The triangle front is outer armor weld in front of the sloped base layer. 80% of Bangladesh is Alluvial delta soil with hundreds of wide rivers (not a great country for heavy weapons in general), you can't use MBTs over 40+ tonnes in majority of Bangladesh. That's why we bought 44 ZTQ-15 for a light tank regiment, with plans for at least 4-5 regiments in the coming years.
I used to think this Type 15 Tank is a joke, until I saw the US Army MPF design, which is universally inferior in almost every measurable metric than Type 15 (taller, inferior gun, thinner armor despite being heavier, etc.), and still costing $10 million a piece.
Ztq 15 is still good enough to be placed in such mountaneous terrain. Small, agile, and mobility is main priority in such a high steep terrain. Its for supporting role only, not a head-to-head with the MBT, BUT, it is good enough to support MBT role bacause its small & agile, so it can use hit-n-run tactics. Because of that, 105mm weapon is still reasonable Actually, i never though that term 'light' and 'medium' tank role will rise again just like in ww2.

The Sprut and Type 15 fill the role between the MBT and the IFV (able to handle some anti-tank systems, while possessing high mobility) Also, India can't hope to thrust their tank forces in Ladakh should a war erupt, as the land area is very adverse, they dont have a large ass fight-bomber fleet or a big arsenal of long-range precision weapons to achieve air supremacy and drop their tanks via air, and MBTs won't do very well in the oxygen-deprived air of the high altitude warfare.

Bhai, Bangladesh will be looking at the VT5 instead of the Harimau tank. And Bangladesh will be purchasing another 140+ VT5 as a replacement for the Type 69G and Type 62 light tank
“Not that good for a light tank” well there’s a reason why virtually every single modern tank can’t go over 72/80 km/h. It would just come down to acceleration and agility. And 1,000 horsepower for a 30 some odd ton tank is absolutely amazing as it would have over 25 hp/ton
the designer were ask about engine power and they basically say 'there is not enough traction to make use a more powerful engine'. they think more power is useless if they can't be transfer into the ground. it smaller size, mean smaller track, so it make prefect sense for it design. more would be overkill.
You left out that ZTQ-15 can also fire gun launched tandem ATGM's which greatly increase the tanks range and lethality. The tank is also equipped with GPS, and other battle management systems.
Bangladesh bought 44 ZTQ-15 not VT5. This is for the first regiment (for evaluation like the MBT2000s 44 ordered earlier). Bangladesh has plans for 4-5 additional regiments of light tanks, which means 150+ to replace the type 59s. Bangladesh also has requirements for 4-5 regiments of medium tanks in the 45 tonnes class (unlikely to be MBT2000's).
VT-5 and type 15 light tank are not the same tank, it was popularly believed that VT-5 was the other competing design for the new light tank program that wasn’t adopted and hence was pushed to export mark instead.
The VT-5 and the VN-17 share the same hull, engine, and suspension, and from interviews with the tank designer (which may or may not have been misinterpreted), the VN-17 was the base vehicle, not the VT-5. This means what the designers originally planned was to have both a new IFV and a light tank partner for it with high degree of commonality between them. So rather than call it a loser in a tank competition, it's more likely to have been a completely different concept that the PLA rejected because they didn't need yet another AFV family regardless of how much better the 34-ton VN-17 was compared to the Type-04 family.
I actually rly like the looks of this thing. Smol MBT But tbh, all recent chinese MBTs look great, like the VT4 or Type 99 (type 99 looks kinda meh compared to the VT4 tho)
@@sonhuynh106 Type-15 is to fulfill PLA's specific need of high altitude plateau combat with a specialized power pack. VT-5 is more like a lightweight MBT for export users who wants a modern tank but either doesn't have a significant armor threat or just don't want to deploy something too heavy. Thus having better protection than the Type-15.
Well, it is said that this type of tank may be deployed at the entrance of valleys around 5000m altitude, where no MBT's engine can start. So the major enemy of this tank will be BMPs. That will make sense that it has so little armor and less firepower. A hit from MBT's APFSDS will definitely cause hull break I think.
Interestingly this tank is light enough that without the armor package a Y-20 transport aircraft can carry two of them. I don't know if that is intended but airlift capability would seem like a very good capability to have.
*... my bet is has to do with the weight (two needed to be fitted into Y - 20) - the reason for including the high - tech fire control systems is that they are light - hard kill systems are heavy*
I’ve always wondered if the reason for Chinese domestic tanks to lack armor compared to export vehicles is based off of transportation constraints. No Chinese domestic tanks have side ERA, yet they are well aware of its benefits and produce it for their customers. I’ve seen pictures from inside Chinese transport ships and it does seem like it would be impossible to add era production for the hull without removing a 4th of the amount of tanks stored.

