So the eyepatch is basically a holdover from the voidmages, rather than the original black mages. The purpose was to narrow their field of view to reduce the chances of accidentally making eye contact with voidsent and thus avoid being charmed via magic. This is also what the wide hat brim is for, so that a simple head tilt could remove their eyeline from sight easily. Sorry, you said the word lore, I couldn't help myself it just burst out of me.
Does anyone remember the anime With that girl with that 1 eye. That kept streaming explosion and falls down after every cast of it. I'm pretty sure they put that on the game for that reason. Lol.
As my main, Astrologian is a braindead job for me now… but fuck Scholar. I learnt Summoner first then remembered Scholar levels WITH it and understood NOTHING so screw that I’ll keep my Astro, Sage, and… some day I’ll touch white mage, lol
Trolling your Monk by hitting them with the attack speed card was great. It cut their GCD down so hard they'd run out of TP and couldn't do weaponskills.
I had a friend who did this just to show why he shouldn't give it to me and when I sat at 0 TP I was so sad All this speed, and nothing to do with it ;_;
Black mages have eye patches and big hats and stuff because they used it to prevent/limit the hold voidsent had/could get on them back when black mages were summoning and dealing with voidsent
The big hats shield their eyes from the blinding holy spells cast by White Mages during the War of the Magi, and the eyepatches are because some mages put an extra materia into their eye socket.
Bard definitely only has like 3 rng pools to pick from. Any real bard main knows it, subconsciously if not fully aware. My fingers know before my brain does which rng pool I'm in and I'm already pressing the proc right as it comes up every time without realizing because it really doesn't change that often lol. Bard is the only physrange job that needs a braincell to play optimally. With dnc and mch, you don't have to worry about where to drift your songs for perfect song uptime and to still have party buffs and burst line up properly. And yes, in Abyssos, you do need to drift songs to keep uptime.
To be fair, that was changed a fair amount in EW. It used to be a lot more dynamic, since it was a lower proc chance _and_ you had two DoTs fueling those chances (since it used to be based on DoT ticks). So you had the chances of double procs, and the proc rate was much less consistent. Now that it's 80% chance every 3 seconds, the proc rate is super smooth. It's RNG in name, but as you point out, it's only _barely_ RNG. Dancers have more active rotational RNG than Bards at this point.
As a SCH main I remember when they took Energy Drain from us I left it on my bar out of spite, but then it really did return! keep the Kaiten vigil strong SAM mains this SCH will have your back no matter how many aoes you step in.
I haven't played 14 in years but I remember the reason I went SCH main was because I just gave up on people stepping out of AoEs. Made a bunch of macros to have my fairy keep the main tank healed while I put shields on all the DPS playing with First Person mods. Only logical explanation.
Legit tip I wish more people knew as a Bard, if you pay attention to your song's duration you can predict when to use iron jaws to reproc your dots without having to keep track of 3 timers you only have to keep track of the one since all of them are 45 seconds, just make sure when you use the song you either iron jaws and weave your song in or do the reverse.
Sadly, doesn't _perfectly_ line up, since you don't actually want all of your songs to run the full duration. First, you want to align with the 2m cycle, and 3x 45s songs is 2m15s. That's a lot of drift. Second, the last 3 seconds of a song are a complete waste, since you can't get a proc after the song hits 3s (they procs can happen every 3s during the song, but not as it expires). Lastly, the songs are not made equal, so you generally run Minuet and Paeon to just past 42s (ie. cycle when they have less than 3s remaining), and short-change Ballad, running it only long enough to hit the 2m cycle, which is generally 30-35s. So if you keep your refreshes and songs aligned, and do your songs properly, you'll be early refreshing (not the end of the world, over the course of a 10 minutes fight, you'll only lose 1 or _maybe_ 2 extra GCDs). Just make sure you do it that way, with the early refreshes, and you're not waiting for each of your songs to expire (or nearly expire) to refresh, as that'll push you way off the 2-minute timing window. Not only does this tank your damage, since you're not aligning your biggest hits and your best buffs with the other raid buffs, but since Bards are heavy support emphasis, you'll also tank the overall group damage by pushing your own 2-minutes (notably, Finale, which _relies_ on the song cycle) out of the 2-minute window, and providing the inferior Paeon or Ballad buff instead of the Minuet buff during their CD windows.
