@@PaintSocietyhi I listen to almost all your videos I am not a painter but I made a mistake I went back but not completely of my meecedes c300 and I shot primer over the tape by removing the tape I see all the demarcation ??? because of the tape or the primer and what should I do now. please?
Thank you Brian. In the process of painting my 2nd car, in my garage. You, Bondo Billy, Garage Noise, and SprayWay Customs are my "go to" to learn. One thing, no matter what I learn in my head, there is a HUGE disconnect between knowing it, and the feeling of actually doing it. Lots can go wrong, and I may miss a step in the process. Then Monday Morning Quarterbacking, I think back to what I did wrong, and try to incorporate it the next session. I'm restoring my old (one owner.... ME), 89 Toronado, ordered new in 88. All the mechanicals have been repaired, all the failed electronics now repaired. It's down to paint to finish. 10 months soo far in the process, and one more sealer after the fin body work, then base and clear. Wish me luck!
I am broke in Ohio sooooo mostly I buy repair and paint junk trucks for my family. We paint them all out side at the farm. The morning dew will make the roof and hood flat so park it inside overnight. I really enjoy watching the professionals paint nice vehicles. 😊 Dirty Earl's Cleanup, Trumbull County, Ohio 🇺🇸
One of your best videos, you were laid back, honest, and relaxed. Really came across like I was just tagging along with a friend learning stuff. Great work.
Australia here. I agree. One of the best. What I like is the simple points. We all need reminding , more so as we age. I related to what you said regarding painting as a 'head cleaner' . Say remember the old VCR head cleaning tapes !!
I was watching you from Iraq now I’m in Cleveland Ohio cold weather . I learned a lot from you. Many details and different circumstances and episodes especially from the golden lexus video .Thank you
Thanks for the video. The first time I painted a quarter panel I was 12, did it in the back yard next to the garage. Came out better than I expected, a quick buff and it was very good. I have painted many times outside, in a garage, in a warehouse, a car on a lift, in a booth, you name it. Someone once told me, booths are for painters not cars. I did whatever I had to in order to get the job done. I have a paint area with ventilation and some filtering now, not a true booth. Works ok. I still clean the area, and the parts being painted. I am happy with the results.
Your timing is ridiculous 😂 not even an hour ago I was doing a research on the Internet and looking for paint booths... do I need it, how much I CANNOT afford it, used one, new one, the space I have for such setup, maintenance costs etc. For now I'll stick to cleaning, washing, hoovering my place like a dozen times before painting and in between stages. Totaly manageable to get good results even in a basement :)
I've been painting since the early seventies, I hear a lot about dust dust dirt, but I never hear anything about bugs, flies, gnats, junebugs, crickets, you get the point. Another thing I've seen all these years, people will buy high-dollar paint booth and put it in the the shop where they do all the body work, that's a no no. Another thing is all this base coat clear coat crap, I'll take the 2K urethane enamel any day, as far as blend good old lacquer, as far as spraying hell I'll take the good old Synthol enamel. Those were the good old days.
Long time SPI user. I have sprayed a lot of their Universal Clear. I love the stuff, I use it on so many different jobs. I am not in a production collision repair environment. I will let base, clear, single stage, and epoxy flash for a long time, 30 minutes or more. I use slow reducers and hardeners the majority of the time. Even if the temps are not very high. The reason is to allow the base, clear, and single stage more time flow out, let the mettalics settle more evenly and smoothly, and let the solvents flash out more completely. I find I get clearer gloss, no die back, little to no peel/texture, and overall nicer paint this way. Note, I use solvent base, no water borne. I activate my base, most of the time. I use mostly Glasurit 55 line for color, some Glasurit 22 line, some Mipa, and some Wanda base.
So true! I've been a DIY painter for decades and had to do a lot of figuring out on my own. Even recently, I turned a small 10x10 party tent into a DIY spray booth inside my garage to paint my motorcycle parts (you can see it on my YT channel). Even though I was mostly concerned with controlling overspray, it also keeps the dust out. But I noticed I had one small part that was full of texture and had a few dust nibs. I only noticed this after I took the whole booth down and packed it away. I sanded the clear and resprayed it outside - one full wet coat of clear and it turned out better than when I had painted it in the booth. There was only one small nib in it and I got that out with a razor and buff/polish. Knowing what I know now, I'd be confident that I could prime and paint all the colors outside and reserve the clear for the booth.
