Im dissapointed in these so called metallica fans. Not a single one has asked you to check out Anesthesia Pulling Teeth from Kill Em All.
Early Metallica is absolutely killer. Pretty much any song from the Kill 'em All, Ride The Lightning, Master of Puppets or ...And Justice for All albums are badass.
I like your videos but I gotta say, every time you call metal music "rock" it kinda makes my skin crawl lol
I am a 57-year-old man with stage four cancer and I really really enjoy your videos. Thank you so much. Out of all the reaction videos out there,, you are more genuine than the others. I don’t know if you’ll ever read this but thank you
Hope things work out for you both and you go to see many more Metallica gigs. All the best from Scotland....
I am 63 years old and I love Metallica I love all the reactions and how this man expands his mind and gets into everything from country to metal. I wish you and that your family the best I'll say a prayer and never quit rocking.
Stand and deliver brother, you've got this. Keep jamming and keep fighting. Fuck cancer!
Praying for you.
Hope everything works out. One of my best friends lost most of his leg to a very rare sarcoma and has battled cancer two more times since his leg. He always says something that inspires me as I battle a very rare neurological disease.."every step is a finish line"" keep pushing and keep fighting!!
This is the best anti drug song ever. The destruction is illustrated in every beat you hear the chill then the build to desperation.
You are so right. Brings back some dark memories for me.
Absolutely right. This one gets brutally honest about the reality of drugs and what they do.
Crazy thing is that it was not about drugs specifically. It was mainly about being controlled by anything, or anyone.
@@dvk7277
That`s obviously not true. "chop your breakfast on the mirror", "I`m your source of self-destruction", "taste me you will see, more is all you need", ... obviously drugs. It started out about a song about "hard" drugs, but was later associated too with the alcohol problems of some band members.
@@dvk7277 ….“chop your breakfast on a mirror“. How could this not be about drugs? I know Hetfield said so later. You can relate it to more, but it’s about drugs.
The entire album is truly a masterpiece. One of the greatest albums, ever.
no features, no skips.
my first concert was Metallica opening for ozzy
@@amyballard2495 me too. In Philly
@@ronb6152that's awsome I saw them in Detroit
Yes!!!🤘🤘🤘
1st part of the song (heavy part) - you, the addicted, looking for the drug.. abstinence etc, build up..
2nd part of the song (mellow part, or calm before the storm as you put it) - when you are high, euphoria..
3rd part of the sone (gets heaving again, build up) - this is when the high comes off and the cycle starts again.. asking the master where the dreams are etc..
Dont know which songs you have done or not but:
One
Fade to Black
Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
Unforgiven I, II and III
Battery
Blackened
Damage Inc.
Creeping Death
Harwester of Sorrow
From whom the bell tolls
Disposible heroes
The Four Horsemen
Dyers Eve
Orion
So many fucking more its unreal..
I think you forget low mans lyrics and Mama said
Spot on on the breakdown of the phases.
That list needs to be completed with three masterpieces: "Bleeding me", "The outlaw torn" and "Fixxxer" 🤘🏼🎶
Best way to watch "Creeping Death" is from the 1991 Moscow concert.
@@professionalvampire1 hell yeah 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Just imagine a two hour concert of these songs. Complete adrenaline rush and when it's over you're drained. I've seen them live five times over 30 years. They blow the roof off every time. Even at 60 years old they still rock harder than most bands that are twenty years younger.
I had the pleasure of seeing Metallica open for Ozzy when Metallica was touring to support the Master of Puppets album.
It was an epic concert. My friend and I enjoyed it so much we went back for the 2nd night, bought tickets off a scalper in the nose bleed section and snuck down to the floor.
This album shows the massive influence that Cliff Burton had on the rest of the members. This album was Metallica at their peak songwriting wise.
Their finest hour!
Mic drop
Mehhhhh....nope
"and it's usually the calm before the storm"
You may not have listened to much Metallica, but you definitely understand Metallica
Their song "One" is both moving and meaningful, particularly combined with the official video. A powerful anti-war song!
It's based on the movie
Johnny got his gun
My favorite Metallica track is on the ride the lightning album, “Creeping Death” is a masterpiece in itself with biblical references. They have a video of it on UA-cam playing live for a crowd of an estimated 1.6-1.7 million people in Moscow. An epic live performance
Absolutely agree!
