I'm by no means a professional painter - just a hobbyist. In the beginning I believed you had to have the best gun to automatically get good results but couldn't afford one. So I dealt with poor results spending the time to rework wherever necessary. I finally got a very nice clear gun and yes it makes it much easier to find the "sweet spot" but also found that my cheaper guns could actually be adjusted to work much better and almost as well. In the beginning I followed "recommended settings" religiously but learned you just have to experiment with adjustments until you get the results you want. All of my guns have stainless steel needles and tips and held up very well for my level of work. (Several Harbor Freight guns, a Devilbiss GTI and Iwata). One real benefit of my clear coat gun is it's light weight - especially when painting roof panels. As usual great tips here!
After buying a few budget guns myself and a few years learning how to set up the gun, i find myself using a very cheap gun most of the time. In short, u need to know your gun in and out until you get the setting right for the gun. You dont need super expensive gun to perfect your paint job. Expensive gun will surely helps as they are built to perfection but if you know understand how to set a gun properly, then any gun will do with exception of very poorly underpar design and quality. Your channel have helps me a lot, been subscribing to your channel quite a long time. Thanks.
Brian, I am always amazed at how you can compress years of experience into a short lesson with so many nuggets of knowledge expressed so simply. I finally got a chance to spray some clear with the iwata kiwami 4 that I bought a while back after your review and it is amazing for the price. I see why you favor the iwatas for clear. The angle of the camera on the first clear coat was great and I could really see the overlap passes really well.
Thank you! Thats a teaching technique called “chunking”. Basically it’s a theory of adding small bits of knowledge from a larger scale into digestible bites. That iwata sure has a beautiful fan!
I started out with the Devillbiss FLG4 n kept practicing on my own car. Watching the gunman n other great painters showing you how they painted til I learned n got good with a cheap gun. Then I bought a Iwata LS400 to see if I could get really good results n I couldn’t be more pleased !!Thanks for all the videos n tips, has helped tremendously 😁
Aftèr 8 yrs of painting and trying several guns over that time I feel Devilbiss & ANI are the best with some Iwata being pretty good too. If you can't afford those brands the Porphis is best bang for your buck and I find myself using them more than my Devilbiss DV1 guns. I use my ANI 200 black Skull Edition that comes with 3 caps and digital manometer a lot too
I'm mid a full strip down respray on my first hobbyist job with an R500. It's been a steep but good learning curve with the R500. Laying the clear well isn't easy but I'm gradually getting a technique down. I'd be very interested at this point in time to try an expensive clear gun to see if it might actually be easier to get better results. Brian is right though. Unless you have great conditions to paint in, the clear is an absolute magnet for dust particles/debris so you have to heavily cut it back and polish it back up. I've ended up doing two "flow coat" coats. Partly so I know there's a hefty thickness of clear to cut back for the final result but doing this has also given me more practice spraying clear.
Brian... Man you've really taught me so much since joining your channel. I'm getting more confident to do my own car with each video I watch. You are a great explainer and teacher. Thank you and I look forward to seeing your next video.
Totally happy with my LPH400 in a garage as its very controlled with less overspray. also bought a Iwata Wider4L from Japan before people discovered it for under $150 (Price has doubled recently)........cant tell the difference in the two guns as the Wider4L was designed to replace the LPH400. Devilbiss FLG 905163 for primer...........great gun as the Gunman points out. Cheers.
Thank you. This video answered all my questions that were pending from the last video. I'm glad you turned it into one. Really good information and on point. I'm glad to be a subscriber.
Hey Brian. I am an industrial painter looking to get into more diy stuff at home and I bought the black widow 2.0 after watching your video and some others and was wondering why you don’t use it at all anymore. Love your videos!
Your videos are second to none in encouraging the art of the possible. One issue I didn't notice you touch on here for the DIY sprayer is cfm. For example the 3M gun seems unlikely to be usable on an average DIY compressor? EDIT: I’ve gone back and watched some of your older videos and you cover this issue repeatedly. Kudos
