I discovered Metalica as a young 'rock-chick' student, they were the favourite band of the boy I fell in love with. Now I'm a middle age woman, struggling with disabilities and depression. The older I get the more this song hits home. Always pushing away society's expectations, I shall be that silly old woman, wearing 'unsuitable' clothes, dying my hair, pushing my way to the front of the few gigs I manage to get to. I won't be the Unforgiven. x
He spent his entire life not being able to just be himself, to think like he would without "their" (society) influence, telling him how to think, act or be. That's him in the box, trapped, as a kid, a teen, an older guy then an old man. And after trying his ENTIRE life to get out of that box "they" kept him in, he finally finds the key and reaches to unlock and GET OUT, but drops the key as he passes away at that time. NEVER FREE, NEVER ME. Wow, this is so very real. Rise above it ALL, be yourself and never give up on ANY of your dreams. MUCH respect POLO
He's definitely one of the goats. Even only really liking half of Metallica's music I have to admit his goathood. They arrived in the midst of glam pop rock and just ripped a hole in space time
The song is about growing up and trying to change yourself to please others rather than living your own way. In the song he mentions, 'this boy', 'this young man', 'this man'.... always referring in the third person to himself. Eventually, the man dies regretting not living the life he wanted to please others. In the video, you can see a young boy with adults looking over him trying to shape him and he wants to break free but he cannot. At the end when he finds the key to break out in his own pocket because he always held the key to change and do what he wants but then he is too tired and dies. The unforgiven, to never forgive yourself for not living the life you always wanted because you are afraid of being labeled in a certain way. Learn the lesson guys. Do your own thing!
Apparently they were struggling to get him to do it, and so the album producer told him to just fucking do it.. and we got such an emotional solo that nearly brings me to tears
Metallica saved so many lives, mine included. They changed everything for me. And the nicest guys on the planet, especially Lars. I will love them to my last breath.
Correction the scene I was talking about was from succession lol. No wonder I couldn't find the clip. Thank you guys for watching. Be sure to like the video if... you liked the video. Peace

