I was born in '56. Been thru all the Rock singers etc. If someone asked me the best male singer of the 20th century I would have to say Sinatra hands down. But his style only. His sense of timing is unmatched.
I was probably working 2nd shift with no TV, so I missed a lot of shows when they aired in the 70s. Later, I worked nights and would watch Johnny's monologue then race to work.
I remember this night in November of '76. It was the evening of my sister's wedding rehearsal dinner and when we got back from that, I recall watching theTonight Show with my entire family . My parents were over the moon that Sinatra was on and even though I was just in my 20's and more into rock music, the excitement of that night filtered down to me as well. The older I get, the more I appreciate Sinatra. Thanks, Mom and Dad.
I am 67 and was fortunate to have seen Frank Sinatra in Kansas City in the 1980s , I got to see him twice, one time he had Liza Minnelli open for him, I was never a big fan of hers, but she changed my mind, she was great, I mean fantastic, , all the Kansas City mob guys were there, I saw Nick Civella sitting down front, and radio personality Mike Murphy was there, it was a great night for Kansas City, Sinatra was at the end of his career but he was so good, I was also able to see Tony Bennett when he was on tour to support his album of Sinatra songs, he was wonderful, I feel lucky to have seen them, also caught Don Rickles in Las Vegas before he passed, he was so funny, those were the days for me, I loved it
Frank Sinatra OMG I saw him in person in the 70's in Chicago and it was the best show I ever saw, a friend bought the tickets and it was such a great night to see him in the flesh, I was always a fan. You are absolutely correct about all of the above luke, as a huge Francis Sinatra admirer I made the trip to Memorial Park in Cathedral City Palms Springs in 2008 to deposit flowers 💐 on his grave on his tenth anniversary. (It’s nice I don’t live too far) I grew up with his music since early childhood, I’m 64 now and I believe I was a fan at age 3. May 14 1998 was such a a sad day the positive impact he had on millions me included, i cried like a baby, a man I never met, yet i felt he was like a dear uncle to me…amazing. PS: I’m planning to visit his grave once again this May, this is his 25 anniversary, I think I’ll leave a small bottle of Jack Daniels a cigarette and some flowers. Love Frank and his music until the end of my days, he was indeed the greatest voice and artist of the 20th century.
It was common for men of this era to carry a roll of dimes because you never knew when you would get into a fist fight. The roll of dimes gave you the advantage over your attacker. My dad was born in New York and he explained to me why he always carried a roll of dimes until the day he died.
Sinatra. What an amazing artist and man. Can you think of anyone else today that would walk onto a show and create such excitement and admiration ? No. I can't either. Sheer class never goes out of fashion.
This shows why Johnny was so good. Is there a single talk show host today that would let someone like Rickles come on and take over? Today's hosts all want to make the show about them rather than the guests.

No one was more famous than Johnny Carson at the time and yet even he was nervous around Frank Sinatra not only because he was famous but he was a knight of Malta.
@sammyjammy6647 "better singer" is subjective. The greatest entertainer can be demonstrated by the fact that although both Frank and Elvis are renowned worldwide as singers, Frank had a movie career that Elvis could not match.
Such Powerful People!!! This episode is on a level of Television Art!!! God bless all these personalities and the memories they leave are like a perfume that does not fade away!!!!
People were so lucky to be around at this time to see entertainers like Sinatra, Martin and all of the Rat Pack in Vegas. I have been lucky to see many greats in Vegas, but missed these greats. Shalom
Look, I didn’t grow up listening to Sinatra, and I saw this when I was older. BUT - I KNEW WHO he was. And I grew up somehow LOVING Don Rickles. Don comes out, apparently not expected, and just STOLE the show from Johnny and Frank. Don was a high wire act with no net, but the guy had balls. That first spontaneous genuflection before “The Pope” was just a KILLER move. A wonderful show - you can still do that but it’s rare.