I was astro main for a long time. I had the honor of playing while the cards were all unique and I loved it. Thinking IS enjoyable to me. All the card combos and every time I had the aoe boosted bole or spear I felt so happy. Then they changed it. No more fun combos... Then they took Nocturnal Sect away... the way I had managed to solo Ifrit extreme to get my first ever horse at 60... they took away the class I loved. So while I maxed it. It pains me to play it. Edit: I'm just editing to say. Wow, I'm in pain because I miss the pain. Ironic...
I didn't try astro before the card system was redesigned but I love playing it nowadays. I love being a healer and secondary love for support buff kind of roles in other games. Astro just feels natural to me that I get to heal, buff my party, and do damage myself.
Blackmages fun starts at level 60 when you get fire IV. It definately is not great if you are learning fights, but if you know the fights and timing for bosses Blackmage feels damn good when you get it right.
@@RealElSteino It's one of the highest damage dealers at 70. Did you finish all your job quest to unlock everything? The only ones that could possibly be higher might be Sam and Reaper.
How the job has fallen. I remember when enochian was a skill with 30s cd and if you dropped out of rotation it took 15s to get it back up (if you had enochian, if it was on cd then you could only sit there lamenting how bad of a player you are and everyone would see)
@@skwjisin I'm loving MCH, one of the better gun classes in my opinion. As someone who usually likes to play the classic glass cannon mage, I'm not really fan of BLM. The old school turret caster just doesn't mesh well with how heavy they have been going in on movement mechanics.
Or when they are desperately running for the edge of an arena to avoid an aoe and are NOT expecting that last-second movement speed boost 😘 Oh wait, we were talking about BRD, not SCH...well, that's just boring then.
@@heikillakeitti lol it’s really good if your lucky but I haven’t played it since it changed but before it was pure luck what card you got. As a healer you are super busy anyway, I couldn’t be bothered. Whm heals are good enough
@@unabashedlybroken6789 i just recently started to play and didn't even get the chance to use the old astro cards :( i feel like those would have been even more fun as I like the existing ones already (and sometimes find it boring as there is kind of like two opinions in the cards) I started as WHM but then felt like it was too boring and found astro!
Note this is from the perspective of standard Dungeon roulettes and not high tier play. Controversial opinion, WHM is actually horrible. I've spent the past few months leveling my classes to 90 and WHM seems to be the only one where it's both utterly boring and extremely difficult. Hear me out, the when I have a tank who's trash and doesn't use mitigations I have to constantly spam cure 2 (in early dungeons), otherwise he dies instantly leaving me no room for DPS or using any other skill. Meaning I'm standing there pushing 1 button over and over and over again with no thought. It's boring and annoying. If the tank is even "average" at his job I at least get to push 3 buttons C2, holy, and dots.
Love that all jobs mentioned here except Black Mage are what I play for each role I play RDM for my caster role but I can't count so take that as you will
I'm an astrologian main and all I can say is: progging with this job is painful. Not only you have to learn new mechs, but you always have to heal (obviously) AND buff your team. I got to a point in which I started to believe that there's a part of my brain that enjoys pain
As an AST main I can confirm that I've reached a point where everything I do is muscular memory combined with visual memory and I don't need to think anymore. When I see a card, I know immediately for which party member it is. All you need to do is git gud lol. :p I even heal other teams in alliance raids when they don't really need to just because I can. And I'm not playing it for yugioh, I'm playing it for the fortune teller aesthetic ;) (also because I'm tired of throwing rocks when I don't heal...).
Unfortunately, I do have trouble with Ast. I don't have enough braincells to keep an eye on my party, heal properly, pull cards on cooldown, and use them properly. Also, yes, Black Mage is my bane. I only have it to level 70, and it felt so horrible to level. I'll probably just slowly level it with MS Rolo and Weekly Tails.
AST is the ONLY job in the game I actually believe has button bloat. I love the job, wish I was better at it. But even I have problems with the bloat. Signed, "too busy job" DRG main. Oh and Kaiten was worthless. Literally didn't change the job. Hagakure meanwhile...
@@TriangularPrism bruh I think Sam damage was way better before, midare and ogi could crit for double the amount compared to post kaiten removal, now they both hit like wet noodles unless you have a lot of raid buffs (which sam is so reliant on now).
