Something very fundamental people need to understand about this amp is the fact that the standard bass, mid, treble, presence pots are placed before the pre-amp section, unlike most amps that are placed after the pre-amp. This is why the mark series have an almost tubescreamer front end pick attack to the sound, the treble and presence are pushing the front end of the pre-amp which tightens the sound up and gives it its crunch. The 5 band eq is placed after the pre-amp and this gives it back the low end,mid cuts etc. I use an eq pedal in front of my dual rectifier to achieve an almost similar tone and sound way more transparent than actually using a tube screamer or other boost pedal.
People don’t understand the insane amount of ways you can change the dynamics of an amp with a simple EQ pedal in front. I think it’s the lack of understanding HOW adding or subtracting frequency ranges before the preamp affects tone as opposed to after.
Back in those days we considered such a tone 'insanely high gain'. Now the cool kids call it a 'crunch' 😄. Awesome sound Jon, and great playing. Oh, and I'll try these settings on my old Mesa boogie studio preamp. Cheers!
Dude.... I've had a Mark V for about 2 weeks and this video BROUGHT THE AMP TO LIFE. I thought I was crazy because I couldn't dial it in but you provided some GREAT advice! I slightly tweaked to my liking of course and I'm also using the Cab Clone in the back going direct. Thank you and cheers from Texas!
I’ve had this amp for about 4 years. Replicating these settings are the best it’s sounded for sure. Awesome! I do find it is pretty noisy amp when not playing.
I have a mesa mark v 35 with a 4x12 mesa v30 ... I managed to find settings that gave me good sounds ... on the other hand with your video settings on the 2 c + c is incredible the tone 👌 thank you for your videos
Killer tone. Would be cool to see a video on how you get this same kind of tone with the Helix, etc. and match this video (as well as some of your other great amp tone videos). Great video! 👍🏻
Maybe wait for the Helix 2 to arrive? Actually, you could probably make a decent income, from selling Helix or AxeFx presets, if you were able to match all of your amp close, (well close enough), I guess... 😄 I've seen people try this before, but only with a few amps. You have the advantage of owning, quite a large collection of guitar amps and a reputation now, for being able to dialing them in to suite a lot of people's taste... I don't know, just a thought. ☺️
@@lydfar2392 Also, I agree. He needs to start creating some artist matching sounds and amp matching sounds and selling them. Especially with the IR to go along with the sound you hear. I know I would be purchasing them (and requesting them)! 👍🏻
Grappig, ik wist niet zeker wat ik had ingesteld op mijn mesa maar ik zat al heel dicht bij jou in de buurt! Je hebt een tof kanaal, keep up the good work! 😎
I can actually get very close to this sound spot on with the Joyo Zombie II amp surprisingly. Pretty much the same settings with an EQ thrown in the loop too. Cheap alternative for those who can't afford a Real MesaBoogie amp. Cool tune and nice playing too, cheers.
Mesa Boogie, especially Mark II-V series, man they make such great rich tones, soft and yet crunchy. My wet dream would be to get the Mark V and would pretty much be done with lol
I got one shipping today and I am interested to see what tones i can get out of it. Used to own a mark iv too. The V has a much better clean and crunch tone.
Awesome playing.. however , I think you could play so well and sound the same through any amp. I have a Mesa mark v amp.. they are great fun.. but it’s all in the fingers tbh !!
thanks for the setup. Also having the mk v 35, I kinda hesitated to dial the knob in extreme positions just cuz it 'seems' too over the top - not the actual tone, but the dial positions themselves. One would think the the dials would be factory calibrated so the user would usually tweek it between 9 to 3 o clock. But, no, not mesa. Hence you've helped me to break out of the shell and I thank you for it, man.
Most guitar players overlook how important a good bass guitar tone is to compliment the guitar. Your bass tone is great. I'm a live sound engineer, and I've had more bass guitars ruin a mix than anything else
Got the exact same amp and yes, it's definitely a little work to dial in. One mode that seems to get overlooked is the "Crunch" setting on the clean channel. With the clean channel gain up on the crunch setting, you get a glorious modern classic rock (not metal) tone that is just so much fun to play. Totally agree also with the graphic being an essential component to getting a great tone - I also had a Boogie Caliber 22 combo that was almost un-usable without the graphic engaged. At least the Mk V line aren't quite that bad. Another very powerful control on this amp is the treble control on the Clean/Crunch channel - up to about 1 o'clock, it acts just like a standard treble control but past that, it engages a mid boost (not honky) that also increases gain - great for rock tones that cut through.
@@CBGypsy03 Thank you, your videos and your playing are amazing. My bucket list guitar is the Gibson Custom shop Black Beauty, I really enjoyed your video on that guitar.
@@seanwakeling2405 OH no that's not me playing. I'm just a random answering your question haha. But I agree the black beauty is special. Hope you get one cheers
I have that amp. It is awesome. I use very different settings, but that's okay, it's a great high gain amp. That said, it'll always sound harsh like that with V30 speakers/IRs. The combo has a C90. I have an 80s Mesa 4x12 and mic the upper C90s (the combo cab has a ring to it that the old 4x12 doesn't).
Hey man, great tone! Does this amp work as the old Mark IIC+? With tones before the gain stage and the graphic eq before the power section? As an italian follower, I’m proud to hear you’re using a Red Seven product… have you ever tried their amps? Leviathan model could be the best for your playing stile!
I think 5:20 may be the most important part of this entire video. I have a bias against amps that only do one thing well because it requires diming or zeroing controls. I realize that's just me; lots of people dime stuff. But it does influence my opinion of gear in general.

