Awesome review and I love the quality of your vids!
Thanks so much!
Great vid man! This and it's counterpart the 50-125 are literally my next purchases on the list.
Question about your gimbal setup though, have you tried just using counterweights to balance it out so you can use a matte box on your movi? Surely it's strong enough to handle all that?
I have! The Komodo soo light I need more tbh. I have 200g total, probably need like 600
Thanks for actually talking about the zoom capabilities, parfocal and some of the effects in can render. So many reviews just talk about them with technical specsheets and run them as though theyre reviewing a set of primes. Looking fwd to using this for punching in/out or crash zooms etc as well. Cheers!
For sure!! Glad you enjoyed my video thanks for commenting!!
What Matt box are you using on your lens?
I believe in this video it was the Bright Tangerine Misfit Atom!
Are the SHIMS set up depending on what camera you have? Is there a Chart or settings that tell you how many SHIMS you need to install for your particular camera?
Theres no real guide its really just trial and error!
Dear sir your review ..... ROCKS!
Thank you!!!
Great video...I picked these up to shoot a film soon. Pretty stoked to see how they work. Pairing with the Komodo and the Raptor.
They pair awesome with those two!!
Just curious, and forgive me if this is a off the wall question, but do you have to work with the shims if you’re going to keep it with the native PL mount?
You dont necessarily have to shim ever, but if you want the parfocal, its advised!
My God I want these pair of lenses...great vid sir.
Thank you!!
I know super 35 was the original standard, but about what does 20mm look like compared to the full frame world so I have an idea? this would help me out a lot. can't seem to find much info on this.
So a super 35 crop is about 1.6x. A 20mm would end up being about 31mm in focal distance, so check out what a 35 would be!
how does it mount on komodo.. its kind of not fitting with RF to EF mount.
It has an interchangeable EF or PL mount. Just make sure you have the EF mount on it!
You don’t happen to have a list of what shims you used for the Komodo?
Unfortunately I donttt
Excellent video and thank you! I actually just invested in the 50-125mm lens for a great price and after further research the 20-55mm and it’s focal lengths would have been the better move. Sooooo it looks I will purchase the one you reviewed and totally commit to Zoom cinema lens community. Again thank you for the information and works.
Glad I could help!
Can you please share the Tilta matte box/model you use?
This was the MBT12, but I have the BrightTangerine Misfits Atom and Wooden Camera UMB also!
Appreciate the review, in regards to the shim kit, does it differ if say put it on a Sony, then an Alexa? Or does it remain the same no matter what? And for your front end weight, you should really consider taking off the 2 Canon batteries and use Tilta's V mount adapter plate and chuck on a IDX battery to make it back heavy. That way ur C.G will be somewhere in the middle.
It will probably be different because you’ll be using different adapters! And yeah I use the V Mount, this was back when everything was really backordered lol. A hectic time
@@Minhute I heard it takes 5 mins to switch between PL mount and EF mount? That seems like such a long time...I would rather much buy a NATIVE PL mount lens, and then use a Metabones adapter to mount it onto an EF camera if needed.
You have to take screws out and replace. The only problem with using multiple adapters its you add distance and a lot of weight to the front of the camera. A heavy lens like this might break your camera if you don’t have much lens support.
@@Minhute Yeh this reminds me of the Angeniuex EZ1 lens, natively a Super 35mm coverage, but you need to take out the screws from the back to change it to full frame coverage. A bit of a pain, but it's good if you are working with larger sensors.
For sure haha, really depends on what set ups you have and how often you need it changed
you think it would be chill to use this lens with the pocket 4k with a vixtrox adapter?
Should be fine! Probably need lens support for sure though!
Or mount everything to the lens not the camera
Ahh! I knew you were gonna bring up The Office zoom shots when you mentioned the lens being parfocal 😂 awesome review! I currently have my eye on this lens
Its a pretty awesome lens! Its just very very bog/heavy haha so depends what you use it for
@@Minhute Yeah, I would love to use that lens for music video productions but I guess I would need a readyrig to use it on a gimbal
Not necessarily! Its definitely heavy the bigger issue is balancing it well on s gimbal haha. I feel like handheld use its very nice or even steadicam but gimbal would be tougher
@@Minhute True true... the 24-70 2.8 is difficult enough to balance on my ronin with the p6K.
Yeahh haha except thst lens isnt internal zoom
What's causing the green outlining of the footage mainly in the scene with man and woman in white?
