    That is really good tip, how I have started was to go in the woods to get hummus and add nitrogen and carbon to feed that humus with garden waste. I have figured how many buckets I needed for the beds and repeat the process until all the beds are covered. To keep that fertility, repeat the process every winter. As a backyard gardener, we must add layers to our beds over and over.

    • @MyFamilyGarden
      @MyFamilyGarden  4 роки тому +2

      It's a good way of bringing in humus and biodiversity, the worry is if everyone did that we'd decimate the woods in no time

    • @bob.hudson
      @bob.hudson 4 роки тому +2

      @@MyFamilyGarden Absolutely valid concern, for us it is a principle when we take we also give in return. We plant several trees a year made from cuttings or seeds.

    Good pointers here thank you, a couple of years ago I decided I wanted to ditch my bit of lawn and make deeper flower beds, I piled up the dug up lawn in a corner of the garden, upside down and forgot about it, I have recently revisited the pile and it's now a lovely mound of pure loam, this will be going in my greenhouse this year, also I find that if I leave a bag of shredded woodchips over winter, by the spring I have a nice mulch which is usually full of valuable mycelium, healthy and good for trees, shrubs etc :)

    2 points:
    1) careful using garden soil in pots, particularly long term pots; those worms will eat the plant roots and are not suitable for long-term potting soil solutions. even if you don’t see any there could still be eggs.
    2) I *do* agree that kitchen scraps buried *can* be good; the challenge, however, will be vermin trying to dig them up to eat!

    Well done, another excellent video. Fortunately I bought sufficient compost from my allotment trading hut before the shutters came down so I will be fine this growing season. However, I adapt your method when growing potatoes in 30 litre tubs as I mix my own garden soil with my home made compost, add some slow release fertiliser and then fill the top couple of inches of the tub with multi purpose compost to keep weeds down.
    By the way, I have just planted out in my propagator the first piece of ginger I cut off from the mother, following your advice and there are at least three more plants sprouting.

    Should be noted you might need to feed nitrogen mix more heavily to the compost substitutes with more brown ingredients

      Thank you i did mention in the video a couple of times that these dilutions will cause a loss of nutrients and will need to be fed, there will be afollow up on making feed from ordinary things growing in the garden

      sand helps with drainage and makes the growing medium more penetrable by the roots

    By collecting the leaves from under the hedge, aren't you depriving the plants of nutrients they need, so you'll have to add compost to them?🤔

    • @MyFamilyGarden
      @MyFamilyGarden  2 роки тому

      Very good question, the aim is not to make it a regular thing or on a large scale, but use it in case of an emergency, because as you say there will be nutrient deficiencies cause if done regularly but also damage to insect habitat.

      the key is adding lots of organic matter, the easiest way is laying kitchen scraps or manure on the surface and allowing worms to work it in like in this video ua-cam.com/video/DJpUVZyy06Q/v-deo.html

    Do you know how I can break down clay soil? Thanks or the advice

    • @MyFamilyGarden
      @MyFamilyGarden  4 роки тому +2

      Lots and lots of organic matter and the worms will arrive the work it all in. You can plant sacrificial crops with long roots like radishes that break the cleat then leave them in the ground to rot.

    the type of sand you use is important, monty, i always stick to river washed sand . not the yellow builders sand. .................brian

      Absolutely agree. It's the only one I had access to, had a couple of buckets spare, I normally used sharp sand.
