They are very underrated in my opinion.

Their second album was quite a bit better than the first, but its only U.S. hit, that I recall, was Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You).

The crazy hair and eye war paint is very much New Wave/New Romantic, the pop music style of the UK in the early 80s, which spearheaded the Second British Invasion of music into the US (the first being in the 60s). To see a prime example of this see Visage and "Fade To Grey." A Flock... did have four big songs. I recommend "Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You)" and "Space Age Love Song." There is a slightly aloof and futuristic vibe to a lot of New Romantic stuff, hence the weirdness and the cool sound without doing anything crazy!

This song by AFOS never gets old. And they have other great songs. This underrated British band won a Grammy Award for their instrumental hit D.N.A. back in 1983 🥰

"The more you live, the more you love" is my suggestion for you to "go deeper" into the AFOS. In Europe, thery are definitely no one hit wonder at all.

When this song does appear in movies, it's often in jokey reference to the time period. It shows up in the 1998 film Edge of Seventeen, which is set in 1984, and in the 1999 film The Suburbans, about an '80s cover band. In the 2016 film La La Land, Ryan Gosling's jazz-snob character ends up playing keyboards in an '80s cover band, and Emma Stone's character torments him by requesting this song and dancing along to it as he's forced to play it. They had other songs like Wishing but Ran so far away is the one they're most known for.

The movie "Blade Runner" came out the same year as this, and the female Replicants (think Darryl Hannah) had a similar look, with the black eye makeup both above and under the eye, sort of racoon-like. I wonder if that movie was the inspiration for the makeup and costumes for the women in this video?

They won a Grammy for best instrumental song in '83 (called DNA). They hold the record for band with the most plays on MTV.
They were referenced in Pulp Fiction.

AFOS is New Wave, not pop. And yes they have other songs. Try reacting to Space Age Love Song (It was used in Spider Man: Homecoming)..

Definitely not a one hit wonder. Check out any of these from the Flock: Space Age Love Song, Wishing (If I had a Photograph of You), (It's Not Me) Talking, The More You Love... a lot of their deep cuts are really awesome too and have more of a "rock" sound (You Can Run, Modern Love Is Automatic, Over the Border, Quicksand, Remember David, Heart of Steel). I love their first three albums (they totally lost their sound when guitarist Paul Reynolds left the band in 1984). They actually had a bit more success in America than they did in their native England (they're from Liverpool), so they were constantly on tour over here back in the day (the bass player, Frank, said on VH1's "Bands Reunited" they did like 137 show back to back with pretty much no breaks in 1982).

The visuals in the video relate to what the song is about, which is about the singer being abducted by female aliens. In a nutshell, the lyrics describe the singer walking along an avenue with his date/girlfriend. In the second verse, "a cloud appears" above his girl's head, and "a beam of light" shines down on her. In the third verse (following the first guitar solo), the singer "reaches out his hand to touch her face," and on the second attempt, succeeds. The next line, "floating in a beam of light with you," describes the two of them being take aboard the alien ship.

When I was younger (Much younger) there was this club in Birmingham, Alabama where I lived, called O3, it was one of those industrial style clubs and on Wednesdays they had 80's night. It wasn't a popular theme apparently, cause my friends and I were the only ones there for a long time. But instead of leaving for a busier place, ew stuck around, and ended up having a lot of fun. They played this song, and I literally ran around the dance floor dancing to this, and I recall that night with perfect clarity every time I hear this song. Love it!

I’m a 80’s girl and you got it definitely right. 80’s music was so much fun! There was something for everyone. I especially love seeing those old videos. I grew up in east Germany and we couldn’t see those videos. Now a days, understanding the lyrics, some songs I totally loved I’m thinking like “What the heck did I listen to 😂😂😂
But going to clubs was such fun. Awesome memories!

    A few tidbits:
First, they're *technically* a two hit wonder. There was this song, then 'Space Age Love Song'.
Also, this video was made back when music videos were just becoming a thing, that's why it looked so weird and awkward. They were still trying to figure out what worked.
Third, the hairstyle is due to the lead singer being a stylist. He gave himself that hairdo.
Finally, when they made the move to America, the short guitarist with the sunglasses didn't come with him. It's a pretty common belief that he was responsible for their unique sound. After he left the band, their music quality tanked pretty bad.

They actually had several songs on the US and UK charts. "Wishing" and "The More You Live, The More You Love" are 2 other songs I recall from them. I think they likely had more airplay in the UK though. There are way too many bands that never got adequate air time in the US, yet they had numerous hits in the UK. Jamiroquai immediately comes to mind. I'm just discovering these now thanks you UA-cam. I'm just glad for it!

    • @AJ17_
      @AJ17_ 2 роки тому +2

"the short guitarist with the sunglasses..." That's Paul Reynolds. And he left the band in late 1984 because he was physically & mentally exhausted from the constant touring (he was only 17 when he joined the band and 22 when he left). He said on the VH1 "Bands Reunited" episode that the stress from constantly being on the go caused him to have a nervous breakdown. But yeah, when he left, the band lost their sound. A lot of people feel Paul is one of the most underrated/unappreciated guitarists of the 80s because he wasn't around that long. But his sound helped define the 80s/new wave.
