Yeah, it was this game that prompted me to buy a memory card. Being a skint teenager, I swapped an entire 286 PC at a local independent game shop for the said (second hand) card.
same, but i got to the Spider boss, in the underground. Start over, then beat him, and didn't know how to solve the fountain riddle, to get to umbrella... ehh.
No doubt PC always was more flexible and powerful than consoles in hardware, not the software(especially the faulty ones). But I don't understand all these Console/PC hate and wars! I don't care about the platform. As long as a game is fine and has no issues, I enjoy playing it on any platform! But the PC version of RE was a poor port from the console like many other games that ported from consoles to PC. Sure it was the developer's fault, not the platform itself. Here are some technical info about original RE for both PS1 and PC: The backgrounds in this game(which feels the screen by 90% most times) are pre-rendered 2D in 320x240px with low color-depth on both platforms, so no matter what a modern system you're using to run the game; no visual improvement comes during the gameplay, because it's already prerenderd! The PC port has low quality audio files, most of them compressed with (maximum) @22050Hz 4bit, compared to 37800Hz-Stereo 16bit on PS1 in Sony's (individual) ADPCM format. Also the sound cracks sometimes during the gameplay of the PC version(especially on many non-compatible sound cards). The cutscenes video files on the PC is compressed with an old low quality video encoder (most likely MS-Video1 format), but on PS1 compressed nicely using STR format. The game runs @30 variable frames per second on PC, but @59.94fps on PS1(NTSC Ver.)... This game designed to play using controllers not mouse/keyboard, but the PC version doesn't support controllers. This version on the video support the DualShock controller (+vibrations obviously) by default... I heard that a mod project running to fix all these issues for PC version.
Being fair, he wasn't talking about pc/console wars, he was talking about censorship, something that hit hard on consoles and the mostly never apply on PC because PC isn't ruled by a single entity like consoles (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, Microsoft, etc). Now, back to the game, I think PC version was in between, like a semi uncut?, my version has a color intro but not that long, it has a smoker Chris, but I don't remember the falling head on the first zombie...
PSX Mania Don't worry, djhenyo is just has a lot of insecurities so he needs to go PC Nazi Race to make himself feel like a big man. Of course playing a game and having fun is the most important.
I remember playing this the first time when I was a kid. My mind was exploding with:"THIS IS FUCKING AWESOME! Oh shit, it's turning dark." Turn off console. They can't get me if I turned it off.
When I was 8, I got this thinking that since I love horror movies I'd surely be able to handle horror games! No problem! The next week I was lying to the other kids about "getting to the part where the dog jumps through the window." Now I'm 28 now and flinching at RE7. The more things change...
the first time i ever saw this game, i walked in as my uncle was about to see the zombie turn and look at you the first time, and seeing that horrifying face on the t.v scared me so much that i just turned around and walked away and hid in that room until he stopped playing. for years that face alone scared the shit out of me, but then i forced myself to watch gameplay videos and artwork of that same face until it didn't give me the scared feeling anymore. now i'm fascinated looking at it
+Grundy Peebo lmao, same here,, I was 8 too, watchingy older cousin play it, that first face scared the daylights out of me. I was obsessed from that moment on, but too scared to actually play it, it wasn't til I was about 11 or 12 when I finally grew a pair and was able to beat it, and man when I beat it, I was so proud, one of my favorite series ever, beat em all, 1 2 3 4 and Veronica, I started 5,didnt finish it, never played 6 but looking forward to 7
I saw that game when I was a kid, the first Zombie turning his head around like that scared the living hell out of me. I didn't want to see the game. But of course I grew up and conquered my fears. Now it's hilarious, what's terrifying is the terrible voice acting.
Pepper Millers "There MUST be a back door somewhere. Let's go. find IT, FIRST. Shall we?" "Alright, but what about you Barry?" "Don't worry about me, I HAVE THIS!"
MetroidJunkie REmake as it's commonly called. I have it, and I usually beat it in around 3 hours. And yes, now the horror is actually the horror itself, not the voice acting. In the original it's almost as if the creators just went out of the studio and found the first american tourists they could stumble upon in the streets.
Jeopardy Professional Yeah, and it's strongly hinted that Leon is (or was) a smoker. In RE4, after you meet Luis, he asks Leon if he has a smoke, and Leon's reply is "got gum". Gum is a typical substitute for those who have quit smoking. It's confirmed in some of the art for "Resident Evil 1.5", which is the prototype for RE2. In the concept art, Leon is seen smoking alongside Chris, Joseph, and a character named D.J. (who was cut from RE2). Even if you ignore RE1.5 and Leon's "got gum" comment in RE4, it's always possible that Leon is enough of a boy scout (as in "always ready") that he carries around a lighter. One of my co-workers is like that. He's never smoked a cigarette in his entire life, but he still carries around a Bic lighter "just in case". (P.S.: for those who don't know: "Resident Evil 1.5" is what *was* going to be RE2. But as it was approaching its March 1997 release date, the developers were dissatisfied with the game. Rather than releasing a game they were unhappy with, the developers took the risk of cancelling the game and developing the game again from scratch. That's why RE2 didn't come out until January 1998. Leon's lighter is one of the carryovers from the original game design.)
rainner31 Whenever I heard that sound I was always sitting on the floor in front of the tv, controller in hand waiting patiently because I knew i had about 45 seconds of straight up load time before I could actually play.
The director's cut was supposed to have the full color uncensored into in the US. When the game was submitted to Capcom of America, it was rejected because of incorrect copyright info in the intro movie. Instead of editing in the proper text, Capcom of Japan (who did the localization work) just put back the censored movie as it was already correct and the game was printed that way.
I heard some Romero(a famous zombie movies' director) dude this. The Japanese guys were so impressed that they wanted him to make a movie at that time.
I remember watching a live stream of someone playing RE1 and they cut the Friends intro song over the RE intro part when its showing all the characters. It went so well together. Made me lol