Yes, the Moscow concert is epic.
Love that video and Creeping Death is a fav of mine too
Creeping Death and then Cthulu after that...what an amazing combo. Both album versions are absolute fucking perfection.
Imagine playing in front of 1.6+ million people? Absolutely fucking insane.
You can basically pick ANY song off the first four albums and it's gonna be a great song.
This is simply one of the greatest albums ever recorded, kudos for being open minded enough to appreciate how awesome this song is!! I've been listening to it since it came out & it never gets old!!
Best reaction to this song I’ve seen. Real, raw and dead on
This is by far, my favorite album of Metallica's catalogue. The Library of Congress agrees, as it is the only metal album yet to be enshrined. Favorite song though is Dyer's Eve off of their next record ...And Justice for All. The best way to listen to it IMO is to listen to the previous song on the record: To Live is to Die written by the late, great Cliff Burton. Then it goes instantly right into Dyer's Eve. This is the way you listened to it back in the day on cassette tape or vinyl. Back in the days when you listened to an album straight through as an experience and not just one song.
Master of Puppets is #1
Every professional album ever is in the Library of Congress. I have like 9 Albums in the Library of congress.
Cliff Burton didn't write "To Live Is To Die" either. He just wrote the poem in the middle.
@@redrick8900 what are the titles of your albums, mediocre talent 1-9?
@@jumpcutreviews1545 Your inept insults at art you haven't heard would only reinforce my point if true. Way to step in it.
Check out Metallica 1991 live in Moscow “Enter Sandman”
You’ll never see band playing to a crowd with more energy. It’s an amazing thing to see
I totally agree!!!
Creeping Death is much better.
Why would you say enter sandman? Creeping death is way better.
They're all great! At that concert, they showed their masterful skills. Whatever they chose to play was excellent. 😀
@@neworleanslady9664 Oh absolutely. But Creeping Death was still better.
*I like how you said "it's usually the calm before the storm" at the beginning of the guitar solo because that's what it was supposed to represent. The mellow, close your eyes happiness at the start of the solo was the high from the drug kicking in, feeling euphoric. Then it gets a little chaotic as they're starting to come down. Then it's just full throttle frenzy as the user is withdrawing, needing more, now.*
Exactly. Couldn’t be better said.
1992 Blasting 'And Justice for All' through cassette on an Alpine while leaving high school. Good times.
As a long standing member of the Metallica family (huge fan since about 1985) welcome to the Metallica family where all are welcome whether you have been listening for decades or just discovering them. And I can listen to them all day long and it get tired of them and they are still making great music and are still spectacular live!
Well said, Sister! Fan since 91.
Well I started with them in 83 and I have to say that after and justice for all in 1990 everything is just mediocre. You want the best stuff, truth trash go to the 1980s because after and justice for all they’re no better than the average band. well I bought my first in 1983 and fell in love with them throughout justice for all in 1990 and then the black album was the most disappointing album in history and they never have recovered. Do you want the true Metallica go to the 1980s albums because after that they’re no better than the average band.
Ok. This is a masterpiece, and there is a reason Master of Puppets is enshrined in the Library of Congress for cultural significance.
It is about drug abuse. But it's more than that. The lyrics are told from the perspective of the drugs. The instrumentation is told from the perspective of the addict.
I appreciate this reaction.
The beautiful interlude in the middle symbolizes the addict when they're high but it's starting to wear off and the guitar is pounding away like the urge to get high again. No peace except that small moment in between trying to figure out how you're gonna get your next fix.
Classic Metallica. Love them. Glad you can appreciate now what us rock heads loved waaay back when. 💜
i love the interlude in this song. its so calm, makes you feel at peace, like youre riding the high, then he cries for help and it loses control, it throws you off by not following the beat, like youre crashing, they invoked the feelings of getting high and coming down with their music
This, in my opinion, is the best metal song of all time, and Tool is my favorite band. Next, react to "Orion" to hear Metallica with just music. It will blow your mind. Cliff Burton on bass.... Just... Wow.
The album made it to the library of congress that should tell everything one needs to know about this album. Such a perfect written masterpiece. At this era metallica made history.
Nothing like hearing master of puppets the first time i wish i could get that first time feeling again that was my high a high that i chase but never seem to find again.
