I have been preparing, both mentally and physically, to paint my project car for at least 2 years. This is exactly what I need to guide and push me towards finally doing it! Really appreciate all your videos, especially as an amateur, this information is absolute gold.
@@PaintSociety I'm on the fence about trying to repaint a two door hatchback myself, vs. getting prep work done seperately before taking to a reputable Maaco or another "less expensive" option, though still wanting the high quality two stage options, and starting with primer and good surfaces, etc. HOW MUCH DO YOU THINK IT WOULD COST ME, ROUGHLY, TO BUY THE EQUIPMENT YOU USED IN THIS VIDEO (THREE SPRAY GUNS, PRIMER, BASE COAT, CLEAR COAT, AS WELL AS VARIOUS SANDING TOOLS). SO LET'S SAY, THE PAINT ASPECT ONCE THE TRIM AND GLASS HAS BEEN REMOVED BODY DENTS AND RUST HAS BEEN REPAIRED AND IT'S READY FOR PRIMER. It may be most economical and practical for me to try to bring a prepped car to a maaco for example. I feel like the results would probably be similar in quality, but at last Maaco people have experience and would be shooting in a professional booth, etc. On the other hand, it would be worthwhile for me to acquire tools if I thought this would be the first of many restorations/ sprays on my own. I have sanded and polished cars before, and sanded orange peel from other cheap paint jobs, but never stripped / surface prepped/ or painted a car (although I do think I'd be good at that if I tried).
@gangrene58 I have a great project car he can work on. My 1972 Pinto... I'm trying to decide: Wimbledon White or redo a version of the stock brown color.
Most DIY's have no grasp of the tremendous amount of labor involved in a project of this scale and quality not to mention the material cost involved, this is exactly how it should be done but probably beyond the grasp of the average guy working in his garage, from someone who was a professional painter for over 20 years this is how you do it right.
Very valid points, I created this guide for the do it yourself to give an honest shot of learning everything they need to know about painting and doing it if that’s exactly what they wanted to do, also I gave the disclaimer in the beginning of the video that it might not be worth the cost.
Most DIY'ers are going for "good enough" and don't have the money or time to spend on a show car finish. However, there's great advice in this video that doesn't cost much to follow.
Why so negative? Your comment applies only to people who are not curious and not willing to learn. I overhauled my F350 diesel truck (down to the shortblock - rings were fine) by watching UA-cam videos. It runs like a champ now and I saved myself a ton of money. For painting, a spray booth would be nice, but I will simply buy a cheap portable unit. Or make one. Very light body work required, but I am willing to sand and remove body parts. This isn't rockert science. Just requires lots of elbow grease and time. If you mess up the paint, remove or sand, and start over 😜
I feel like Brian is just one our hometown heroes. Like the town celebrity. Bless you Brian for showing us all these videos and tips and tricks. I was able to paint my cousins car completely with a damn party tent but using mostly your techniques along with paint garage and pharraway. My 90 300ZX is next. Gonna be tropical glitz seductive red. It’s gonna be epics thanks Brian. You are the man. They say do something you love and do something that helps people. You are doing just that. Appreciate you brother!
Hey Brian another great video as always! Just want to say that I personally would have chosen Matrix MS-52 clear on this job because it is absolutely crystal clear like glass! And zero yellowish tint! Easy to color sand soon after it has fully dried and all you need is 2 full coats and your done. I'm not sure if you have tried that specific clear yet at your shop or what you guys mostly use there so I thought I'd mention it in case. Also, as you know most people have no idea what it takes to paint a car unfortunately! Tons of time and effort goes into it and how expensive materials are alone, especially doing a full restoration! And when you give them a price for total, they think you are robbing them! Lol. And also, I agree with you when it comes to sealer, although it's not always necessary to use, depending on the situation, but you are really stretching out your paint job for sure when you use it!👍💯 And like you say, learning never stops, like time and experience continues accumulating and we always learn something from each other! Question for you! Have you ever tried or occasionally do slightly thin out your body filler like max 5%? If not, you'd be surprised how nice and thin it spreads long way on the panel!👍Saving you time and material when sanding it! Let me know, Take care.❤
Good job bro, I'm also a production painter and just started watching your videos. It's good to see someone who takes the time to help others. There's a good many tips and tricks to our game and it makes me feel good seeing people willing to help others have a better understanding of the process.
Im going to autobody school for the next 2 years. I've been watching your videos for years, so far ive painted a jeep and primed my rx7. The jeep didnt come out but it was a learning experience. The only reason i can do any of this is because of your videos.
I’ll be doing my second paint job this week. So excited! It’s a crew cab squarebody with a two tone scheme. I bought an inflatable booth with exhaust for this one. First one was my v8 s10 in my garage. I wouldn’t have attempted it if not for this channel! Thanks teach!

