this is what has been missing from racing games for so long. Forza horizon is so boring because you can just buy any car you would ever want then v12 swap it and drive of for 10 minutes and then you never touch it again.

Those last few minutes really hit home for me. As a kid, my family wasn't well off so I would end up getting magazine demo disks from my parents neighbors and would replay the demos over and over. Imagining what the full game was like. Now as an adult I've gone back and bought all of the full games and played through them all. It's amazing the memories and comfort games can bring you. TDEoD and TD 2002 are two games that did that for me.
Anyways, I'm glad that you're in a better place now. Life doesn't have a manual and we have to make what we want of it. Thank you for all the great content and I'll be looking forward to your next video.

I watched it, and i appreciate the points raised. Mostly about Platinum mod, and some, not really. Lol
Thing is, quality part, work is being done, given our capabilities to make it better. Because as a matter of fact, Platinum was, mostly, a one-person work. Now that i have more people willing to help, and actually doing it so, working together to improve it further.
And i understand that with more cars, you don't get that attached to your cars. It makes sense. And i will keep that in mind, to maybe found a way to improve it, because to me, i still get attached to my cars in the game, lol, as a matter of fact, i have an F355 that i have over 5000km driven. Lol
Tl;dr - Thanks for the points, i will keep them in mind for the next update. (Not a promise they will be sorted, but i will look for it)

I will never forget how in the summer of 2009 I used to come over to my older friend who would bully me, but would let me look at him playing TDU and I could even suggest what cars he should buy. Similar nostalgia, I was 7 at the time, without any friends or special interests or hobbies, all I had were cars, books and video games. Luckily I managed to make friends and escape from my hometown. I don't wish to go back to that era, but I would love to revisit the game and smell the hot plastic smell coming from the back of this boxy old tv. I played the PS2 version a couple of years ago and I actually just finished TDU2 on PS3 a couple of days ago.
I liked both of them, while I was playing them, I wondered to myself "What would've been like if I had played this as a kid?"
I always liked the idea of long events, I liked doing Gran Turismo endurance events or similar events like those that could take like an hour to beat. Having a large map would've probably not only impressed me, but I would've tried to drive all over the map, trying to discover every road I could
Unfortunately I have responsibilities now and as much as I would've liked to uncover all roads in both games, I just had to concentrate on other important things and wanting to play other games.

Kac, that last part hit me differently.
It wasn't that I could relate to what you said but it just made me realise how much life I have ahead of me (I'm 16). I sat on my bed for a good 20 minutes, realising how I don't know what the fuck I'm doing with my life. It wasn't a sad thought, I actually laughed a little because I thought maybe I'm overthinking my life's choices for someone my age. It's just a confusing thought because I don't know what to take away from it.
I feel like my life will have a way of figuring itself out though. 5 years ago I seemed like an even more clueless person than who I am now. Maybe in 5 years' time I'll have more of my life figured out. Not all of it, but hopefully more.
Thank you for making it to the end of this long stream of thoughts.
Also, great review. It was worth the long wait.

It's comforting that you say that the depiction of Oahu feels pretty genuine. I made this experience in TDU2, because i had been to Ibizia several times, and yes, it felt JUST RIGHT. I don't know if someone pointed this out. If you play TDU with the Online components enabled AT ALL, Cops won't spawn. They're permanently disabled unless you're playing a single player event/single player free roam. The reason they work in the 360 port as shown is the servers are down so it can't enable the features that turn cops off. As you see in the video, getting 3 stars/badges simply gives you your current fine amount and resets the counter. I play the PC port with the online off because I don't know how to mute people, cops work fine.
tl;dr - cops work fine on all the versions, just play offline or no cops spawn.

    Holy cow... fifteen years.
Look at my username. That is NOT a coincidence. This is where I fell head over heels in love with the AC (Shelby) 427 Cobra, even if that specific car was never in MY game, because I played WELL over 200 hours without ever connecting to the internet once, and all of them on a standard-def TV.
My adoration for factory stock cars, and cars as a pleasure, started with this game. Hell, I'm literally saving up to buy a replica/kit version of the 427 Cobra right now.