The best choice will be use M60 along side with ZTQ15, since ZTQ15 share the exact same gun as the M60, both tanks are capable of firing DM63, M885 and so on. The latest 105mm APFSDS developed by Norinco is said able to penetrate more than 800mm of RHA steel armour 2000m away. A strong threat to T90MS.
The ZTQ15 is used for high altitude warfare where the terrain and altitude is not suitable for the T90 to operate. Thats the primary reason they made this tank. As a Chinese Admire once said, "The stuff that can come up cannot defeat this tank, and the stuff that can defeat this tank cannot come up".

@@ReviveHF They said "to the region" but there are high points and low points of the region and different terrain areas. Doesn't necessarily mean they will go face to face in specific areas. India doesn't have a tank dedicated to high altitude warfare yet while the ZTQ15 is designed for this specifically. This is why u see China confidently doing large scale live fire exercise with those tanks in that region on multiple occasions. Never mind high altitude, even at ground level India's T90 has broken down many times during the tank war games while China's older type 98s never broken down and has consistently achieved highs scores. On a side note, anything that India uses breaks down or crashes often for some reason. Like some Russian jets for example, Rus uses them just fine, then sells them to India and it starts dropping out of the sky none stop. xD

Russia sees more profit in china than india, and thus has started to lean more towards china. Putin also talked about a military alliance with china, which is real bad news for India. India is also trying to make it's weapons (which is rather slow:( ). due to this our reliance on russian weapons in the future is bound to decrease. and india not having any commercial goods to offer to russia, while china having a lot of it, just pushes russia away from us. Plus due to the Border standoff in Ladakh initiated by china, India has automatically been pushed closer to US. another reason for this is that quality of Russian weapons is not good, and these weapons require a lot of maintanence, which eats up a lot of our defence budget. I say India should stop buying any weapons, and make our own as we have the capability to do so. we have our allies to help us in case china decided to invade us, which will be dealt with the same force as china will use against us :D. So, with its heavier armour package, it weights around 36 tons, 4 less than a Leopard 1 while offering better protection, I imagine similar mobility, and looking cooler. Technology has indeed, advanced.
The tank is designed to be used against India on high elevation. India don't have much tank that can fight well at 4000m high mountain, so era protection would be enough for this tank since most threat will be from shoulder heat launcher and mounted missile launcher.
The Chinese packing so much high-tech sensor equipment into Type 15 is in part a sort of test/learning aid for technical integration (and use) of these systems. The Chinese are currently working on an Armata-style next-gen MBT plattform with a two-man crew, unmanned turret and significant increases in sensor systems and their integration and automatization. Makes sense they'd use earlier projects like Type 15 to gather potentially useful experience for that. In terms of mobility, the thing that stands out for Type 15 is that it has a p/w-ratio of ~30hp/ton, which should be immensely useful when traversing hilly or mountaineous terrain.

