      @@KDR816 I have no idea, it is BMW UKs stupid idea. They claim it’s due to the chip shortage (actually they blame everything on the chip shortage at the moment) but this option, along with the ‘kick’ contactless tailgate has been deleted from the i40 model (although keyless entry has not, this does not include the tailgate option).
      The auto driving feature IS still available on the M50, so chip shortage go figure.
      The cars are coming with cruise distance control ‘preparation’ ie the buttons on the steering wheel but you have to pay €250 to get them ‘enabled’.
      My guess is this is all a precursor to more such options (eg autopilot) and subscription features (they already announced heated seats by subscription.
      I have made it clear that if I have to pay a subscription to get the use of heated seats and wheel I paid for as part of the comfort pack I will cancel the order - no response from BMW yet.
      This type of ‘theft’ from customers will be the new revenue model going forward into the future I suspect

    Great review Bjorn. Good to see it's as efficient as the Model 3. The Legacy makers are coming up to speed at last. I ordered my edrive40 back in March, and I'm due to pick it up in November. I cannot wait!!! It seems the only down side to the i4 is rear passenger space, but as I already own the 435d gran coupe, I'm already used to that. Mine is the M Sport, with 19" wheels and the memory seats (an absolute must). So I will lose a tiny bit of range, but worth it for how good it will look. :)

      This is very impressive but it’s not quite as efficient as the model 3, the LR has about 100hp more than this and dual motors and is about 20WH/mile more efficient. It’s comparable to the performance (on 20” wheels and about 550hp).
      Still this is a very very good car and a great result.

      This is still partially a ICE platform, and they are already getting some good efficiency numbers, but still the tesla is a better overall product if you don't find the interior lacking. When BMW comes out with a purely electric sedan platform I would say it can probably be 100-200kg less weight and 5%-10% more efficient. That is when they'll give tesla a run for their money

      Thanks for pointing this out. So many people complain about the rear space, but they don't realise that the 4 Series was never designed to be a 5 seater car. It's a sports coupé and it has been like that also before it became electric. If you want a "family" fully electric BMW, get an iX3 or wait for the i5.

    Bjørn still makes the best car videos, that's for sure! The 1000-km-challenge is also one of the most useful real-world tests you can do with an EV. Bjørn, will you continue doing the 1000-km-challenge after you get the first BEV that does it at your usual speed without having to be recharged? That will be a few years from now, but I think it will happen before you retire...
    And the i4 eDrive40 is a great efficient car. Too bad Tesla ditched the Model 3 Long Range RWD. Imagine what 1000 km time we would have with 250 kW charging and 82 kWh battery! Cars with two wheel drive seem to be so much more efficient than AWD.

      185Wh/km vs 186Wh/km for SR+ 2021 and LR 2022 M3 in Bjorn his tests. So no its not a bad decision from Tesla, the legacy auto makers just don't seem to know how to make a dual motor EV effcient! Tesla however does (I'm not a Tesla fan though, but what I always liked is how efficient the M3 is, how Musk lets them go 230+kmh, and so on. He isn't making baby cars. ID.3 going 160km/h? feck off volkswagen... (even though I own a fossil VW I really like)

    I own an i4e40 which was delivered end of march. I have not driven a Tesla so I can not compare. I have looked at it at a car show and did not like the interior. I simply wanted a car which was electric and more or less similar to what I had been driving for 5 years (430i). The i4 ticked all the boxes with a great dealership around the corner. I bought the 40 because I do not need 550 bHp, 340 is enough. I see the fun of having an extremely fast accelerating but not the daily use. The i4 ticks all the boxes for me: fast enough, good range, excellent comfort and all the nice features you need to get relaxed from A to B in a somewhat sporty looking car

    Points I want to make:

Tesla are able to expand so much quicker.

    It may be "too early" for 800V charging but you have to start somewhere. Ten years ago it was "too early" for EVs, but the early adopters helped bring them to where they are today. It'll be the same with 800V charging. It'll be interesting to watch what happens with GM's Ultium platform which can support 800V. GM is partnering with EVgo to build out an 800V (350kW) charging network.

      Hey is saying that 800V is too early for the cars, not the chargers.
      Hey stated that kempower for example, could easily switch to 800V. That's not a problem.

    • @bjornnyland
      @bjornnyland  2 роки тому +5

      There's no big benefits for 800 V cars with a 83 kWh battery. It's like introducing 100 Mpix sensor in a tiny mobile phone camera thinking that it will be better.

    • @wermagst
      @wermagst 2 роки тому

      Doesn't make any difference.

    • @A2an
      @A2an 2 роки тому

      Well... That isn't the entirely truth.
      To charge with 400V @ 500 Amp = 200Kw, You need a larger battery (Ah) compared to 800V.
      If you use same cell you can reduce your battery to half size or decrease your chaging timet to half the time.
      So it is a question abou design and request form all potential buyer.
      Anyway if you charge slow your battery will live longer.

    • @wermagst
      @wermagst 2 роки тому +1

      @@A2an Nope. It doesn't matter what voltage the charger has. Each cell is charged at it's own voltage, which is solely determined by the cell chemistry. For Li-Ion that is just below 4 V. The voltage of the pack is determined by how many batteries are connected in series, but it has zero effect on the charging speed (for batteries of the same size of course).

    This is pretty good for a partially ICE platform. I am looking forward to what they can do with a purely electric platform in a few years. I recon a 100-200kg weight cut and 5-10% efficiency inprovement will be possible. Now the Model3 is still overall a better product, but competition is surely catching up.

    • @KurtSeiffert
      @KurtSeiffert 2 роки тому

      Biggest factor aside from a lousy winter day for the M50 test is the tires. The M50 was on 20" tires. In the US configurator, the M50 goes from 270 to 227 mile range when going from the 19" to 20" wheels. However, an eDrive40 and and M50 on the same 19" wheels are only 12 miles apart - 282 and 270. Next factor is probably the additional motor and bracing. A guy in another forum just finished a 1200km trip in mountains of Italy with 4 adults and a tow box (Europeans have an hitch option) on the end. His average reported consumption was 3.4 m/kwh, actually beating the EPA estimated range. Highway speeds and 80º+ temperatures.
