A old man who has a allotment once said he put tomato 🍅 seeds in a flask with two used teabags and the water temperature was 20 degrees centigrade,, and then 24 hours later he put them into pots of soil with a lid into the boiler cupboard and they always worked out 👍🏼👍🏼 great video

Great idea, I've always used my boiler to germinate my seeds but this year managed to get some heat mats, the advantage has been consistent heat so helps germination

I’ve got , big Jim, Piri Piri, African Birds Eye, pepper Anaheim, and a few saved seeds from Aldi chilli 🌶. I saved some basket of fire seeds too. They took forever to germinate but came good. Huge amount of chillies on them. Frozen them whole. Should last a long time. Thought I’d try a few different ones this time. Giving my son a few from each pack as he has a sunny kitchen windowsill he has been growing different chillies on. My new greenhouse is going up as soon as the weather improves. So I want to start my heat lovers in the house. I look forward to your videos about what to plant month by month. I’m in South Wales, have 4 raised beds, and 7hens and one rooster. Thanks Sue

Love the tea tip, never heard that one before! Passing on a tip for you is that willow water (i.e. soak willow branches chopped int i inch pieces in water for 3 days or so) acts like natural rooting hormone for cuttings and also helps reduce stress for plants when transplanting them. Was bit worried I over brewed my tea but I was amazed at how successful this was for me - all my chilli and aubergine seeds have germinated on day 7 in my heated propagator (just a small cheap one). Also tried with cauliflower seeds which remarkably began to germinate after just 4 days. Hopefully they’ll do well. Thanks again and love your channel.

My horticulturist aunt, who lived in the south of England (I'm in there north of Scotland!) used to plant her tomato seeds at this time of year. I've not been brave enough to start mine quite so early, but I'll try it with the chillies!

I'll be planting tomatoes next week ish, otherwise we end up with loads of green tomatoes at the end of the season. With leggy plants you can plant them deep or take cuttings and root them

I soaked left over dry birds eye chilli seeds in Epsom salt and planted them and not knowing if they’ll grow. They’re growing and on heated mat. I’ll try the tea soaking method , much cheaper 😃
I set mine and put the pots on an old baking tray and put that on top of my Fridge Freezer.
They'll get plenty of heat from there

You piqued my curiosity from the later video, so I hopped over to see this one. Very interesting about soaking seeds in tea to mimic what happens in nature when seeds are spread by birds, (and other animals, I suppose). I think I will give it a try!

Nice to hear someone pointing out that plastics aren't the problem. But people only using them once is. Until the throw away society wakes up we will always have a problem. I work for a local authority in, believe it or not, the waste and recycling department whose head of service removed all plastic containers in the kitchen of the offices but still had job tickets printed off that contained one or two lines of text on a A4 piece of paper! Have a look at the carbon footprint for the 'woven ' shopping bags.
A lot of issues with modern society is that people waste too much when we could get so many uses out of it.

Nah then lad, you sound like you come from near me in South Yorkshire. I usually set my chillis off on heat mats, but like you sometimes I forget to label them. Last year my mate ended up with a reaper, and I ended up with some Apaches instead of vice versa. Good vid, I have subbed and belled.

I think they'd grow, that's basically what I planted, all the seeds in the cups were from chillies that I took the seeds from and dried

MFG great post i start my seeds under 25 watt led the mrs goes mad with me every lamp in the house is used but like you no heated starters but it works great ATB

Soak for about a day ish in like warm tea. The biggest problem with lack of germination is heat, the soil needs to be 20c for good germination

Once they are soaked,let them dry a bit on the surface before sowing.
Otherwise they can get ridden by fungai.
This apply to all kind of seed.
May be not in your kind of climate,but here in Spain is common issue,so,precaution would be advisable.

Here we have this kind os issue even with comercial seeds,wich here,come perfectly clean and treated against fungai.

Hi there Thank you for the great videos! At what temperature do you keep yourchilies and peppers? I have xtra light for 15hours and keep my tomatoes/peppers/chilies at around 20 degrees celcius. Do I need to put chili/pepper in a warmer environment?
Ps I used the-soaking for a few xtra peppers and chilies =and my parsley :)
To germinate them I keep them at about 22c then once they've germinated they go under the lights until they're big enough to sit in front of the window

Thank you so much for this video. I grew a Trinidad Moruga scorpion last year which grew into a 4ft bush. I will be trying your method to see if I can grow a few from the seeds I harvested. Should anyone be interested they are the hottest pepper I have ever tasted. I do have a greenhouse but it's not heated, any idea when I can put them out into the greenhouse?
I'm growing them for the first time this year. I think it'll be at least may time before they can go out

i saved seed from a thai Dragon.. but..i ended up getting like 4 different sorts of chillis.. i even got a white one. but. they were nothin like the thai Dragon i cant remember if they were f1 hybrid..? they were from suttons seeds.

Hey Mothin- do you sterilize your compost? We get mold flies in ours that hatch indoors. Just wondering if unsterilized compost makes a difference.
Hi Phil, I've never sterilised my compost. I don't have any stats to back it up but just from my gut, I like to add some garden soil in with my compost so the plants get used to the microbes/climate in their final destination

I remember some ten years ago when I helped to prep jalapeño-like collies for my aunts birthday in Mauritius. We must have prepped about a kilo of these things, in which we needed to cut the chilli in half, then scrape out the seeds. Being the idiot English guy I didn’t wear gloves.
By the time we prepped everything my hands were pretty hot. My aunt told me to wipe my hands with oil, then I used washing up liquid to wash the oil off. It must have got all that oil-soluble capsaicin deep into my pores. I remember holding my hands out of the car wind as we drove down the road. It must have taken hours for the pain to subside.
Moral of the story: don’t be a fool and listen when you’re told to wear gloves when cutting hot chillis.
I like New Zealand spinach, but it is really difficult to germinate- will definitely try the tea soaking method!
I've never tried New Zealand spinach, but i have grown malabar spinach quite successfully in sifted multi purpose compost on a sunny windowsill

Just watched your video and I found it very helpful.
I started growing my chillies in Feb last year in a heated propegator and I lost most of them. They started to germinate quickly and I was super excited, but they got leggy and I left them hoping they’d survive , but sadly they went to chilli heaven.
I live in Scotland, did I start to early, should I have used grow lights, shall I leave them till April?
Any help is greatly appreciated . Also is vermiculite and perlite recommended?

I started my chillies in December and used grow lights to keep them going, during the short days hey really need the additional light. Because the need a long growing season I'll be starting them this year mid november/early december as most of them only started ripening in september. Either vermiculite or perlite will help make the potting soil more 'fluffy' and easy for the roots to penetrate

Look for patio varieties you've got a milder climate than me, i've managed to grow basket of fire, nigel outdoor green, aji lemons, hungarian hot wax successfully outside
@@MyFamilyGarden Thank you. I've just ordered some Basket of fire, Aji lemons, Super Chilli. And I've got some reaper seeds that I'll have another crack at. Tried year before last, and had ok size plants, but only a few pods, and they didn't reach full size or ripen properly.
Reapers will do better in their second year. The hotter ones will need a greenhouse or conservatory