I played for the first time the PS2 version of TDU almost 13 or 12 years ago, and then for 6 straight years back when I had my good old PS2(RIP, gone but never forgotten), no wonder game enticed me as much as this one did, the driving, the feeling, all of the immersion with the cars and the game world...No other PS2 game had that.
And let me tell you: I could literally do nothing else but just pickup a basic, bare bones, shitbox car like that Saturn or the Mustang GT, and drive all over the island, yeah I had all the other supercars, sports cars, luxury and concept cars, but it was precisely the low end shitboxes that had my most attention.
In fact, my favorite car was the Mercedes Benz SLK Kompressor that you drive with the top down and has 7 gears for some reason...I could never get enough of that car, I had a garage filled with all possible colors, interiors and wheel variations of it.
As a matter of fact, this was the first 3D racing game game that I ever played that had the cockpit view...In fact I distinctly remember being blown away the most two times with game:
First when I noticed that game actually a cockpit view(not many PS2 games could afford the luxury), and second when I pressed select for the first time and saw the world map...Fucking 60 MILES of open road for me to explore made fucking excited.
Also the whole points you made about car ownership, they felt equally special in the PS2 version...Honestly, that's the kind of thing that not even Gran Turismo could ever hope to do!
My only two real complaints of the PS2 version are the lack of true shadows even for static objects, and the lack of manual transmission...It really surprised how they blew that up, a racing game without manual transmission just felt wrong back then and it continually feels wrong today.
Also, thanks to the cockpit view of that game, when it came the time for me to drive a car for the first time, I knew exactly how to operate a steering wheel, the side mirrors and beware of the car dimensions on the road.
Either way, my PS2 died and I upgraded to a PS3 and never played this game again, but the memories I have of it are still ingrained in my mind and I'll probably never forget them.
This game is that much memorable to me...Which is why I can barely contain myself for TDU Solar Crown.

There's this whole book written by James Paul Gee (2003) on how good video games are good at teaching, and in one of the sections, he mentions the concept of projective identity (which in short is pretty much that, your projections upon an avatar) and how important it is for a player's motivation to create that identity type alongside your real and virtual ones.
The thing is, Gee really only focuses on avatar-focused games in this section, like (MMO)RPGs, but I've always thought other genres could easily be adopted in this regard, so to see the effect the game had on you is pretty cool
edit: horizon bit redundant, you bring it up.

I don't think it's easy to explain just how mind-blowing this game was 15 years ago. It certainly wasn't perfect, or terribly polished, but the graphical fidelity, open-world multiplayer (years before it became the norm) and the sheer scale of the island felt like something that was truly next-gen. It's a feeling I seldom get from games nowadays.

Brilliant review. Even though Test Drive Unlimited is an amazing game, it does have some issues such as the map looking incomplete in some areas, and AI that at times don't follow the rules of the road causing accidents, but that is only really an issue on the PC version of the game. I can't wait to see what your views are on the second game.

I'm not one to usually comment on a UA-cam video, but my god. That was for sure one of the best game reviews I've watched. It was very pleasant to hear your experience with and surrounding the game. I'm new to your channel but I'll be sure to stick around. I haven't even played this game (I have played TDU2 though) and you made me feel some of the emotions that you were talking about. Sadly, I don't have an Xbox 360 or PS2, but if I did, you would've just sold me a game! Great video :)

This was such a great commentary on this game. I played the heck out of this while in highschool even though the game was already 4-5 years old by that time. I had the PSP port and the PC version, then my buddy had the Xbox 360 version which we played often at his house. Many great memories with this title and older Test Drives.

This game was literally THE reason why I bought an Xbox 360. It was also the first time I'd ever had the money to actually buy myself a brand new console and not a 2nd-hand one, so I spent £330 to get a 360 bundled with TDU and Deadrising and it was the best money I've ever spent. I fell in love with both games. Later I brought the official Xbox steering wheel and TDU just became the *best thing ever!!* I spent so many hours just driving around!
I still say to this day that it's the best 'driving' game I've ever played. Not the best 'racing' game, but if you just wanted to cruise around Hawaii in a nice car with some tunes on, it was amazing.
Also, I remember that you could rip music CDs on to your Xbox hard drive, and if you added the words 'TEST DRIVE UNLIMITED' at the start of the album name, it would actually show up in the game as if it were a CD in your car stereo. I'm pretty sure it also displayed the track info on the actual in car radio too! I think it worked with up to 3 albums, so you could actually put a selection of your own music into the game. It was an amazing feature before the days of having Spotify on your Playstation!

