    Thanks so much...I have been wanting to grow garlic in my yard, in southern California, since we enjoy eating it so much. funny thing, is I have been growing "society garlic" in my planter areas for the ornamental beautiful purple flowers, for many years, and we even enjoy eating them along with nasturtium's in our salads often. They are delectable and look pretty too! TFS Lil hugs

    Thanks for video about planting garlic. I just planted a small patch. I really like your cardboard method but we have a really big problem with slugs here and they like to hide under cardboard. I think that I will mulch with leaves and temporarily cover with a tarp during winter. Good reminder about the birds in the spring; I’ll need to use row cover then so that they don’t yank up the garlic sprouts.

    • @MyFamilyGarden

      I have issues with slugs but I don't think it's anything to worry about with plants like garlic and onions. Leaves under the tarp will be perfect for the worms to do their magic!!!

      Walaikum salaam, for good quality eggs you'd need to give them access to at least a square metre of space per bird, and regularly wormed. They need about 120g of feed each per day, mixed with grit and fresh water

    • @crpth1

      What is unbelievably shocking after reading and practicing "do nothing" growing. Is to observe farmers putting tractors/trailer and the likes, on the fields weighing in several tons! And do it by "tradition" a minimum of twice a year! Compacting the soil to levels never seen before. Anyway the manufacturers who sold them the tractors. Will quickly sell them soil rippers that goes deeper and deeper... That's been the tendency since the 30's. Heavier equipment to destroy things faster than on the previous year!
      Farming greed and destruction, while building desertification, as been a really difficult tendency to reverse! The drought events on desert and other semi arid regions in California and elsewhere. Might, finally, light the bulb, that tells them that doing that and grow water hungry crops (like cotton or alfalfa) in the desert IS NOT a good idea! Sarcastic detail those crops are not even for direct Human feed. Mostly are for export to other countries! LOL 😂

    • @MrBilalmussa
      @MrBilalmussa 4 роки тому +2

      Prevents weeds and insulates soil. the best bit of use this approach is that its cheaper than using the land scraping fabric. I have grown garlic from local shop bought garlic. I would advise that you purchase it from the small independent shops and buy it loose. Avoid those that are prebagged. You can also ask the shop keeper for unwanted cardboard so that you can get everything from one place.

    Just to let you know that I just harvested 200 garlic bulbs (2021) using this method. The bed was weed-free for the entire growing season and the garlic bulbs and clove sizes are the biggest I have produced in this garden. My bed is a no-dig 1m x 3m and I went for the high-density growing option in September 2020. I also used this method on my over winter onion bed and harvested hundreds of spring onions for months, and along with the garlic, I have harvested 50 full-size onions. Just to mention that when I put my cardboard down, I weighed it down with bricks and large stones first, then let the rain soak it which allowed the sellotape to come off easily and made cutting the holes in it a breeze. Once I planted the cloves, I dressed the top of the bed with homemade compost that had lots of big bits in it like wood chips. This weighed the cardboard down. I did have some midwinter issues when the neighbourhood fox tried to dig up the bed and this caused some of the cardboard to lift, but it was solved with more mulch on top. I will be doing this again in Autumn. Thanks for this video!

    This is exactly what I’ve done with my garlic bed. It’s both a cheap weed barrier plus a great anti cat digging device. My kitty has a nasty habit of seeing any expanse of bare soil as a convenient kitty toilet. Wilko do cheap seed garlic as well (about £2-3) for 2 or 3 bulbs. Might be worth looking at if u want to broaden the varieties you grow. Good to know the supermarket stuff grows just as well tho. I planted a lovely stripy variety from Sainsburys, so hopefully should turn out some nice bulbs 😊

    Another great video. A quick question though please. How do you ensure the cardboard doesn't blow away during winter winds? Wouldn't a small amount of mulch on top of the cardboard do the job of holding it down and also help the cardboard to rot a bit faster ?

    • @MyFamilyGarden
      @MyFamilyGarden  4 роки тому

      Once the cardboard gets wet it will wheigh itself down somewhat, but you're right adding something to the top will keep it wheighed down.

    Salam bro, do you guys make lasan (garlic and bajra roti) during the cold months? You'll need your garlic to be around 8-10 weeks old. We've planted some already but will be clearing the bed this weekend so that we can prep it as you've done above both in our raised bed and a large planter that was home to tomatoes earlier. What companion plant would you recommend alongside the garlic?Bilal

      It doesn't really matter that much, but garlic from china or eastern europe is good because it's grown in a similar climate. I recommend you change to B&W newsprint / newspaper. The glues in the cardboard are not likely desirable soil amendments for food plants. You indeed have a grand concept - maybe you can get the University, or other, to analyze the soil. In the interim, switch to overlapped tiling using damp newspaper. Don’t use any pages with color ink - unless you know what’s in the ink. I expect you’ll be able to create a newspaper mat and punch holes in it quicker than your hole cutting, too.

    Though hapen not as easily accessible as in the country, or even then , so much these days, my Dad used to have a couple of tractor bucketfuls of straw held farm manure brought by a local farmer every other year or so which he swore by for his gardening/growing intentions. He'd always relied upon kitchen fed compost patch additions to the soil before then - well rotted stuff from the heap base.