When you said you felt rage more than sadness: NAILED IT
“The calm before the storm.” You’re absolutely right. The slow part represents the high, then the hunger for more slowly comes back.
The beauty of music is that our tastes broaden as we age and THERES SO MUCH MUSIC !
bro i love watching your facial reactions to these songs, seems like youre really grasping how metal started and its core.
As I've mentioned to other reactors such as yourself who grew up on hiphop and just now discovering metal:
Hip-hop (rap) from yesteryear (I'm talking the good non-mainstream great lyrics and messages - not the 'gucci-gang and drug/gun/hos mainstream stuff) and Metal music are very similar. They have more in common than your realize. They both articulate very deep messages and profound meaning in their lyrics, and usually comes from a very deep, introspective or downright angry place.
The biggest difference is the live instrumentation in metal (that hip-hop samples bass and guitar riffs and even beats). The composition of the instruments in metal music serves the same purpose as the musical score in a movie does. (the haunting sounds of Jaws, or the high-energy battle music of The Avengers or often sad and melancholic sounds in heart-wrenching scenes). The music enhances the acting, action, and dialogue in a movie broadcasting and magnifying the intended emotional response - just as the guitars and drums enhance the mood and emotions of the listener to metal. Those movies would not be nearly as moving or impactful if it wasn't for amazing music being played by the symphony-orchestras.
You nailed it when you said "Country music could have the same lyrics, and will produce a completely different emotion". That's it!!! Metal music (most of it) has a message - and that message is honestly very similar to hip-hop: rebellious, anti-establishment, anger at the elites, oppressors, and corporations that rule over people, war pigs that use soldiers for their gains. And it hammers home its message by stirring the emotions in the listener to give them something to identify with - whether that's mutual anger, rage, loss, frustration, etc - through the instruments and their compostition.
I will tell you from experience that this song FEELS like addiction, and if you know, you know. Starts off kinda hard but just, when your body starts letting you know that it's been a while since we had a fix. Gets harder as the anxiety increases. Then you hit that airy, smooth, bridge, when you first feel that drug washes over you. Then immediately starts to Amp back up, because even under the influence that addict already starts to look for where the NEXT hit gonna come from. This song is about heron, but ANYONE that has had a pain pill addiction can also testify!
This was written almost 40 years ago. James was in early 20's . In my estimation his body of work is just too impressive.
Great reaction you're catching on sir.
Thanks for liking the video I also checked out another song by Metallica - Nothing else matters ua-cam.com/video/Zu9VQGhqmVA/v-deo.html
If you like drums check out Slipknot
The best part of the whole album master of puppets is the fact that they were 23, 24 years old when they wrote their masterpiece.
Metallica fan since 1987. Enjoy.
"I don't know how we can listen to 5 Metallica songs in a row"
THAT was very true. Really. I remember NOT being to understand or even HEAR anything passed a few songs on any new album...
And, I thought I was weird... hahaha
But, it all turns out to be... "their" fault ;)
good catch on all that
Polo, no problem. We all love it.. You are far from done with Metallica, there still are many mo albums& tons of songs.. Check out Outlaw Torn.. It goes straight to yo soul& Bleeding Me.. oh yeah
haha 8minutes of dopamine 👌
There is a reason this album and song have been added to the library of Congress for its significance
The fact this song came out in 86 is crazy cause addiction has become so much worse since then.
Rap and Metal can have a lot of similarities, with the fast paced lyrics and energy. Love seeing someone discover music like this.
The thing about this song being featured on Stranger Things is that I'm super jealous of all these people getting to hear this song for the first time.
Yesssss! you finally said it! (MWM) (Music with Meaning) Exactly! 🖤💚🖤💚😎😎🙏
Important note: The Master of Puppets album is saved in the Library of Congress as a cultural and national treasure.
Fun fact about the drummer. His dad was part of one of those four man quartets back in the day. So his style has a little of that 40's, 50's style to it.
This song is their absolute tour de force.
For pure, bone-crunching, body-crushing, hypnotizing power, check out "Battery".
Together, along with Master of Puppets, they make the best 1-2 combo of opening tracks I've ever heard on an album.