The black mage eyepatch thing is to deal with voidsent that have optic magicks that require sight. The eyepatch lowers the chances of accidentally looking into one's eyes, same with the wide brim of the hats.
As an enjoyer of Black Mage and doing fights blind, I love challenging myself by doing normal raids blind and suffer the consequences. Surprisingly fun so long as you learn the mechanics on the way. PS: Eyepatch = Stronger Flares
"Everyone knows that when you mess up rotation it makes you wanna... commit murder." I was gonna say suicide, but yeah. I feel that. "All right guys, I messed up my rotation, wall it."
Legit the only reason I like AST is because I get super distracted on any of the other healers and it at least gives me something to think about and stay focused on healing. But if I get tired of thinking, Selene is always there for me.
The true power of pld is seeing how long you can survive with max vuln stacks and annoy healers by using clem lol, but in all seriousness yes while lacking in more flashy skills and higher damage (ew has fixed that a bit) their mitigation and reliability especially for those new to the tank role I would highly recommend pld first
I let out a hard guffaw when I heard black mage come up at the end. That is my main job and the first one I leveled with during ARR MSQ and post MSQ. 😆
yes, they gonna rework PLD in order to favor more to the 2 minute burst window stuffs Especially since they start to love design boss with big size target rings, while also reducing downtime as much as they possibly could.
I'm an astro main since stormblood, fell in love with it due to flashiness, its true I also like the job cause its fast and keeps you busy, I found whm too simple playstyle for me. But if they ever introduce death dark healer type i might switch to that. Astro/reaper is
On a real note as to not play AST (my main that they keep changing and the only healer i'll play) is that it's just undertuned. Its damage is the lowest of all the healers, and you have to overperform in both heals and support (cards) to still be 'mid' of the group. Sure it's a pure healer but WHM will always heal more, and do more damage. Even the WHM HoTs are better. I'd assume the class's damage is low in favor of giving cards to other players so that it evens out the total outgoing dps of the dungeon/raid equivalent to a group without an AST. But i feel like it doesnt even work like that since the cards give what... a 6% damage increase for like 15 seconds or something? Because AST is a complicated class no one wants to seriously learn, or even play, on the side of it underperforming (which ppl might not even be able to tell), is why it's the healer you shouldnt play
I find SAGE fun as hell but i havent really touched AST at all, i have it at lvl 68 by lvling it through daily frontline bonuses but it just feels so clunky, or maybe its because i havent completed the lvl 45 job quest and im missing 5 skills :/
At the 25th, 50th, and 99th percentiles, WHM contributes 4.5k, 5.5k, and 6.4k rDPS. At those same percentiles, AST contributes 4.5k, 5.1k, and 6.8k rDPS. When looking at HPS, AST outperforms WHM at every percentile. The issue isn't that AST is underperforming, it's that every rDPS job is automatically shit in DF/PF because nobody can keep their burst aligned, so you will never generate enough rDPS to justify AST's low nDPS, the same argument can be done for high nDPS jobs like SAM/RPR/BLM versus high rDPS jobs like NIN/DRG/DNC. All the top 10 ASTs for every fight are generating ~2,000 DPS from buffs alone and are totaling 7k-7.5k rDPS. For comparison, out of the tens of thousands of WHM players in this game, ONE (1) ever hit 7k rDPS in one fight. Might want to look at the numbers before talking out of your ass, "high skill ceiling" =/= "undertuned"...
