This video took me a tad longer than expected to create, apologize for the inconvenience and am grateful for the patience you all have had with me as I try out new editing techniques! I still edit all my videos completely on my own, from weeks if not months of researching, scripting, to voice-over, to overlays and so forth, and this video covered complex and nuanced topics I wasn’t quite sure I wanted to unpack. Given the video is already 2 weeks past my intended schedule there’s a few things I didn’t get to explore further and I hope in the future I’ll have the time to discuss those things more in depth. For now, I hope you all enjoy either reliving or learning about the scandalous controversy Rainbow High has faced in its 3 years of existence and the various facets to this reboot and how I believe it can be salvaged. Please share your thoughts on the reboot below, are you content with the changes, what would you do differently? Are there ideas or theories you have about Rainbow High you hope come true? Excited to read all of your wonderful thoughts!

I'm excited to see the new rebrand RH in stores! Maybe if the line goes well, they'll add characters like Poppy, Krystal, Bella and others into a second lineup? That'd be cool. I do agree a lot with the points you make in the video. Especially with how the line could improve. I'd love to see more fashion-focus dolls too. Or at least more dolls expressing their hobbies. Like, what about Poppy with a mini turntable or DJ booth playset? 🙂

Thank u for covering this! I was hoping you would. RH needs to find a better balance and I believe leaning more into Harajuku fashion would please adults and younger fans..also leaving the new line going along the more detailed line..also making a disabled and plus sized RH doll could also refresh the line..like a kawaii wheelchair would be gag worthy

You said everything that has to be said. I would like to add that it's a good move because the collectors (that are grown up people who likes fashion) can buy bratz and children can buy rh. Childs nowadays don't like bratz so that's why they decided to move the fashion design team to bratz. Even with this cheaper reboot rh is still a better quality doll line than any doll line from mattel. And now mattel is trying to copy mga again with rereleasing myscene and releasing a doll line that wants to compete with bratz (even if I don't think that there isn't any chance to be better than mga/bratz for quality, prices, distribution and designs)

@@Alienaddikt Maybe the problem is that Bratz wouldn't have worked with a lot of Rainbow High Fans. So many of us came to the scene just for Rainbow High. There isn't nastolgia us them.
Honestly imo, Bratz fashion is dark and ugly. I like magical girls, sweet lolita, sanrio, and idol anime like Aikatsu, Pretty Rhythm, and Pripara, and Rainbow High fit's that perfectly. Bratz doesn't fit that, and I don't think they could unless they totally rebooted the brand. Four girls against the world isn't anywhere near that culture.
MGA has a huge audience of adult collectors under rainbow high who won't switch. I hope this becomes a big problem for them.

What surprises me more about the reboot me is that I believe MGA is underestimating kids. When I was a little girl I used to play with dolls and me and my friends all enjoyed the hair/dress-up game way more than the pointless accessories. We could recreate normal items easily with paper, however we could NOT recreate a second outfit to change our dolls and mix and match. Also, I know both me and specially my parents (who ultimately were the ones who bought me the dolls) would hate slime. Its messy and after you make it, stuff it into the purse and then what??? If kids wanted slime sensory play, there are WAY cheaper slime toys. If you buy a doll, it’s because you enjoy playing WITH the doll. I honestly think they are underestimating childs a lot by making everything glittery, tinsel and shiny and it’s exactly the same mistake Mattel made when Bratz came out and won over Barbie marketshare: kids also want edgy and fashinonable looks! Even spooky looks like MH. I’m not making suppositions, I know this because that’s how I used to feel about my dolls when I was a kid. And that’s how all my peers used to feel. Kids are not so dumb as companies think.

    • @psychotophatcat
      @psychotophatcat 5 місяців тому +44

Yes, thank you! People who underestimate children or who assume kids only want gimmicks strike me as people who only know one kind of kid. As a kid I never went for dolls like these, I always wanted the most intricate and beautiful ones. Granted I had a few kind of gimmicky Barbies (Rappin' Rockin' Barbie, anyone?), but they were still aesthetically beautiful and interesting! I took great care of them because I valued them. Assuming that all kids are simple or don't notice quality is such a disservice to them :(
Minis are super popular right now, given the popularity of blind box style miniatures, so going all in with really creative accessories would be understandable. They started to do that with the last Shadow High release, which I do like! The clothing and jewelry had to take a hit to make it happen and that sucks, but I get it. However, this new line isn't even doing that! No matter what they say, they aren't taking advantage of kids who like to play at all. The slime gimmick is a one-time thing. It's not like they give instructions on how to make more on your own. The pet figures aren't posable -- limiting their play potential -- and they aren't soft like most kids prefer these days (see Squishmallows). What focus group did they manage to form that didn't give them this basic framework for what is desirable and trendy? Or hey, maybe they know something I don't and it'll be a runaway hit, but I really doubt it.