@polo reacts that’s what it’s about and I always like your reactions keep doing the good work
Love the reaction. One small thing to mention. This is metal, not rock. Rock is like Metal's calmer more radio friendly little brother. Rock is not nearly as aggressive as Metal. Kinda like Hip-hop and Rap are related, but different 👍
the way the song in constructed is almost like an addicts angry/aggressive withdrawal then gets to the peacefull melodic part would be like getting that euphoric blissful hit then the cycle repeats, whether it was intended like that or not it's so fitting.
Excellent reaction. Metal, can bring out rage and frustration, and help you release it and get yourself together. Lyrically, "Eye of the Beholder" is one of the best Metallica songs.
I DEFINITELY recommend seeing their Manchester 2019 performance of this! It was pouring rain and they gave no fucks. XD
One thing you to take in account that cliff Burton played on master of puppets the last album before he died jason newsted played from there on until he left big diff in giutar playing cliff was one of kind awsome
This takes me back. Metallica was perfect for an angsty teen. Then grunge came along.
Rick Beato just downloaded his interview with Kirk Hammett. Around 1:08:40 of that interview, Kirk describes how their music is therapeutic, further saying every year there's a 12-year-old boy angry at his parents feeling frustrated that just connects with it.
Honestly, their music is therapeutic for any age feeling annoyed by anything. That's personal knowledge from a woman in her 50s. 😂
BTW it's an excellent interview that any fan of Metallica should check out! I have an even deeper love for them now.
The song can be interpreted for anything that controls you because anything that controls you is your master
i think james said in an interview that the song is about manipulation in general
Nailed the meaning brother. People thought it was only about cocaine. It's about all addiction.
You have to see a live version of this. The audience participation is just perfect.
My take on the structure of this song is that the guitar solo in the middle is like the temporary high someone gets for giving into their addiction, then they slowly come back down until they end up right where they were before (the same riff from the beginning)
metal is the opera of rock and roll and Metallica is the master of it. I would highly suggest their San Fransisco symphony tour versions of so many classic songs.
5 Metallica songs gives me energy! It doesn’t drain me! 😂👍 That’s how!
And that is why Metallica is the world's premier speed metal band.
Already inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame several years ago.
Lars Ulrich drummer /founder, James Hetfield lead vocals /rhythm guitarist, Kirk Hammet lead guitar, Robert Trujillo bass.
(Cliff Burton original Bassist RIP, Jason Newsted Bassist quit)
The depth of understanding that these guys had in their early 20s is truly remarkable!!
This is a really good point
Got to see them after the black album release
Ride the lightening will always be my favorite
Much love and respect for expanding your musical library! You have to check out "One" next. Make sure to watch the original video. It's a mini movie, so don't worry about reading the lyrics beforehand. You won't need to, I promise!
@@ianwakers I swear everyone always recommends the same songs when someone is just diving into Metallica. Master, ride the lightning, one and nothing else matters. It's not like the band has TONS of great songs that are not only great but legendary. They have a bunch of legendary tier songs and that's unheard of. Fucking James even crossed over and made a damn country song on their experimental load/reload album. But nope, let's recommend the same 4 songs. Now where I disagree is I love both the studio and music video of one. Both are fine imo
@@ianwakers it adds another layer of greatness to an already great song. You're the only person I've seen in the last year that has that opinion.
“Blackened” has always been one of if not my favorites
Love your compare and contrast of the lyrics with country music. Drug addiction certainly brings out both sadness AND anger.
Even the instrumentals start out light and angelic and ends up heavy and dark. This song gives me chills.
It's hard to interpret chopping your breakfast on a mirror too many different. 😉
But you are right, the general theme of something controlling your life fits many things.
What do you mean "What's your favorite Metallica song?" You have to ask us, "What are 20-50 favorite Metallica songs?"!!
Glad I found you, and looking forward to another. 👍
What's your favorite Metallica song?.... The first four albums....
6:45 Have you ever watched the sunrise at the end of a 3 day bender on speed? You just ate for the first time in 72 hrs, n you are filled with regret, sorrow, and hopelessness as you get ready for your first rest in three days? I have. 8:45 the desperate moment when you realize you must end your addiction... or it will end you (and soon). Two n a half years clean now, and counting. I mention this not for accolades or pats on the back, If I did this so can you. If you are trying to get clean or are a friend of someone who is, there is hope, and there is help. Peace, love, and empathy.
