You were right about the "angels deserve to die" lyric. It's all about how when people die, they are judged, and when they die "badly," ie from drug abuse, a lot of people will look down on them and say they deserved it, even if they were a really good person. The song being so disjointed and overstimulating comes from the idea that we put on "makeup" and conceal parts of ourselves from the world, covering up the things we don't want other people to see. We've all got different sides to ourselves and it can be overwhelming and uncomfortable to live with that feeling.

While the artists intention is meaningful, ultimately it doesn't actually matter. Anyone is free to interpret art as they see fit. There can be worse reasonings and better reasonings behind interpretations but thats the whole point of art.

Something that isn't recognized enough, the ability for a band to start and stop a sound/note in unison that fast so crisply, as well as all the temp change ups. SOAD isn't a top band of mine but their talent is incredible. Serj's vocal talent... you need to check out him singing opera and with symphonies. 😉 There are some very talented vocalist in the metal genre. When you're doing your band research, definitely check for the lead singers vocal trainings. I think metal vocalist talents are often overlooked, and they're some of the most fascinating singers with their unique abilities.

Rock & metal can take us through every human emotion & experience. Having seen a few of your reactions, I think you're going to love SOAD. A lot of their songs have deep meanings / are very political. Serj's voice is obviously really unique, but all the band members are really talented, and their music really well composed in general. If you like the loud/quiet thing check out Toxicity; Prison Song is much more obvious lyrically but super impactful; and BYOB is kind of a must listen for everyone - the music/vibe both compliments and contrasts with the meaning in a really great way. Enjoy the journey!

SOAD are GOAT status for millions of people. There’s just something so unique about the combination of these 4 people…lightning in a bottle
Some things you’ll pick up on the more you react to them, their heritage plays a very important role in their art. They’re all the children of Armenian immigrants and Serj (the vocalist) incorporates a lot of traditional “Armenian Folk” techniques in his vocals. As does Daren (guitarist/backup vocals) but to a lesser extent.
Their art has always been rooted in this weird dichotomy between social/political activism and absurdism.
Perfect example, the original name for this song was “suicide”. It was the album’s first single but because the album dropped less than a week before the 9/11 attacks, the label made them change it because any mention of “suicide” meant an immediate radio ban. So they “chopped” the word “suicide” in half…hence “Chop Suey”.
The song is indeed a social commentary on how society views people who abuse substances/overdose. But, it’s also about how those people end up in the circumstance they’re in. There’s millions of people dealing with pain, trauma, and hopeless circumstances…we’re so quick to judge someone who OD’s without bothering to take any of these things into consideration.
This is deep shit…yet they still needed to put a shot of them eating chop suey in the video. Just because they viewed the whole name change thing as absurd lol.
    I HIGHLY recommend:
    Toxicity
    Aerials
    Spiders
    Sugar
    Deer Dance
    Prison Song
    BYOB

Their unique vocals, amazingly creative thought provoking lyrics, beats, flow and heaviness; System of a Down is like no other. Their music has touched my soul and changed my life, there is so much substance if you listen closely. Your detailed description of the lyrics is accurate and even though SOAD has stated the meaning behind the song, I personally believe they’re still being a bit vague and really even though it is about how judgement falls upon someone in the manner that they died it reaches further specifically into someone who commits suicide. SOAD are Armenian and they bring in some of that culture's folk music styles into things. Serj is a fantastic front man and one of my favorite lyricists of that generation.
As some have commented the song was to be called "Suicide" but the label said "nah bruh" and made them change it. IDK how the name Chop Suey came up, but you can see how little Serj appreciates the name in the middle of the video.
And you were spot on with the end where you mentioned what you had read. Basically the full song is about how if you die via suicide, that the press and people in general take apart every aspect of your choices and judge you. If they find things like drugs, or the death was an overdose, it's viewed more as "you knew the risks, you got what you deserved" or worse if some religious views get into the discussion as well. It, like a lot of their songs, have deep messages along with a completely unique musical style we've not seen at this level since.
The band isn't making new music together anymore. Serj says it's artistic differences in the studio. But they did come back to touring I believe right after lockdowns ended. Serj also preforms as a solo artist and continues to have one of the most amazing voices and presences in the industry.

I recall hearing about Serj (lead singer) was intending to be an opera singer but was told he wasn't good enough and then SOAD started and bam, he became more famous than he could even imagine.

FWIW, it is not "chop suey" as a food reference. The title either was or contained "suicide" and the label wanted the word removed, so they chopped sui and got the title "chop suey" as reference.

They're a french metal band and are tight af man. Try the heaviest matter of the universe(this one hits pleasantly hard) and perhaps Stranded.

This is a song about feeling suicidal (suey) and only half a person (chopped).
Waking up and putting on a fake face to deal with the world every day.
The music shifts between manic and blissful to mimic the constant mood shifts and battling with lifes issues.

The studio was heavily against the idea of a song titled Suicide. So, the band had to ‘chop’ it and the title became Chop Suuey. The shot of the band eating Chinese food is a play on the title.
The pain and longing in Serj’s voice as he quotes form the Bible “Why have you forsaken me?” is heartbreaking!

Dude, just found your channel. System was my favorite band in middle school. Spot on with the lyrical take. The song is about how people are viewed differently when they die based on socio-economic status. Celebrities are revered and remembered when they overdose, whereas normal people who die by the same vice are thought of as deserving it, because they had it coming. System has a wild and unique sound and have a ton of awesome songs. I recommend BYOB, Sugar, Toxicity and Spiders for the popular ones, and Egobrain, Violent pornography, and Peephole for the more deep cuts