I run a bodyshop and don’t have a booth, I use a space heater in winter and turn it off after it taken the chill off the air ,I keep my 3 car sized garage tidy and sweep up often .I use Standox water based paint and dry it with a warm air blow gun that has a filter on the end and yes I do have to de-nib the day after but not much .i do miss the booth for quick drying but don’t miss the hassle a big shop had
I’ve been wanting to open up a fleet collision shop , but I wanted to start without a booth . Is it legal for me to run an llc body shop without a paint booth ?
a skilled painter can do without a booth. but to eliminate the elements, such as bugs, debris and dust a booth is very good to have. but if you cant handle a gun a booth wont help you at all(other than for keeping the dust/debris/bugs away). i still have a hard time to grasp the fact that you paint as a sidegig :D and you are a teacher as a mainjob. impressive.
I have a 44 foot long garage I'm actually converting half of it so I can use as a paint booth. I have built trifold doors with large glass windows, built in some filtration and cut an area in the back wall to blow out the fumes and over spray.....just will be doing small side jobs in it.
been using SPI products for about 10 years now i have repaired hundreds of cars with their universal clear and epoxy primer i love the stuff its not very user friendly at first you need to have some experience as far as clear flash times i just repaired the rear quarters and tailgate on a 2024 dodge ram with 25 to 30 min flash time on clear it winds up pretty slick you have to try to put a little orange peel in sometimes this is painting in the shop no spray booth iwata lph 400 using slow hardner as usual no reducer
I purchased a house about a year ago, three car garage, separated the 2 car port from the 1 single car port put a wall in between both of them and converted it into a “paint booth” been doing a lot of jobs out of here and learning a lot throughout the process, before this I was painting out of my moms garage with the garage door wide open, I feel like I would get better finishes out of there and less dust particles than I do at my own house 🤣
My work thought a new booth would mean no dirt and with a bake cycle have then be done in half the time. I laughed 🤷🏻♂️ definitely better airflow than the homemade booth I sprayed in for over a year. I’m glad I had to use it though. I feel like spraying in a terrible environment only made me better.
Food for thought ... a short video explaining how you are compensated ... you briefly mentioned as a combo tech, body work, taping, painter, etc. ... would be very interesting. A holistic view of the business behind the spray gun.
Thank you, bro. I’m kind of trying to change the dynamic on my videos and make it less formal and do more storytelling, I think it captures the audience a little bit more. Actually honestly, I really like your intros because they’re always a little bit different so I took a little bit from all the UA-camrs I enjoy watching.
The person who taught me to paint , basically explained it like this: your paint room needs to be like an operating theater (for humans) , you wouldn't want to be operated on in a dirty dusty or poorly kept operating theatre , so treat your paint room (not necessarily booth) like said theatre . Flash times for paint are in the tds , personally I use them more as a guide or a starting point and adapt to get the finish I want from there . Your paint booth is a forward draft btw . On the subject , it is quite easy to make a home style paint booth of sorts , to simplify , you only need to make a sealed room with a filtered extraction (and , importantly , induction) there are various ways to heat (it may not be as good as a professional booth , but quite easily can be good enough to make show quality work if that's your thing) . 👍
What I’m getting out of this, is that a paint society lab coat is what it takes to get the perfect paint job 😂🤣. Just kidding Brian, terrific information and thanks for all the info you put into your videos. I really love the fact that you use sikkens paint products. That’s what I learned to paint with and I absolutely love sikkens paint
I’ve sprayed RM Ppg and Sherwin but I’d have to say akzo is my favorite . Sikkens lesonal and Wanda are really good products , I’d go with lesonal if I opened my own shop
I spray on a dirt floor covered with a tarp. I dust and wash the ceiling and walls before painting. I have minimal dirt nibbs. Anything I hang, it's 3ft off the floor.
Good video and nice job as always. Hopefully that pill bag at the start is only for the initial issue and none of the complications it can lead to. Take care.
