It took a long time but now I'm done with it! If you liked the project, I'm happy if you check my IG to support me there, too! Thank you - TSOLi, Oops!
Thank you for the comment. This is my second time trying the checkering and it's really fun. You should check some tutorials on YT! I hope you'll find it fun, too:)
There is everything to love and nothing to hate about this. The design and execution are…exquisite. I’ve been woodworking for over 45 years - nearer 60 since I first picked up a hammer and chisel - and much of how you made this reminds me of that start when we had no power tools at all. Some imperfections were inevitable and, like your wabi-sabi, can actually show the human that made the piece. Now, an aching worn-out body means I can no longer do many manual tasks in the shop. So, all the rough work is done by machines and I finish by hand. Certainly on the UK, the dovetail joint was used in furniture making because a mechanical joint was essential as the chemical joints (glue) were unreliable over time. Now, with our standard of adhesives, dovetails are no longer required and are simply an aesthetic choice. I make the point that, if modern glues had been available to people such as Chippendale, then they would have used them and not spent money (time) having people cut dovetails. It’s the first video of yours that I have come across. I subscribe to very few woodworking channels but I have subscribed, and liked, yours. I will be looking at your library and looking forward to more.
Thank you for the compliment, finding me on YT and sharing your story!!! Wow, 45years of experience! Ever since I started woodworking and video editing a little over 2 years ago, I enjoy learning new things and nice people here always give me motivation to continue. It's kind of embarrassing to see my old videos but that's what I went through from almost zero experience so I hope you find something interesting, haha! I feel honored whenever an experienced man like you subscribes me and leave me a comment. Thank you:)
@@YRTi we should be thanking you for taking the time to make these videos and showing your journey from absolute starter to becoming proficient. It’s a journey we have all been on and I think it’s good for me, at least, to try and recapture some of the handwork that I did and you are doing. I’m lucky enough to have a large workshop and, as a legacy of running a sideline furniture business, I have every machine that I need plus too many sets of chisels, planes, marking tools etc. when I’m gone, my wife knows to donate most of it to those charities who run small places where people who have undergone mental trauma can find some peace in making things and mixing with others.
Your humbleness is your greatess asset. When we are humble we become good teachers. And as I watch some of your earlier I see you skill progression, I see you skill level also increase, but you remain humble. Thank you for taking the time to document your journey and for sharing it with the world.
Thank you here, too! I try to see what's bad than good so I can improve it next time so I can't go like "Look what I made!" That's just my personality but I enjoy woodworking so it's all good:)
Thank you, my friend. Around this project, which wasn't a long time ago from now, I started to feel comfortable with basic wood fabrications but still older videos are always embarrassing to me, haha:)
Fantastic! Love the design. Love the scale. (You may have revealed a solution to the economic problem I've seen of amazing full size pieces being worth less than the cost of the wood used to make them.) Not only does the finished project impress but also interesting and inspiring is how you show particular skills have improved to do it. Thanks!
Thank you so much! Well, I'm usually a user of what I make so even when people think I wasted wood by making something doesn't look nice, I use it and treat it until it dies, so I hope it's ok haha:)
Thank you! Yes, the weave Kumiko is fun to try and it actually got me into woodworking 2 years ago! Well, thank you for subscribing to my CH. I hope I can make more videos that you can enjoy, too:)
This is good format for instructions, not too long and still gives excellent idea how it was done. Box looks stunning as well, overall aesthetics fits nicely together. Excellent job, thank you for this video.
How nice that you mention what kind of videos I want to make, haha! but I wasn't able to include some tips I found at this time as it gets too long so maybe in some other times... Thank you, my friend:)
Thank you! It's because people here are nice and leave me positive comments like you. Even if it's just a single word, it gives me motivation to do better next time:)
I really love this project you made. Listening to your comments, and how you laid everything out, made it seem a lot easier to understand thank you for that; I look forward to more episodes :)
Looks beautiful. I was just thinking this morning before I left for work that I hadn't seen any new videos from you for some time. What a nice surprise to see this in my feed after work.
Thank you! I'm happy with the result but I guess I'll never be satisfied with what I make, haha. More importantly, I'm glad your icon comes back to be the normal one:)
Thank you for the comment! Oh I'm simple stupid so I get energy from nice comments here and I just have more than enough energy to use so I use it to push myself, haha.
I really love the kumiko, I thought it was a solid piece that you painstakingly chiseled out to form the basket weave design. The checkering turned out great, just adding it at the corner along with the handle detail......awesome!!! Your wood choice and finish is so pretty, it really looks like a high end piece. Congratulations on completing the challenge, I think it is fantastic.
Thank you and yes, I doubted if I can finish this project including the video making but I'm happy that I did! Oh I have nearly zero skill/experience of wood carving but it sounds fun to try:)
Thank you here, too! tbh, I had more than enough feedback to make me so happy for this project so I already feel my effort to join in this challenge has paid off, haha. Well, wish me luck:)
Thank you as always! It was gonna be a smaller project with different wood but I don't know, it ended up like this. I'm happy with the final result anyways.
This is amazing work. I am quite a bit behind you in my hand tool journey but I am practicing. I found 3 new jigs to add to my collection in this one video. lol. Good stuff. Thank you.
Just saw this in my home page. Nice details and explanation of your process. Taihen Steckii desu! My understanding of Wabi Sabi is not about imperfection but about natural occurrence? And appreciating that in the art?
Thank you:) Ah, Wabi Sabi is difficult to explain but I wanted or tried to express the negative thing like Wabishii / Sabishii that you can still appreciate how it is there by the misaligned shells but oh well, it's not there anymore.... haha.
hi im 17y's old and i love your work, im trying to become a woodworker myself, and what you are doing just gives me so much inspiration on different woodworking technique's, and also different kumiko styles. the box you made in this video is beautiful, and i wanted to ask if i could design something like that with your consent?
Thank you for the comment! You can copy whatever I made as they aren’t patented and I’m the person who doesn’t really mind about it unless you try to make money by selling my design, haha. I hope you’ll be successful in woodworking😎👍
Magnificient cabinet and beautifull workmanship, but a small warning. Dirty minds do think dirty thoughts, and naming it the " Sailor Moon Box" does give a bit weird wibes😅. Besides it is slightly villainuous behaviour to but Sailor Moon behind the bars, keep a close eye on your wife.🙄😁
Thank you! Haha, don't worry, I decided to send this box to my parents so unless my dad has a hidden hobby, it won't be a Sailor Moon Box and I strongly hope so....
Your videos are always enjoyable! By the way, @3:49 edge banding and 'cock-beading' is fine to do over half-lap dovetails. Tom Fidgen has a video showcasing that and stringing on a drawer front if you're interested. ua-cam.com/video/XrpwtT_6XYk/v-deo.htmlsi=7dZvaE4fbCJ45gFl Off topic but are there any Western saws you prefer or would like? (Imagine Santa delivered it so money wasn't a barrier) Could you imagine ever integrating any to your toolbox? EG. Small high tpi dovetail, rip tenon etc. Just curious. :-)
Thank you for the comment and the information! I just watched the video and he's amazing!! With regards to western saws, sorry, I have no idea until I need one... In general, I'm a person who first use whatever it is, and then I find the use for it so yeah, I really don't know... So if I have to get one, I would choose one base on the looks, which has the most western look, haha.
"Plus one detail", what a great way to push yourself, well done 🙂
Thank you! It was a fun challenge and I'm glad it didn't come out to be too much:)
The only way to over come adversity is to take on the challenges head-on. Well done!
Thank you! I have to thank this Rockler challenge event more, too:)
This is absolutely stunning, you are far too harsh on yourself, incredible work! Amazing!
Thank you! I just feel once I spoil myself, I would stop learning, haha. It's all good:) I hope you enjoy your woodworking journey, too!
It took a long time but now I'm done with it! If you liked the project, I'm happy if you check my IG to support me there, too! Thank you - TSOLi, Oops!
Wow that’s just bonkers!! What a skilled artisan.
Thank you! I did my best and I’m honored to be called like that, haha😎
The under/over effect you achieved is quite beautiful.
Thank you! It actually came out as I wanted, which is pretty rare to me, haha:)
Awesome piece of artwork with all those +1 details included 👍
Glad this video gave me the opportunity to discover your channel 🤩
Thank you for finding me in the middle of nowhere, haha. I’m glad that you like the video:)
Amazing piece! I love the checkering on the drawer face. I will have to try that now!
Thank you for the comment. This is my second time trying the checkering and it's really fun. You should check some tutorials on YT! I hope you'll find it fun, too:)
C’est vraiment du très joli travail,c’est magnifique,,à bientôt salut Jeannot 🛠😉
Merci, my friend. I’m guessing and responding:)