You should understand the Type 15/ZTQ-15 light tank was suppose to deploy in China-Indian border near the the mountains and encounter heavy tanks like t-90 or t-72 are very low change and must commong treat are from rpg and AT missiles.
1. VT5 is not an export version of ZTQ15, they designed for different combat environments. 2. ZTQ15 has a 2-stage turbocharging engine which allows it to operate at 5000m without losing much power. 3. ZTQ15s are mainly deployed at plateau over 5000m asl where Indian T72/90s don't exist (ZTZ99s and Indian T72s are deployed at ~4000m areas).
As a Chinese, I am pretty critical to ZTQ-15. Not because the performance of it, which is alright, but the fact that it was not ready when it was needed. For example, ZTZ-96 was deployed during the 1996 Taiwan Strait Crisis. ZTZ-99 was seen on PRC-DPRK border during the 1999 North Korean Missile Crisis. What these events have in common is the equipments that can provide deterrence are in play when they are needed. ZTQ-15, on the other hand, was deployed too late in 2020 and missed the peak of India-PRC border conflict. The PLA had to mobilise ZTZ-99 to kargilik county to deter Indian armoured division. In fact, since ZTQ-15 was late to the party, PLA has only so far equipped one 3 companies of ZTQ-15. I actually don't think the tank would be massed produced as China is working on gen 4 tanks now. Both ZTZ-99A and ZTQ-15 are going to lose its purpose in 5 to 10 years.
It makes sense for them. The entire Abrams family of tanks is in the process of being replaced, and USMC M1A1s are some of the oldest Abrams around. With F-35 and other upgrades to amphibious ships, the USMC has never had more strike options than they do now. At the same time, in exercises US Army Stryker Brigade Combat Teams have displayed a high degree of anti-armor capability in a light strategic mobility force without proper MBTs. The look of the USMC, with the quantum leap in native strike capability with F-35 and more heavily armed amphibious ships, is that they are going to use the Amphibious Combat Vehicle program to move to a more lightly armored force similar to Stryker BCTs. This is generally in line with the shift in the Marine Corps to being more uniquely focused on amphibious operations and quick reaction, rather than being a second Army with an amphibious flavor. They are simply leaving heavy mechanized combat with MBTs and heavy IFVs to the Army, and returning to their roots.

@@Joshua_N-A I don't know that every Marine will have an AT4, but I could see them being more liberal with support weapons. Perhaps like Swedish mechanized infantry, they can use a weapons locker setup to have extra weapons on hand as each platoon requires them. The jump up to 50mm might be seen as a compromise in place of a 105mm tank gun, especially if they spread lots of anti-armor weapons across the force in the dismounted troops, on infantry carriers, and dedicated anti-armor vehicles. I know that the Army has big problems with the durability of Striker mobile guns while firing 105mm, I'm not sure if the SuperAV that the ACV is being derived from is more mechanically suitable. It's going to be a cost-benefit analysis. Comes down to how valuable the 105mm gun is in combat compared to how much logistical resources it takes to field it.

Ok, time to point out your mistakes. 1. ZTQ-15 and VT-5 are two completely different tanks developed by two different institutes. The majority of the footage shown, as well as the thumbnail, portray the VT-5, not the ZTQ-15. 2. There are two versions of the ZTQ-15: a base version, also known as the parade version as it was seen during the national day parade, and an upgraded version. The base version does NOT have ERA as the additional armour mounted is applique armour. It also does not have CITV and instead has a commander's sight similar to the one found on the Type 88 MBT. The upgraded version does have ERA and CITV with a 2nd gen thermal imager. It also has an upgraded RWS that can mount a 35mm MGL and a heavy machine gun at the same time. 3. China has 105mm APFSDS that can penetrate ~500mm. So technically, the ZTQ-15 has better firepower than the Indian T-90s with their mango ammunition.
Surely a 30mm cannon firing AP rounds will threaten it even if it has a hard kill system and those are much more common than MBTs. But i agree a active kill system would be a great addition.

USMC doesn't want new tanks, they want integrated light armored combined arms forces like Stryker BCTs that can be more strategically mobile while still conducting high tempo anti-armor engagement using ATGMs and probably wheeled 105mm guns as well, in environments that MBTs can't operate well in. That's where the ACV program is aimed, at a common family of amphibious light armored vehicles. They also feel comfortable doing this now because F-35Bs, Mk 41 VLS on San Antonio-class amphibious assault ships, and upgraded ATACMS missiles have the USMC rolling in more organic fire support than they've ever had before. The triangle front is outer armor weld in front of the sloped base layer. The Sprut and Type 15 fill the role between the MBT and the IFV (able to handle some anti-tank systems, while possessing high mobility)
Also, India can't hope to thrust their tank forces in Ladakh should a war erupt, as the land area is very adverse, they dont have a large ass fight-bomber fleet or a big arsenal of long-range precision weapons to achieve air supremacy and drop their tanks via air, and MBTs won't do very well in the oxygen-deprived air of the high altitude warfare.

