This has been my favorite video EVER to create - it's basically a documentary. It wasn't easy to be so vulnerable and open up about parts of my childhood but I'm hoping in sharing I can help inspire future generations of doll collectors. If you're a doll collector, let me know your story below! Let's help normalize doll collecting and show the world the wonderful world of dolls!! 💕

I’m autistic and my special interest at the moment is the classic Barbie movies from my childhood. So naturally, I have three cabinets full of Barbie dolls from the movies. For a lot of autistic people, collecting stuff about our special interests brings so much joy. My mom thinks it’s weird but other than that, whenever I made a new friend, they loved seeing my doll collection. None of them think it’s weird to be into dolls and for that I’m grateful

I'm also autistic I've been in the doll community and doll costomising community for about 4 years now so I started at the age of 13. My parents were always very supportive. The first monster high doll I bought and played with for years I still have because I shoved it in a corner of my room. When I needed to clean it when I was little so it didn't get thrown away luckily. The dolls I repaint are different in many ways. Now I am branching out to rainbow high. I never got bullied even though there were a view attempts. But I was and still am known for being different with dolls and vocaloid songs and I'm very proud of myself. And there is no way of stopping me!

  • @MikaelaCher
    @MikaelaCher 3 роки тому +830

People don't understand the joy of having dolls all looking pretty and how therapeutic it can be to dress them up and clean them. It truly is a good peaceful moment you can have to focus on something harmless. And it also makes you feel like a child all over, which can be very necessary sometimes in life. Miniatures are a thing people collect, so why not the dolls themselves ?
This video is so necessary and well made, and i hope it helps change the view on doll collecting

I am a 61 year old woman so I was around when Barbie first came out and I loved her. I had a huge collection of dolls as my brother was in Vietnam and sent me dolls on a regular basis. When I met my ex husband, my father was thrilled to be able to get rid of my collection....he gave them to the little girl next door without my consent. Forward several years and I rediscovered Barbie while going thru relationship problems and then divorce. Just combing Barbie's hair or changing her clothes helped me cope. My Mom told me that I was too old to play with dolls. Her words bothered me for awhile but I don't think she understood how therapeutic my dolls were at the time. Today I am married to a wonderful man and have an ever growing Barbie collection. I have been buying lots of used Barbies and treating them to refurbishment. I don't think people understand the appeal.....and frankly.....I don't give a damn.

My [cis/straight/male] adult obsession with Monster High started with the fact that they were tangentially related to the Universal monster movies, which I have loved since I was a kid. I became a fan of the animated Monster High movies right away, enchanted by the characterizations as well as the design aesthetic. Eventually, I ended up owning six of the little ghouls, and I really see them as tiny works of art. The dolls themselves, their fashions, and all of the accessories have a delightful attention to detail. My wife collects Barbie and a few other dolls, so she fully supports my fandom. I really hope this franchise comes back to unlife!

Like we're all basically "outcasts" who got bullied for having different likes, so why do people in the same community end up doing the same mean things they had to deal with? Like when the debate on "Should you open your dolls or keep in them in box?" pops up, people get so heated and I'm like "Why the heck does it matter?" If someone wants to open their dolls let them, if they want to keep them in boxes, let them. Easy as that.

As I grew older my interest in even AG waned since I couldn't really connect with the doll's age range anymore.
It wasn't until around age 18 to 19 when I took interest in dolls again after finding out about bjds, and about a year ago I started collecting again. Dolls became a means of showing creativity to me. , and I enjoy giving my dolls their own character and personality.

They are decorative, and depending on their attire, they can actually represent history. I love their variety. Whether they are made from cloth, vinyl, resin, or glass. Oh, and I forgot to mention. My Mother decided to throw out, most of my dolls when I was 9. ( I only had 8???) The result? I think, I actually had a nervous breakdown. Seriously. I made a vow as a 9 yr old, then and there. I "collect" dolls 'cause... well... many reasons. Couldn't as a kid to a certain extent. I'd want the entire collection, but was only limited to a few. As an adult, I can decide at my own pace, and get ones that I couldn't as a kid. As an artist that does a little bit of many things ranging from illustrations, animation, interior design, cosplay, etc, I've also thought of customizing and repainting dolls and make props for them too. Or, it can be as simple as collecting dolls of things you relate to and just simply find pretty to look at.
I mean, if adults can spend their pastimes playing video games and watching sports, which are considered to be activities for children to a certain extent, I don't see why not include playing with dolls. Never liked the stigma of dolls always having to be for a certain demographic anyway. Same goes with collecting just about anything that looks like or are toys, there shouldn't be a demographic requirement to do so.

