    When I park my car for a few days or weeks I don’t lose any diesel and so don’t lose any money. ICE = 1, EV = 0.

    I do a daily commute of about 70 mile round trip 3-4 days a week. It's a pretty even mix of town, country road and dual carriage way. I charge to 90% and charge once a week at work. It lasts 4 days of commuting at 70 miles a day so that's 280 miles. Add in a couple of school runs and I'm getting pretty close to 300 miles.
    But on longer runs that you are doing.

      Good to hear, and good for people to know there are good experiences as well as bad. You are using your car the best way; short journeys with home charging. The real problem lies with longer journeys and the impact of cold weather and heavy rain, and while cold weather impact is well known, the effect on range from heavy and persistent rain is less well known. Put the poor network together with weather impacted range, then the cars become local cars, which is great if that's all you do. Enjoy your car.

      @@Dreadpirateflappy Here is my problem with this. This is a tester, who presumably makes a living out of testing cars, so of course he knows every trick. If he did this with his car, that he bought with his cash, then I might pay more attention. Few people buying EV's know all the tricks, and you have to find out the hard way. It is also becoming very evident that in the UK the network is poor and not improving at the rate it needs to to keep pace with the growth that is happening. The result is that used values of EV's in the UK have plumeted, and the rate of purchase has dropped significantly. No waiting lists now and all manufacturers are offering considerable incentives to buy one of these over priced shopping trolleys.

    I drove to Staffordshire from Southampton last weekend - started with 100% and had done 173 miles when range clicked down to 50%. Total journey used 54% (187 miles). Topped up using a rapid charger and return journey was very similar so you can get, on this basis, up to 350 miles on a full battery for motorway journeys within the speed limit. I will not get anything near this figure around town, though, as you say.

    First of all I'm pleased to hear that your wife has recovered from her illness and wish you and she a happy and healthy New Year!
    Appreciate your honest real world experience of the i4. The efficiency you're getting is very disappointing given the cost of the car. The fact you're getting such poor efficiency doing what you call the local running around is really quite surprising. Normally this type of driving would give the most efficient results for an EV.
    I've got a Hyundai Kona (64kW), which Hyundai claim is able to do 300 miles on a full charge ..... and it actually does.
    I've had it for 18 months and during that time covered just over 16,000 miles. I've achieved 300 miles of range during the summer months and 260 miles during the winter months. I do use maximum regen and don't have a particularly heavy right foot, but have been very pleased with the efficiency of the car.
    I have to admit the i4 is a fantastic looking car and I'm sure the interior is excellent but I'm pretty sure most people looking at getting an EV will be focussed on real world range. This makes your video very helpful for anyone looking at the i4.

    • @HighlandRider
      @HighlandRider  2 роки тому

      Very interesting about your Kona. The i4 is a fabulous car and just home charging even with the lower efficiency it is fine, if a little more expensive than my original sums had the return. The lower range combined with the poor network is the killer for me. I also saw an article in The Metro, shared with me, that there were queues in the South East of England for chargers as people travelled more extensively, with Tesla particularly hit hard, presumably down to their sales success

  • @lowelindroth7053
    @lowelindroth7053 2 роки тому +3

    Thanks for the video, and welcome to the world of EV's. This is how it works FOR ALL EV'S. Its not really related to BMW i4, more a general experience from going from fossil fuel car to EV. You will only achieve WLTP range driving without stopping summertime (not too hot), in "normal" speed

    • @HighlandRider
      @HighlandRider  2 роки тому +2

      I always suspected that and I am learning to live happily with the reality

  • @alladin1314
    @alladin1314 2 роки тому +8

    Well, this is to be expected. You get the WLTP range in good conditions only. The car needs to use extra energy for cabin climate, and for battery conditioning during cold days. ICE cars use exhaust heat to heat up the cabin, while EV use the main battery. If you do 5 short trips in a day, with 1-2 hours between them (enough for the cabin and battery pack to cool) - you will have terrible efficiency - since the car needs to use energy to heat the cabin 5 times (domestic driving). Keep your EV plugged in during winter, and use the myBMW app to heat up the cabin before leaving - while the car is plugged so it doesn’t use the battery for that - you will get better range, and if you keep your battery between 60 an 80% SoC - it will last forever.

    Very interesting, and thanks for the insight.
    I was under the impression, that EVs don't like motorway trips, as there is very little regen, but lots of "pushing through the air at speed". You would have though that local trips with lots of regen, in "B" mode, would hardly use much charge.
    I saw a vid from Electric Classis Cars the other day. Off-roading in Tesla-converted Landrovers. They were crawling up lanes and rocks for hours, and only used a few % if that.
    And there was me telling my mates that I would probably get around 300 miles driving "normally" compared to the 330 miles if "hypermiling".
    I feel somewhat mislead by BMW.
    Why don't they just tell you it will do 300 on a long trip on cruise control, and around 200 doing local trips?
    At least we would be aware.
    The other thing that's misleading is the charging habits. "300+ miles on a full charge" but they don't advise charging over 80% or dropping below 20% unless on a long trip. So realistically, you only get to use around 60% of the battery, for 90% of the time, if charging between 20% and 80% to prolong the life.

    • @HighlandRider
      @HighlandRider  2 роки тому +2

      Nothing there I disagree with Nick. I still have to do my longest trip, in two weeks which is lots on motorway driving so I will get that experience and reality. I have based the charging on 220 mile cycles for the journey to England, and I will plan the charging on the way back when I know what reality is.

    I’ve owned my e40 very similar time and use it mainly for local runs like yourself and do indeed get about 200 miles/ 80% charge. Short journeys and low temp are the worst combination for an ev. My previous car was an Jaguar Ipace which was even worse, at best in the summer it would do 3 mls/ kWh even driving very carefully. In Winter that dropped below 2 mls/kWh. All manufacturers claims should be taken with a large pinch of salt including ICE cars. I expect to be doing two longer runs in the car before Xmas so the range could well improve. Petrol and diesel powered cars also struggle on short, cold local journeys and the mpg under those conditions may well surprise. Before the weather became so much colder I was easily getting 4 mls/ kwhr and once on a run to the dealer of approx 25 mls it recorded just over 5 mls/ kWh so roll on the summer months where I expect nearer 300 mls range. It could also be wheel size having so bearing on the range. On the M50 version it’s reported that a 50 miles loss of range with the larger option. My I4 has 19 inch.
