    Hey guys! Time to compare my three end game cabs. Thoughts in the vid. One thing I will add that I didn't get to in the boring portion is that even though the 2x12 is sized to be roughly half of the OS, it's actually much more like the Traditional in terms of tightness. That was unexpected.
    What cab's tone do you prefer?

    I have always wondered how a Mesa 2x12 would sound with the 8ohm Mesa V30’s instead of the 16ohm counterparts that come stock. Might be a good video. I have an OS Straight which I love and sold my last 2x12 because of that fizz. I would probably sell my OS if the 2x12’s were a little smoother in the high end because they are just so damn heavy and I already know I wouldn’t take it out of my jam space for that reason. Great video 👍

      I suspect it would e a bit smoother, however IMO the 16 ohm speakers for some reason do cut the live mix better.

    4x12 Straight Traditional > 2X12 Horizontal = 4X12 Straight Standard IMO, I like 4x12 Straight traditional well balanced, especially good low-end.

    I can't compare with that loose riff. You should play more chugs I believe.

    Damn it! I want a mesa cab so bad! Ive got a marshall 1960 Lead that I threw two eminence CV-75s 16ohm, it has the UK made celestion g12T75 16ohm speakers in it. I thought id hate it, i got it off of a buddy that needed a few hundred bucks real quick, an it sounds...not bad since I threw the eminence speakers in there. I like eminence more than the v30s and blended with the g12t75s it sounds pretty "meaty". But I love mesa cabs! They really are the best.

      ...You may notice that the most common 4x12 ever on rock stages is the Marshall 1960.

    Sadly there was no low E chugs so we can hear the bottom end of the cabs … would be great if you could redo this with some different low end riffs

  • @motorboy1966

    Good comparison. You can really hear a difference. Trad sounds best to me. 2x12 is fizzy and boxy, OS has some fizz. Maybe in room sounds different? But I will say, I own a well broken in Mesa OS slant purchased from a guitarist that played out with it alot, and it doesn’t sound at all like many of the youtube vids with the fizzy top end or wooly bass. Its super warm and nicely balanced. Guess they have to be really broken in to get the best out of them.

    • @TIGHTENmetal
      @TIGHTENmetal  3 роки тому

      Both the 2x12 horizontal & vertical have this same fizzy tone- but it does cut the mix really well.
      In the room the OS is the most balanced, but it also has the hardest time in the mix.

      @@TIGHTENmetal I just play at home so I prefer the smoother tones. Like the channel.

      @@motorboy1966 Thanks. For smooth & bedroom, the standard cube shaped Recto 1x12 is very well balanced. Otherwise one of these straight 4x12s is the best. Or, honestly, for smooth home play I like the Marshall 1960B better.

    Great video! Does the traditional cab have a semi open back? Also do you know what year these cabs were made? Thank you for the comparison.

      It's a Recto Traditional cab, not a Road King cab. Sorry I don't know the year but they're not really old.

    So question, It appears you were into the Marks and then Rectos. Now I see you did this with a mark iib. Can I ask you preference and why? I now own a iic + non geq because of the tone you got from one of your videos. I also had Mike ++ mod my green stripe (and absolutely love it!) after seeing you mod yours, but I just can’t get into the rectos. Just wondering you view and why. Thanks

    • @TIGHTENmetal
      @TIGHTENmetal  3 роки тому +2

      Ken I've always been into both- they are different tools for different jobs. Generally speaking here's my take. I love Marks for home play and recording, especially tracking leads, but in the live band mix they usually don't sit right for me. In the band, Rectos in all their fizzyness just crush. Likewise when recording I do struggle a bit with getting the Recto tone in the room to come across tracked. Also, with old tube amps they just change day to day, or, maybe it's our ears. At any rate it's good to have them all on hand to see what makes the most sense in the moment.
      The IIC+ IMO has the best lead tone of all time. But, the Mark Coliseums have one of the best power sections of all time. And clarity is king. The best clarity I've had in an amp was the IIC+ SR, but the 60W power section wasn't ballsy enough for what I like. The second best in the clarity department is the IIB Coli, and it is a destroyer of worlds, so it stays & the Cs got sold. Although to be honest I do regret selling the SR a bit.

    I really want a 2x12 for my home just scared i may want a 4x12 straight later on. For hime practice should i go for a 2x12 vertical?

    • @TIGHTENmetal
      @TIGHTENmetal  5 місяців тому +1

      All of the Mesa 2x12s are thinner & more top endy than their 4x12 counterparts. They do cut well for lower tunings, but they don't have the punch & full range of their 4x12 friends. If you have the space, I'd always go 4x12.

  • @progrocker84

    I have the OS 4X12 slant on top of the recto 2x12. It sounds great with my Mark V - much better than either cab on its own. That said, I've got a Diezel Herbert coming soon, and I'm a little apprehensive of whether it will get along with those cabs.

    • @TIGHTENmetal
      @TIGHTENmetal  2 роки тому +1

      I can see that because the 2x12 adds some top end cut and a different dynamic.
      Guess you'll find out soon about the Herbert!

    • @progrocker84
      @progrocker84 2 роки тому +2

      @@TIGHTENmetal So the Herbert is here. I find that the Herb through a Diezel 2x12 and the Mark V through a Mesa 2x12 is a great mix. I prefer this blend over use of the 4x12 (alone or in combination).

    But how does the 212 sound in a room compared to all other cabs when none of them are miked?

    • @TIGHTENmetal
      @TIGHTENmetal  Рік тому +1

      The Recto 212s have more top end, less bottom end, and less push than the 412s. For this reason I will say the one place I think the 212s may cut the mix better is with really low tuned guitars.