For me the song's tone conveys more a feeling of deep frustration or helplessness rather than rage. This song is a masterpiece.
I was an opiate addict for around 12 years, I started when I was 15. Been sober many years now. I quit methadone cold turkey, was taking 165mg a day for 2 years. That's enough to kill several people but it didn't even get me high just made me feel normal. My withdrawal was absolute hell and I almost died. I had seizures, hallucinations, intense anxiety and constant pain. It lasted for a full month. It was like the flu but thousands of times worse for a whole month. I just wanted to comment and say anyone can quit, you have it in you I promise. You have to want to quit for yourself. Only when you're tired of it and want it to end will you be able to finally get clean. Who ever needs to hear this keep going, you got this. It sucks and takes years to get back to normal but it's 100% worth it. You're amazing, don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
In case it hasn’t been mentioned: Master of Puppets was deemed a culturally and aesthetically important work to be stored in the Library of Congress archives
Fave song? impossible to do without adding an S. Fave song + s "Creeping Death / Call of Ktulu", "Orion", "Blackened" , "The god That Failed". All those are solid.
Rage is a good word for it. A lot of classic metal isn't just people being angry, it's people expressing why *you should be angry too*.
Drug, war, corruption, poverty, all the problems of the world. Why is nobody angry about them?
Glad you dug this one and got into the lyrics, one of their absolute best, possibly their magnum opus. My recommendation for what to listen to, the way I got into ‘Tallica, probably wouldn’t work well as a reaction, but the album S&M is a great way to hear the breadth of their work. It’s a live album they did with the San Francisco Symphony back in 1999, and while it’s missing a few greats like “Fade to Black,” it’s still a great album.
This song in particular shows off how Metallica composes for a live audience. The repetition throughout of “Master…Master!” gives even someone hearing it for the first time enough examples to get used to it and to hear the people in the crowd shouting it each time, as James Hetfield (lead vocals and rhythm guitar) barks out the first one and then gestures for the audience to yell the second one. Fans who’ve been to multiple shows have even started singing along to the mellow guitar solo that he plays with Kirk Hammet (lead guitar), which is a strange but beautiful evolution of a song they have performed in almost every show since the album was released 36 years ago.
You mentioned the drums played by Lars Ulrich, not the most technical of metal drummers and he’s had his ups and downs with discipline and practice over the years, but seeing the performances he puts in lately, he’s taken such criticism to heart and really stepped up his live work as of late. Most Metallica songs give writing credit to him and Hetfield, which you can really see if you watch some making ofs, Lars is quite the producer and song shaper, often talking about what a given track “needs” or should have to achieve what they want. This was also the last album to feature their original bassist, Cliff Burton, who tragically died in a bus accident while touring to promote the album.
They sing this song with anger against drugs, rock bands see a ton of drug use and abuse ,they've lost friends to overdosing on drugs, and they're extremely upset about it.
The slow part is when he got his fix and is all high, then it goes back to the fast part "Master,Master where's the dream that I've been after" "Master, Master, you promised only lies"
When it was released, James Hetfield said the theme for the album was "Manipulation. People being manipulated in different ways." Every song on Master of Puppets focuses on this subject matter, coming from different directions. Great videos, my man.
The laughter at the end has been my favorite since I was in elementary school
I grew up on this stuff and never really dove into the lyrics and structure but the slow down representing finally getting the fix and it speeding back up to represent the chaos between fixes is all I can hear now. I love metal
All their old stuff is like riding a roller coaster of emotion.
Love Metallica ❤️ my all time favorite band... I was 15 yrs old when I 1st hurd of them and going on 50 and still love ❤️ them... must listen 🎶 to Sanatorium... for sure...
Nothing else Matters is a great one to do. The instruments tell a story along with the lyrics. It's wise to understand the lyrics of Metalica. My son is a heavy metal artist. I didn't care for a lot of it but the music is phenomenal and the lyrics are awesome if we take the time to hear. Thank you for appreachiating this fact. Love your reactions.🥰
It’s the adrenaline rush from the power and pace of the instrumentation that creates a unique feeling, in combination with the content of the lyrics. Great reaction!
What a great comment !! It is a sad song when you think about someone being addicted, but so full of rage and aggression against that addiction. Glad you’re expanding you’re musical journey !!