At 58, now I’m almost Frank’s age. He was my mother’s fav. Dean was my dad’s. My grandparents were his age. His albums along with the Mills Brothers, littered their home. I can’t believe where the time went but Frank is still part of us. What an influential individual on our culture, and a great philanthropist. He kicked open doors for so many.
This kind of entertainment will never happen again. From show host, to band, to Frank, to Don, to sidekick Ed and for sure audience response. Notice nothing close to mentioning any politics. So sad these days are gone...
There is something about seeing Sinatra crack up listening to Rickles. Can imagine him years earlier seeing this unknown man and getting others coming to see Rickles.
It's frustrating that Sinatra didn't record more during this period, when his voice was still in fine shape and he seemed to be in a good place personally, professionally, etc. He put out albums almost constantly in the 60s, but his interest in recording really tapered off by the 70s, even after coming out of retirement. I would have loved to have seen him do an album of Michel Legrand songs, or a proper solo Christmas album, or even a Sondheim album (why he never did "Sorry-Grateful" is beyond me).
It was likely a mix of burnout and depression, he felt like an old hat and it was just a new wild era, the 1970's. So much changed in music he thought he had no place anymore. A lot of opera singers quit the business once jazz and big band music came out in the same way, they were certain they were "obsolete".
He did record a few Legrand and Sondheim songs in the 70s. His main focus was live concerts...arenas. those were the money makers. And the songwriters weren't making great songs anymore
johnny carson was an experience. america was so blessed to have johnny every weeknight for decades when the world was still normal.

Rickles almost slips : Barbara Ma.... as in Marx !!! “ can’t you see I’m eatin here Frank” I EF watched it 100s of times and I still crack up ... love ya Frank !!!!
Bambino Boombonzo says hi too.
Those were amazing shows!!!
Even with work the next day, I gad to stay up and watch Johnny each night. A nice way to end the day.
I love it when Don says to Johnny (about Frank)..."He...makes ...
you...NERVOUS!". 😆
seeing Don Rickles somehow reminded me of Robin Williams, LEGENDS
Jeff Dunham and Walter are Rickles
I'm sure they arranged to have Don Rickles there with Sinatra. The perfect foil...
There is too much greatness on one show.
I loved still love Frank Sinatra !
Miss you Frank, Johnny, and Don
I loved Carson watched all the time …as a kid …Rickles ..Sinatra …(Joan Rivers was the female Don Rickles ) those were the days !!!! 💕
I TRULY LOVE FRANK SINATRA ..IN THE WEE SMALL HOURS OF THE MORNING MY FAVORITE!! GOD BLESS
This was a time when people had humor, class and style, and were not afraid to be offensive or self-deprecating. It was all in good fun, they knew it and everyone else knew it.
No one was more famous than Johnny Carson at the time and yet even he was nervous around Frank Sinatra not only because he was famous but he was a knight of Malta.
The restaurant story with Don Rickles, that was hilarious.
Sinatra, the greatest entertainer of the last 100 years.
That would be elvis...but frank is close
Elvis is a waaaay better singer. Johnny gave him the highest kudos simply because he’s biased and friends with Frank
True talent…oh to live in that time frame again
He also kicked many in the face!...A flawed genius of an entertainer, for sure.
Always the best musicians at Johnny Carter Show. Listening from Austria...
you mean jimmy carter?
or jonny carson?
i mean johnny carson
21:08 was just a demonstration to the future generations that he was singing for real, even his voice was sounding so perfect.
This kind of entertainment will never happen again. From show host, to band, to Frank, to Don, to sidekick Ed and for sure audience response. Notice nothing close to mentioning any politics. So sad these days are gone...
Im sure ive watched this a hundred times and still laugh every time ..Sinatra and Rickles ..once in a life time Carson show ..God Bless .
@@MrWolfSnack His drinking had something to do with his later problems!
My God , I miss that man!! Awesome!
Two heavy hitters Johnny and Frank what a quality show to bad late night TV is not half this good.
Rickles too man. The guy literally stole the show.
Johnny the best.........his voice and talent I miss him!.........from New York thanks for the memories.