Every time I hear them say Resident Evil, I'm always waiting for them to say Resident Evil 2. As much as I have played that game. That was all I would hear.

Good times playing this game , I remember like yesterday always waiting for the night time when everyone’s sleeping, so I could play alone without lights and completely quiet home, the only thing what i seen was the screen and the game sounds having %100 game interaction !!!! Who never played like that needs to do it, believe me it’s the best experience ever maximizes all game potential !!!
Fun fact: The French copy of the game was released completely uncut, with the intro in colour, the bloody parts, and the shot of the mutilated head just before the zombie turn away.
I actually liked how when you booted up the game, the PS1 intro comes in first. :D I wished I had a PS console instead of the N64 (I had the N64 since 2007)
I played this game when it came out on the ps1 back in the 90s.....I was blown away....voice acting....story....scary....one of the first of its kind....beat it....and was scared as hell....those days I use to be home alone a lot at night and MAAAAAN talk about good times
I prefer the directors cut version. It's more tasteful and sometimes the hitchcockian mantra of less is more applies. Dont get me wrong, I'm a gore dude but here the d.cut trumps it for me. EXCEPT Chris lighting the smoke. That's badass.
Nope the violence of the game was complete uncut. The only thing we still missing on the directors cut is the rolling head. The heavy cut Resident Evil games are 2(Soft banned), 3 (no blood, no capitations) and Code Veronica(Soft banned both versions) But since last year every Resident Evil game from the main series are not banned anymore :)
It was first released with the colour intro, afterwards it was in Germany the same thing, the BPJM checked the game, then afterwards, the crap black & White intro was the only thing to get in exchange for your good Money...
The PC version got as a child had those uncensored cutscenes. And here I was, disappointed that I didn't have a PlayStation here to first experience it on. Ha!
Back then, it was fundamental for our parents to keep us away from this stuff. Then, things got out of hand when they decided bring it up to local governments to make them cancel gore in video games.
The good o' days. Love this game. Still do. Love the eerie music, dialogue is bad but still awesome horror game. First time playing it when it first came out on ps1 had me scared for awhile. Developed a fear of the undead for awhile. Thinking something lurking in the dark🙈..lol. Today no prob🙉. Still awaiting the Re2 remake and possibly "ourbreak" ports to ps4.
The german Director's Cut version had the full uncut intro video in color and introduction from the STARS members, but was cut in the scene with the first zombie, the falling head was cut out, the rest was uncensored.
left side: "this game contains explicit violence and gore" right side: title card left side at 3:10: a newspaper right side at 3:10: a freakin' dead body
I love how they say "There are only 3 STARS members left..." proceed to show at least 5 memebers in the cast.
Well technically there was only 3 they were looking for the previous team and knew of the radio call from Rebecca and Barry did go missing that's 5 should've been 6 tho cause of brad

Terry Hesticles Damn. FF7 without a memory card? I commend you. I lost my data because a memory card got corrupted and felt something die inside me.

same, but i got to the Spider boss, in the underground. Start over, then beat him, and didn't know how to solve the fountain riddle, to get to umbrella... ehh.
lol true. I kept playing and playing from the start and it is so frustrating
The uncut version is pure gold
I own it
Why?
MARITOXCS glad play original no cut version for me
You can always buy the Japanese release to legally own an uncensored copy.
MARITOXCS I have numerous versions including Japanese with the full uncut intro and fmv video's.
Damn and here all this time I thought the Director's Cut WAS uncut
You got punked hard. Get it on PC and you'll see all the shit that they thought console kiddies couldn't handle at the time.