I'm a 57 yr-old white man who grew up listening to all genres of music, and I wholeheartedly agree that while there's definitely a time for music without any deep meaning, that simply moves you and envelops your soul in it's own magic, and people can find meaning in them, especially if they're tied to impactful memories, but generally songs with deep meaning are the ones we tend to carry with us throughout our life.
Metallica, from the start, seemed dedicated to writing songs with deep meaning almost exclusively.
Rage is a good word. For the waste, the knowledge of the path being trodden but that pull is so very strong and we may as well be puppets.
Its always interesting to watch people crossing over to new types of music. Reaction videos seem to open peoples minds past preconceived notions and more often than not you can see some level of genuine shock at how much more they like at least parts. Ive always tried to do that but seeing how effective it is has made me more often try and apply that open view to everything.
Stopped in for the Metallica, stayed for the insight. I very much like what you have to say, young man. Very well thought-out, very open-minded. Subbed.
I love that "mastee, master..." fading away with echoes like you are sinking under water, sinking into the drug effect and inmediatly start that solo .. clse you eyes and you literally are flying, riding on heroine or something... That's perfection, period.
Just keep digging....I grew up a hip hop/metal white boy and now all music ties us together ....I love the Beatles now....music is amazing 😎
In regards this song invoking feelings of rage, I would say it would be closer to a rage that invokes self hatred. Addiction is an arduous battle with yourself. Always putting yourself down, always hating what you are, always lamenting the next spiral that is to come while trying to recover. Relapsing is a very real fear as well as a strong temptation. Really powerful stuff.
I really dig when hip hop fans get turned onto metal. AWESOME
I'm starting the deep dive into your reaction videos, and I gotta say, watching your discovering those bands made me realize a good reason why I have been struggling to discover new music in the last 20 years. You point it out yourself: this stuff was so impactful, meaningful, ground breaking. I was spoiled listening to that music when I was a teen. What there any music put out there in the last 2 decades that hit you as hard as this shit? Commenters, let me know if I missed anything, but I've been trying and the field has looked very tame for a very long time now, IMO...
Master of puppets are pulling your strings, twisting your mind and smashing your dreams. Blinded by me, you can't see a thing. Just call my name. Cause I hear you scream, master.
This single song influenced so many metal fans and earned the respect of non-metal fans that when it first came out, it pivoted everyone's head to turn and look at this group more closely than before. Complex time changes, crunching rhythm and intricately places riffs became the norm for many bands after that and created speed metal and thrash metal as a genre.
I feel like all music is open to interpretation. Not even what the artist(s) may have thought, but we hear it in own way.
9:46 is one of the most charged, but pleasing sounds of any song I’ve ever listened to.
Found your channel when this video popped up in my Recommended list. Really enjoyed your reaction, some great thoughts. Subscribed and looking forward to more Metallica! 🤘
POLO...So smooth. Keep it up Brother!
I love seeing your honest excitement listening to these metal classics. That's the same face I have every time I hear these, even though I've been listening to metal since the 80s. Welcome to the club buddy!
Great reaction and insight. Reading the lyrics really helped you understand the emotion of the song.
I commented without watching the entire video, you hit the nail on the head when you said that it could be interpreted in several different ways.
Love your reactions man! I like your deep dives into the songs, but I must ask. That wooden thing that doesn't stop spinning in the background. does it have a name? I need one! xD
In the 80’s there were so many people who thought these guys were teaching us to worship satan or go off ourselves, but all you got to do is take a minute to read the lyrics and know that’s not what it’s about. They have a number of songs that are anti-war (For Whom the Bell Tolls, Disposable Heroes, and One). Cheers!
Man, I still remember one of my most impactful music experiences this one day in mid-summer 1998. Blockbuster Music at the mall had this awesome listening station with like 5 or 6 arcade style stools bolted to the floor and pretty good quality over-the-ear headphones at each station. You could grab a CD of the shelf and the cashier would open it for you and put it in a disc changer behind the counter so you could listen to as much of it as you wanted.
It started with Battery. I instantly got goosebumps when I heard the acoustic intro. The song leveled me. Then Puppets hit me even harder. I was immediately hooked and owned the rest of their albums within a month or two after only owning Justice prior to that fateful Blobkbuster trip.