dude... I'm gonna call you 'dude' from now on.... 'cause you're part of "us" now ;) anyway, dude, you started squinting @6:47 and slooooowly shifted from horizontal swiping to true heavy metal vertical headbanging ;) love you work, keep going ! who's next ?? Iron Maiden ? Pantera ? ... p.s. in MY book, you didn't get anything wrong when you said that this band was great. You honestly can not go wrong with Metallica when it comes to feelings from deep down... be it the melody, the beat, the lyrics, the synchronicity, etc. pulling anyone's deeply repressed thoughts out of their plastic comfort zone and into the open
Been a Metallica listener since their existence. To me, each tune is Metallica. I hear Metallica sound & vibe in each & every one of their songs. Songs are different but not.
The solo in this song is amazing for real. Love the deep profound feeling this song gives. Many metal songs follow a similar feel as "blues" music in that there's a profound negative emotion attached to it. You listen to this solo, and you can literally feel the emotion and hear the heart crying in it. And that's a staplepoint of blues. You start to understand it's not just "noise" as so many think - like blues it's not just about knowing which notes to play - but to understand just WHY those notes need to be played. Great reaction, brother. I love your channel and your vibe. There are so many great metal songs, and many of them are by Metallica.
Man your balance between talking and listening to the music is just perfect. There are so many other youtubers who talk 90% of the music instead of enjoing the song. Thank you so much and keep on going.
All 3 unforgiven songs are great and deep and James always seems to be able to write his lyrics in a way that is very personal to him yet still able to be interpreted to the listeners own life.
I've always told ppl I feel as though they're one of the best instrumental bands ever. These songs didn't need lyrics to have been amazing timeless classics imo!
I HIGHLY recommend reacting to the other Unforgiven parts, 2 and 3. If you're feeling ambitious for a video, watch those and then listen to all three back-to-back. There's a video somewhere that has all of them together on youtube (if interested I'll dig it up). All three are great but in a whole, they paint a very POWERFUL sort of character arc/story
I came to Metallica late, actually being introduced to the band through my sons who are metal musicians. I am a dyed-in-the-wool convert, I love Metallica. But Unforgiven is my absolute favorite, followed closely by Nothing Else Matters. I think both show what a great vocalist James Hetfield actually is.
Hey, Polo, thanks for the video. Metal has six major subgenres, and each of those has subgenres of its own. Prior to this album, Metallica was very solidly a Thrash Metal band: distorted, down-tuned guitars playing fast, heavy, technically challenging riffs, jackhammer drums, lyrics kind of hidden in the music. With this album, Metallica shifted to what is known as Groove Metal: the guitar is slightly slower and slightly less technically challenging, the lyrics are more distinct, the drumline is usually a bit simpler.
Loving the reactions. Metallica has more Masterpieces than most bands have hits. There are some other great songs you need to hear. Creeping Death, For Whom The Bell Tolls, Battery, Welcome Home(Sanitarium), Orion, Blackened, Harvester of Sorrow, To Live is to Die, and there are still more.
This is a band I grew up on in the 80’s and saw several times. Seeing them in person is a true” experience “. So happy to see the younger generation dive into the music of my generation. And we had some kick a$$ heavy metal/glam/hair/thrash/rock and roll!!! Love your reactions!!
Great reaction,,, really love your honesty and yes Metallica been here long time and made alot of albums,,, many fans hate they changed it up,, but it would be rather strange for grown up men make music for 40 years and always make the same stuff:))
Once again awesome reaction. It so reminds me of sitting in my basement on a Saturday night with my best friend listening to this song for the first time. Looking at each other's reaction to the first listen.
Polo, keep it up. Your reactions are genuine, real-time, sincere, succinct and heart felt. You're so well poised. It's a pleasure to share in these. As for you being able to relate to James'upbringing and losses, that's why I've listened to them for 3+ decades. They helped me through so many tough times. Their music isn't all cookie-cutter like so many artists. I'm sorry for your personal struggles, but we're both still alive. Carry on
This song makes me think how in this time is so relevant a song that talks about how the society tells u how u suppose to think to be to act n not be able to express your true self n thats why u r in constant struggle with yourself cause u want to please everyone but also u want to be yourself but society have been telling u how u suppose to be man this is the reason why so many teenagers suffer from depresion is just amazing tht this song never going to age
I'm at a similar stage of life exploring music I missed back in the day, and having a great time. I've really loved seeing reaction videos like yours falling in love with my old loves for the first time. Looking back, it makes me so sad that there was such a rift between the rock kids and the hiphop kids in school. At least where I was in Seattle, it felt like you had to be one or the other, and allegiances seemed to decide so much, socially. I'm really grateful for the artists that bridged that divide, and the fact technology lets us trade more freely from where we are now.
New to your channel. Love how you take the time to understand and listen openly. I am a music lover. I love oldies, jazz, pop, rock. R&b and older rap. Not so much the new stuff but I love music especially when it makes you feel something
Watch the documentary A Year and A Half In the Life of Metallica. It's the making of the "black album". This guitar solo was off the cuff after an argument between Bob Rock (producer) and Kirk Hammet (guitarist) and how Kirk thought it should go. Recorded in ONE take because Kirk was PISSED!!!
I love these reactions and somewhat resonate with you on these reactions. I was only Rap and nothing else from like the age of 12 to 20 and then opened my eyes to everything else. Watching you react similar to I did for most of this is awesome! Don't stop being you brother and these small steps, revelations or whatever you want to call it shows just how much we are all the same at the end of the day, Color, religion, politics aside we are all just human beings trying to figure it out! Harry Mack GOAT as a close second to my one and only Tupac.... it hurts to type that but Harry is a fucking alien!!!
I'm a fan of your channel I am a fan of Metallica 20 years after recording this album and after a 1/2 a billion albums sold they relived the recording process and there's a video you can check out on UA-cam 45 minutes along about how they recorded this album best thing ever
You picked up on the change in arrangement and sound. That’s from Bob Rock, whom Metallica brought in to produce this album. Gave them more of a structured “rock” sound. The solo is unreal good… that’s Bob Rock getting Hammett so PO’d by challenging him, that he laid down one of the best solos of his career. I love your reacts bro.
Die hard Metallica fan here and this song is squarely in my top 5. The other 4 are Fade to Black, The Outlaw Torn, Master of Puppets and Seek & Destroy
Credit to Bob Rock as well, his contribution in shaping this song was huge and it was the song they worked on the most. The final result speaks for itself.
Would love to see you react to Metallica, Welcome Home(Sanitarium). It’s my personal favorite, deals with mental health. The idea for the song comes from the movie One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. It’s about abuse of mental health victims. Great song. Loving your videos, keep them coming!
Wonderful reaction POLO! 100% This came out when I was 10 years old right after my parents divorce so even with limited knowledge it had major impact on my life and personal art as you can imagine. Great job sir!
This is probably my favorite Metallica solo. Not necessarily because the solo itself is so great (which it is), but because of the accompanying instruments as well. Just an amazing arrangement.
Back in the 80's there was a thrasher band 3-way battle between Megadeath, Antrax, and Metallica. At the same time, There was an honest hard metal rock group called Iron Maiden and another new one that had just released their EP, Queensryche- Those last two were who I was listening to, and I hoped all three thrasher bands would fall into oblivion, at the time. Yeah, they could play fast, but there wasn't anything in the actual songs or lyrics I could grab onto. But a few years later, Metallica changed what they were doing and I've been listening to them ever since.
9/11/2001 was a day everyone remembers. That afternoon our radio station & red cross were taking donations for requests. The first song they played was "For whom the bell tolls". The whole "Ride the lightning" album was good, that song was so fitting for the days ahead. I'm a new subscriber, today in fact. For whom the bell tolls should be required listening...
You just taught me something I didn't know about Metallica. I did not know that he lost his parents at a young age. I need to do more research apparently because I love their music
I just came across your channel last night and I freaking love it! Your reactions are so genuine and I am glad you are digging some heavy metal. I watched a bunch of your Nirvana, Metallica, and Iron Maiden videos and they are amazing man. If I could make one suggestion, you should check out the old school rock band, Thin Lizzy. Start with their song 'Opium Trail' or 'Emerald', you won't be disappointed!
I love when they pause and speak their thoughts.. i don’t see how it works any other way. Especially for new listeners, which is all of us metal heads want right? For people to give it a chance! Awesome reaction! Only suggestion, maybe rewind a second or two after pausing , so you don’t miss the climaxes … but awesome reaction!!!
Yo! Through pure chance I came across a copy of Metallica's Black album when I was in year 8 (2001). Being from a very conservative christian and sheltered upbringing, let me tell ya, it changed me as a person. The Unforgiven was always my favourite track but that whole album is absolute fucking 🔥
That's why the question did you ask in another video? What's your favorite Metallica song. No, do you see how hard that is to make a decision All their music kicks butt

