      redraven24 You got it. That's exactly what it is. Some people make them because they really like eating them but a lot of people just resort to that when they need to cook something for dinner and they desperately don't want to. Let's see what's in the pantry. Hey, that looks like it might go together. Just throw some cheese on it and it will be alright cause cheese covers a multitude of sins.

      Angela Jeannice Ah ha ha! It's true though! I know I've made 'casseroles' on a number of occasions that consisted of canned cream soup, potatoes, cheese and whatever else I've got tucked away in my fridge that needs to be eaten. Usually tastes pretty delicious too lol. Casserole...the lazy dinner alternative.

I'm not really a casserole person but I do use the crock pot on a regular basis. You have more options and I'm all about throwing meat and veggies in a pot and showing up 8 hrs later. voila! magic :)

    As an American who was a kid in the 60s and 70s (the heyday of the casserole) I find this absolutely hilarious. The casserole has become such a part of American food landscape we forget that the rest of the world finds this puzzling. I remember my mother having a casserole cookbook and one section was a build your own. Choose a starch, a canned soup, a protein and optionally veg. Choose a topping. Whack it together an put it in the oven. So the guy who describing scraping random foods off the counter and into the dish was not far off, lol.

    • @carpy1970
      @carpy1970 7 років тому +1

      The only thing we find puzzling is your misuse of the word casserole. A casserole in English is basically a stew (generally meat, veg, gravy) that's slow cooked in the oven. You Mericans seem to use the term for any savoury dish cooked in the oven.....

    • @bumptiousbuffoon7824
      @bumptiousbuffoon7824 7 років тому +33

      Casserole refers to the type of dish it is cooked in. Anything cooked in that dish can be referred to as a casserole. I will say that in the main, for the US version, you don't have so much liquid that it would ever be confused with a stew (which I'd consider closer to a soup, even for the very thick varieties). Plus with stews you often end up browning the meat first, then putting in the oven (as with a dutch oven), whereas casseroles are only cooked in the oven. That could just be my personal experience / family tradition of casseroles though.
      ETA: Different use doesn't = misuse. Come on now.

    Actually, yes. Casseroles are lobbing left overs in a casserole (glass baking dish) and baking.
    Four parts to a good casserole:
    Carb/starch: usually pasta or rice, but potatoes can be used.
    Meat/protien: tofu or beans are often subbed in veggie/vegan casseroles. Cheese also counts.
    Sauce: no one wants a dry casserole. Most casseroles were originally made using a roux or gravy, but in the 1950's- Campbell's condensed soups took over as the sauce of choice do in part to making it faster, but mostly do to Campbell's recipes on labels. For example: the green bean casserole was featured on a can of cream of mushroom soup.
    Topping: crunch on top for color/texture. Often one of cheese, breadcrumbs mixed with butter, crumbled crackers or crisps (chips) mixed with butter, corn flakes, or fried onions...
    A fruited dessert casserole is called cobbler or crisp 🤣🤣

  • @wornoutshoes81
    @wornoutshoes81 8 років тому +277

    Attention Irish People: Casseroles were invented as a way to creatively re-use leftovers in the 60's and 70's before microwaves were common. Housewives would use casserole recipes as a way to make yesterday's pasta and glazed baked ham into a new baked single dish dinner. That's why they're all baked. There were no microwaves in the 60's and 70's. The crumbles of bread or cheese on the top are there because crunchy dried out pasta sucks so you need to cover with with something. Americans like them because they remind them of their mothers and home. Today, people don't make casseroles from leftovers, they make them from fresh ingredients. The clever re-use they were invented for has been replaced by nostalgia and comfort. Now you know.

    Casseroles are usually potluck kind of meals. Made mostly out of necessity., popularized by Moms wanting to feed a big family. What I refer to as a "One pot wonder", casseroles are easy meals because you use up leftovers, throw it in the oven & it makes for easy clean up.

    For those who don't know, Casseroles are basically either full meals, or hearty side dishes, that are cooked slowly in the oven. They usually consist of meats, cheeses, pasta, rice, and vegetables. Generally savory in nature, they're usually covered in cheese and/or breadcrumbs.
    I personally love casseroles. They have to be done right, though. The best, IMO, are baked macaroni & cheese and green bean casserole.

    • @FireCracker3240
      @FireCracker3240 8 років тому +5

      I believe the casserole dish/plate name came before the food. The word Casserole dates back to early 18th century: from French, diminutive of casse, meaning "spoonlike container". So originally, it described the deep pans, which is why they are still called that today.