I believe its a little bit of Chromatic Abberation alongside my color grading, which I did add a little sharpening to so it may be more defined.
Why Do you Need SHIMS for Power Focal to work? I'm used to Zoom in, Set Focus, Pull back for the frame and your good to go.
It changes based on what camera youre using because it adds distance between the lens and the sensor to help ensure that it works well
please share links to all accessories/complete rig setup
Tilta Cage amzn.to/36sm92u
Sachtler amzn.to/36pZrZ4
can you share a good tripod & cage for komodo.
Tripod wise my favorites are the Sachtlers! They’re super expensive though, if anything maybe a Benro. Aim for 100mm bowl!
For cages it really depends, I’d say Bright Tangerine is the best one on the market at the moment but also expensive. If you’re looking for cheaper the Tilta Cage is nice!
Thank you for your review. At 03:05 you can see heavy chromatic aberration. There is a green line along the actors face and also along the shirt of the actress. Could be the reflection of a green screen, but you did not use one, or did you? Otherwise I really like the lenses.
I didn’t use a green screen however I believe its a result of my color grading on the Komodo! It happens sometimes when I add a bit too much sharpening etc.
Finally someone honest. We all love gear, we must stop lying to ourselves.
Haha glad you think so! Thanks for the support i appreciate ya
Is 20-50 is enough for your use?
I think its good! I want something a bit wider to work alongisde it as well though
Yeah, I own the set and overall they're "ok". I wouldn't call them an amazing lens, though. Look at the bad chromatic aberration 3:03 for example (the green edges of her back)...that's not good. Will probably be sending mine back.
They're amazing for the price you pay for them! Of course theres other absolutely amazing lenses, but at ~ $2,000 they're crazy good. Way better than Rokinon Xeens etc. haha
@@Minhute So for you the DZO 20-55 is better than the new XEEN CF prime lenses ? Because yeah, the DZO seems to have a lot of chromatic aberration wide open... Also what do you think about the 270° focus for a one man operator for documentaries ? Thanks !
Personally never used the Xeens so I can’t speak on it completely myself but I’m not the biggest fan of Rokinon lenses. They’re amazing prices but I feel like the money could go to a bit better glass!
Otherwise I feel like they may be on the same scale, the dzofilm is just very big and has ranges from 20-55 rather than a prime!
@@tromal217 LOL comparing apples (primes) with oranges (zooms).
couldn't u use counterweight?
Definitely a possibility! I didnt have any on me when i used it haha
Based intro
Thank ya bro
what's the point to put that lens on a gimbal as it doesn't have AF?
In higher productions there's usually a crew! In this sense we use follow focuses which usually has someone else pulling focus, that way the camera operator can really just focus on getting the shot they need without having to worry about focusing anything.
@@Minhute Ah, I see. I didn't see the focus puller and I thought the cameraman has to do all the work. makes sense.
Oh hey, I just baught this from you
LOL Yes you did!!
"footage is insane"
Dior 😉
Not quite! Haha its Vior from Vandy the Pink
Power focal? Anyone lol.... Parfocal
Did i say power focal? Haha mightve just slipped 😅 I dont use a teleprompter or anything when I record
We gotta mess with the shims to make it parfocal ourselves? Also, I wish it just came with the EF mount version already mounted on.
Yes we do! It changes by mount etc. so if I was using EF one day then switched to PL i’d have to change my shims.
mad dandruff son
My life
There is quite a lot of chromatic aberation in the footage. :/
This content just cost me $2,500 ;-)
Thats what I like to hear HAHA
@@Minhute ;-))) A well-built, parfocal, non-breathing, fully-manual cine lens with character and a FF equivalent of 35-80mm, for $2,500 is basically a no-brainer, right? Perfect pairing for my new Z Cam E2-S6. Thanks for helping make the decision. It's on its way from B&H right now. Can't wait.
Its a pretty amazing one haha so much jam packed only thing that could make it better was if it was smaller haha
@@Minhute Yeah, I can see me thinking the same, but I'm so underwhelmed by the Sigma 18-35mm that I'm willing to take its size as a small sacrifice to pay for the extra reach, parfocal, and lack of breathing.
Definitely feel you there haha, Im a heavy 18-35 user but I really like using primes but its just so much to consider ahhh
rich asian kid.......zzzzzzzzzzzz
I wouldn’t consider myself rich though it may come off that way with all the gear I talk about. I just work a lot