You can't have an A/C in a booth, but you could have a really handy guy (like me) install a heat pump outside the booth, with an A/C coil in the fresh air inlet pipes of your booth...with a control panel to switch on blow cool air in you piping hot booth! 😂
Thanks Brian, keeping us sharp and well informed. About the anti-static guns: do you have any comments on those anti-static guns that come with their little power unit? They are not that expensive ($149.00 for a nice one) but they seem to be a pain to hook up and use around the car. Thank you!
for lexan windows and reducing static so dust stays off, they told us a rinse with 50-1 fabric softener and water works. Might be something to confirm on a test panel. prob a rinse then a water follow up ? to ensure no residue
AC in a booth would be heaven for a painter. I usually come out looking like I ran a marathon one I take off the suit and mask. If AC were possible, I’d worry about condensation.
I spray in a homemade booth. I use slow everything especially clear coat. I spray at 70 degrees my clear coat is high solids. The flash times is 40-50 minutes after 1st coat 50-1hr after 2nd lol
On your plastic parts you use a flex agent. But I thought most newer paints more or less it was formulated in. At least our te h rep said it wasn't actually needed a while back
Love your videos man. What do you think about using a heat gun to speed up flashing as a DIY guy in a garage on colder days? Is it better to invest in an infrared heater?
I’ve be the first to experience a paint both does not guarantee a professional job. Just got my car hacked by a Bodyshop. Look like it was paint in the middle of a road.
I watch all your vids bro.awesome. whats your setting on the drizzle my nizzo lol.i just bought one. And i have a question.i see alot of almost full coverage on the first coats.are they water base?
Thanks for sharing the tips! I wonder if you have to wax n grease after that sanding with water fix? I tried this recently on sealer and got fish eyes trying to fix the sealer like this with lil water and a rag so I wonder where the contamination came from...
I do final inspection in a bodyshop and I will tell you I see overspray everyday from vehicles getting sprayed in a booth not properly masked!!!!!! Dirt as well!! One painter is way cleaner than the other.
Awesome Video! The DJI mic issue is relatable. We have been using them. After watching some videos we got the gain settings figured out and it helped. We love them after that! Do you use the noise cancelling?
I was using noise canceling, but I don’t like how it weakens up my voice, once we got this mic set up properly, I got a good mix of the backroom sound and my voice, but a big adjustment is the placement on my shirt that really captures my voice much better. I noticed on your channel as well that you use the windscreen so I started using it as well but I’ll tell you every time I use it. I lose it so I’m just gonna go back to using the lav mic that clips right onto the shirt. I’ve been through my fair share of mics and their all a little bit quirky and there’s nothing worse than losing valuable audio right in the middle of the video.
I have the exact same inflatable booth as you do, and it's setup pretty much the same, Elephant trunk with exhaust fan, plus 2 fans blowing air in. I use medium hardener, and my flash times with clear are 5 minutes as the TDS suggests. That's in 25c temps, low humidity. After I setup the booth, I blow it out using my garden blower (exhaust fan on), give it 5 minutes to settle, then I setup ready to paint. I've been very happy with the results I've been getting. I also blow the booth out with the garden blower before I pack it up as well
Instead of tape I just use some things to clean all the paint off the cup. Cheaper than tape and once it’s clean you can still see how much you have left.
What are your settings for the Iwata ws400 series 2 ? Are you dialing down the fan to the point where pressure rises like you explained in another video ?
Couple questions: is Sealer a product you buy at the paint store, or is it just primer that I would have to thin out myself? Also, I never really hear you mention flex additive on bumpers. It’s usually just the same paint sprayed as the rest of the car. Is flex additive not really needed anymore? *edit* nm you said it here, but usually you don’t mention it. Do you always use it for bumpers?
Brian, have you ever sprayed the Finish1 2:1 Euro Clear FC770 or FC780. Is so, it would be great to get your opinion on this specific clear in comparison to a FC720. I have FC770, but have not had a chance to spray it yet.
I have heard of 2 bodyshops that have their spraybooth fully climate control one of them is in Pensilvania and they do supercars, hypercars and million dollars restaurations. They use BASF paint.
Hey Brian great videos my brother! I got a question regarding ghost letters on cars. I have a mini cooper i bought to flip last and realize it has some ghosted letters leftover from decals that were on the car for about 10 years. I was wondering if you think I could try and wet sand out the ghost letters as I have tried to buff it out with my DA buffer and that did not work for me. I tried to wet sand it with 1500 grit , but I got nervous, so I stopped within the first min lol. Do you think wet sanding would work and if so, could you try to do a video on something like that for a visual understanding please?
