@daccy86 Do people really buy new pairs of trainers when they're dirty? That's mental, I either wear boat shoes or boots, both are over 7 years old and I've never even contemplated replacing them. Another world...
Ruin for me. Bought an 05 CLK 1.8 kompressor 4 days ago, did an oil change, did the breaks, I was really happy with it. Talked to my mechanic the day afer I bought it, he ordered a timing kit for it, he was going to do it tomorrow and this morning the timing chain slipped, destroyed valves pistons, everything. I'm devastated.
That really sucks, I'm sorry to hear. But consider this, it is potentially an opportunity to beef it up some, possibly find some upgraded cams, skim the head for a bit more compression while it's off, make it a little more spicy.
I know how that feels. Few weeks ago I had a catalytic converter replacement booked in. The day before it was due to be replaced it must have been blocked and it caused the engine to smash a huge hole in it. So I had to get an engine replacement. Expensive few weeks. I'm guessing you'll need a new engine?

On the argument: In oldschool games, like the og NFS MW, the soundtrack is a must. For modern games, no. The soundtracks of the recent NFS and FH games were mostly trash. In older games, it was mostly solid with several bangers, if you dont like a track, its alright cause the rest is nice. But in modern games they shove in whatever the marketing dept thinks young people like instead of actually picking a good selection.
My 159 was bought at 96k miles and ws rust proofed with a lot of preventative maintenance like clutch/DMF, lower arms, cambelt, subframes etc over the last couple years. Had a few things I have had to replace but overall, it doesn't feel like it's just ticked over 100k at all. Though I have a 2.4 JTDm engine which is robust engine compared to some of the other options. All dependant on who had it before, what they did and how you treat it moving forward (within reason obviously)
My dad had a 2.2 159 Sportwagen. He got it when it was 3 years old and had only done 20,000 miles. Needed a new timing chain, a new steering rack, the steering fluid was the wrong grade (I think they made that same mistake in every one they built) and numerous other small problems. He had a Mito or Saab convertible courtesy car for half of the year he owned it, before ditching it at the end of its year long warranty. Was a really nice car, built by numpties.
@drunkenhobo8020 2.2 is an ass engine tbf, GM built and unreliable. The only engines worth having are the 1750 TBi petrol and 2.4 diesel. Yeah, the early years had the wrong power steering fluid in and was given red instead of green. But they said if no one had any issues then to leave it with red as putting green in after would cause more problems.
I saw online that some of the older speed cameras where I live don't work because they rely on 3G networks, however the council is upgrading them before the end of the financial year so they will work again.
I have to admit I’ve also always turned off the music in racing games aswell. My girlfriends always saying, oh this song was in GT2 or GT4 and I’m just like, was it? No idea lol. Menu music stays. When I’m driving I’m driving lol.
I also disable the music in racing games, probably because I don't listen to music while I'm driving in RL. I just like driving so much that I enjoy being in this silent metal box with just my thoughts and the engine sounds. I have to mention that I don't use a car on a daily basis, so driving for me is special.
We all make mistakes and get brown letters. I made a misshap with cruise control got caught on a mobile speed camera doing 58 in a 50. Then the post office lost my information I sent off and I went to court and I got 6 points and a £675 fine. The system sucks why can't we do all this online yet? Love the podcast guys and all the content keep up the good work.

As a viewer from Russia(many chinese cars here) , you guys should definitely visit China to check out the car scene there, the amount of new and wild cars I see everyday is crazy and you would love it.
Just a word about enforcement cameras - A recent mistake by Liverpool Council means that thousands (including me) don't have to pay fines. The reason? they forgot to send out the 1st letter!
Ruin for me for sure. MOT due next month so went in for a quick brake check. Discs all round, pads all round, 2 callipers, top mount, battery a set of wiper blades and negative a grand in my bank later... Literally just had springs, DPF and exhaust done too... I’ve had an Astra diesel van for a while now. It’s done 300k almost. All it’s ever had is general maintenance, a timing belt and an injector. It’s automatic. Not slow. Stupidly cheap to run. I get about 600 miles per tank. I’m after a new car £15k budget. Nothing I have looked at has compared to my shitbox Astra van cdti 120 lol
I went to look at 7 audi a4 and every single one that had lower mileage was so badly taken care of. Bought a 300.000 kilometers one and it was in such a good condition with everything done to it already for the same price as those other ones.
There has to be 25k of the GR Yaris body shell, but a good number of the body shell were used for the 1.5 CVT version sold only in Japan (no 3 pot 1.6 turbo, no AWD etc). True number of GR Yarii is somewhat unknown.