Yeah, I feel that. When I was a kid (honestly, even now), I had those kind of overly practical parents who didn't see a point in buying anything that wasn't 100% necessary. So my dolls would be these budget dolls, not even the good quality budget dolls like Steffi Love or anything, but those terrible quality dolls from India that would fall apart after less than a week of playing. I only had like three Barbies, and my sister would destroy them. So starting to collect dolls now is reclaiming the kind of childhood I wish I was allowed to have. Same reason why I wear my hair long to my waist. As I child, my mother saw long hair as a waste of time, effort, soap, etc., so I had a boy-cut until I was ten. Not really the same situation you had, but the way you describe why you collect dolls really speaks to me. Like, that's putting how I feel about it in words in a way I couldn't really explain.

im 22 and dollcollecting has always been a comfort to me , i have depression and ocd so collecting dolls has always helped me throughout the days esp w my depression bc it gives me smth to look forward to. i also always loved fashion and art and these dolls give me that, esp monster high! i love their cute themes and how they embrace their differences and their backstories on top of that are so detailed . when i was in middle school i went to a small private school and i didnt fit in at all i was different than everyone and monsterhigh was such a comfort for me bc of that! i also love celebrity themed dolls like the disney channel ones, since as a kid selena gomez and demi lovato also helped me through dark times and the new billie ones i now collect bc i connect to her music and shes an inspiration to me. on top of the fact that if youre into hollywood like myself theyre just a v cool concept! my mum collects statues and porcelain dolls and she has mental health struggles as well and this helps her , so even though she doesnt collect fashion dolls like me she understands the community and she even helps me w growing my collection ! im v thankful i have a mum who supports this esp since i realize not everyone has that privilege, however my cousins who one is 11 yrs older than me and the other is years older than me have made rude necessary comments ab my collection. the one whos 11 years older than me once put me down ab it sm (this was in fall of 2018) to the point where i actually cried and im not a person who cries easily. now if she said anything knowing me now i would snap back and say smth. however thankfully ive always been the type of person to do what i wanna do so petty and rude comments will never stop me. esp comments from ppl like my cousin who are too ignorant to understand that everyone has a different joy.

The reason why I loved dolls now as an adult, I never got to have dolls if my own as a kid. The only time I did have dolls was at my grandmother's place. When ever I wanted a doll, it had to stay at my grandmother's. As an adult now. I am able to buy the dolls I never got to play with. The most expensive doll I have is a 17 inch elissabat and I have two of them. But I mainly collect dolls because I customize them.

I am addicted to Hextian and his doll repaints, I watch them all, sometimes on repeat and Hextian was SERVING. I was never a doll person until Monster High hit the shelves and I found a doll line that was me because I was basically Wednesday Addams in school. So when I saw them in the store I felt vindicated, I felt accepted because every single person I knew was now obsessed and thought my style was now normal. But I guess I was destined to fall in love with it?
My mom has been collecting Porcelain dolls since she was 16 and she's going to be 58. She has BOXES full of teapots and dolls from 8 inches to a full 24inches(roughly). Some of the dolls have moving eyes, porcelain hands, glass eyes, genuine silk dresses, human hair, etc. They're amazing.

I’ve started doll collecting in the past few months and I’m enjoying it a lot so far. A lot of it has to do with how I lost all of my childhood dolls, which I loved and cared for so much because of my mother disowning me and kicking me out. She sold every one and I haven’t seen them since. Now, I hope to build up a new and cooler collection than what I had before in order to almost soothe this broken child’s heart deep within my own. I’m really enjoying it! My favorite right now is this beautiful 1/4 BJD doll I got for relatively cheap and her hair and dress is gorgeous and she is everything that I would’ve wanted as a kid. I named her Marybeth :D

Heck, I don't think anyone would even remember me just for these reasons - and that I gave up. I had a whole UA-cam channel going with stop motions and was doing really great.
However when I reached 400 subs, someone in my school found my channel and spread it around. Was bullied - had to delete most videos with my face in it - was cautious in bringing friends into my room... and eventually stopped filming for UA-cam. I still collect dolls - and have completed some exclusive doll collections... however nobody, except for me, knows that. Until now I guess?
But thank you for the video! Brought in some memories of some happy moments in my life where I did find people who accepted and enjoyed my content...

It sounds so nice but also so scary at the same time because I'm so introverted. I'd be so nervous! Also, the most I spent was on the entire first series of the Monster High Minis. Now I need to get the second. Though, I guess I spent about the same on the Monster High Frightmares.

Something cool, when I was a senior I started repainting and making outfits for MH dolls, and in the yearbook they gave me a spotlight about a couple of my dolls. That was really awesome to me as I thought I was a complete loser at the time. Now I know that my interest and absolute love for creating these works of art is justifiable for more than one reason.

This is one of my favorite videos you've made! I love how open and personal you were about your story and how you came to love dolls and teared up at some parts especially when your dad was in the hospital. And, I'm glad how you explained things in such a way that if others who aren't part of the community may better understand why we love dolls. I've always loved communities with animation, anime, art, and more especially with dolls and my family to an extent thinks I'm childish and weird for it. But, I feel like they were never able to have an open mind to understand that things like dolls bring me so much joy and it's not that much different than liking any other hobby or collecting other things.
