
Black Skeleton most drummers who notice and appreciate those complex patterns and footwork have probably already seen or heard this song 😂
Black Skeleton fucking agreed man
Agree. Ghost notes are like the least noticeable thing about Bleed.
Didn’t even notice he put socks on at the break
Black Skeleton EXACTLY!! Triplets?? Double bass hits? So many time signature changes and Hakke dropping back pockets on the time. Anyone can but a kit, but doesn’t mean you’re a drummer.
Dude, you are the Johnny Carson of reaction videos. What a great gig you have made for yourself. Love the personality, the feelings you display while listening, and mot of all the jaw drop of incredulity at what you are watching. Such a great program you have created. I am a huge fan. 9:49
The moment where Alex's brain shorts out from the sheer awesomeness of the drumming.
First of all: THANK YOU ALEX FOR FINALLY DOING THIS FOR THE HEFNERDS!
Second: Tomas Haake (HOCK-uh) is playing a polyrhythm. The reason is kind of self-explanatory: he plays rolling _32nd_ notes with his feet while his hands play the 4/4 cadence with the snare beat on 3. (You probably knew this.) Tomas is the centerpiece of the band for sure, and it's what makes Meshuggah f%$&ing legendary because the lower guitars play in time with the double bass pedals while Frederick Thordendal (lead guitarist) plays with the cadence. Meshuggah is like a heavy metal symphony, if you will. Better yet, here's a link to the "Bleed" bongo cover so you can see exactly how the double bass parses out: ua-cam.com/video/bhPaY1HEjEc/v-deo.html
Caleb Flood Actually it’s Horckeh
Mike Manghini is the one who used to play this easy before this song was even written. He used to play this in a more complex level.
@@thatsmeinthepicIt's ackshewally Horton.
You should dive into some more Lamb Of God, Chris Adler is pretty good at that ol' drum set!
chris adler is amazing
Yeah dude, "pretty good" is an understatement.
I second this! It’s too bad he is no longer in the band.
@@camdenhochgesang6554 really? I thought he was just injured or something.
Bill Munny He was. But the band had been performing with a new guy. And about a month ago they tweeted that the new guy(idk his name) was the new Lamb of God drummer. It was very nonchalant and seemed weird that they would casually announce a new drummer like that. Especially since his brother is still in the band. I’ll try to find the tweet.
"Clockworks" has such better drumming. "Bleed" is awesome and the stamina needed to play that song is crazy
Bumped in to the band regularly when I worked as bartender in Sundbyberg, Sweden. They are "regulars" and so nice to everyone. Very down to earth and always up for a laugh.

Incredibly effortless. Insane!!!
"lose his shit" most calm react to bleed ever
Some of those rhythms from around 3.45 are insane.
A lot of people will judge drumming competency on speed, but that's only a small part of the equation.
What this dude is doing is insane. He has something like 64/64 timing going on, working within that timeframe, but skipping notes/beats at times, and also some stuff that's offbeat within that 64/64, but always metronome type precision *while* also playing something more akin to standard 8/8 timing.
Probably only musicians can truly appreciate the insanity of some of this stuff. It's kinda freakish.
Poly-rhythms are just sick xD
Actually, most of their songs (according to Haake himself) are often times in a standard 4/4, but they just like to fuck with the rhythm within such a simple structure. During the verse parts and the solo, you can hear him pounding out a 4/4 beat with the snare landing on '3'.
@@BBEDrummerAK 64/64 is still sort of 4/4 though, just with more "room" for movement. The "3" in case of 64/64 is just the 48. The "fucking" with the rhythms is just utilizing the extra beats within the timeframe... what might seem like halfway between 1 and 2 in 4/4 is 12 in 64/64 for example.
The hell is 64/64?
@@onis for lack of a more articulate way to put it, same as 4/4, 8/8, etc. but each "beat" is split into 16 or 8 "sub" beats (for 4/4 and 8/8 respectively).
Please, react to JENNY by Nothing More. Theres so many "likes" under comment about Jenny.