33:00 Yeah my dad refuses to buy a car with about like 65,000 miles on it, Even if it was a PD130. I keep telling him it's fine to go over 150 even. My mum back along bought a 2004(?) 3.2 Shogun with 226,000 miles for like £400 as a stop gap whilst the old shogun sport was off the road with a blown engine. Tax was mental, I think £600 a year, but it ran pretty damn good, just expensive to run
Only cos its been bugging me since 1st listening on Spotify;...... BIGGER wheels (not smaller) make a car travel faster than the speedo shows. Smaller wheels make a car accellerate faster but also causes the speedometer to read faster than is actual, meaning they are actually travelling slower. Anyway, love the podcasts guys :) Also, 22:12 lmao
Thanks for the naswer guys. Actually, I am from Poland, you have good luck with guessing WIll 😆 Also, week Ruined, my Mazda 6 MPS has done 60k km without issues, but now I have done timing chain, gearbox, and still have some more stuff to do. That's why I'm thinking about getting a second car, while the first one is sitting at the mechanic's all the time. Sad times.
Cars are ruling right now I'd say. I lost my really nicely restored NB Miata a few weeks ago but picked up a NC Miata with better options, 57k miles, and at $9k I also got a BMW 128i manual with sport package, under 90k miles. Those are probably quite normal in the EU but they are super rare here in the US!
win! scored a set of heated leather seats on eBay for my car and will go collect them in a few weeks... also some police constabularies have reported what limits they enforce, eg: 10% +2 for Derbyshire and a lot of the uk. therefore seeing 77 on the speedo (plus most cars under-read by 5-6%) would be acceptable (I think) as long as you're over they can pull you, but I dont think they can punish. there are lists online of what most counties say but normally 10% +2
I'm with Will on the music in games. In fact, real life too - I'm a musician and I love music, but when I'm driving I only want to hear the car. The only use I have for stereos in cars is for Bluetooth from my phone for hands-free calls and sat nav.
Bought myself a 190,000 Mercedes Benz E320, runs like a dream with the previous owner regularly servicing the engine. Hope to put an extra 50-60k on it, definitely not selling that on I imagine
Both my cars have 220,000+ miles without issue. They’ve been in my family since new and have been extremely well maintained. I’ve had friends whose cars gave up after 120k. It’s not so much the miles, it’s how they were maintained
Mate of mine had an S-type that over-read by a solid 6-7mph, all the way up to about 70, after that it was closer, but still over by 2-3mph. Standard wheel & tyre sizes. 🤷🏼
Old Gatso cameras aren't all on. I was told as much on a speed awareness course. Easy to tell as well, the ones that are on have the flash bulb installed. Wont help you first time you pass them though.
I agree with Will SO much on the no game music but yes real life driving music AND the volume of said music. My friends will talk about the banger menu music on discord, and I’m like “hmmm, wouldn’t know, turned it off”.
Cars are ruling for me too. I sold my bmw e91 that I’d had for a few months and just didn’t form a connection with. And I bought a very nice frozen white mk6 fiesta st which I’m now only the second keeper of. It’s pretty clean and totally original. Which is rare!!
Ok, you want to know if it is rule or ruin for me? It's ruin atm. I have a BMW e46 318Ci. Not the beefiest car in the world, but it gets the job done of hauling my ugly arse from point A to point B comfortably. However, my passenger mirror never fully worked. The heating works, electrical adjustment semi-works but it doesn't fold - and it should. I ordered a new one, wanted to finally replace it after 5 years of driving without a fully working mirror and guess what? The shop sold me the wrong one and I can't return it since it's been bought months ago and just sat in my closet, waiting to be installed. So I missed my return window. So yeah, for now I'm stuck with a passenger mirror with 1 out of 3 functions working. I want to get rid of this car, someone please buy it off of me.
Do a podcast rating the top 40 cars of all time, could narrow it down to era or classes of car but would love to see you both argue over which car would be the over all crown jewel✌️
Problem is with the homologation special list is there are very few wrong answers, because they are all great cars. Little surprised to see no Impreza mentioned though, but I guess the TME was the 2000s WRC representative.
Enjoyed both your chats with Ben Fowler, being obsessed with cars can be a pain, for a while be been thinking of selling my e3 M3. And in its place either a TVR chimera, MX5, vxr8, old mini, Audi rs4 avant, another 205 gti, the list goes on 🤷🏼♂️
Im from South Africa ,my dad and wife are one of those that focus on milage. Also dont understand my interest in older cars. I agree keep up the maintenace and your car will last. I hit 300 000km on my 2004 Fiesta before having to sell it for a more family friendly car.
