Hey friends, today I wanted to see how my live band settings for my Mark IVb stacked up with an older USA made Peavey 6505+. The riff is from my band's song Release, reamped and level matched through my 2002 Recto Traditional 4x12 and micd with an E609. There's a noise gate in front and it's straight in otherwise. What do you think in the mix vs guitars only?
They sound more a like than I thought they did.
Great idea for an amp comparo. I never understood why people would say they didn’t like the 6505 feel and sound, until I had one in the room with my Mark. They 6505 doesn’t sound bad at all, but the immediacy just is not there. The Mark gives a reassuring kick to each palm mute. I always thought it was interesting too that Metallica’s rider in the 90s and early 2000s required a pair of 6505/5150 amps to be provided as local backline at each venue as a safety net in case their gear somehow couldn’t be made to function in time for the show.
For whatever reason I really like the 6505+ more than the regular one. I think those "cocked wah" mids really work in the mix. That said, both of these amps are really awesome in the band.
The Mesa mark IV B is such a bad ass amp. With enough time tweaking that thing, you can get it to sound like any other amp. Such an amazing amp.
In the mix it was almost impossible to tell the difference. Isoloated, I can hear the 6505+ has a slightly different thing happening in the low end and low mids. Seems like it has more bottom but less low mids. These tones are lost in a mix as they start competing with the Bass. The Boogie is more defined in the lows and perhaps 'tighter'. The reality is that both amps sound fantastic and do a very similar thing. Both are excellent. Good demo.
Theres something about the mids on the 5150 II and 6505+ that just sound and feel right to me in a mix. Dont really care for the regular versions nearly as much.
I agree.
great vid brother!!! the mark IV definitely for me...i have a 2008 IV w the the tan grill but the short version so i mite b biased!!! i play it in a stereo rig w either a badlander 50W or a engl fireball 100...empress paraEQ in the front, love it...cheers all!!!
I think they both sound good, the mesa is a little more scooped in the mids on its five band EQ. I have the 6505+ but i wish i had a mesa cab paired with it. That would be interesting to hear. Cab and speakers are a big part of the tone combined with the amp. Guitars dont matter nearly as much in my opinion. Of course humbuckers sound different than single coils and emgs sound a certain way. With my experience even a cheap guitar through a bad ass amp and cab will easily deliver the goods.
Prefer the Mesa - the mids sound tighter and less honky. The overall sound of the Mesa is just a bit more precise and refined if that makes any sense. Totally agree with the "fine wine vs house wine" comment.
The mark series is just something else - but so is the pricetag.
Both amplifiers sounded great through a car stereo and a laptop. I could hear a difference in the mids the most between the two amplifiers. More noticeable with guitars only.
Yep. I'm pretty sure you could get them to sound identical in the mix with a little EQ tweaking in post.
@@TIGHTENmetal Then you'd just be Glenn Fricker where you post tweak to make everything sound the same. LOL
They sound the exact same in a mix. i clicked off the tab to try and figure out when the change was, when it came to the isolated tracks, i could tell a slight difference.
Better speakers and more ear-training;) The difference is quite noticable in the low-mids, even in the mix. Not trying to be a jerk - just trying to help point it out. Peace.
6505+ for me. More clarity.