Hi Brian. Hope everything is good. I really enjoyed this series and your dedication. Tons of work for you and your team. God it got to be smokin hot in Florida. You guys were soaked. Thanks for all the tips and tricks. Your ride turned out amazing. The finish looks like a mirror. I’m 6’3” but wish I had 3” more inches. 😂 Enjoy your weekend with your beautiful family brother.

Thank u for your step by step videos I have always learn something different every time you awesome I’m excited in doing my first full paint job on my two door Tahoe … and thank u
This is awesome. Painting is one of those things where I think I can do it, but I don't know if I'm quite ready for a big job yet. Gotta get my toes wet first.
So nice to see such work and the final result is awesome... top notch work... keep going Brian with such information. But by the way I have two questions... What is, more or less, the final thickness of this paint job as it started from bare metal? Way too much above the factory values?! Do you make a water wash of the surfaces each time after using the scuff pads/sanding or you really only use a moisted towel to pick the dust and then use the needed rag tag? Because otherwise you will wet the protection plastics and so on! Keep going! 😀

So today I bought some useable paint liners and hopefully next week I’m going to get the 3m paint gun from Amazon because I seen the episode where you use it. I don’t have a way to clean a gun I need to find an air compressor. I know I’m going backwards but I’m getting the easy stuff first so hopefully 🤞🏾 I can paint my car by October 😊
An old timer at a local paint supplier said the shape on a block sandpaper is different from da sanding disc same grit. Block paper has a pointy material and a da disc has more rounded material.
The Ultra paint stripper seems to work good enough if you follow the directions. Will save me a lot of sanding mess. I couldn't never afford to pay shop rates to do the amount of prep I want on my project car and truthfully I'd rather do it myself. Now if only I could get shop prices on good paint. ouch.
I'm looking at painting my car and in need of advise on air compressor I'm looking at the chicago air hush 150 or chicago air hush 70 it will be used for sanding with 6" sander and painting you have help me so much on how to go about what I'm about to do I just can't stop watching you now so meany tips and reviews
What a great video ... been waiting for this one!! I cant imagine what a paint job of this quality would cost in a shop. Amazing! I'm the original owner on my car and I know there's no body work and it has only the original paint. Can I just use the paint remover on the whole car? (Do I need to use that air file if it's all original?) Is that epoxy the same stuff you used in the rattle-can video a few months back?
I found it interesting that you wet sand the primer and dry sand clear. I've always been the opposite. I like to dry sand primer with mesh abrasives because they are much less prone to clogging, and as you mentioned, it’s easier to see what effect you're having on the surface. I always wet sand before polish as I feel the water creates a nice slip, keeps dust down, helps prevent pig tails, and seems cleaner. But that right there is exactly why I love watching this stuff. It never hurts to keep an open mind and see how other people do it. Great videos!
Hi Brian. Many, many thanks for all the videos and the excellent information. Have you ever sprayed the old style cellulose paint, and if you have ,do you have any tips please. Best regards from the UK.
love the videos was wondering im trying to paint my truck a 1999 dodge ram extended cab how much paint and reducer should i get i want to do it outside or what do you recommend to get?
As 20 year painter I loved this video, looks beautiful I do have to ask tho ,did you end up spraying the rims? I think it would pol off even more great work man,I'd love to collaborating with you one day ,I feel like people really need to be shown all the hard work and stages it takes to get a paint job done , I feel like of people had a better understanding of how hard and time consuming it is to paint and an understanding of the industry because me and you both know it's not always chocolates and roses in these companies there are good ones and then ones that only care for money and have no respect for 5s and being clean of your environment and booth we deal with chemicals all day and we don't even get hazard pay ,one actual fact is that in the whole population of the world only 2% does what we do professionally, you have to really love what you do and do it with passion to honestly say your a true painter not everyone realizes that,I respect you love for the DIY but I personally feel like painting a car or anything that has to do with a hvlp gun and solvents should be done professionals were not certifiedfor nothing , I'm not gonna go buy a plane and then fly it myself to try save money or because I'm bored lol no I'm gonna hire a pilot or whatever pro thats needed there are people that do that for a living I feel like some jobs have there professionals for a reason it truly pays to be educated In what you do especially when you make a living off it ,it's ypur name your life your work that's the beauty of painting anyways great job brother keep up the good work
Not everyone can afford to pay the thousands of dollars it takes to have a car painted. Therefore we learn to do ourselves, I’m a licensed aircraft technician and I’ve gotten pretty good at a lot of different things like painting. You don’t have to be a pro to get decent results.
I am impressed with the video and results for sure. I just don't understand the very low pressure but sooo much overspray/waste of materials. How is your spray pattern so wide at such a low pressure? P.S. just your voice with the delete noise is much better. Cheers
Hi Brian, I have a couple of quick questions. My Mustang was painted about two year ago and has been sitting in my garage since as I have been working on it. I want to repaint the car since it has gotten a few dings and some nicks. I am also going to seal it before I paint it. What grit sand paper should I use to scuff the clear? After I scuff the paint, I will expose the dings, etc... should I sand them down to the primer or metal before adding body filler? I am normally getting many automotive questions but this is my first time asking a question because I never really got into the painting process. Lol. Thank you SO much in advance.
It be best to watch as many videos as possible so you can actually see it in person, but generally, you’re gonna sand your clearcoat with 600 and then scuff your dings with let’s say 180, this will create enough of a scratch for light filler on small dings.
Thank you SO much for replying to my question. I know you receive hundreds of questions daily and it can be quite exhausting responding to questions you have already answered in previous videos. I am very meticulous on how I do things that's the main reason I asked. You have MANY videos showing exactly what I need to do. Once again, thank you for your time, replying to my question and the incredible DETAILED videos you have posted throughout the years. Sincerely, Terence
Thanks for all the info Brian! Big help! What air regulator do you use/recommend? I will soon be spraying a Metallic and understand air settings need to be consistent throughout job.