I've been stopped in my escort cosworth for an undersize front plate. The copper said he was glad I had it on as he genuinely just wanted to have a look over my car and it gave him an excuse to stop me, there not all bad guys 😂
I have a question, i've always loved cars (no practical knowledge of them) but cos of uni and no money didnt pass my test till this year i have a 2007 corsa atm but next year id like a better and more fun modern car for a 2nd car for the next 3-5 years. What would you guys recommend around the 5k mark ive looked at a MK7 fiesta st or an alfa giulietta
Best guess why they couldn't insure the Limo is its probably considered a commercial vehicle based on weight or passenger capacity. I know like in the US you need a commercial license to operate a stretch limo that can seat 16 passengers.
Racing game music can be a double edged sword. I really loved a ceratin track from NFS Underground. Ride by Lost prophets. Only to then hear about their leads other interests... and that was the last time I could happily go listen to that track.
Been watching since day one & new episodes are a highlight of my work week. If you do come to the east coast, feel free to drop me a line if you need any food recommendations in DC (from there) & Philly (live there). My boss races up at Lime Rock in CT which could be a cool stop for y’all if you end up near New York. All the best and thanks for all the entertainment!!
1:16:20 I was 20 and bought my first BMW 320 on the way home Beenie man-who am I came on the radio. Zim zimmer who got the keys to my bimmer😎 I remember singing out loud to myself I’ve got the keys to my bimmer
1:07:33 It depends on the game, but I also turn the music off. Especially in most racing games (I say "most" because Burnout Paradise just isn't the same without it, though I do disable certain songs), since while I do like some of the songs, it's generally only one or two on each "station". So I just disable the music entirely. Plus, I want to hear the cars. I also usually either watch UA-cam (or Netflix, Disney+, etc.) on the side, or am in Discord with friends, and I also don't like having music going while I'm doing that. Minecraft is the other game where I instantly turn the music off, mainly for the same reasons. If I want music while I'm playing that, I'll just listen to Spotify If it's a story-based game though, I'm generally just focused on the game, and the music can be important to the feel of it, so I leave it on in those. For example, Far Cry 3 wouldn't be the same without "Make It Bun Dem" by Skrillex and Damian Marley during "Kick the Hornet's Nest" (the weed field burning mission), and Dark Souls (and Elden Ring) wouldn't be the same without the epic boss music
Leaving out the E30 M3 was a crime, you two should be ashamed. I understand it’s a harsh game, but the m3 is genuinely one of the most iconic cars ever made

"The path to success is paved with brown letters"
Never heard anything more true
Only cos its been bugging me since 1st listening on Spotify;...... BIGGER wheels (not smaller) make a car travel faster than the speedo shows. Smaller wheels make a car accellerate faster but also causes the speedometer to read faster than is actual, meaning they are actually travelling slower.
Anyway, love the podcasts guys :)
Also, 22:12 lmao
Thanks for the naswer guys. Actually, I am from Poland, you have good luck with guessing WIll 😆
Also, week Ruined, my Mazda 6 MPS has done 60k km without issues, but now I have done timing chain, gearbox, and still have some more stuff to do. That's why I'm thinking about getting a second car, while the first one is sitting at the mechanic's all the time. Sad times.
Cars are ruling right now I'd say. I lost my really nicely restored NB Miata a few weeks ago but picked up a NC Miata with better options, 57k miles, and at $9k
I also got a BMW 128i manual with sport package, under 90k miles. Those are probably quite normal in the EU but they are super rare here in the US!
ncs are great cars hope you enjoy it but we didnt get the 128i or 328 in the eu we had 25i and 30i using the same engine
win! scored a set of heated leather seats on eBay for my car and will go collect them in a few weeks... also some police constabularies have reported what limits they enforce, eg: 10% +2 for Derbyshire and a lot of the uk. therefore seeing 77 on the speedo (plus most cars under-read by 5-6%) would be acceptable (I think) as long as you're over they can pull you, but I dont think they can punish. there are lists online of what most counties say but normally 10% +2
I'm with Will on the music in games. In fact, real life too - I'm a musician and I love music, but when I'm driving I only want to hear the car. The only use I have for stereos in cars is for Bluetooth from my phone for hands-free calls and sat nav.
Oh nice, a new episode from the best car podcast ever. Perfecto.
... already listened to this on the Apple podcast app. Now watching it while surfing FB marketplace and Car & Classic.