As the man Polo himself here has written in the opening: "Be You, They'll Adjust." I think that's damn near perfect message for _everyone._

Man, this is the first time I caught your message at the beginning that says "Be You, They'll Adjust." That is just awesome.
James Is an unbelievable singer/songwriter/musician. I think he’s the goat of metal to be honest. Best of everything with Metallica
100% agree!!! 🤘
Not the goat Scott.. anything but

Fastest down picker ever lol, I’ve been playing for 20 years and still can’t down pick on his level 😂
You get some diagreement from Megadeath fans, but I always preferred James to Dave, no matter how they tried to convince me. My ears did that for me.

The solo in this song is amazing for real. Love the deep profound feeling this song gives.

It’s kirk hammett’s favorite too.

Definitely listin to all three together. Like another Brick in the wall ( by pink Floyd) they all blend together.
❤ Your channel and your reactions and you have great taste I 💕 Metallica s Black album its incredible work you would 💕 this whole album Polo💯🔥🚒💪⚡🎸🥁
A wonderful song for new drummers learning how to hold time and do complicated fills. There is no fat here.
That explains why I'm able to play it so well.
I just gave myself a backhanded compliment. Not sure if I should mad or happy.
@@Frostrazor happy my friend.
First time I heard it I didn’t understand it so a friend and I listened again and …………..they dedicate their lives is the best line in the song
Unforgiven❤
Cheers for the video mate 😎 👌
Please, please do The Unforgiven II & III! You have to hear the whole journey!
*This* is my all time favorite Metallica song. Gives me goosebumps every time!!💓💓
Eta; next one you should react to is Black by Pearl Jam
