Even though I'm known to enjoy racing games from time to time, Midnight Club had always evaded my attention. With the massive following these games have garnered over the years, I think it's time to see what all of the fuss was about.

I miss Midnight Club. 2 had such fantastically challenging tracks and amusing cartoon characters, 3 had an amazing career progression and pacing, and LA's level of immersion is still unmatched in some aspects. Though 2's handling is a bit stiff at times and some map sections are unnecessarily cluttered, 3's tracks are a bit simple at times, and LA's tracks are sometimes basically just long straights and the progression is boring. They're all great games, but also come with their own unique ups and downs. I guess 1 also exists, but eh..

The peds in MC3 were probably given the Driver treatment due to the licensed cars. Even in the wild west of videogames that was 2005 I don't think car manufacturers were very keen on their products being portrayed as crowd killers.

small tip on mc2: if you're not sure whether a checkpoint is below or above, check the minimap; if the checkpoint is above an existing road it will be marked with a white circle around the icon

One thing that can put everything into perspective is that Midnight Club is like an edgier spiritual successor to Midtown Madness. It's a bit confusing that Angel Studio fumbled with Midnight Club 1 after their excellent Midtown Madness 2, but the Midtown's arcade racing DNA is still present up to MC:LA, which is impressive (you can even argue that GTA V's street racing still carries that same DNA).

27:57 actually, the game does tell you when the checkpoint is on a street level and when it's on an elevated area. The white outline around the circle on the minimap means the point is on an elevated area and the normal circle is on street level.

Did you know in Midnight Club 2 there are cheats that allow you to shoot machine guns, and missiles. I am not sure why this is even a thing. I used to play split screen with my brother and shoot at each other.

@@Hidden_lvl Machine guns deal so much damage they can wreck a car very quickly, even if one were to use the cheat code Immortal. Missiles create explosions that create enough force to lift cars off the ground, and when spammed you can send a bus over a railing. Used to send busses into the river back when I was a kid.

47:03 They didn't. But MC3's variants of them are fairly straight forward. Only one or two might require some staring at the map before you figure out a good route. They don't really demand map knowledge, especially since the maps themselves are fairly straight forward. While that makes the races flow faster, it does remove the satisfaction of properly learning the tracks that MC2 offered. And LA only made race layouts even easier to the point map knowledge is rarely a factor.
Also there's something that the video made me wonder: Did you ever use the map button? On d-pad up brings over a full map, which is quite useful for getting a better idea of where the checkpoints are and where they're headed. You've only ever mentioned the minimap, so I can't help but wonder this. 3 and LA bring up a pause menu map with the select too.

in MC3 the unorder races where still a thing, and to finish the career base story yu needed to do atleast 3 unorder races, 1 in atlanta, 2 in detroit, NPCs will have cars more upgraded than yours, even using cars from higher classes to keep with you (like when you get the class B cars they go with the class A that are already going at their max bcause cant get more upgrades than nitro), Rawr is better used as an offensive manuver to take other drivers than the trafic, using it to clear trafic can make actually worse bcause they go very ramdom, AIs adapt to your driving, if you drive clean they have a hard time keeping up with you (until they get the faster cars than yours) making errors like crashing trafic, objects, slamming into walls) makes them catch you fast, they will try to match your speed and max speed on your car, and only get faster when they use nitros, but the speed thing is exploitablo bcause when you go full stop you can see them all slam into their brakes, and if you have an insane acceleration better than them, they will loose more than you, is not a easy game, but after playing for years and still continue now i hav notice many things like it (and yeah, the paradox lmao XD, always baffle me how useless is the Zone for the sport bikes, on the cars is more pasable), MC3 and LA are my most played and fav games, both way diferent, glad you doing LA separated to this 3, bcause is just way diferent on how it feels, ill be waiting on that LA review

Just found your channel. The Midnight Club series is my favorite arcade racing series of all time. Having grown up a driving game fan, when the first MC game came out, it was great to have an open world racing game finally done right. Need for speed was cool but i was bored of just driving in a straight line so that series never interested me. R* needs to bring this franchise back ASAP