Moreover, after the appearance of Monster High dolls in 2013, the concept arose of collecting a doll, appreciating its quality, immersing itself in history, and this hooked me as a child, I also paid attention to details, bought unique characters, and children who heard about Monster High of the first generation and seeing the qualities of other dolls they can also make a choice for the best quality doll by looking at the review 🧐

I think they are moving to smaller kids in the age 4-6 range. most kids this age do not have the fine motor to be able to dress up the dolls without assistance. The age 7-8+ range I agree 100% with you. My 8 year old niece is all about the fashion.

I used to watch MyFroggyStuff diys all the time and made my dolls a bunch of things. Most of the items I had weren't even real doll brands just stuff my aunt bought for me at flee markets. Kids are crafty but most of us really cant sew her dolls new clothes

I absolutely agree. When I was a bit younger I was always annoyed when I got low quality dolls like ripoff Barbies, half-bald dolls or boring new Barbies. My fav doll was always that one 1st gen Mariposa Barbie doll because she was way higher quality than most of my other dolls, she has cool fashion, giant glittery wings and super nice hair. I got her used in a whole lot of dolls, but she was still so cool, even friends of mine found her gorgeous. Also I always loved the nice colour schemes of older Barbie dolls in comparison to newer Barbie dolls.
I always felt like toy companies don‘t really take kids seriously when releasing half-bald dolls with low quality hair and low quality fashion. If the Gen 1 RH dolls came out back then, I would have absolutely LOVED them.
Also I made accessories myself too. I built doll houses (but they actually fell apart most of the time lol, except if i built them from Lego-like stuff), I made small laptops and flip phones, little necklaces, LOADS of cardboard cars (random sedans, huge limousines, convertibles, station wagons and specific cars like VW Golf 2, Ford Fiesta '99 and '09, Citroen Berlingo 1, Opel Astra F station wagon and some more) and I even tried to sew dresses. Unfortunately I failed most of the time, but some of the dresses were actually not that bad.

My theory like with Bratz from back in the day are dolls aged for kids going through the “ odd phase” - 8-13 - more “mature” themed clothes. I think the company with all the other dolls on market tried to make dolls that could appeal to kids who grew up mainly on tech and get them to play and or invest into the pop culture. I don’t think RH were ever made as the “ first doll”. That was Barbie for my child and all the clothes and cheap plastic crap - it was garage - so she got into RH and loved them and has plenty of the dolls -
I think it would be easier to make a doll that each and anybody could enjoy if they liked them - it’s that simple. People think too much about it , put too much pressure on company, sales could have declined because most the time aside from Christmas in the states - the shelves stay stocked up - this year I got older series off Amazon instead of the new ones in stores - my child likes the extra outfit sets since she has the closet.
Simply I think you just can’t please everyone and in this day in age - people just can’t mind their business and shut up. Another hypocritical aspect is people getting mad about the clothes not being “ appropriate “ but also allow their 10-13 year olds to twerk on the tok ? 😂😂
MGA should just keep the original first 1-4 series and allow the dolls to be unique.

  • @psychotophatcat
    @psychotophatcat 5 місяців тому +56

The huge problem with the "they were always for kids" arguement is that dumbing down the dolls doesn't include the original demographic age range anymore. Lots of people have posted talking about how their children are upset at the changes and feel like the new dolls are too "kiddy." Children aren't as dumb or unaware as people think, they notice when something gets worse. The fact of the matter is MGA was, intentionally or not, making Rainbow High dolls for slightly older kids, like 7-13, yet are now targeting kids as young as 4 by removing small parts and intricate clothing in favor of immobile pet figurines and slime. That's a huge age gap, and a really strange decision when MGA already has the LOL Surprise line for kids that age. I would have loved to be a fly on the wall of those business meetings to see what convinced the higher-ups to throw out the broad reach of an elementary school to adult aged audience in favor of kindergartners.
In addition to your ideas in the video, I think they should focus on a few extra high end doll releases like Lily to cater to the adult collectors. $85 price tags for really nice collector dolls wouldn't be such a horrifying amount if they really invested in the details and weren't releasing 10 dolls every 3 months like they were for a while there. Saving up to get one really nice doll instead of three play dolls would be a worthwhile effort for me.