Brian. As a diy’er, I may need to set the project aside for long periods of time. What steps can I stop between? What steps must be done promptly? What steps will I have to prep (sand, scuff) before resuming? Thanks for all your videos.
Try to get to the primer stage and then you can let it sit once it gets into the primer stage, never really want to leave bare metal exposed, or body filler exposed
Hey Bryan how can I get a “don’t over think it, it’s just paint” sticker? lol or any stickers of yours. You have taught me to paint my first with all of you videos. I am painting a truck I’m building and I am going to sticker out my tailgate like cleetus mcfarland did Rudy’s trunk. And I would love to put a sticker of yours on my tailgate!
Hey brother, just a heads up I think you forgot to dimple the top lip of the axle nut over the notch on the axle shaft after you torqued the axle nut down 😬 thanx for doing this video 😉
I appreciate all of your great videos. What mask should I use to spray a car in my garage that will keep me safe from isocyanates? Is the 3M 6001 organic vapor cartridge good enough? Also, I heard that isocyanates could get into your bloodstream through your eyes. I noticed you often use a half face mask. Have you run into any problems? Thanks again for your great work!
We have a good booth but if painting in your garage try and use a full face mask. 3M makes them with those vapor cartridges that work good for guys at home.

Hi, I love your work! Could I ask if you don't mind please. When you have a brand new panel (before attaching it) you prime, base and clear coat. How do you blend it to other panels next to it? And when doing smart repair on small damage area. Do you sand damage area, then fill and sand. Then 1000 grit entire panel. Then prime damaged area, then base coat damage area but flick it so abit goes on other panel. Then clear coat it all?
Great Video. I am getting ready to try painting a new fender. It is made from SMC. I assume that I need an SMC compatible primer (looking at Evercoat Feather Fill G2) but after that, can I use any sealer? Or does the sealer also need to be SMC compatible? And since it is a brand new fender, can I skip the primer and move right to the sealer? Thanks
Hey Brian thanks for the videos I tackled my 2011 Silverado repaint job. Single stage black 3 coats with aero pro a610 some spots turned out very glossy others had some serious orange peel wonder what the reason?
On the 2k primer do you need to scuff it in between each coat? I want to paint cars but I currently paint boats and use a sealer you don’t have to sand at all. If you have dirt I’ve noticed it’s better to sand it out after base.
Great video, Brian! I'm undertaking a frame-off restoration of my '83 Land Rover Series 3. It's an all-aluminum body (a.k.a., Birmabright). Would you recommend the same process for aluminum with an epoxy primer as the starting point? Thanks! ~Pete
Good morning your channel is excellent. I have a question. I have a 2016 F150 all factory original paint. My question is I have to repaint the tailgate but I’m going to use a non-water based paint Tamco base and clear is product is what I will be using regular base clearcoat. Can I apply that over the factory paint or will I run into problems such as cracking, peeling and bad adhesive thank you..
@@PaintSociety Ok the reason I am asking you for your expert opinion is because it’s the new aluminum body and I think it is waterbased paint from the factory and I will be using Eastwood products such as their urethane high bill primer and I wanted to use regular basecoat clearcoat, but just wasn’t sure if it was compatible with the factory water-based paint but OK I will take my precautions and I will carry on. I just need a little reassurancethat it’s OK for me to move forward. Thanks again for reaching out.