I brought the Aeropro 610 back when you reviewed it and honestly it's been a great budget gun. I bought the kit which came with the 1.3, 1,5, and 1,7 tips, caps etc. Although I found that I rarely use the 1.5, the rest of the kit and the gun has proven to be a solid performer.
Hey hey Brian. The Honda S2000 is one of my favorite cars. I definitely love that color. Thanks for the in-depth look at all of the spray guns. I’ll have to give the static gun a go. You definitely love your spray guns. I really enjoyed your colab at SEMA with Bryan from Eastwood. Great company for sure. Take care brother.
Thank you so much! I really did have a good time doing that podcast with him it really gave folks a chance to learn a little bit more about me! Thank you for watching that
Are you suppose to always sand after your first coat of primer ?? And what # of sanding should you start with and move up to ?? Beginner wanting to learn Ty
Im surprised you didn’t mention the ANi F160! Need to review that gun for sure. Its around $150 and sprays just like any top end gun with the most affordable replacement parts.
How do u feel about the cheaper paint guns that say they can do it all..paint, prime, seal and lay clear just by changing the tips. Like the Aero pro R500 with 1.3, 1.5 and 1.7 tips. Also maybe do a follow up video explaining to us newbies what the differences are between a $90 gun, a $900 gun and a mid price gun, to help us know what features we're looking at. Thanks for taking the time to educate us. 😊
Hey Brian, I appreciate you kindly sir . I really like the harbor freight black widow 1.7 for primer . I haven’t seen you use that spray gun or the 1.3 . Maybe I haven’t came across them . Anyways stay blessed 🤝🏽🙏🏽
Questions, is there a budge gun that can be use for all the materials? What kind of care do they require between waiting times, and also the different materials? For example, if 15 minutes of waiting time is require between paintings, do is required for the paint no to dry? Never done it so I know nothing,,, thank you
Saw just a few pieces of dirt and you are taken care of it there at the final part of the video but I'm just not a fan of the jacket that you wear I don't like the way it opens at the bottom and potentially could hit the vehicle I think I would rather see a jumpsuit
What happened to the Meji Finer Core gun? Isn't it the same gun as the Luma 3 Exodus? It sells for around $300 on Ebay which would make it a good candidate for a midrange gun. Kandyman loves Luma guns.
Would you still recommend an HVLP setup for a beginner or this with a compressor? Im nervous about what filters i need on a compressor and no risk with an HVLP
Why not the dv1 for basecoat, I am devilbiss from the gti pro days, left the game for around 10 years Just gotta do a few jobs now tho, All Aussie stuff Ve ssv ute closed door Hg kingswood full paint And a old bucket hilux, probably a lazy closed door job after a dozen beers So I was thinking the dv1 And whatever data gun for primer I have on the tool box It will be in a shed, however, dust will not be a issue, it will be sealed off and then an extraction fan What are your thoughts pal
You are 100% right. That’s why I bought the most expensive guns. Best quality. No need for buffing if you had good prep and clean environment. If you buy junk it will work , imo they just don’t atomize that well and for clear they cover but not well and usually you need cut and buff. And that is just a pia. Waste of time it’s like painting twice. Hence good product good prep and clean environment give just one shot and it lays perfect. 👍🏻
Forgot to mention sata but the rp guns so expensive and product pigs they just throw it on huge amounts. Dv1 it’s too expensive for devillbiss. Still love my tekna copper and gfg670 old std. my 4500 does just fine. Sagola imo easiest to maintain as no seals or stuff that goes bad. Perfectly machined and easy to clean.
Love the channel and knowledge I gain from you. I plan to DIY paint my 66 C10 in my shop. Will construct some type 10:54 of paint booth to be as clean asp possible. My question to you is what would be your pick from each category if the budget is constrained to the low and mid price guns?? Thanks again for all the detailed content you share.
@Paint Society would you ever consider teaching "peelable automotive paint" AkA Liquid wrap? The AutoFlex stuff sprays out of an HVLP, you can get OEM colors, and is awesome because you can get to the fun stuff, actually spraying the car and not a bunch of sanding unless there is bodywork required or failing clear. I think you would be good at it, get a kick out of it, and could take your channel to the next level plus help a lot of DIY'rs determine if it could be something for them. @dipyourcar is pretty much the gatekeeper it seems like and in FL as well 🤔🤔🤔
its been around for a while and to sum it up liquid wrap is fun and games for temporary results such as personalizing your car. in other words kid stuff. Liquid or film wrap doesnt last the life of the car. Painting is the permanent solution, whether its complete color change, restoration or repair.