I think the absolute beauty of Rainbow High was that it could be for so many ages. Kids loved it, collectors LOVED it. Customisers might've had some pains with the eyes but the diversity is to die for. This always happens with a gen 2, companies not really understanding or listening and wanting to go for quick money. They JUST started diversifying heights, so I don't see why they'd stop now. As an Aussie, its been hard to get a hold of some of the dolls (from any doll line tbh) so what we do get is always sold out fast! My issue with “for girls” has nothing to do with collectors or gay men. My grandson is 2.5yo, so his “sexuality” is not a focus for many years, or ever (if he’s safe and happy, it shouldn’t matter), but he LOVES his doll and dollhouse I have created for him. He also plays with cars, blocks, and books, since toys should not focus on gender…EVER! I got him a Karmas world doll to play with because I wanted a smaller more childlike figure, still larger than Chelsea. Especially since Mattel cannot seem to create a blond blue-eyed little boy (or a bald-headed bearded tall dad boded male figure). He saw the red headed Switch character and indicated he wanted her. When I tried to put her back, he cried, so I bought her for him. He chooses clothes for her, puts her to bed, has her drive his Barbie tractor. She is one of his favorite toys. Him playing with dolls, plushies, and his dollhouse is not going “create” an orientation later, as the idiot “experts” would state, he will be whomever he will be. But, it certainly will teach him about daily routines, house keeping, design, and imaginative play. Not to mention empathy, kindness, and a nurturing father, should he choose to become one. His doll has a dog and a cat. They got a new pet for “Christmas” and had presents. He is the only grandchild I have and I want to share my hobbies with him. I only collect a few dolls, but I like to build for his dollhouse and mine. The 1/8 scale is good practice for figuring out my 1/6 scale.
When it comes to the reboot. I like the more childlike features. Slimes are the devil though, almost but not near as bad as flipping glitter! As adults, we are not the target audience, but toy companies need to recognize we are here to stay and getting stronger everyday. Creating fashion packs, play sets WITHOUT another doll, multifunction packaging for display purposes, and real world accessories and color schemes, would greatly increase their bottom line by catering to actual money earners who have chosen NOT to have children, but enjoy nurturing their own inner child. Not EVERYTHING has to have tinsel, glitter, sequins, be female, and bright vomitous colors. And…can we please stop with the “poop” toys? Come on, scat humor is funny for kids but encouraging playing in “poop” is just gross!

From this video, the main takeaway is that the constant complaints and dissatisfaction from collectors led MGA to end Rainbow High (RH) as we know it and reboot it for a younger audience. Unlike adult collectors, kids are generally more satisfied with the toys they receive and are less likely to complain.
MGA initially created an amazing line for adult collectors with high-end fashion and attention to detail. However, according to the video, they faced continuous backlash from collectors, regardless of their efforts. Based solely on the content of this video, if I were MGA, I would consider steering clear of adult collectors and focus on a different demographic.
In my opinion, as gleaned from this video, adult collectors may have become too accustomed to the quality MGA initially provided and became overly critical. Over the years of collecting RH, I enjoyed watching specific UA-camrs review the dolls. However, I grew concerned when influencers started complaining excessively about minor details.
If we revisit videos from the first series of RH, the initial reviews were overwhelmingly positive and enthusiastic. However, as new dolls were released, people began complaining about increasingly minor issues, turning them into significant problems. Perhaps MGA listened too much to the collectors and responded to almost every complaint, leading collectors to continually find new things to criticize.
In essence, it seems that MGA found itself in a situation where, no matter what they did, collectors wouldn't be satisfied. This constant negativity prompted them to switch to a kinder audience - kids.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts based on the video! 💕 I wish I'd worded myself differently and emphasized certain parts more based on this feedback, because the true reason Rainbow High rebooted is allegedly because of the constant criticism, the design team fractured, and from there MGA hired a new head to market the brand which caused the line to undergo significant changes. With the original designers off the brand, there was no one to advocate and fight for the brand to maintain its key elements, in other words the balance between creative and corporate began to weigh too heavily in corporate territory. Allegedly the new marketing head refused to allow any designs to have the color black be used in any designs, and if there was black it had to minimal, this first started with Shadow High series 3 & the "new friends" line, with this new marketing head ridding the line of any dark or edgy colors, and cutting shadow high entirely from the "new friends" line. Another example of marketing holding power is the Maria Garcia controversy, many fans called MGA out for what they felt was a misrepresentation of Dia De Muertos and traditional symbols, allegedly, the marketing team made Maria Garcia undergo significant changes based on what sells best, marketing claimed that Roses sell better than Marigolds, and Red & Purple sell better than the color orange, hence why the doll was made red in a Spanish style dress. Marketing teams are focused on the "business" they are the "suits", my initial goal of the video was to convey that marketing and design teams need to work in harmony in order have the best product but many bits of my video had to be cut and removed though I now wish I'd had featured some of the key points I mentioned above to avoid creating further confusion.