What a great video ... been waiting for this one!! I cant imagine what a paint job of this quality would cost in a shop. Amazing!
I'm the original owner on my car and I know there's no body work and it has only the original paint. Can I just use the paint remover on the whole car? (Do I need to use that air file if it's all original?)
Is that epoxy the same stuff you used in the rattle-can video a few months back?
Hi. Send me pics of your car on IG painf.society
could you do a video on body panel replacement documentation for motor vehicle and procedure Thanks great show
NightHawkBlackPearl B92P paint was a excellent Color for early model Acura/Honda models.
They need to bring it back
@@PaintSociety They should or something similar. My 04 Accord has this color.

Rodney. Its always best to completely cover up. Even i should be wearing a full mask respirator and i suggest you should if you dont have a booth.
@@PaintSociety When do I want to put the filler on? Can I do it over the DTM Epoxy, or should it have a regular primer first?
How do you clean the surface after each sanding sessions??
Hey Bryan how can I get a “don’t over think it, it’s just paint” sticker? lol or any stickers of yours. You have taught me to paint my first with all of you videos. I am painting a truck I’m building and I am going to sticker out my tailgate like cleetus mcfarland did Rudy’s trunk. And I would love to put a sticker of yours on my tailgate!
Hey brother, just a heads up I think you forgot to dimple the top lip of the axle nut over the notch on the axle shaft after you torqued the axle nut down 😬 thanx for doing this video 😉
?
can you review your air compressor and the filtration?!
Hi. Yes i have videos on it
Super chingo 🎉🎉 cuál es el clear coat que usaste?
2pack sikkens hs
I appreciate all of your great videos. What mask should I use to spray a car in my garage that will keep me safe from isocyanates? Is the 3M 6001 organic vapor cartridge good enough? Also, I heard that isocyanates could get into your bloodstream through your eyes. I noticed you often use a half face mask. Have you run into any problems? Thanks again for your great work!
We have a good booth but if painting in your garage try and use a full face mask. 3M makes them with those vapor cartridges that work good for guys at home.
I wish you would add text, to help us take notes and it’s nice to know what you deem noteworthy. Thank you for all your help!
Great review! 👍🏼 what kind of sealer do you recommend for the price? Didn’t catch the name on the video or on the list in description
Sealer is tough to find online to suggest. We use colorbuild but you can reduce that sane epoxy primer by 20 percent as a sealer
THANK YOU SO MUCH
Great video! I plan on doing my car soon. Any advice on tip sizes to use with a HVLP for each step of the way (Fuji 5 stage)
Use .8 fluid tip
Am so new to this. Sorry Can the poxy be used for plastic aswell?

Hi, I love your work!
Could I ask if you don't mind please. When you have a brand new panel (before attaching it) you prime, base and clear coat. How do you blend it to other panels next to it?
And when doing smart repair on small damage area. Do you sand damage area, then fill and sand. Then 1000 grit entire panel. Then prime damaged area, then base coat damage area but flick it so abit goes on other panel. Then clear coat it all?
I prefer never to blend clear. Its much easier to clear the whole panel for a longer lasting repair
I remember seeing a video about trying to use a pancake air compressor, why isn’t that possible and can you add an air tank to make it possible?
Not enough air volume
Can you apply 6 coats of clear coat to protect paint better? the hood on my car is so easy to chip paint
Thanks
Dope with black or dark colors I go all the way to 5000
Hey Brian thanks for the videos I tackled my 2011 Silverado repaint job. Single stage black 3 coats with aero pro a610 some spots turned out very glossy others had some serious orange peel wonder what the reason?
Just have to keep those passes as even as possible and watch the paint go on. Try dropping pressure 2-3 lbs
Why not use the paint remover on sides and fenders too?
If the paint is in good condition, then just sand with 600 grit and you’re ready to paint.
A contact at Eastwood told me I can paint directly over the epoxy primer. Why do you put epoxy and another primer on top?
I wonder too seems like overkill
Hi Brian so you block sanded with water to make your sandpaper last longer ?
It ensures a cleaner cut
Good bro !