The Head falling just makes that cutscene so much better. Doesn't feel completed without seeing Kenneth's Head fall off.
fun fact: the voice of Chris is also Richter from Casltevania SOTN
Sam M really ?
Sam M he also died in 2001 :(

Sam M #MINDFUCK!
they should've just kept the uncut version man
Remember, this was back when Mortal Kombat 1 was controversial.
well I would say that a steaming load of dog shit for ya if there ever was one! fuck censorship!.
Yet the game is still violent and had a age restriction why censor it?
I still shit my knickers at that.
@BIGWORM 510 where was the censorship? I guess i missed it..OG RE is still the best because there was no reason to change it.
Rebecca Chambers looks like she's in a SitCom
hahahaha
This whole games reminds me of a sit com
Everybody does... and am I the only one who thought (even in 1996-1997) that Chris's character model looked stupid (disproportionate)?
Emperor_Exodus it kinda hurts looking at his deep regret face

The Game, Music and sounds use to scare me as a kid. I still find it creepy now.
Tyro Horse agreed .. gives me goosebumps
For the longest time re1 was the creepest re game, in my opinion, it still creeps me out, but that's why i love it :)
funny enough, i never thought it was scary but an awesome game with story.

Bruno Ferreira lmao they gave it better music in our version.
Yup, you'd literally find better acting in porn.

I had forgotten how incredible dated the original game looks and sounds. Despite the PSx graphics, RE2 and RE3 Nemesis were huge improvements.
Joseph got FUUUUUCCCKKKKEED. Also, poor Zombie man, he was trying to get that happy meal is all.

Chris smoked? Lol
World of Retro Gameplay leon smoked too thats why in RE2 and even Code Veronica both male characters has a lighter as a personal item

It makes absolutely so sense to censor an M-rated game.
Holy shit. It was brutal, no wonder they cut it
Veith Servius they only cut it for some countries..
Europe Director's cut has the Uncut intro and "where is wesker"music , but not the falling head.
I was lucky enough to get a copy of the PC version which is totally uncut afaik. Blew my little mind seeing the intro complete with smoking.
@davintheraven
Well, the French version of the game was also in english, with french subtitles.
Ok, it's only logical, for an fully translated game (text-translated), but I always prefered the english voices.
that was finally clever of Europe and Australia too.
My PAL-Spanish copy has the uncut too. It's the first release. It's not Director's cut, the cover is just "Resident Evil". I bought it at its release date :D

Three things:
1. "Bizzar murders" at 03:06?
2. Joseph's death is much more gruesome in the Uncut version.
3. 05:48 Apparently Chris' smoking was too much for some audiences :D
It wasn't too much for some audiences. It was too much for hypocritical idiots like Tipper Gore trying to censor everything in the US at the time.
Well that sheds some light as to why Kenneth's head was completely severed
I love how Wesker has so much gel and yellow hairspray in his hair that he can’t actually run his fingers through it or anything. He just awkwardly touches it
I though back then "directors cut" actually have a more content than the original, in fact it is a censored version

the intro videos looks silly and awesome at the same time
the best part is that wesker still looks the same after all those years
I'm not really gonna ask why this is in my recommendations at this point since this seems to be how youtube works now.
But the most obvious differences I can list are;
The content warning on startup in the DX cut
The Capcom logo animation looks more modern in the DX cut
The biggest difference: opening cutscene to uncut version is longer and more gorey
DX cut opening is in black and white (since it was censored they probably tried to make it look more scary with a filter)
Might have been just a sound glitch, but DX cut lists the surviving characters
Stupid censorship: Uncut shows Chris Redfield smoking
Uncut has a rock song playing during character introductions, porbably censored in DX due to music licensing
Uncut zombie cutscene shows victim's decapitated head
As much as I prefer the Uncut ver, I thing the rock song pretty much detracts from the overall feel from the game and makes out to be some sort of parody. But why would you censore smoking IN A ZOMBIE SURVIVAL GAME?
Editing skills on point.