@@Clawdeena9 I really appreciate your response. It definitely enriches the content of the video for me. I based my opinion on criticisms I heard from other collectors' videos over the years. Negativity and criticism were, unjustifiably, always present. Quality control is maybe the only true reason to complain, but it could be understood and expected, as with any mass production.

I'm not as well-versed as you in the backstage operations of MGA. I usually get the information through other UA-camrs, so if there are functional changes to the company that led MGA to take a different path with RH, I wouldn't know.

There is one little detail that folks overlook when it comes to MGA. They are privately owned still by Isaac Larian, meaning they don't answer to shareholders. That also means they receive no money from outside investors, which means if something isn't doing as well or if it's too expensive, the only one who can take care of it is Isaac Larian. As a person who knows a little bit of the workings of doll production, it's mind boggling the tiny details that MGA had been putting into these dolls in particular, the dolls should have been even more expensive than what they were retailing for, especially with current production costs in Asia, and something tells me those choices were catching up to them forcing them to streamline.

    • @novembercrust

I don't think the doll community critically talks about Isaac Larian nearly enough. He seems like a very skeezy, very weird, bad to work for boss, who is probably not treating/paying any of his employees from the office to the factories right, does not know what the kids, moms, fashion girls, OR the gays want because I am not even sure if he talks to any of them outside his circle of people within his same income bracket. I am of course speculating, but that's the vibe I get from him. And I am pretty sure MGA's GlassDoor page will back me up.

When my youngest was a kid playing with dolls, those dolls had like 15 costume changes. They were all about the clothes. And their favorite doll was the Katnis barbie...because she was articulated and that added so much to the play value. My kid could move and pose that doll however they wanted. Plus she looked awesome in all of the clothes my kid had. My Scene and Bratz were favorites also because of the fashion. And this was an 8 year old excited about fashion and poseablilty. I don't understand how people fail to realize that something can be for children and still be sophisticated. Ie. the original Bratz, Monster High and Ever After High. All of these brands were made for children yet still appealed to adults because of how innovative and fun they were. Rainbow High can be "for kids" without being reductive and removing key details. Disney movies are "for kids" yet The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and any other Disney classic continues to be hugely successful because it speaks to hearts, not ages. People act like kids didn't enjoy Rainbow High before, but they clearly did based on how hugely successful the brand has been - and as mentioned in the video we ALLEGEDLY aren't getting a reboot because of a decline in sales, it's because the original team is no longer working on the brand.

😡 I wanted the Poppy Rowan Runway doll, I couldn't indulge myself while getting ready for Christmas, so I hoped to find one after Christmas, they are all gone, selling for outrageous price - I am so disappointed it's not funny - shame on you MGA!!! I have the original Poppy, and her teen. I am very upset!!

Well, darn. I never picked up a Rainbow High doll because I just never found one I liked (I personally thought most of the fashion was hideous, but I understood that others liked it a lot, it just wasn't my personal taste.)
Now I'll keep an eye out for the last few on shelves to see if something catches my eye before they're gone forever.

Imo they want to deliberately push away the adult costumer base to drive them more towards Bratz as they seem to have high hopes for the comeback. They target a younger audience for RH probably to fill the gap left by adults.

RH and SH got me (an adult) into doll collecting. They were the most special dolls I had ever seen. I am so happy about the dolls I have and I will continue to "play" with them. My 5 year old daughter and 7 year old son have a few of them. Neither child has enough fine motor skills to redress them. My son likes the look of SH vs RH. My 5 year old's eyes bugged out with joy when she saw the new slime dolls on you tube. She was all in for the slime, sparkles, and pets. I will probably get her one for her birthday, but none for me. I would be happy to buy collector dolls if reasonably priced. The Storm twins are masterpieces and I would love them to move in that direction for collector dolls.

the thing is, they want rainbow high to downfall. they dont csre about rainbow high anymore. they care about bratz. they know bratz will sell and want to focus on that, so they will just throw rainbow high away eventually.
i think it doesnt mean that its an complete end of rainbow high, but rainbow high wont be anything special for now
they want rainbow high to downfall so everyone will focus on bratz.