Then during the week after a long day at work you take it out and bake it up and you have a whole meal in about 40 mins with no real cooking necessary. Glad you mentioned this one, though--funny, though, that you call it Southern, because I grew up on that one and am from Midwest. That's when we usually had it, too (because it makes a 9x13, big enough for all). But Mom would bust it out some other times, too, winter, mostly when it was cold. Comfort food. Try it sometime with the water chestnuts. Gives crunchy texture. So if I remember right, the other one was : two cans of cream of whatever soup plus half of an envelope of dry onion soup mixed with 1 1/4 C parboiled rice, small can (4 oz) evaporated milk. Stir, throw into the casserole dish, place chicken pieces on top and sprinkle with remaining onion soup mix. Cover it, 350F oven, walk away for an hour and fifteen minutes. Think that's it. Used to be great to throw it into the oven and study while dinner was cooking.

      yes but noodles are LONG AND THIN.... hence noodles, spaghetti or linguini or something similar.. pasta like lasagne is sheets, like macaroni is shells, or fusilli is little bits.... so that comes under the classification as pasta!, just saying you know? i will explain simply.... most english and europeans make stew... now mostly stew is meat, and vegetables in a sauce of some kind, and casserole is the same here in europe... the only difference is we cook a stew on the the hobs of the cooker... where as casserole is cooked in the oven... so do we call different names? yes.... are they basically 'pretty much the same'? guess what? YES ^_^ do we call both casserole or stew? no....

    Not sure when casseroles were thought up, but my grandmother told me that they were a way to feed huge families. They also became the signature dish brought to most Christmas dinners, and to the homes of people who recently lost a family member.
    Especially here in the deep south. My grandmother died in the 80s. My grandfather had 14 casseroles brought over by friends and relatives. He froze them, and ate them for months. True story.

    So basically casserole is another term for bake? Because at least three of those dishes would of been called a bake here in Australia. Tuna Pasta Bake (Tuna Noodle Casserole), Macaroni Cheese Bake (Mac 'N' Cheese Casserole) and Potato Bake (Scalloped Potato Casserole).

    • @katrinaleebaldwin4660
      @katrinaleebaldwin4660 8 років тому +5

      The name comes from the type of baking dish you prepare it in and not the dish itself. It's like when a brand name takes over the definition of a product (i.e. hoover = vacuum , pamper = diaper/nappy, Q-tip = cotton swab)

    • @sharielane
      @sharielane 8 років тому +4

      Ah, I see. That makes a lot of sense. We have a few incidences of that here in Australia too. (doona = duvet, esky = cooler, breville = pressed cheese toastie).

    • @JakkFrost1
      @JakkFrost1 7 років тому +1

      +Katrina Lee-Baldwin ~ That seems like a bit of a "chicken or the egg" explanation. If the food is called casserole because it was cooked in a casserole dish, why was the casserole dish called a "casserole dish" in the first place?
      +sari c ~ Yes, it does sound like they're the same types of food by different names. Also similar is the English "Bubble and Squeak", although I don't know if that's used for different varieties.

    • @sharielane
      @sharielane 7 років тому +1

      Jakk Frost Bubble and Squeak must be different in England than it is in Australia then. Here it's leftover mash, veggies, sausage (or ham/bacon if there was no sausage leftover) chopped and mixed together with egg and a bit of flour to form a batter, and then poured and fried in a frypan like little savoury pancakes. There is no baking involved whatsoever.
      My initial thought to be honest when I noticed that casserole seemed to be synonymous with bake was that it was perhaps the same difference as cookie and biscuit - cookie being a loanword from the Dutch-American settlers (from the old New Netherlands colony in present day New York/former New Amsterdam region) replacing the English word biscuit in American English.
      Casserole looks distinctly French to me. If it was such a borrowing could it perhaps been borrowed into American English from the French settlements?

    • @JakkFrost1
      @JakkFrost1 7 років тому

      sari c ~ Well, I don't live in England, haven't for over 35 years, I'm just going by what my Mum called it when she made it. Sometimes a frying pan was used, sometimes she baked it in the oven, but it was always leftovers with something else thrown in to fill the meal out a bit.

    well from what i remember being told when i was younger by my grandmother (really little, actually. i have no idea why my grandmother felt the need to go into an hour or so long history lesson about all the different - mostly terrifying - concoctions featuring gelatin + mayonnaise when i was maybe 5 years old but she sure as shit did and even though i grew up in the 90's and the US had long since recovered from the great depression of the 1930's, we were still poor as fuck and this had casseroles and such on the regular.
    *SUDDEN DAMN NEAR BRILLIANT IDEA HERE! GIMME A THUMBS UP IF YOU'RE AS INTERESTED AS I AM IN WATCHING THE LOVELY PEOPLE OF FACTS TASTE TEST AMERICAN DEPRESSION-ERA DISHES, SUCH AS ham and bananas hollandaise OR ring-around-the-tuna*
    she used to go into tangents about why certain popular dishes - such as casseroles - were a very direct way to take the "pulse of a nation", and yes that is a direct quote. it might have been odd getting economic cooking lessons, which were actually what my grandma called "Homemaking Lessons" cause she's be damned if she made the same mistakes with her granddaughter that she did with her own daughters since for some reason she didn't think either my mom or aunt were ideal wife or mother material (strictly in the cooking and sewing department not the supporting your husband and raising kids that felt nurtured and loved kind of way - you know, what matters) despite them both being wives AND mothers. either way, i have to give her mad props since i can now sew a dress out of curtains and cook a damn fine casserole while telling you the importance of said casserole in US history, AND i can still quote all her little saying - such as the "pulse of a nation" 22 years later.