You can try some 3000 grit and jump to polishing with a DA polisher or rotary if you are experienced. it should make it look better however I don’t think it will ever be perfect as pigment in the paint has faded that was not covered by a decal
@PaintSociety Thank you so much, Brian! I have one more for you which I should have reached out a long time ago, but I was so disappointed in the paint job I did I couldn't bring myself to the true realization that a messed up. I overthink it even though you said not to, it's just paint, lol.. So regarding the same mini cooper, I really bought it because I wanted to use it as more a project car to learn how to fix scratches and minor paint imperfections after watching a few of your videos, especially the one where you painted the side panel outside your house and you were by the water I think. So the Cooper only had minor scratches on the hood, and I must mention its silver metallic ugh the worse paint to start of with I think and seeing you painted a few silver metallic, you made it looked so easy, but obviously you're a pro lol. Man, I must say sanding seems easy, and it is, but I made so many errors until I got it right. Then priming it was another task where I made many errors but corrected them thanks to watching some of your videos. Now I paint it with one can and have it three coats, but it had some zebra stripes? Ugh, the pain, so I went and got another can and put on two more coats, which kinda made it look much better. It was not perfect, but it was looking good. I think it's my fault messing it. You were using 1k clear coat, and it looked not so lovely, I must say.. it felt rough after 3 days, and I liked it better before the 1k was added. I was nervous to wet sand it, but I did with some 1500 and then 2000. Then, I think I messed it up again by wet sanding too hard or something. The whole hood just looks awful and patchy. I would wish I could send you a photo of it, but right about not I'm thinking that I won't get it looking good using metallic silver and thinking I should just strip it back down and just do black. For some reason, I painted the bumper and some trims black, and those came out perfect. I even wet sanded the bumper, and it smoothed out. So I'm thinking I'm just not quality to paint with metallic silver .. what's your thoughts, Brian? Thank you for listening
NRD Neutralizer AC Anti-Static Gun - 6500 and Pro Xp60 Air Spray Manual Electrostatic Gun1.5 mm Nozzle $7,460 to $8300 Auto Body Toolmart $859.34 Big expense to do it right.
Brian, I have this situation, I'm painting my car in my garage and my neighbor who is annoyed by everything I do, is also bothered by the smell of paint, I have an extractor that goes towards an exit through the roof and when I paint he sees how the smoke comes out, what do you recommend given your experience, to be able to finish my car without the neighbor calling my attention, he has already called the firefighters on 2 occasions
I would just have a conversation with him and tell him that you would only need one more day to finish up and that it won’t be happening again after this. Leave or not just talking to someone and leveling with them can greatly help the situation.
Crazy amount of effort man. Don't know why you guys over seas use sealer on everything. Sanding n preparation in booth, why not just use an extra coat or two of colour and blend it clear it?? By the time your spraying base, you could be done already. And its black most forgiving colour there is
Brian is one of the few in this trade that doesn't gatekeep tips and tricks, we truly need more techs in this business to treat others the way you do.

for lexan windows and reducing static so dust stays off, they told us a rinse with 50-1 fabric softener and water works. Might be something to confirm on a test panel. prob a rinse then a water follow up ? to ensure no residue
AC in a booth would be heaven for a painter. I usually come out looking like I ran a marathon one I take off the suit and mask. If AC were possible, I’d worry about condensation.
Nice job as usual.
I spray in a homemade booth. I use slow everything especially clear coat. I spray at 70 degrees my clear coat is high solids. The flash times is 40-50 minutes after 1st coat 50-1hr after 2nd lol
thanks Brian
On your plastic parts you use a flex agent. But I thought most newer paints more or less it was formulated in. At least our te h rep said it wasn't actually needed a while back
Great video like always 👌. Hey what's the gun you using for the clear coat ?
Love your videos man. What do you think about using a heat gun to speed up flashing as a DIY guy in a garage on colder days? Is it better to invest in an infrared heater?
I would probably get the heater
I’ve be the first to experience a paint both does not guarantee a professional job. Just got my car hacked by a Bodyshop. Look like it was paint in the middle of a road.
We have 2 gfs booths both with coolers on them, only drops temp about 15 degrees but helps.
15 is a big deal! Wow
Your videos always bring me tons of fun and positivity! Thank you for your unrivaled geony and wit!🎁🏵🧁
I dont think I could wait for anything longer then 10 min flash times lol... I be like its 9 mins Lets GO!