I feel like...the slime dolls *could have been* the little siblings to the rainbow high cast if they thought hard enough about it. That would have been a pretty decent way to grab the attention of younger fans as well instead of rebooting and changing literally everything. 😅 As a person who designs characters for fun, the new dolls are cute, but they're missing something that would give them life like the original dolls had.

Makes me wonder if it was also because some parents complained and MGA was forced to bow down to whiny Karens. This sort of stuff happened to many popular doll lines and ends up killing the lines.

  • @emilie9269

I love this kind of doll debate videos ❤
Personally, I am a huge fan or rainbow high for mostly 3 things : the quality of the outfits, the articulations and the diversity in the dolls
However I feel like all this is going away with MGA’s will to bring back older dolls that in my opinion are not relevant anymore. Having Bratz dolls celebrating the 20th year anniversary is ok and some collabs can be fun too, but investing everything in this when RH and LOL are so popular and more in line with what collectors and kids want seem irrelevant to me and a waste of very qualitative dolls
On the other hand, of course I don’t know if these dolls really work the way MGA want or if it’s just a hit for doll collectors, but I feel like leaving us behind is a mistake (that’s a very subjective opinion of course 😅)
So, even though it requires a certain budget, bringing back second outfits and qualitative fashion packs as well as more kid-focused dolls might be a good idea so that everyone has something that works for them
Hopefully they’ll take doll collectors’ opinion in consideration in the future

i legit fell in love with rainbow high and Shadow high for the fashion, high quality and moveability. as a child i always hated Barbie and preferred monster high due to how stiff i felt Barbie was with no elbow, wrist or knee movement. i was speechless for legit minutes when i found out about the thigh movement and now i feel that they just threw that all out the window, when i tell you i would spend hundreds on one of their dolls im not joking, as for the rebooted dolls im not spending a dime. i haven’t even been collecting very long (i have 4 dolls in total) and i feel like i’ve been betrayed, in an effort to appeal to kids they lost all the teenagers and adults who are much more willing to spend their money recklessly then a parent with children. i also hate the way they tried to push “dolls are for girls”, dolls can be enjoyed by everyone of any age, gender, sexuality or race. i’m still shocked companies haven’t learnt from Monster Highs gen 2 dolls and realize reboots are never good (i see doll customizers still complain about gen 2 to this day)

Superb video Thanks Clawdeena! I do love the new Dolls with pets even if less Articulated, intensely dislike the Slime though, as for the Glitter ermm not great but it brightens up the dollie shelf! This is a bit off the beaten track but I'd love to see MGA bring out a pippa sized fashion doll pack with say 2 outfit changes possibly for the collector Market, Pippa was approximately 6 to 7 inch tall, I design doll clothes so available if MGA'S needs advice 😊

I can't find any G3 MH dolls in shops or online so I started getting into RH because of their poseability and fashion options, aiming to take parts to build a "me" doll.
I HATE LOL dolls and slime toys and these reboots are a NO for me. Won't be buying one.
I'll be sticking with the pre-slime reboot dolls while they're still relatively easy to find and affordable but prices ARE going up fast.

I understand why they are doing what they are doing. Bratz had been around longer and stood up really well to Barbie in those years so with their continued fan base I can see why they want to jump on the Barbie live action movie trend. They have a lot more chance to grow where in Rainbow Highs show is much more childish. I would love to see more themes expressed in the show that would relate to children and adults alike. Hey, if Bluey can do it so can you! I am interested in some of the new dolls. I think Sunny, Jade and surprisingly Violet are really pretty. Not sure if I will get any of them as I may want to focus my money on finding dolls from the before times. Also, those fashion packs are such a let down. I would spend more money on better fashions, maybe even double fashion sets that had mix and matchability. There does not feel like there is really any designer references in the new lines or the packs.

The rainbow ride that adult collectors had known for the short three years is over and for many practical reasons will be not be invested in (as it was) ever again. Bratz going forward as a proven staple for MGA (like it or not) is the company's best and far less complicated move going forward to reach a larger and more age diverse demo graphic for financial profitability.

    • @Clawdeena9
      @Clawdeena9  5 місяців тому +2