Most underrated youtube channel of all time. I'm in LOVE with this tone.
Thanks! :)
I agree.. Sonic Drive Studio and Let's All Play Guitar channels are the best on the Tube.
Back in those days we considered such a tone 'insanely high gain'. Now the cool kids call it a 'crunch' 😄.
Awesome sound Jon, and great playing. Oh, and I'll try these settings on my old Mesa boogie studio preamp. Cheers!
Lol. I usually call classic rock tones crunch but for these IIC+ tones I make an exception
true!!

Great video. Is the Mark V 35 loud enough to use in a band rehearsal? Can this amp do 80's music like Def Leppard and Maiden? Thanks
Getting serious 'High Speed Dirt - Megadeth' vibes!

I’ve always been a huge boogie fan!! Great tones and killer riff to execute!!

Mark V 35 is such a great amp. dont know if it is that huge transformer or what, but that ESP steals the show
always great to ear the guitars isolated ! great job
nice tones... still would like to see a video how to achieve the metallica tones from the mini rectifier.
Did you try to use an AT2020 mic with a SM57 or an AT2020 mic with an E906 (mid set) you will tell me, thank
How does the amp sound when using headphones? Its my bucket list amp.
Honestly I like the cab clone, some people complain. But with that option for silent playing is excellent. Really nice amp +

Seconded. We could make this happen as I own one of these. Jon, if you are interested you can use it for a video.
Incredible how the EQ works. I got a friends that got a rect o Verb and founded as well that sweet spot ain’t easy to find easily
thats a really nice even sound and the riffs where cool too.
Great tune. Reminds me of a Norwegian power metal band called Pagans Mind. The guitar player always had such great tone and taste.
Amazing tones with that head!!!!

Very Petrucci like, and John Petrucci in my own opinion has the best crunch tone out there. Especially on the last two albums by DT.
His tone is amazing. And his latest solo album is brilliant

Great sound… great amp!
That guitar is sick looking!
What is the difference between the mkV the mkV25/35
The powersection (EL84 vs 6L6) and the smaller ones also have less switches/channels
Badass
Would the settings be the same on the mkv 90 watt?
I think so, yeah

NEVER! :)
funny you use a metallica tone to play a riff that sounds like megadeth. sounds great.
I heard whiffs of Doctor Feelgood era Crue .
A quite Megadeathy riff imo
Sorry man but it's not even close. To me the V breaks from the lineage of all the previous marks. It sounds sterile in comparison.
Can you give an example of a clip that sounds much better? Just curious! I've never tried a real IIC+ myself
