  • What Mulch Is Best For Vegetable Gardens - Winter Garden Care, Best mulch for the garden, how to mulch the garden
    Keeping the soil covered is really important to build soil fertility so that it is in a good state to produce time and time again. We discuss the best mulch to use for vegetable gardens rather than just using compost as mulch. Mulching with compost is not always the best solution. When you mulch your garden it's best to use mulch that will buid fertility in the garden but also protect the garden soil.
    It's imprtant when mulching the garden to use mulch correctly, so many people use compost as mulch but it's not always the best option. Using cover crops and green manure is an amazing way to build soil fertility.

    I have a mixture of compost and Strulch on the beds that are cleared. I have decided to leave my squash plants to rot down over winter and then mulch with home made compost in the spring. The problem I had with covering everything over with cardboard last winter was a glut of slugs and snails in the spring and early summer as it seemed to be an ideal breeding ground for them 😡

    • @MyFamilyGarden
      @MyFamilyGarden  4 роки тому +1

      I had to look up strulch but from the looks of it sounds like it will do a really good job. Slugs are an issue, it helps by getting more wildlife like frogs and birds into the garden

      Just to add to Mothin's comment - yes the cardboard provides a habitat for slugs and snails but a way you can deal with that is to regularly turn the cardboard and remove and kill any that you find - "The problem is the solution" - covering is still better for the soil life than leaving it bare

    Hello Mothin ( Sorry, I think that’s your name). I have just started a new allotment plot, not large but enough to get a big area set up with wood chips for growing spuds next year. I have just completed digging several beds and clearing weeds, brambles etc. I have done everything that you say I shouldn’t, I have used a tiller to break it all down to a fine filth. My intention was to leave it all for the winter to work on. You say no, I am thinking of getting a load of Green Manures now I have watched this. I did want to put fresh woodchip because I have no compost available.
    Is it worth just sowing Green Manure and not put down wood chip. Very confused now.

    • @MikeJRe2ipi
      @MikeJRe2ipi 4 роки тому +1

      Maybe cover your growing areas with cardboard or mypex to avoid the soil capping.

    • @MyFamilyGarden
      @MyFamilyGarden  4 роки тому +3

      Hi Graham. I think what you've done
      Sounds good so far especially with things like brambles, it's good to get the roots out. Unless you were going to plant anything right now. I'd now sow it with green manures, you can get a winter mix then in early spring cut them back and mulch over the top

    • @garyfinch8267
      @garyfinch8267 4 роки тому +1

      Covering the soil with anything is better than leaving it exposed to the elements over winter - fresh wood chip will rob the soil of nitrogen where it touches the soil but if you can get it deep enough it will also begin to compost down - really important that you dont dig wood chip into the soil - Bill Mollison even recommended a 'stone' mulch if nothing else was available

      That's another reason why I don't like it as mulch! You know me always counting those beans

    • @karmelicanke

      @@MyFamilyGarden When I've used wood chips, I liberally apply nitrogen, granular or liquid urea to aid its decomposition without robbing the crop beneath of nutrients. It's great to speed up a compost pile of especially wood chips but watch out it doesn't heat up and start on fire. Liquid nitrogen [ counting those beans ] is provided free from householders!

    Hi, new gardener here. I turned my awful border some weeks ago before I found out its bad. My soil is so lumpy and hard . I'm in the process of making compost at the moment . My husband won't allow me to put cardboard over the soil (for aesthetic reasons), what should I do? Should I ask for neighbours grass cuttings for now? I'm on such a tight budget.. Thanks for your time

    This is a really good video. You've clearly researched the science as well as having trial and error experience of what you are recommending. It's refreshing to see someone thinking for himself about climate variables and not just repeating what many others say is the "right" way to do something.

  • @BalticHomesteaders

    Think it's important to say that if compost is all you have and/or due to your climate all you can use then actually it's perfectly OK rather than bare soil. Compost may well have some nutrients washed out if you have a lot of rain but it also can contribute a lot of biology to the soil including food for worms etc that gives an equal benefit to good soil. Remember that plant ready nutrients can come from life cycles and natural activity of microorganisms in healthy soil.

    This is the first year over wintertime i use a layer of compost(4 inches) an cover this with 4 inches of fresh cut grass using a scythe. Normaly i would use woodchips, but here in germany you have to pay for woodchips. What do you think, is 4 inches of fresh cut grass enough? it compress very soon i guess.
    In general i am relatively new in mulching and get very skeptical views from grand parents, parents and neighboors because of no digging :D

      The grass even though it compacts it will still protect the compost and feed the soil, you could cover the grass with cardboard or fallen leaves for added protection.

    I have never used shop bought compost to mulch my soil. Infact in 20 years of gardening and digging the ground I have never used any mulch. However the soil does get a good layer of manure every few years, Horse or cow manure is best for outdoor beds. This would be spread over the garden over the late autumn which means it will be ready to dig in during early spring.