@@PossiblyMG Ok then, i woulda appreciated the facts NICELY but since u gatta end it with me 'talking out my ass' when i clearly main the fking job i'll argue back. Tell me how I healed my ass off in a raid with better gear than a WHM and he still outhealed me by far? And in damage? In fact even the shield healers always out damaged me in other raids. You probably looked up all those rDPS numbers before u sent ur message to me. I'll bet u anything AST got buffed in heals and damage since I last played ff14 in EW cuz these numbers are too high from what I last saw. Everywhere I saw on youtube, AST was at the bottom. U still think i'm talking out my ass? My argument is based on facts just as yours, just without your tryhard statistics
@@sirkyrxon936 you're being really vague with your anecdotes, it's impossible to take it as a valid point. By what metric where these healers "outhealing" and "outdamaging" you? nDPS, aDPS, or rDPS? What was each healer's overheal%, and how was it distributed? Each metric builds a completely different story. Do you have an anonymous log of you playing astro showing you are keeping 100% GCD and combust uptime and playing cards correctly under DPS burst instead of just throwing them out for the sake of it? Maining a job doesn't mean you are good at it or your opinion about the state of the job is valid. Astro didn't get any buffs because even the devs are aware that in optimized environments and in parties with high performing players, astro contributes more rDPS and more aHPS than white mage. Again, high skill ceiling does not equal undertuned, and buffing astro would legitimately break the job for week 1 progging and competitive racing groups. Don't believe me? You can look at the proof yourself: P8S2 statistics AST rDPS percentiles: www.fflogs.com/zone/statistics/49#boss=87&class=Global&spec=Astrologian&dataset=100 WHM rDPS percentiles: www.fflogs.com/zone/statistics/49#boss=87&class=Global&spec=WhiteMage&dataset=100 notice how astro outperforms white mage at every percentile, and this is also the case for healing: AST aHPS percentiles: www.fflogs.com/zone/statistics/49#boss=87&metric=hps&class=Global&spec=Astrologian&dataset=100 WHM aHPS percentiles: www.fflogs.com/zone/statistics/49#boss=87&metric=hps&class=Global&spec=WhiteMage&dataset=100 P4S2 rankings AST rDPS leaderboards: www.fflogs.com/zone/rankings/44#metric=dps&class=Global&spec=Astrologian&boss=82&partition=1 WHM rDPS leaderboards: www.fflogs.com/zone/rankings/44#metric=dps&class=Global&spec=WhiteMage&boss=82 You say "AST was at the bottom." Bottom of what? Enmity ranking? The ACT reading for aDPS, which astro is naturally low on because 20-30% of their contributing damage is redistributed by buffs? All I'm getting out of your opinions is that you haven't bothered to even try optimizing astro in any relevant content, or most of this would be self evident. It's completely fine for low nDPS, high rDPS jobs to only thrive in organized settings like a static and for high nDPS, low rDPS jobs to primarily thrive in party finder/duty finder while being swapped out for other jobs in organized settings.
They actually made Ast cards easier. We used to have different buffs to each, like how Bole would increase defenses, Spire sped up attacks, and Balance was the greatest damage buff of all time.
@@webdeveloper42 Yup, doesn't help that the other cards were useless if the rest of the party were properly equipped or not bad. Also better to go for aoe balance buff over the rest or 2x duration buff of any kind.
I love being a PLD personally. Few things feel as good as the clutches you can pull off when your fellow party members die to mechanics. Being an off tank PLD in high end content means you're now the healer when the healers eat shit, and now you're the only thing keeping the main tank and DPS alive. I also enjoy DRK and GNB for their rotations (and weapons), but that sudden shift from tank to tank/healer, tank/dps, or tank/healer/dps has earned me many commendations

I've been playing PLD lately, what's important is keeping your goring blade up and again somewhere at the end of flight. If you want to be punished, it's GNB. oops I don't have 2 cartridges for double down. double oops my no mercy is drifting and I used all my burst unbuffed. Because PLD damage is trash, I mean flat and unbursty. It is less punishing if you make a mistake. At worst you a miss goring and 1 atonement in flight. Just forget it and go into requiescat.
I wonder if beast tamer will be a job eventually *similar to how hunter is in wow but with the gear set of Lyon*. That or geomancer *many are saying geomancer could be the next*
The lore reason behind the eye patch is two fold! Firstly back in 1.0 Old black mages used to remove an eye and replace it with materia for extra bewms In Arr onwards it’s there to help prevent eye contact with voidsent (same with the large brim) and is a carry over from the (void) black mages of Machi and is kept out of tradition
I was surprised by this list because EVERY class besides magic dps is the class I consider to play on those roles. The emotional damage was high in this video...
Having played old Astro, trust me. You don't miss those cards. Nobody does. They were nearly all worthless if they weren't named Balance. Increasing attack speed was a good way to get raged at since you would mess up where people were in their rotation for mechanics, and bole/ewer/spire were meme cards that only existed to buff balance. Balance fishing is *still* a meme that lives on even if it isn't a thing anymore because of how much it defined the job and kneecapped it's overall potential. I'm really scared when they revamp the job that we'll go back, because it was a god awful mess of a system that made Ast insanely inconsistent on the util it could bring and it's existence back then wholly depended on Whm being the worst job in the game.