Bought myself a 190,000 Mercedes Benz E320, runs like a dream with the previous owner regularly servicing the engine. Hope to put an extra 50-60k on it, definitely not selling that on I imagine
Please consider explaining what a torque converter is and how it works. Thank you
Both my cars have 220,000+ miles without issue. They’ve been in my family since new and have been extremely well maintained. I’ve had friends whose cars gave up after 120k. It’s not so much the miles, it’s how they were maintained
definetly rule this week for me, picked up a set of brand new weds kranze cerberus monoblocks with brand new toyo proxes for 230 quid!
Edwins head phone lead lol doin anyone's else's head in 😂😂
100% 😅
it is NOW!!!
Mate of mine had an S-type that over-read by a solid 6-7mph, all the way up to about 70, after that it was closer, but still over by 2-3mph. Standard wheel & tyre sizes. 🤷🏼
Still no mic stands but loving the work lads
I would have included the Nissan Pulsar GTIR. Such a cool car to me
Always raw dog journeys, induction noises and exhaust note 👌🏼
Or yeah loud skater music
Can’t help but notice the midnight club 3 in the background so many good memories ❤
mc3's soundtrack is the perfect playlist for my 6 hour drive upstate to visit family. always a nice little nostalgia trip to make the miles disappear.
The video game references is what makes me love this podcast more than the auto Alex one.
Old Gatso cameras aren't all on. I was told as much on a speed awareness course. Easy to tell as well, the ones that are on have the flash bulb installed. Wont help you first time you pass them though.
New microphones are unnecessary but the sound board is amazing! Every podcast needs a soundboard. I love the silly sound effects.
Brilliant episode! For me cars ruin this week - had to get our starter motor replaced.
I agree with Will SO much on the no game music but yes real life driving music AND the volume of said music. My friends will talk about the banger menu music on discord, and I’m like “hmmm, wouldn’t know, turned it off”.
Agree on the the no music front, both in game and real life. Perhaps at most 1% of my total driving time has been while listening to music.
You could count the parts shared between the Metro and the 6R4 on one hand!!!
Cars are ruling for me too. I sold my bmw e91 that I’d had for a few months and just didn’t form a connection with. And I bought a very nice frozen white mk6 fiesta st which I’m now only the second keeper of. It’s pretty clean and totally original. Which is rare!!
Yes mate! I also drove the coach on GTA 😂 used to genuinely love pretending to do a bus route!
If your biggest issue with a 24 year old BMW is the mirror not folding I would say you’re winning!
Just sell the mirror and get the right one 🤷🏻♂️
Do a podcast rating the top 40 cars of all time, could narrow it down to era or classes of car but would love to see you both argue over which car would be the over all crown jewel✌️
Problem is with the homologation special list is there are very few wrong answers, because they are all great cars. Little surprised to see no Impreza mentioned though, but I guess the TME was the 2000s WRC representative.
not the best by a long shot but my favourite homologation specials- superbird, 850r (not sure it counts but whatever), alfa 155 silverstone edition
I’m not from the UK and still the metro build would be the best thing
Ruin, I bought a cheap Giulietta that has a broken rear wiring loom and it needs discs & pads. It's an Alfa but I love it
That limo insurance thing is hilarious 😂😂😂
Talking about the audi rebrand at 9:00 what do you think about the jaguar rebrand?
I'm with Will no music ENGINE noise baby!
Racing game music can be a double edged sword. I really loved a ceratin track from NFS Underground. Ride by Lost prophets. Only to then hear about their leads other interests... and that was the last time I could happily go listen to that track.
Ngl, an entire podcast dedicated to a top 40 would not be a miss 😆
idk if i'm rule or ruin this week.
pros: my V6 brera's dodgy coils and fuel system system got sorted
cons: i'm now poor
Why do I get anxious about the top 10 list lol!! Great podcast
Hiring an rx8 in Tokyo and driving through the mountains to Fukushima was an absolute RULE
I literally do have an Aygo, and yeah you can drive it if you want lol. IMO the 3cyl sounds much better than most boring 4cyl's
1:16:20 I was 20 and bought my first BMW 320 on the way home Beenie man-who am I came on the radio. Zim zimmer who got the keys to my bimmer😎 I remember singing out loud to myself I’ve got the keys to my bimmer
I've gone by plenty of police cars on the motorway at 75-80 mph and never had an issue
If I want music while I'm playing that, I'll just listen to Spotify
If it's a story-based game though, I'm generally just focused on the game, and the music can be important to the feel of it, so I leave it on in those.
31:49 Huge fan of yours here. Been watching since TDC started (watched Overdrive as well). And I'm Iranian
Leaving out the E30 M3 was a crime, you two should be ashamed. I understand it’s a harsh game, but the m3 is genuinely one of the most iconic cars ever made
Loved that. Great content. Music on.
How can you mention the XJ220?!?!! Is it not a homologation car?