@@donovanchau3483 Generally our army don't develope one specific system too deep, we don't really spend time on add-on kits, we tend to go for next gen tech step by step, just to make sure we keep up with international standard, Chinese army equipment usually retire in a short time since 2000, there are new stuff come out every few years, so I guess there is no need to upgrade a decent tank to make it perfect, we just go for another platform with more possibility. @CR BZ M60 still can be very useful if upgraded, ZTQ15 on the other hand has less RHA thickness means any hit on the weak spot can be very catastrophic. @ALEX HUANG It's called Crew Weapon Station.
The ZTQ15 is used for high altitude warfare where the terrain and altitude is not suitable for the T90 to operate. Thats the primary reason they made this tank. @@zszs100 Well, India did sent T72 and T90S up to the mountains to face ZTQ15,. Not surprisingly, these two type of tanks suffered badly due to the engine limitations, while ZTQ15 still functioning well.
Like some Russian jets for example, Rus uses them just fine, then sells them to India and it starts dropping out of the sky none stop. xD

Talking about the ignorant people, the UA-camr is russian. My personal opinion about russia is that Russia-india relations are only limited to profit now. The current russia is not the USSR. The current russia only looks profits, as their economy is badly hit by sanctions and the break up of USSR 30yrs back.

It's very different from VT-5.
Last time i was here the m-84 was not obsolete
4. PLA uses 105mm DTC-2 which offers more penetration than BTA-2. BTA-2 is the export version of DTC-2.
I think VT-5 also has real armor, not just ERA or structure armor
Did mao do it all wrong? He had nothing and he was fighting everybody.
A light tank, for deploying by air or sea, light enough for island operation. Meanwhile US Marines wanna get rid of its armored corp.
@@ultraman5168 Japan recently adopting the Type 16 MCV, a wheeled light tank. Designed for urban, airborne and outlying island defense equipped with 105mm gun. Prior to this, only the Type 74 MBT is light enough to be air or sea transported that have heavy firepower.
I read that the USMC wants to have bigger guns on the upcoming ACV, up to 50mm if they want more firepower. Do you think each marine should carry an AT4 disposable rocket launcher individually in addition to Javelin teams?
Hey Guys, I see a lot of people are still trolling the Arjun MBT. Guys it’s an endeavour of my country to build something on its own.
Remember we had to start somewhere. And it’s definitely a start and it’s definitely going to get better.
Also, I see a lot of people who are trolling the Arjun MBT are from countries who have barely tried to build their own indigenous tech or even be able to buy tech from others. Remember, India can do both.
Comments made for the sake of casual fun is all good, but don’t try to insult someone’s endeavour. Cheers 🍻
Most Chinese are disappointed by how thin the armor is, we thought Type 15 was a light-weight MBT
Aside from soviet tanks new and old (T-14) and possibly the Japanese type 10, what other modern mbt can be considered light?
I've always assumed that making light weight mbt is just extremely expensive hence why Russians design the T-14 fundamentally different from other contemporaries unless they go the Japanese route and use exotic metal composition jacking the price up to infinity.
@@kai-jf2vd Lighter tanks are great for air lifting thus increase it's strategic value.
Light cargo plane such as C130 can lift a single type 15, C17 or Y20 with better engine can lift 2 type 15.
@@fanyechao2761 aah airdrop tanks, I don't think it's possible to get mbt level protection for airdops and most that do get airdrops tend to be ifv such as the bmp. If the type 15 can be airdrop and provide sufficient enough protection from chemical rounds it can work well as an airborne assault vehicle especially since it can fire apfsds to unsuspecting tanks side, for what it's worth it's not too bad probably an m118 stryker equivalent in mobility. Tbh for the protection it provides it should've just been an ifv with offensive capabilities.
@@kai-jf2vd Air lifting is not air dropping, air lifting need an airfield to operate. If you do not air drop, then you to use high way or railway or ships to travel thousand of KM, and that can take months
@@fanyechao2761 sorry my bad but talking within context of airlifting, Im aware that even the abrams despite being really heavy can be carried by the c-17 while not being the most efficient method I assume since it's most often done on rails and cargo ships. Maybe I'm just shortsighted but I don't really see the logistics advantage of possibly one additional tank on the c-17 for airlifting so my mind kind of automatically assumed you meant airdrop my bad. Regardless light tanks has its use considering china geography is mountainous.
The ZTQ-15 is more arguably a mmwt, like the Kaplan, imo.
Also, a medium/lightweight tank doesn't really need to be able to shrug off apfsds, only heat/he projectiles, as it, realistically, isn't designed to go head to head with MBTs, but are better with going along routes that cannot support the weight of an MBT and engaging infantry or flanking maneuvers of mbts.
Still is a nice piece of kit for what it is.