I played old astro and thought it was so much more flavorful than the current iteration. The cards all felt different and interesting as opposed to just give x person tiny about of damage.
Im a paladin main and I think you're just jealous we have the most awesome looking skills! We got Unlimited Blade Works baby! On the other hand, I will never ever play a gunbreaker coz my unga bunga brain gets taxed to the limit with so much buttons to press. I hate thinking and gunbreakers not only forces me to think, it also breaks my fingers.
What's the name of the song playing in the background during the Paladin part (roughly 6:17)? I know it's from Shadowbringers, and I can see where/when it plays, but I don't remember the song title.
Gotta say, I agree with everything here but AST. I'll admit, I do forget the cards every now and then, and get annoyed when I don't get the seals I need for my burst start, but over than that it's fun! I love the aesthetics of it, and it's way easy for me to play. (Just put regens up and away we go lol) Sage is my second pick for fave healer/shield heal, and I can smack buttons and have it do fun shit. Scholar is just UGH for complications and annoyance. As for BLM, I'll admit here I am totally biased as it's been my main ever since I started over 4 years ago, and it makes me happy to make things go BOOM. Buuut the whole basically turning into a turret to do the BOOM has gotten more and more complicated with several of these newer fights. I've honestly picked up Summoner for raids (both 8 and 24 man) now so I can have more mobility and learn the fights before going back to BLM to blow shit up more effectively. So yeah, totally accurate on that, even if it hurts my heart to say it. And one last thing, love the humor you put out in the new format! Loved that switchblade flip being so smooth and making me laugh. Hope you didn't hurt yourself trying the trick for some takes xP
But how do you balance the fact that on paper, AST has the lowest damage potency of all healers? Sure you can buff yourself with astrodyne, but when it's on CD, you don't get the buff from it.

also turn your sounds up b/c your abilities make a noise when they proc
It's also efficient to early reapply iron jaws as the last gcd under 2min buffs since the dots snapshot your buffs for the duration
Im just glad all classes are balanced enough and viable compared to other mmos
I was astro main for a long time. I had the honor of playing while the cards were all unique and I loved it. Thinking IS enjoyable to me. All the card combos and every time I had the aoe boosted bole or spear I felt so happy. Then they changed it. No more fun combos... Then they took Nocturnal Sect away... the way I had managed to solo Ifrit extreme to get my first ever horse at 60... they took away the class I loved. So while I maxed it. It pains me to play it.
Edit: I'm just editing to say. Wow, I'm in pain because I miss the pain. Ironic...
I'm the same way. I dropped AST when it became near autopilot. I miss getting creative with those cards.
I literally play only 5 jobs and all those jobs are listed here... I agree
"Dark Knight and Warrior have the big weapons"
*Me looking at my Xiphias Eureka*: You're damn right we do
So much pain we've been through to get it because, let's face it, we started eureka just for that weapon
Level 70 makes it really good with triples and poly.
BLM damage on 70 is awful
@@RealElSteino It's one of the highest damage dealers at 70. Did you finish all your job quest to unlock everything? The only ones that could possibly be higher might be Sam and Reaper.

black mage is quite good actually, huge damage...and even if I fall out of my rotation I can get it back fair quickly. it is so far my fav job
How the job has fallen. I remember when enochian was a skill with 30s cd and if you dropped out of rotation it took 15s to get it back up (if you had enochian, if it was on cd then you could only sit there lamenting how bad of a player you are and everyone would see)
@@NakedRadish I personally think the worst job is machinist and summoner....summoners is so boring now that I don't play it anymore .....
@@NakedRadish the true pain of the BLM was seeing that enochian fade and a timer still on the hotbar. Brings you more rage than a soulsborne game
@@skwjisin I'm loving MCH, one of the better gun classes in my opinion. As someone who usually likes to play the classic glass cannon mage, I'm not really fan of BLM. The old school turret caster just doesn't mesh well with how heavy they have been going in on movement mechanics.