Love the kumiko on this piece, amazing work as always, especially for a 'hobbyist'.
Thank you! I actually want to call myself as a woodworker but I've never sold even a single piece so I'm definitely a hobbyist, haha.
A really well-made and ORIGINAL piece of work, my good man!
"Original" sounds so cool, haha. Thank you, my friend!
Wow! That's gorgeous!
Thank you, my new friend:)
It’s a beautiful box . I believe in Wabi Sabi Thanks
Thank you, my friend. Around this project, which wasn't a long time ago from now, I started to feel comfortable with basic wood fabrications but still older videos are always embarrassing to me, haha:)
Wow
🙌
Beautiful work and precise craftsmanship. You are no longer a novice.
Thank you! I actually tried this project harder so people will take out the novice label from me, haha. It seems like it worked:)
Fabulous!
Thank you!
Absolutely beautiful 👏👏
Thank you!
Incredible work. I love the woven look of the door. Congratulations, I hope you win.
Thank you, my friend. Seems like I already had many new friends through this project so it's too greedy to want more, haha:) Wish me luck!!
Looks very nice. It has been enjoyable to see your skills grow. I appreciate this "plus one detail" philosophy.
Thank you! Sometimes less is more but at the end of the day, it's a good practice to add extra details:)
Beautiful work and design