  • @TommyCrosby

I never really liked this game racing mechanics, but I played so much of it just to "feel" like I was actually driving exotic cars in Hawaii. It was a game changer to actually feel like a driving experience outside racing.

I've never played any Test Drive games. Ever. I've always heard good things about Test Drive Unlimited and I constantly promised myself for the past few years that someday I'd get round to playing it but I just... haven't. Yet your personal experiences with it really, really resonated with me and frankly unlocked memories that I almost managed to forget about.
I get what you meant, Kacey. Racing games especially have always been portals into another time in my life; and while that has meant having to work hard to remove the stains of trauma I associated with my favourite games, I do hold that deeply special to myself. From Midnight Club 2 getting me into DIY electronics and synthesizers to Street Legal Racing Redline making me realize the true meaning of the phrase "change the process, change the outcome" much before I heard Mick Gordon ever utter it.
I forgot that TDU did hold that memory for me too. I remember being in high school, 10th or 11th grade (whatever that may be called in the US) and we had a 'multimedia' class I had opted into that was essentially about the basics of HTML and Photoshop content creation. One of my classmates used to always, *always*, without fail, launch a pirated copy of TDU on one of the computers (TDU was already a decade old by this point) and get as much progress as he could in before our teacher had to force him to Alt-F4 out. This went on for over a year, until one day I came to multimedia class and... there was no O'ahu on his screen. It was the first time I had been just a little too late to class and missed his playthrough.
I had done something very stupid later that day, and while I remember that specific thing all too well, I never actually even thought about this buried memory until your video today. I'm not gonna sit here and pretend that not seeing him play TDU was anything other than a mild annoyance; it sure as shit wasn't the reason I did what I did, but... I just wanted you to know that you help us, your audience, unlock some deeply personal memories too with your own memoirs.
Keep up the good work, Kacey!

TDU is one of my favorite racing games of all time. I played the hell out of it on my PSP back in 2007. Endlessly entertaining. I have always loved this game. I played it on PS2 first, and on PSP the most. As I recall, both of those versions were released after the 360 version and thus contained the beautifully mid-2000s Hawaii-themed electronic soundtrack by Gavin Parker. I still listen to those songs to this day. This game has everything I love aesthetically from the early-mid 2000s, combined with the real sense of home and car ownership.

Great video! Really well put together. I love TDU, played it a ton as a kid, the atmosphere and feeling of "living the life" really drew me in, and I still love it to this day. The Crew was good but nothing has gotten close to TDU since - I'm looking forward to TDU Solar Crown, interested to hear more about it. Really hope it's more in line with TDU 1 than something like The Crew or Forza Horizon (which are not bad games, not at all, but not quite like TDU).

I dont have much to say about the first but I really like the sequel. One tip: as soon as you start the game, crank the controller sensitivity all the way down (or up because the dial is inverted, the right side is less sensitive, the left side is more sensitive). The big criticism of the game is that the controls are too touchy, doing this you can properly enjoy it. The physics are far from perfect, but doing this makes the game much more manageable than the original setting.

I downloaded Test Drive Unlimited Platinum a year ago on my old laptop, a year ago. It was so good and I loved how it was more driving focused than racing focused. I really loved both TDU and TDU2, I still have the limited Steelbook Release of TDU sitting right next to me. Out of the two I do personally prefer TDU2 over TDU1. It had its own share of issues but I simply loved that Eden Games added to the "Life Experience" in TDU2 by giving you the option to customize and decorate the houses and added way more options for customizing your character. It was kinda meh when seen from a pure racing game perspective but I loved it for its "Simulating the live of the Rich" qualities. Also the smoothed out roads in TDU2 made driving around way more pleasant compared to TDU1.

As a person who has and still is working on mods for the game I gotta say it's way more stable than anything I've ever got to touch from that era. The glitches with traffic and such do happen every now and then, the online lacks features (although I believe the servers were back before the video came out), but it runs stable, doesn't crash, doesn't softlock, and Platinum mod still follows all the attention to the detail the original game used to have. By the way, it's development isn't over, there's another big update on the way, and I'd love if you gave it another crack when it comes out, I hope you'll change your mind a bit about the PC version.
By the way, play the Hardcore mode cause I didn't see you doing that in the video - it's almost like you didn't play the game correctly :D

This was also excellent on PSP/PS2 version which to me is a bit more streamlined arcade and racing focused than PC and 360 version.