I watch all your vids bro.awesome. whats your setting on the drizzle my nizzo lol.i just bought one. And i have a question.i see alot of almost full coverage on the first coats.are they water base?
Brian can you spray clear coat in a garage with no heat when the temp is under 50 or 40 degrees?? Thank you for your video!!!
Overspray even happens when I got the car completely messed up as good as I can. It just finds its way everywhere.
I have to use slow reducers to spray the boats without dry spray. I bake at 150 for an hour and a half. Hewes craft bakes for an hour at 185.
Thank you master for another video god bless
Yes there are paint booths with ac
I definitely did not know that, but I definitely have heard it before and I thought it was a myth lol
@@PaintSociety 👊👊the myth was busted
I knew someone smarter than me would drop some knowledge
@@PaintSociety stop it😂😂
Awesome Video!
Yeah, I’m thinking we need to try no noise canceling. I was thinking about getting the lav mic. Is it the way to go?
The dji lav is pricey but the way to go. Wire it up your shirt and youre good to go
@@PaintSociety I'll give it a try. Thanks
beautiful cat 🐱
I have the exact same inflatable booth as you do, and it's setup pretty much the same, Elephant trunk with exhaust fan, plus 2 fans blowing air in. I use medium hardener, and my flash times with clear are 5 minutes as the TDS suggests. That's in 25c temps, low humidity.
After I setup the booth, I blow it out using my garden blower (exhaust fan on), give it 5 minutes to settle, then I setup ready to paint.
I've been very happy with the results I've been getting.
I also blow the booth out with the garden blower before I pack it up as well
29:55 I’m glad it’s not just our doors that do that… drives me crazy
I left that in on purpose to see if anyone noticed lol. We even had them adjusted. No luck
Instead of tape I just use some things to clean all the paint off the cup. Cheaper than tape and once it’s clean you can still see how much you have left.
I always bag and tape my cars to the floor to prevent over spray.
Scott does great work, killer builds all out of his garage!!!
Glad someone else was a fan!
Great video. Without any consideration of price, if you had one gun for base and one gun for clear, what would they be?
Dv1 base and iwata series 2 for clear
Hey Brian ...what kind of water base cleaner are you using? Does it work for solvent base paint?
I just like 👍🏽 a professional finish and I can only see it being done ✅ in a professional Paint 🎨 Booth. JMO😅
Pro booth coupled with good technique will yield the best results. No doubt
@@PaintSociety 💡Ahh like an Graphic artist. Your talent is needed but that’s just the half of it. Neatness and quality tools are also as important.
Great video
They use BASF paint.
how far would a quart of paint cover btw love the videos.
Damn check engine light, lol
For static discharge I use a chain that makes contact with the vehicle to the ground. What is your input on this procedure?
My work has yelled at me for sanding in the booth. Sometimes you have to.
Hey Brian I don’t want to be disrespectful but you are a f*cking master painting 🔥🔥🔥🙏 amazing you can definitely teach well🎉
I appreciate that!
So I'm thinking I'm just not quality to paint with metallic silver
.. what's your thoughts, Brian? Thank you for listening
NRD Neutralizer AC Anti-Static Gun - 6500 and Pro Xp60 Air Spray Manual Electrostatic Gun1.5 mm Nozzle $7,460 to $8300
Auto Body Toolmart $859.34 Big expense to do it right.
Very pricey
A paint booth is really only needed for production
Love the channel. Just curious, do you have some masking product in the gap between the drivers door and the quarter panel?
If you watch a video and it’s entirety, you would definitely see it. Continue to watch it please
@@PaintSociety apologizes for wasting tour time. Yes, I see toward the end yes you did mask the area.
I am in a very dusty area what are your thoughts on a blowup paint booth in side my shop. Painting my 67 thunderbird
And clean the gun !!!!
I am looking for recommendations for brands of paint. Color is A22 sparkling graphite metallic. Was considering Eastwood. Any suggestions?
Hello;
I would like to know what you would advise me for a gun to make 2 wings + bmx5 engine cover, thank you in advance.
@@PaintSociety thanks 🙏🏻
Supperrr ❤❤❤
Crazy amount of effort man. Don't know why you guys over seas use sealer on everything. Sanding n preparation in booth, why not just use an extra coat or two of colour and blend it clear it?? By the time your spraying base, you could be done already. And its black most forgiving colour there is
I mean in the video i basically answered your question