Very very very nice.
Thanks, man. Very very very happy!
Wow. Inspiring. Astonishing beauty.
Thank you! I don’t know if it’s that good but I’m getting better:)
Omg, this is amazing….I’m going to try the weave sometime in the future. That’s a beautiful effect…
And I subscribed! This is the first video I’ve seen of yours.

Thank you. A little by little:)
Love your design for this box. I think you the little details all work great together.

Thank you! Yeah, this one took a long time and I'm happy that you liked it:) Hopefully, I can upload videos more often in the future!
Beautiful job, your kumiko on this job is stunning. Your skill with hand tools is very impressive, keep up the good work.
Thank you! I'm happy with the result but I guess I'll never be satisfied with what I make, haha. More importantly, I'm glad your icon comes back to be the normal one:)
Wonderful as always. Happy new year :)
Thank you but hey, maybe I’ll do one more in the year, just about to start:)
Very nice piece and inspirational the way you push yourself to learn new things.
Thank you for the comment! Oh I'm simple stupid so I get energy from nice comments here and I just have more than enough energy to use so I use it to push myself, haha.
Beautiful piece sir, excellent craftsmanship, I like your attention to detail, thank you for the video.
Thank you! I'll practice more to deserve your compliment:)

Hey, there's the thing again :D Like I said before, this is awesome work. From the basket weave, the asymmetric checkering, and the drawer pull
Thank you as always! It was gonna be a smaller project with different wood but I don't know, it ended up like this. I'm happy with the final result anyways.

You can find the video from the description. I made it like 2years ago and I still do it almost in the same way. Thank you!