Smoking Chris at 5:50 is one of the coolest things I have ever seen. Reminds me of the 80s when smoking was still cool.
:D I wished I had a PS console instead of the N64 (I had the N64 since 2007)
Nathan Darkson The Hoovy Lord Get a ps2
You can play ps1 aswell obviously and ps2 games
Nathan Darkson The Hoovy Lord get both what's the problem
Chris' shaking of the head while looking menacing is a close tie with his hilarious lighting up of the cigarette for best RE moment EVER.
The uncut is more gore and cool!!
I had the ds version as a kid and the line " now he's become a mere shadow of his former self" made my skin crawl
jill sandwich
This is a great edit! Thumbs up!!
Hahaha this game won't let me sleep at night when I was a kid.
The Windows 95' virgin interactive computer release is uncut and not all goofy. A gem in my collection.
7:40 That’s Pretty Good...
I always lost it at the "TING!" of Kenneth's head falling.
Why did his mauled, decapitated head sound like a microwave finishing?! XD
How else would you know he's done?
Its a classic oldschool horrorsample. Its not the sound from the head. It stands for gore. Friday the 13 movies had it much too.
Sure wish the uncut version was the version released on ps1, the cutscenes look so much better even with the poor graphics we had then.
I played this game when it came out on the ps1 back in the 90s.....I was blown away....voice acting....story....scary....one of the first of its kind....beat it....and was scared as hell....those days I use to be home alone a lot at night and MAAAAAN talk about good times
So I always played the shitty-version, why did they have to cut everything goddamn it. This is not a question.
I prefer the directors cut version. It's more tasteful and sometimes the hitchcockian mantra of less is more applies. Dont get me wrong, I'm a gore dude but here the d.cut trumps it for me. EXCEPT Chris lighting the smoke. That's badass.
Ahh yes first zoombie scene, when i saw it i was 7 and it scared the shit out of me :D
That original Capcom intro stillkinda gives me the shivers. (The one to the left....to be precise)
What's weird about this.. As from germany I only remember the Directors Cut with the colored intro.
The German release has full color video, but I believe it's censored either...
Nope the violence of the game was complete uncut. The only thing we still missing on the directors cut is the rolling head. The heavy cut Resident Evil games are 2(Soft banned), 3 (no blood, no capitations) and Code Veronica(Soft banned both versions)
But since last year every Resident Evil game from the main series are not banned anymore :)
It was first released with the colour intro, afterwards it was in Germany the same thing, the BPJM checked the game, then afterwards, the crap black & White intro was the only thing to get in exchange for your good Money...
oh i think you french and germany your time we will fill in some missing scenes.
Kudos to you psx mania that is what we should have got back in 97. Excellent job my friend.
I love the background at the start, cool as hell, 4:21 hahaha always makes me laugh =P
The uncut is so much better, like a cheesy 80's action horror.
The PC version got as a child had those uncensored cutscenes. And here I was, disappointed that I didn't have a PlayStation here to first experience it on. Ha!
haha I didnt remember the character introduction that cheesy, looks like a typical sitcom show intro from the 90s
Strange. I remember it like this: the standard game was the left side and the directors cut was the right side.
this is why I am against censorship the right one was awesome.
I strongly agree with you. I'm against censorship as well!
Donatas Simaitis Good point. I mean it IS supposed to be an adult rated game...
It's not censorship in this case , the final product has to be more polished in the eyes of the director.. whether you agree or not
Back then, it was fundamental for our parents to keep us away from this stuff.
I'm glad that my childhood was with the uncut
Holy fuckin shit? This is so good !
The german Director's Cut version had the full uncut intro video in color and introduction from the STARS members, but was cut in the scene with the first zombie, the falling head was cut out, the rest was uncensored.
It's amazing; this series started off as a gory version of scooby-doo...
TOTALLY
I like how it just freezeframes to prevent you from seeing that the hand is cut off.
i missed that clicking sound BGM lol
Rain ouchen They actually recycled the re2 inventory click sound at a door keypad in re7.
thanks for the info dear s.kennedy
I am having a little marathon on my PVM tomorrow night with RE1 and RE2 on PS1. Ohhh shit I'm psyched. Been a minute since I played these classics.
Uncut version > RE5 ,RE6,RE7
The DS version has the uncut head falling off sequence, but the intro is edited
true.
HAHAH!! «I got a shotgun!», oh this is so much better than the cut version.
thats right we did Uncut Version Uncut Version kicks ass than cut version. suck it congress suck it censorship niggas.
left side: "this game contains explicit violence and gore"
right side: title card
left side at 3:10: a newspaper
right side at 3:10: a freakin' dead body
Am I back in 2006 again?
Eduardo Duarte this is 1996 you dumb fuck
Negan nageN I think you haven't got the joke, I'm talking about the video format and the music style used, you smarty pants.
Negan Winchester dam.you a mad ass nigga!
Video editing at his finest!
Uncut = gore's festival of RE.