Never underestimate the ability to buff movement speed of your team-mates, especially if someone got left behind or had to afk briefly.
Or when they are desperately running for the edge of an arena to avoid an aoe and are NOT expecting that last-second movement speed boost 😘
Oh wait, we were talking about BRD, not SCH...well, that's just boring then.

Well white mage is supposed to be the SIMPLE AND EASY support class brother astrological is right up your alley
Love that all jobs mentioned here except Black Mage are what I play for each role
I play RDM for my caster role but I can't count so take that as you will
Kaiten, I can still feel it.
This is not right! It was ours!
I'm an astrologian main and all I can say is: progging with this job is painful. Not only you have to learn new mechs, but you always have to heal (obviously) AND buff your team. I got to a point in which I started to believe that there's a part of my brain that enjoys pain
amen brother
As an AST main I can confirm that I've reached a point where everything I do is muscular memory combined with visual memory and I don't need to think anymore. When I see a card, I know immediately for which party member it is. All you need to do is git gud lol. :p
I even heal other teams in alliance raids when they don't really need to just because I can.
And I'm not playing it for yugioh, I'm playing it for the fortune teller aesthetic ;) (also because I'm tired of throwing rocks when I don't heal...).
Lol shots fired
GOD, I feel that so much. The throwing rocks part. I'm not anywhere near the level you're describing yet.
I almost reacted myself too quickly to the AST comments, but I found the Dps in this comment perfectly validates why we play AST.
Unfortunately, I do have trouble with Ast. I don't have enough braincells to keep an eye on my party, heal properly, pull cards on cooldown, and use them properly.
Also, yes, Black Mage is my bane. I only have it to level 70, and it felt so horrible to level. I'll probably just slowly level it with MS Rolo and Weekly Tails.
just let your party die for the sake of your cards :D

The black mage eyepatch thing is to deal with voidsent that have optic magicks that require sight. The eyepatch lowers the chances of accidentally looking into one's eyes, same with the wide brim of the hats.
As an enjoyer of Black Mage and doing fights blind, I love challenging myself by doing normal raids blind and suffer the consequences. Surprisingly fun so long as you learn the mechanics on the way.

Shoot. I loved most of these jobs during Stormblood. 3 years later, I'm sad about AST, SAM, and BRD. They're patching PAL?
yes, they gonna rework PLD in order to favor more to the 2 minute burst window stuffs
Especially since they start to love design boss with big size target rings, while also reducing downtime as much as they possibly could.
Well it doesn't matter if I miss a skill in my rotation because my damage will still be fine for content.

You can look at the proof yourself:

notice how astro outperforms white mage at every percentile, and this is also the case for healing:

You say "AST was at the bottom." Bottom of what? Enmity ranking? The ACT reading for aDPS, which astro is naturally low on because 20-30% of their contributing damage is redistributed by buffs? All I'm getting out of your opinions is that you haven't bothered to even try optimizing astro in any relevant content, or most of this would be self evident. It's completely fine for low nDPS, high rDPS jobs to only thrive in organized settings like a static and for high nDPS, low rDPS jobs to primarily thrive in party finder/duty finder while being swapped out for other jobs in organized settings.
I like how the first 3 jobs mentions are literally the one I am leveling up rn
They actually made Ast cards easier. We used to have different buffs to each, like how Bole would increase defenses, Spire sped up attacks, and Balance was the greatest damage buff of all time.
Balance was cracked, felt so good to draw. Problem was the other cards
@@webdeveloper42 preach!

I wonder if beast tamer will be a job eventually *similar to how hunter is in wow but with the gear set of Lyon*. That or geomancer *many are saying geomancer could be the next*
Well I got good news for ya lol
Do we have rotation optimizations? I have 2 years playing and didn't know.
But isn't that toxic?
The lore reason behind the eye patch is two fold!
Firstly back in 1.0 Old black mages used to remove an eye and replace it with materia for extra bewms
In Arr onwards it’s there to help prevent eye contact with voidsent (same with the large brim) and is a carry over from the (void) black mages of Machi and is kept out of tradition
Which i find HILARIOUS because after the mother of black magic said big hats are dumb i cant wear pointy hats anymore
"Kids these days and their stupid hats, back in my day we could divert meteors without the black magic of voidsent"