    I feel like they would have "gotten" the whole concept more if you had shown them the casserole inside the casserole dish. Otherwise, right, what is it, it's just a pile of unrelated foods. Also, a "scallop" is just a shape, not a thing. Scallops the shellfish are named that because of their shape.

    • @pietrayday9915

      I think you're right about the casserole dish - the word "casserole" comes from the French for a pan or dish - it's meant to be a complete meal cooked in one dish.
      I believe the casserole really caught on in America during the Great Depression - it was a good way to prepare and use food efficiently, combining staples like pasta, rice, beans, potatoes, and corn with leftovers, and whatever of the more expensive, perhaps perishable luxury foods you could find a good bargain on - which is why it often seems to consist of foods that normally wouldn't go together. It seems to me that two of the common denominators for a casserole are cheese, and some sort of crunchy topping (bread crumbs or bacon bits are favorites.)
      I bet just about every American family that's been here since the depression has their own family recipe for casserole, and I like to invent my own after planned meals run out, and before grocery shopping, to make use of whatever there is in the cabinets and refrigerator. (Chili casseroles are great stuff! Spaghetti sauce and pasta can be combined with all sorts of stuff and topped with cheese and so on for a good casserole; I like to put beans, canned tomatoes, chopped onions, and so on in that. Prepared pinto beans with corn bread batter on top can be baked until the cornbread is done, and makes a great casserole.....)
      When you grow up with them, those casseroles really hit that spot - I
      find Tuna Casserole and Scalloped Potato Casseroles to be great "comfort
      foods", they really seem to pick up the spirits on a bad day.
      Casseroles seem so obvious, it never really occurred to me that other countries might not have that tradition - I guess a loose equivalent in Ireland and the UK might be stews or shepherd's pie? (Pot pies are similar, too, but I suspect that's another American thing.) Seems like stews, pot pies, shepherd's pie, and so on were similarly efficient ways of using food and rotated well with casseroles to keep my family going through the recessions in the 1970s and since, and hit a similar "comfort food" spot for me.

      @alwayslostinthoughts 8 років тому +2

      +Pietyr Ayday Austria (and Germany as well I suppose) has casseroles too - they are called "Auflauf" and either consist of potatoes, cream, egg, cheese, ham and/or broccoli or pasta and other stuff. There is also a sweet dish called Scheiterhaufen (really bizarre name, that's the construction used to burn witches in the middle ages) consisting of milk, eggs, cinnamon, apples and stale bread. In France, there's gratinated potatoes, in Italy, lasagna, and I'm sure there are lots of other similar dishes in many different countries.

    In the United States and continental Europe casseroles usually consist of pieces of meat (such as chicken) or fish (such as tuna), various chopped vegetables, a starchy binder such as flour, rice, potato or pasta, and often a crunchy or cheesy topping.[2] Liquids are released from the meat and vegetables during cooking, and further liquid in the form of stock, wine, beer (for example lapin à la Gueuze), gin, cider, or vegetable juice may be added when the dish is assembled. Casseroles are usually cooked slowly in the oven, often uncovered. They may be served as a main course or a side dish, and may be served in the vessel in which they were cooked.

    My grandmother made these in the 1950s and my mom in the 1960s and 1970s. I haven't seen or eaten one since then, but perhaps some Americans still bake and consume casseroles? When they were popular, I know they were considered easy to make and inexpensive. This was a good combination for a busy middle class American family many years ago.

    "Gunk with stuff on it." "Ingredients that should be separate, but you force them together." Yup, that's pretty much what a casserole is.
    I've never actually had green-bean casserole, though I've heard of it. I wonder if it's my area, or just my family. There are all theses commercials that mention it around the holidays, and I'm just "nope, not on my radar." Haven't had tun casserole, but that's because I can't stand tuna. My mom used to make it, but fortunately never made me eat it, since the smell of Tuna alone is enough to make me queasy. Never heard of corn casserole (that's definitely an area thing I'm sure). Mac and Cheese casserole... that's... pretty much just home-made mac and cheese. I think my grandma made mac and cheese that way when she made it, but that was a while ago so the memory's a bit hazy. Again, scalloped potato casserole just looks like regular scalloped potatoes, just pressed together really hard. Which I inexplicably don't like despite liking both potatoes and cheese. Just not together.
    Generally, my favorite casseroles are pizza-rice casserole (rice, spaghetti sauce, ground beef, several types of cheese, topped with melted cheese) and chicken or turkey casserole (chicken/turkey, noodles, cream of chicken soup, and assorted vegetables (typically green beans, peas, and corn, though I prefer just green beans or no vegetables. I don't like the sweetness of the peas and corn with the saltiness of the meat and soup). Oh, and hamburger casserole, which is like pizza rice casserole with noodles instead of rice and less cheese.

    In my experience casseroles are leftovers that you turn into a different meal and bake it with cheese. Sorta like soup, make roast chicken one night turn the leftovers into chicken soup. Made a ham dinner and have a lot of leftover ham, make a ham and potato casserole. It's just cost efficient. 🤷🏻‍♀️