I remember getting Midnight club 2 on ps2 and fell in love with it, the story was sorta like f&f and each character had its own theme, car and race style, Midnight club 3 was the peak of the series and the car customization and music was just fantastic, Midnight club l.a was sort of a mixed bag, the story was alright but it lacked alot cars and bikes, the soundtrack was okay, but even with its flaws it had a huge map and it introduced livery editor which allowed you to customize cars anyway you like, all in all the Midnight club series was fun but it was sadly let go in favor of gta online

The whole thing in MC2 with the music being set when you start a race was to give a more distinct feeling of each character and car. Personality.
Sure, it's annoying if you're not into the music, but it gives the game more character than many modern streamlined/cookiecutter racing games. In fact, many of it's 'flaws' gave it more charm/distinctness.
Which is why I personally was disappointed with the mainstream direction they started to go in starting in MC3.
2 was sort of like the 'Dark Souls' of racing games. Also, you were just really good on bikes lol, or must be very different in feeling compared to on controller.

I shared your same sentiment regarding the first 2 games at first. Although, after finishing and replaying both a few times, I was able to learn the maps and races properly, as well as getting comfortable with the handling models that are stark differences from the 3rd and 4th iteration.
A couple years ago I also played through all Midnight Club Games (only previously playing the 4th game), and found that Midnight Club 2 was my favourite. Other games followed in this order: MC LA, MC Street Racing, MC 3.
Midnight Club 3 has the same problems as Underground 2 for me in that it is too repetitive. I simply got bored of the game. On top of the poor rubber banding AI and terrible frame rate it became my least favourite of the series.
I think I've just grown to like these more simplistic games where you complete an objective and just move on. I have grown tired of the constant grind in any game of any genre over the years.

There’s no reason for them to ever make another midnight club game as everything that made the midnight club series unique has been implemented into grand theft auto. There will never be another stand alone midnight club game. It would just become a DLC to GTA’s online component, the same way they did with all of their other IPs from manhunt to smugglers run.

your experience with midnight club 2's difficulty is baffling to say the least. id easily consider it the hardest racing game ive ever played, and ive played a LOT of them. the last couple racers in tokyo and the world champ are just insane and i fully came here expecting a first-timer's rant about how torturously, brutally difficult they are, to which i would gleefully revel in your pain... but you didnt even mention them! midnight club 3 isnt exactly an easy game but its a pleasant sunday drive in comparison.
but then ive never used the bikes, since i just dont enjoy riding them as much as driving a car, so i kinda ignored their existence. are they really THAT broken that they even trivialize the final boss's races? seems like it kinda ruined the game. its funny too because i also watched another review of these games where the reviewer had the opposite experience and instead ruined mc3's difficulty by using bikes the entire time and was like "wtf why is this game so easy compared to mc2"

In the nicest way possible, it seems that most of your complaints of MCII are skill based. 29:57 you can beat all LA with the base car 😂.
And all the scripted “random bullshit” turns the races more into a puzzle than a straight forward race. Half the fun was learning the track and finding short cuts.

Gran Turismo 3, Burnout 3 and Midnight Club 3 = the holy triforce of PS2 racing games in my opinion. I love Most Wanted, though the PS2 version is trash, so I always consider that a 360/PC game. My first streat racing game was Underground and I have a lot of nostalgia for it, though outside of the racing and the customization, though only being able to have one career car and the lack of cars hurt it for me. I cannot stand the racing in Underground 2, it feels slow and the tracks have very little happening in them.

    • @ChozoBrain
      @ChozoBrain Місяць тому

Gran Turismo 4 isn't fun to me, and even though it can be played in HD on the system, the textures and details on track are horrible to compensate. There's also an insane amount of filler in my opinion, I get it, the more the better for some people, though I like to 100% games and I like them to eventually end. So this is all just my opinion lmao.

10:55 They managed to do circuits in Midtown madness, so no, the devs knew what they were doing, and these sort of races are pretty good for using the knowledge you've got from exploring the map. That's why map knowledge is so important.