Sprut SD Can be droped from a plane, has decent FCS and can swim, something possible but coasted armor, it doesn't mean that it is doomed, an APS would transform the sprut into a nightmare behind enemy lines.
5:39 Your face after you see the Arjun tank on the frontline
The 220mm pen APFSDS round you mentioned is an export round, the Chinese military probably uses a better round.
220 at 2km at 60 degree's is about on par with m900 which represents the absolute limit of standard length 105mm ammo. So it's likely the ammo they export is the ammo they use for the Type 15
@@nemisous83 The export version is BTA-2 as shown in the video. However, PLA uses 105mm DTC-2 which does have more pen.
@@2waterbottles227 the only difference between the BTA-2 and DTC-2 is the composition of the rod the export one being tungsten and the PLA one being DU however the penetration difference isnt that much more because DU isnt as dense as Tungsten however have other properties that make it ideal.

Source for penetration?
>Technically have better firepower
Do you realize that ztq-15 will get penetrated everywhere, even by mango rounds?
@@HMSNeptun I said better firpower not better protection
@@georgedroid39 no it doesn't have better firepower.
Surely a 30mm cannon firing AP rounds will threaten it even if it has a hard kill system and those are much more common than MBTs. But i agree a active kill system would be a great addition.
It's a cute tank.
Bangladesh is getting the related export version the VT-5 (it is equipped with ERA).
lol
I heard that the VT-5 was a competing design to the ZTQ-15 design the winner became the ZTQ-15 and loser became an export tank VT-5. Dunno if its true though.
That what I heard in China as well.
This kind of practice is pretty common in Chinese military industry so it’s probably true
no, it's not true. it's kinda a western thinking. There isn't a competing relationship between vt-5 and ztq-15
I see this as a tank that fights other light tanks and amour fighting vehicles. But isn’t supposed to go against modern mbts , it could hold its own for a while against them , but its thin Armour and smaller gun wont last . Over all this is a good tank .

When will the ZTQ 15 become available in the Chinese technology tree in War Thunder?
5:18 ok i see why the memes about the Arjun, lol, they did put it a turban as turret?
It is a Leo 2A4 turret on a Chally chassis, mounting a 120mm rifled gun. It was obsolete from the start, due to its thin armor and underwhelming gun.
The Mk. 2 upgrade package sought to improve it by adding on an external armor package. However, this package did not armor a large piece of the turret face, which was already vulnerable as-is.
@@nibs7252 *crappy copy of the 2A4 turret

So in which metallurgy lab did you get to test the composition and efficacy of that "knock-off" armor? Or are you pulling out imagination out of your ...?
It was for parade purpose
They could definitely make the armour lighter by using less steel, small amounts of titanium, kevlar and some ceramics.
Using ceramics in tanks isn't really a good idea, as it deteriorates quickly and its effectiveness is greatly reduced even by non penetrating shots.
It cracks, basically.

Yeah, but if they're making this tank to engage the US marine corps-which doesn't have any tanks-then it doesn't matter if it can't protect from APFSDS
That quantum leap in strike capability over the older Harriers and lightly armed amphibious ships gives the USMC a lot of room to be a leaner and faster landing force.
