The fact that u are able to appreciate him, says you ARE the man YOU are. Some men cannot admire another man, because of jealousy and other feelings. Kudos to you
Don Rickles was the first insult comic who could get away with racial humor without anyone being offended, Why? Because everyone knew in reality he had a heart of gold. The man could make you laugh at a funeral. Nobody was safe with Rickles he would look at you with a straight face, insult you, and move on to the next joke before you could recover from the first one. I loved that man dearly one of the greatest comedians that ever did it. Rest In Peace, Mr. Rickles.
Part of it was that literally no one was spared, and there was no predicting who was next. A lot of insult comics make their name by picking a target and unleashing a constant barrage...Rickles would take potshots at anyone and everyone, but it wasn't indiscriminate. He landed every shot with surgical precision, he rode it just long enough to get the laugh, and then he moved on. He might do callbacks to his original joke, later, but he didn't dwell on any of his insults long enough to create any sense that he actually felt that way. An absolute master of reading the room and reading his crowd, and it's a shame that there's not more material discussing the development of his career and how much of his mastery was learned from trial and error versus what was just inherent understanding.
Its very rare, and very difficult to tow the line on racial comedy... Rickles with his Jewish background, and being a minority is very aware of that line and masterfully plays with that line of offensive and funny. Almost all the comic who has been masters of that racial comedy usually comes from a minority background.., because racial minorities are far more aware and see that racial problems and differences much more clearly in their lives... That's why Bill Burr is really a oddity... He is also a master of that racial comedy and tows the line so masterfully, but he is white...lol.