Great vid! THX for actually using an inexpensive gun, and explaining the results, and the thought process, real time!
I thought it would be fitting to use
Thank you Brian! Another great production filled with helpful information and recommendations! Have a happy Thanksgiving 🦃

same! I was hoping to see the 610 or the R500 mentioned but surprised it wasn't
It definitely was, but it wasn’t pictured because I had those at home, but I surely did mention both
I use the 1.5 for single stage paints.
@@PaintSociety my bad Brian, maybe i missed it, love the videos man, keep them coming!
@@toycoma98I rarely use single stage, but next time I do definitely I'll try the 1.5.
I am looking at the d1 drizzle for my first gun thanks to your video
I enjoy your videos so much! I am just starting out and you keep me motivated 😊💙
I'm so glad!
For the smaller compressor guys check out the ANI Compact and R150.Excellent spray guns and easy on air.
If your in a water base booth 3m with a 1.2 is all I use for sealer and base and my iwata for clear getting profesional results!
Real and useful talk indeed 🎉
You the best Bryan ❤

I have it. Will review it
Can you do the ani r160 too please.
Love the videos. Very informative.
Ty!
Brian please do a spray out of different brands of clear coat from cheap clear to expensive clear coat
Amateur painter here. I have two Devillbiss Flg5 guns 1.8 1.3 and a 1.4 needle and tip.
And a iwata Bellaria 1.3.
Any chance you you could show how to repair a burn through in single stage?

What do you think of the Eastwood concours lt100 with multiple tips for an all around gun
Thank you for this video Brian ! How would you compare the luma exodus gun compared to your mid and high end guys?
Hey Brian, I appreciate you kindly sir . I really like the harbor freight black widow 1.7 for primer . I haven’t seen you use that spray gun or the 1.3 . Maybe I haven’t came across them . Anyways stay blessed 🤝🏽🙏🏽
Do you have links to these guns and accessories for them? Thank you

Hi, Brian What kind of neutralizer gun do you use?Where can I get one
I’ve only used the 3m gun 1.3, sata 5500 1.4 I, and Sata 4400 mini 1.0 but I have a couple guns I need to try. Where would you place the lph-400?
you should do a review on the 3m fine finish heads
I’ve been waiting for the fine finish to come up
When the paint specks say “at the air cap” is that the same as at the inlet to the gun?
No completely ignore that part
Is primer & sealer the same?
What happened to the Meji Finer Core gun? Isn't it the same gun as the Luma 3 Exodus? It sells for around $300 on Ebay which would make it a good candidate for a midrange gun. Kandyman loves Luma guns.
Would you still recommend an HVLP setup for a beginner or this with a compressor? Im nervous about what filters i need on a compressor and no risk with an HVLP
As a diyer, I would like to know what kind of cheapest air compressor can do the job with d1 drizzle that kind of gun.
Depends how much youre painting at once .
Ls400 sucks for metallics I prefer the Sata x5500
What camera do you use?
do you ever use touch up or mini hvlps? I deal with small parts and I like the iwata lph80, and passche. Just wondering if you had a review out?
I hope you test ANI f160 spray gun
What type of gun you use for base?
Purchased a flg5 kit last year after all gòod reviews but now i could have saved myself some money on whats available in inexpensive guns. Oh well
I used the Amazon gun and wow
Dude what about buying paint? I’m wondering where to get primer, base and clear?
I get all diy products from eastwood
What is name of the gun for primer?
Would you suggest a LVLP gun over HVLP for DIY home projects with a "smaller" sized compressor?
Yes
Yes, and also mini touch up spray guns. HVLP but consumes less air.
Can you give me the name for the gun for first primer please?
Hi Brian,
That spary gun that I've got, that you reviewed has done a good job, but they mixed the colour wrong 🤣🤦♂️ to show you
What setting would you suggest I use on my WS-400 Series 2 1.3 clear gun? I’m spraying Tamco 4100 Glamour Clear and can’t get it to lay flat
26 psi. Move slow. Fan 1 turn in from wide open and fluid wide open
@ thank you I appreciate you taking some of your time to reply. Love the videos
@ ty for watching 😀
Why not the dv1 for basecoat, I am devilbiss from the gti pro days, left the game for around 10 years
Just gotta do a few jobs now tho,
All Aussie stuff
Ve ssv ute closed door
Hg kingswood full paint
And a old bucket hilux, probably a lazy closed door job after a dozen beers
So I was thinking the dv1
And whatever data gun for primer I have on the tool box
It will be in a shed, however, dust will not be a issue, it will be sealed off and then an extraction fan
What are your thoughts pal
Dv1 is my top gun but i wanted to show the folks that the astro can still get it done
Ok dv1 it ia, but I will get a c2 cap not the c1
You are 100% right. That’s why I bought the most expensive guns. Best quality. No need for buffing if you had good prep and clean environment. Good guns just not a fan of them
